This book is absolutely essential for the organic chemist. Well organized by functional group to be protected and well indexed to allow searches by protection group, this book has it all. If you have a question about how to protect a particular functional group, this is the book for it. Under each section a plethora of references may be found--with each one succinctly summarized to avoid looking for references that have nothing to do with what you want. This book is essential whether you are a graduate student studying what reactions you need to know to do the research assigned you or a professor writing research proposals (indeed, I bought my own copy of this book from Amazon because the ones in our school library were always checked out to one of the professors). Indispensible
Quite possibly the most important protecting group book published. The new edition is out and is even more extensive and completely up to date. However, "Greene and Wuts" is a bible in the laboratory. Many of you who will read this have probably scrambled for your copy of "Greene," as it is affectionately known, when designing a synthesis. Mathew's Biochemistry is an excellent book to start this difficult subject! The easy diagrams and interesting notes just keeps you wanting to learn more...Read, read and read. If only it could have a more clinical focus it would be 100% perfect. Combine it with "Harper's Biochemistry" and you will soon run A+ on scores! To die for!

A really excellent Biochem book.
There are so many books out there that is really tough to choose one. This is certainly one of the best available. It combines up to date data (3rd edition - 2000) with great easy to understand writing. It may not be the best books available... but it certainly is one of the best.

great book!
I am a biochemistry major at the university of the philippines. i have several biochem books on my shelf and i just recently purchased a copy of the 2000 edition (i also have the 2nd ed). the book just keeps getting better. the book really helps a lot especially when the class lecture corresponds with how the book presents the subject matter. as a biochem major, i'd say this is a pretty good way to present biochem. it makes it seem easy and fun to read. you look at the pictures and read the caption and you learn the idea in a flash.

One of the best biochemistry book
I have not seen the 2000 edition yet, but the previous edition is very elegantly written. Compare with some other biochemistry text, this book provides another view into biochemistry. Almost (if not all) all the chapters have a special topic after the chapter text, showing you how we can turn the dry text into useful experimental tools for solving life's problem, scientifically. These special topics also give us a view into the physical chemistry world, which has become more and more important at the time.

Illustrative
It's difficult to review a book on a subject as biochemistry, when you're a student, and this is the only book I've read on the subject. This book is used by medical students at the Universty of Bergen, Norway, and as a student I find it very easy to read (if you have mind that biochemistry is not an easy subject). Overall, there is no need to purchase this card set
The main problem with OrgoCards is that it is not really a set of two sided flash cards. It is simply a shortened text book in card form. The cards are not 3 X 5 index cards and they contain a lot of information on them, much of which is not really necessary. You are better off making your own flashcards.

not very helpful
I purchased these cards hoping to improve my understanding and also to use them for reviewing before tests in my organic chem 2 class. The cards were not useful for either task. If you don't already understand the material from class the cards won't help clarify material. In addition, many of the reactions were not even covered by my instructor, particularly in the aldehyde/ketone section of the cards. This could confuse the heck out of someone. These cards might help you review but won't help you learn or understand.

A GOOD ALTERNATIVE TO CLASS-NOTES
The portable cards which constitute this 'book' are well-designed. They will assist any student who is taking undergraduate organic chemistry course prepare for revisions. Although that they lacked details in some respects, their coverage did embrace wide areas.
They are particularly useful in learning about the various nomenclature, as well as the physical and chemical properties of a functional group in a given homologous series.
"OrgoCards" impressed me with the way it handled those nucleophilic substitution reactions that members of Carbonyl group undergo. Despite its haphazard lessons on Acylation, its efforts on Alcohols, Aldehydes, Ketones, Esters, and Carboxylic acids are quite commendable.
This "OrgoCards: Organic Chemistry Review" should be seen either as a textbook complement, or a notebook alternative. I will suggest that you consider buying it if your lecturer is the type that is not enthusiastic about giving class-notes.

Fantastic!!!
These Orgocards were extremely useful not only while studying for my organic chemistry course but especially for the MCAT.

I tried making my own flashcards but I found them immediately obsolete after I got Orgocards which contain the critical information in a very understandable and easy to read format. They were also really a critical part of my studying for the bio section of the MCAT since a lot of the detailed info from o-chem had become a bit fuzzy by that point.

A definite must buy.

I have found the Schaum's Review series very helpful both in review and in independent study, especially for Organic Chemistry. Many times, chemistry students fail to learn key concepts not because they are incomprehensible (thankfully) but rather because they were either explained badly or simply explained in a way that does not make sense to a student. This book explains all the key concepts and includes almost 2000 problems to make sure you understand O. The best modern Organic Chemistry text I have come across!
This is undoubtedly the best modern book for learning Organic Chemistry. It simply cannot be compared with any of the traditional texts like Morrison and Boyd, because it presents Organic Chemical research as a cutting edge science of the present and future. Since it was first published in 2001, in this book you will find accounts of reactions and reagents that you will simply not find in any similar text. From Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira couplings to very important new reactions like Grubbs' olefin metathesis, it covers the whole gamut of current organic chemistry. The most important and fascinating aspect of the book is the almost countless examples of modern drugs, pesticides and other molecules that are presented to illustrate the reactions. In this, for example, one can find the example of how the simple concept of pKa of acids was used in the synthesis of Ranitidine, the best selling drug of today. Or a separate interesting chapter on Sulfur chemistry and Asymmetric Synthesis as applied to important problems in Biology and Medicine.
In fact, the whole approach is very much bioorganic as well as highly practical. From this book, we learn how organic chemistry is used in a highly exciting manner by real life chemists solving real life problems. It truly conveys the excitement in organic chemistry as practiced today. the best undergrad text in organic chemistry available
I bought this book on the suggestion of one of the reviewers to get an overview of fundamentals of Organic Chemistry in my way to clear cumulative examinations.I'm in total agreement with the previous reviewers.I went through many of the undergrad texts in organic and I'm certain that this is the best among available.This is really a 21st cetury organic text.The approach adopted is very personal(as if the authors were directly talking to you).The language used was piquant.This book is a bonanza of information.The good things about this book are they used pKa values to predict the rates of different reactions and they widely used the MOT to interpret the reaction mechanism and stereochemistry in many reactions.They made the embittered subject caviar to the general. Students who have read this book can't be overwhelmed by the mind boggling mechanisms their professors write. I would also like to suggest Norman & Coxon's "Principles of Organic Synthesis"(published by nelsonthornes)for a comprehensive coverage of synthesis stuff.That's a reader friendly text and gives you the logic of synthesis(unlike the Carey's book that presents all the reactions sequentially which are often not rationalized)

One of the best Organic chemistry textbooks
This is an exceptionally good book of organic chemistry. The detailled mechanistic of different substitution reactions has no equivalent in other textbooks. The quantitative use of pKa values to explain reactivity and the good discussion of Hammett relationships makes it also excellent. The book is specially good for biological or pharmaceutical oriented students. They will found plenty of examples why their work is relevant.
As the authors clearly stated, it could not be directly used in a sophomore american course. However, it would be very good as a reference and for advanced organic chemistry courses.

Great intermediate organic chemistry textbook
This book is very good for the students who already have the intro organic chem. I actually bought this book to review the material for my organic synthesis final exam and I am very satisfied. The book covers the reactions and machanisms that are very up-to-date. A lot of them cannot be found in typical intro, American orgo textbook, but they are essential in total synthesis these days. Some of these are Mitsunobu reaction, Heck reaction, Stille coupling, Dieckeman rearrangement, etc. I think the book will also fit the grad student who are seeking to review basic material for cumulative exam, though one should also consult more advance books like March's or Carey's advanced orgo chem all along in this case. I actually found the book rather synthesis-oriented, but it does give enough explanation in terms of molecular orbitals to understand why reactions occur in certain way. However, one should also be aware that the explanations may be quite basic and might not satisfy the hardcore physical organic chemist, but again, quite sufficient for synthetic chemist. I really like the authors' style because they do not only tell you reaction in great details, but they also give you its utility in real world of organic synthesis. They also make extensive connections between chapters and help the reader to understand the big picture.

If you are seeking the intro orgo chem textbook, I think this one may very well be applicable, but be prepared to wrok hard on it because there are a lot more materials than typical intro orgo book and extensive connections between chapters. But for sure, one will gain rigorous foundation for more advanced class like organic synthesis. ... Read more

A good self-study course, if you're interested
I am the reader from Montezuma, NM, and after taking a few more chemistry courses and re-reading the outline, I feel that I should add a few observations to my enthusiastic review from above, which I wrote over 3 years ago.

I own many, many Schaum's Outlines, and am satisfied with all of them. However, before you buy this outline of college chemistry or any of the other Schaum's Outlines, you need to ask yourself what your needs are. If you are looking for a brief review of a subject, you should look elsewhere. If you are taking a course in general chemistry and need a little help with some areas of it, you should look elsewhere--preferably, ask someone with a thorough grasp of the subject to explain those areas to you.

The Schaum's Outlines are best used as a self-study tool. Let's face it, reviewing an entire subject and solving all the problems to gain a solid grasp on the material is difficult and time-consuming, and I suspect few students already enrolled in a course will have the extra time to rehash what they've already been told by reading through a Schaum's Outline, and even fewer will want to go through so many problems--at least in my courses, the problems we are provided are too much to begin with.

For review purposes, Schaum's may help some students, especially if you are reviewing years of material such as I did for my IB exam. However, since you need to know what your course will test you on specifically, you would need to go through the outline along with your notes. Therefore, spending more time reviewing your course notes might be a better use of your time.

Schaum's Outlines are essentially cheaply made textbooks, and, as with other texts, the writing varies widely from one book in the series to another. If a cheap self-study course is what you seek, or you'd like to preview a course you plan to take, by all means go with Schaum's. If you are a student looking for help with a subject, seek it elsewhere.

For help with grades, I suggest you try the Scham's "How to Study" guide and follow their suggestions.

An Excellent Study Aid
This book is concise and complete. The reviews are great, and the problems aren't just busywork--they actually will help you understand the material. For the higher level International Baccalaureate chemistry exam, I have had to review 2 years worth of general chemistry, and this book has helped me immensely.

new kind of textbook
This text covers basic chemical principles in the context of important molecules. It does not spoonfeed students chemical "knowledge." Rather, it encourages students to "discover" knowledge with their peers by participating learning activities. Students who have no desire of understanding chemistry might be better off with a more traditional text so that they can "get by" with a "D" in chemistry and forget about it. Real Physical Chemisry, not dumbed down P chem
Reviewers who rate this book poorly are obviously not physical science or engineering majors. They blame Professor Levine's textbook for their own inability to grasp physical chemistry. Professor Levine's textbook is well organized, starting with first principles. All important topics and results are derived and explained, and Professor Levine points out common mistakes made by students. Chapters end in more advanced topics that one won't appreciate until they are in graduate school. Having used this textbook as an undergraduate gave me a lead over my colleagues in physical chemistry topics. To this day, it is the text I refer to most often when I need to resort to a chemistry reference. Students who can't appreciate the value of this work need to consider purchasing The Illustrated Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences.

This book is awful
This is a horrible book, possibly the worst Chemistry book I have ever had. The book is written in confusing, disconnected, language that is not geared toward the student, but rather to Levine's Ph.D collegues. Levine never gets to the point. Important concepts and ideas are drowned in needless jargon and text. I spent more time "hunting" for the important information rather than studying. In fact, there is so much useless material it is hard to distinguish the relevant from the irrelevant. It made for a very miserable Physical Chemistry course, and I actually learned more when I stopped reading the book and just worked a lot of problems. A great book!!
This is a great resource for anyone wishing to learn basic chemistry or for anyone wishing to brush up on long forgotten basics. It explains challenging concepts using simple terms which can be understood by most people. I am very impressed with the author's teaching style.

Good book, but only for fundamental chemistry.
I am in a chemistry class this year and I am using a book titled "Chemistry" by Raymond Chang. I decided to buy this book as a reference as my textbook has trouble explaining some of the concepts and problems. When I received this book, I noticed that it only covered up to about chapter 8 in my 32 chapter textbook. Although it only explains the fundamentals of chemistry, this book does do a good job explaining those parts.

Try It!
This book was very helpful. I found that this book is more detailed than the 900 page, $160 textbook I bought for the class.

I finally understand chemistry
I needed to get caught up quick for my chem class, and I was extremely rusty because my last class was years ago. This book has been an excellent help. The workbook format is really effective, as I learn when I do things and write them down. The author is an excellent teacher, and breaks everything down into simple, easy-to-understand terms. The self-check sections are nice too, as I can see if I really understood the lesson plan.

Long story short, I am really learning these fundamentals, and it is helping me with the more complex concepts in my class. I am extremely satisfied with this book.

Chemistry - no problem!
I bought the self-teach book 'Chemistry Concepts & Problems' to help with my preparations for a medical entry exam and it is great! It is filled with questions, questions, questions & more questions (and answers of course!) and is a great overview of Chemistry up to grade 12/first year university. It is very easy to understand and learn from.

My only complaint is that immediately under each question is the answer, so you've seen the answer before you can even think about it! Why not put the answers at the back of the book like every other textbook? (This is why I deducted a star). [There are some 'self-tests' which don't have the answers immediately after the question, but I would have preferred no answers until the end, all the way through the book].

This aside, I have, and continue to learn a lot with it.
If you are looking for an easy to understand chemistry textbook as a refresher or to compliment your current chemistry course - go ahead - it's worth the money. ... Read more

waaayyyy too wordy
I found this book too wordy. There was a lack of pictures, charts, and diagrams to help explain what they were trying to say in words. Instead of showing a picture of what the lewis dot structure of a compound looks like, the book tries to explain in words where the single, double, triple bonds are, and the arrangement of the different atoms.

innovative and articulate
Simon and McQuarrie have succeeded in upbraiding the traditional approach to introductory physical chemistry (thermodynamics first, quantum chemistry second) and explaining chemistry the way it ought to be taught, with the fundamentals of quantum theory and molecular dynamics first. The prose and conceptual progression are accessible to the average undergraduate, yet the book covers, in detail, a spectrum of contemporary topics that almost challenge the scope of a physcial chemistry text. It seems that the precedent for future physical chemistry texts has been set and the drab, awkward Atkins text can be abandoned

The Only P-Chem Textbook You'll Need
One of the most emerging fear of P-Chem students is the rigid dificulty and obscureness of the mathematical background. Many textbooks have unfortunately overseen the importance of treating the mathematics and establishing link between the mathematics and the physical interpretation of chemical phenomenon. McQuarrie's text addresses and amends this problem in a brilliant. Difficult mathematical concepts are integrated along with the appropriate topics and are presented in a concise fashion. The first half of the text discusses topics in quantum chemistry while the rest deals with thermodynamics, statistical mechanics,and kinetics. All the equations are backed by clear explanation and mathematical derivation. When I took quantum chemistry (the first course of the P-Chem sequence), we used McQuarrie and it worked just fine in explaining all the topics covered in lecture.s (such as spectroscopy, perturbation theory, etc). Unfortunately professor from the second semester (thermodynamics) decided to abandon McQuarrie and used instead Atkins' Physical Chemistry, which is absolutely not worth the money and very confusing and difficult to follow. I kept the McQuarrie book and used that as study aids and reference, whereas I trashed Atkins as soon as the semester was over (well, I immediately sold it back). McQuarrie is the only P-Chem book you'll find useful and clear.

The best textbook I have ever had to read
First of all, let's get something straight: I am not usually one to recommed textbooks, neither am I am chemistry major who may get perverse pleasure out of reading a textbook.
I am a chemical engineering major who was required to take this class for graduation. As the professor was less than stellar, I depended heavily on this book to pass the class. I found that the book is an enjoyable read. The topics are presented clearly and concisely, without undue wordiness or un-helpful examples. The material presented is excrutiatingly difficult and I believe that the authors did the very best job possible with the material at hand.
In short, don't buy it for fun, but if you are taking physical chemistry, this is a must.

A very thourough treatment of quantum mechanics
I used this book for indroductory quantum mechanics. Its a very difficult book, but after a while I got a bit more used to it. I must say that it covers alot of material in quantum chemistry but it might not be great for an introductory text because its written for a more advanced audience (in my opinion). They go into alot of detail that I think could be left out or left for 'advanced study'. The problem is though, you can't skip any section because everything builds on the previous material.

When the samples problems are worked out, the author assumes that you can jump to conclusions about calculus. They often leave out steps and it is left to the student to work out the math. This can be incredibly frustrating, especially at the beginning when you're just learning how to deal with pchem. The answer book was sometimes a big help, but I think that if you really want to learn how to solve problems, looking at the answers is going to cause you to rely on having the answers for you and you won't learn to think for yourself. I suppose if you really do get stuck, you could use the answer book, but you'd have to be really displiined to not sneak a look at it even when you're just a bit confused! I'd suggest going to a professor or a tutor instead of referring to the answer book. They can show you how to think for yourself.

However, even though I found pchem to be the most challenging class I ever took as an undergraduate and in my honest opinion this book didn't make it any easier, I think this book is pretty good as a reference. It covers alot of information, and if you're good at math, you might very well benefit from it. If you're not so good at math, or don't like spending hours trying to work out samples problems in the book, search around for an easier to understand book. You'll save yourself alot of time!

Not an ideal intro, but a keeper
The University of Pittsburgh used this text my p-chem I class, which deals with quantum physics. This book and the associated answer manual have a wealth of information, and I think this will be a great addition to my library for the years to come. I noticed, however, that the highly detail mathematical derivations of key equations often came at the expense of explanations or illustrations. I like mathematical rigor, but it helps to explain the significance of the mathematical models, and this book could do a much better job. Rather than fishing for the right information in McQuarrie, I found myself going to the Atkins text to help ease me into McQuarrie. This book has great staying power due to its great detail and scope of topics, and I'm treasuring my copy, but it has flaws as a beginning undergraduate text. ... Read more

Fantastic Book
I have to differ from earlier negative reviews: this is a great book. It is clearly written, lavishly illustrated, and the CD is outstanding. The authors have put great effort into this book. They take it upon themselves to lead the student in many ways that make learning more effective. They cross-reference topics from earlier chapters that I as the student may have forgotten. They illustrate topics to make them tangible. They provide both theoretical and practical context for most topics. They created an exhaustive CD with great tools and movies and aids to learning. I may have a different perspective than some because I am a returning student and am familiar with some of the material. But unlike other textbooks I am also reviewing, this one feels complete instead of feeling that the author didn't quite complete a topic and expects me to go hunting for answers. I (obviously) recommend this book heartily, and I am not connected with any of the authors!

Did anyone even edit this book????
I have never been this disappointed with a text book since I started my education. This is coming from someone who was originally excited to take Chemistry. It was poorly written and organized, to the point that information you needed to solve examples were in later sections instead of the section you were studying. And worse of all - I have never seen a textbook with so many typographical errors - anywhere from misspelled words, to wrong solutions in the back of the book (my instructor and I went through the problems in which I thought were incorrect - and yes they really were incorrect in the book) to inconsistency in the chemicals they used in the problem. How could this book have even been released in this condition? I am also writing a letter to the publisher of this book.

Poorly written
This book is very poorly written and has a excessive typos and errors, especially in the answer section in the back - it's come to the point where if I get a different answer from the back of the book I usually assume it is the author who is wrong. It explains the concepts poorly, often over complicating them or leaving out vital pieces of information, or telling you about them a page after you really needed the information. It is not organized logically - we've ended up jumping around to different chapters to make it flow logically. Overall I'm not satisfied with this book on any level - I would have fired the person giving the go-ahead to print and distribute it if I'd been the publisher.

A very disappointing approach to Chemistry
Kotz's Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity is a very disappointing textbooks. As a student using this textbook, I found myself highly confused due to the poor explinations as well as well as how unorganized the format of the book is. If it was not for the fact that I had taken Chemistry earlier I would not have understood half of the material that was taught to me by the book. I am highly disappointed in the textbook.

It is a very good book
~For the first time I took the online class, chemistry, and we use this book as text book. It turns out that it is totally self-study. I have found this book is very well written and easy to follow. Basically I can understand everything after reading each chapter just once without any help from the instructor.
The book comes with 2 CDs. I used it very rarely. I don't think they are that helpful or informative.
You also can access this book companion site from the publisher website. It provides~~ two quizs per chapter. You can take it on-line. If you miss the question, it will tell you which part of text in the book you need to review/pay more attention. The quiz site is more useful than the CD.~ ... Read more
