4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, expert, immensely useful
This is an immensely informative and practical reference, which is pleasantly surprising - at first appearance it looks like an academic (i.e. theoretical) work.

The authors' premise is that biometric systems, relying on fingerprints, retinal scans, speech patterns and facial thermography, are a highly effective solution for the problems of network security and authentication. He then explains how to assess the most effective form of these biometric methods which will meet an organisations' needs, how to implement such systems and understand their overall strengths and weaknesses.

Although security is a highly-important issue, the contents are of value to those interested in biometric systems in general - for example, this is a technology of interest to labour-hire organisations. Such companies may place many hundreds of casual employees on remote client worksites and need verifiable means to determine the employee's attendance and hours worked - in short, an unfoolable version of the old "time clock" punch-card system.

The authors detail at length the foundational mathematics or principles behind each biometric system covered, and spend equal time describing genuine implementations - using readily available (commercial) hardware and software. Helpful screenshots, tables and diagrams accompany these practical components and give full confidence that the reader can reproduce the results themselves (with the appropriate hardware and software, of course). For software developers, sample source code is also provided showing how the biometric devices can be managed from within Visual Basic programs.

Completing the book is a companion Web site with updated source code, articles and case studies.

For those who see value in biometric systems within their organisation - whether for secure authentication or other purposes - this book is a welcome and useful reference, replete with expert advice and guidelines. It is definitely a "must read".

5-0 out of 5 stars Biometric Puzzles Revealed
There is a lot of mystery and myth concerning biometrics and the authors did a good job of exposing the facts and revealing the truth. "Implementing Biometric Security" breaks down the various forms of biometric technology into easily understandable blocks of information. Very few books breakdown the different forms of biometrics to the point that this one does. This is a true guide in helping you choose between biometric authentication systems. I'd recommend it a must read prior to investing time or money into a biometric business solution. The book is chock full of data. I found myself learning something new on almost every turn of the page. The good news is that I found it a fairly easy read and a great reference book. As a bonus, there is a companion site that has some readily available programs to get your biometric effort up and running. An excellent book for your work or personal IT library. ... Read more

Book Description

Ultrafiltration is a pressure-driven, membrane-based separation process, which is used for a broad variety of applications, ranging from the processing of biological macromolecules to wastewater treatment. It has significant advantages over competing separation technologies. Food and biotechnological applications account for nearly 40% of the current total usage of ultrafiltration membranes. Protein bioseparation is an important component of this application segment. Ultrafiltration is used for protein concentration, desalting, clarification and fractionation (i.e. protein-protein separation). Concentration, desalting and clarification are technologically less demanding and have been in used in the bioprocess industry for some time. Protein fractionation, on the other hand, is a challenging proposition and is definitely a more recent development. This book focuses primarily on protein fractionation. ... Read more

Book Description

One of the major problems with drug delivery is the inability of large hydrophilic compounds to pass through the lipid membrane of the cell, thus making drugs such as polypeptides and oligonucleotides of limited therapeutic value. Until recently, the transport of such molecules into the cytoplasmic and nuclear compartments of living cells seemed a far off goal.Hence, the discovery that peptides derived from the HIV Tat protein and homeodomain of the Antennapedia transcription factor (penetratin) can translocate across the plasma membrane of live cells has opened up exciting new possibilities in biomedical research. This book fills the need for a comprehensive update of the research concerning these specialized peptides, called cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs), to which the drug molecule can attach and pass through the cell membrane. Divided into three parts, Cell-Penetrating Peptides: Processes and Applications covers classes of cell-penetrating peptides; mechanisms of cell penetration, interactions of cell-penetrating peptides with plasma membranes, and lipid models; and applications of cell-penetrating peptides. These divisions cover all information from basic biochemistry to clinical application, including a clear description of the general rules for cellular uptake of the transport peptides. The overview of work in this area will lead to better designed novel transport peptides to achieve the more successful application of CPPs in research and therapy. ... Read more

Book Description

Cloning researchers claim to have cloned an embryo that is mostly human, but also part animal. Biotech companies brag about manufacturing human embryos as "products" for use in medical treatments. Echoing long discredited master-race thinking, James Watson, who won a Nobel Prize for co-discovering the DNA double helix, claims that genetically enhanced people will someday "dominate the world."

Events are moving so fast--and biotechnology seems so complicated--that many of us worry that we can't have an informed opinion about these issues that are remaking the human future before our very eyes. But now Wesley J. Smith provides us with a guide to the brave new world that is no longer a figment of our imagination but right around the corner of our lives.

Smith starts with the basic questions. What are stem cells? What is the difference between embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells and which is most promising for medical therapy? What does embryonic stem cell research involve and why is it so controversial? What is its relationship to human cloning?

But in addition to explaining the science of stem cells, this highly readable and carefully researched book reports on the gargantuan "Big Biotech" industry and its supporters in the universities and in the science and bioethics establishments. Smith shows how this lobby works and how the lure of huge riches, mixed with the ideology of "scientism," threatens to impose a "new eugenics" on society that would dismantle ethical norms and call into question the uniqueness and importance of all human life.

"A Consumer's Guide to Brave New World" presents a clear-eyed vision of two potential futures. In one we will use biotechnology as a powerful tool to treat disease and improve the quality of our lives. But in another, darker scenario, we will be steered onto the anti-human path Aldous Huxley and other prophetic writers first warned against fifty years ago when science fiction had not yet become science fact. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful tool in biological sciences
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is one technique in a family of new microscopies called scanning probe microscopies (SPMs) which has recently opened a wide range of novel, fascinating applications for biologists (biochemists, biophysicists, cell biologists, microbiologists,...). This book provides an excellent survey of those applications. It is nicely illustrated with numerous images from leading experts in the field. Clear descriptions of the apparatus and its basic principles are provided in a way accessible to students/scientists that do not have a strong physics background. This book will be useful to biologists, but also non-biologists dealing with biosystems, to evaluate the advantages and limitations of AFM in their specific field and to define appropriate procedures that will lead them to successful experiments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unravelling Biological Applications of SPM
"Atomic Force Microscopy for Biologists" is an excellent introduction for anybody wishing to enter this field. Nearly all aspects are covered. The book opens with an overview of the theory behind Atomic Force Microscopy and the different modes of use. This is presented in a concise manner without over-reliance on complex mathematical equations. Unlike many other volumes, practical advice on sample preparation techniques is provided for common systems such as proteins, cells and DNA. A comprehenive review of leading research in this area at the time of publication is sectioned by biomaterial type. Different approaches to imaging are tackled. The text is supported by numerous supporting images.

In summary I would strongly recommend this book to any biologist planning on carrying out research using SPM imaging technqiues and existing users in the field who wish to broaden their knowledge of SPM imaging and the research already carried out n common biological systems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Lab Resource
I use this book in my molecular biology course and it is well put together, with easy to follow procedures. The manual starts out with the basics (safety, keeping a lab journal, using equipment, measuring, plus some simple experiments),and progress to more complex experiments (cloning, RFLP analysis, western blotting, PCR, for example). The early lab activities can be used to give students a basic grounding in molecular techniques, and the later ones can be used as mini-research projects. The sidebars explain details that help students understand the "whys" of the experiments. The labs pretty much stand on their own, so instructors can pick and choose as needed. ... Read more

Book Description

Gain a working knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics with a minimum of mathematics-a guide for individuals in the biological sciences

An understanding of thermodynamics and kinetics is essential for researchers investigating molecular phenomena in diverse disciplines, including bioorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, and biology. The use of these physical chemistry tools in the biological sciences has exploded over the past fifteen years, but the majority of works on thermodynamics and kinetics require mathematical expertise beyond that of many researchers in the field. Presenting a highly accessible introduction to thermodynamics and kinetics, Thermodynamics and Kinetics for the Biological Sciences employs a minimum of mathematics, assuming only a basic calculus background, while treating a wide range of topics in a logical and easy-to-follow style. All principles and concepts are clearly illustrated through the use of relevant applications and examples from the biological sciences, and explanations are further enhanced with problems and up-to-date references. Written by a world-renowned authority on biochemical kinetics, this remarkable book also features an easy-to-understand statistical development of entropy and a more extensive coverage of chemical kinetics and ligand binding to macromolecules than is usually found in books of this kind. Readers will acquire a working knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics that they can readily apply to biological systems and use for exploring the scientific literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used this book as a supplement in a 4th semester chemistry course targeted for biology and premedical students this past term. It has excellent up-to-date examples and good problems. Hammes does a nice job of presenting at an appropriate level topics from thermodynamics and kinetics needed to read and understand biochemical articles. Such things as the meaning of the biochemical (as opposed to the chemical) standard state are particularly well done -- better than in other books I have seen for this audience.

But why does Wiley price [it at its cost]? Perhaps it is the nice color plates --- but at a lower price I would have had everyone in my class buy this as a suppplement to the text. At this price I am reluctant to do so.

4-0 out of 5 stars Biologic Thermo without all the ideal gas BS
I enjoyed reading and studying this "thermodynamic/kinetics with a biochemistry twist". Most thermo books get too bogged down with ideal gases and the cost in time versus the benefits of material learned is too great. Dr. Hammes however has an easy reading style and focuses in on the "meat" of physical biochemistry pertaining to thermodynamics and kinetics. I am not a formal student, but a cardiologist interested in physical biochemistry. P-Chem learning requires doing the problems. The only drawback to Professor Hammes's textbook is that there are no solved problems or solutions manual for the problems in the back of each chapter. Nerds like me find these problems as a useful exercise in learning to insure that we have mastered the material. You will not be disappointed in this book. ... Read more

The New Everyday Science Explained updates Curt Suplee's coffee table classic with 21st-century answers to many of the most common science questions, and quite a few uncommon ones. Why is the sky blue? How can we get rid of body fat?Why do we get sunburned? Is light a wave or a particle? Organized around general principles such as "Matter and Motion" and "The Chemistry of Life," this is an ideal family reference book, genuinely appropriate for both adults and children. And because it's from National Geographic, it's full of amazing photographs--a tightrope walker, red blood cells killed by malaria protozoans, a monstrous traffic jam--chosen to help explain scientific fundamentals. Within each larger chapter are 15 or more two-page spreads focused on a single idea. With just two to four paragraphs per topic, Suplee manages to clearly communicate the facts in a chunk that's easily digestible, even for science-phobes. For parents who want to be able to help with the homework, students who need a quick reference, and browsers who love National Geographic-caliber knowledge and photos, The New Everyday Science Explained is a delight. --Therese Littleton ... Rodney Boyer's text gives students a modern view of biochemistry. He utilizes a contemporary approach organized around the theme of nucleic acids as central molecules of biochemistry, with other biomolecules and biological processes treated as direct or indirect products of the nucleic acids.

The topical coverage usually provided in current biochemistry courses is all present - only the sense of focus and balance of coverage has been modified. The result is a text of exceptional relevance for students in allied-health fields, agricultural studies, and related disciplines. ... Read more
