Book Description

Crystallography and Crystal Defects Revised Edition A. Kelly, Churchill College, Cambridge, UK G. W. Groves, Exeter College, Oxford, UK and P. Kidd, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, UK The concepts of crystallography are introduced here in such a way that the physical properties of crystals, including their mechanical behaviour, can be better understood and quantified. A unique approach to the treatment of crystals and their defects is taken in that the often separate disciplines of crystallography, tensor analysis, elasticity and dislocation theory are combined in such a way as to equip materials scientists with knowledge of all the basic principles required to interpret data from their experiments. This is a revised and updated version of the widely acclaimed book by Kelly and Groves that was first published nearly thirty years ago. The material remains timely and relevant and the first edition still holds an unrivalled position at the core of the teaching of crystallography and crystal defects today. Undergraduate readers will acquire a rigorous grounding, from first principles, in the crystal classes and the concept of a lattice and its defects and their descriptions using vectors. Researchers will find here all the theorems of crystal structure upon which to base their work and the equations necessary for calculating interplanar spacings, transformation of indices and manipulations involving the stereographic projection and transformations of tensors and matrices. ... Book Description

This classic text of elementary dislocation theory has been reprinted to fulfill persistent demand. Because it approaches elementary dislocation theory from its most basic level, the material contained in the volume is as up-to-date as when it was first published. The text addresses many aspects of dislocation theory, including the nature of dislocations, Burgers vectors, motion and its impact on dislocations, internal stresses of dislocations, and multiplication of dislocations. The topics of this text are fundamental to the theory of dislocation behavior. Because dislocation is now widely recognized as a key factor determining the behavior of crystalline solids, specialists in electronics materials, as well as fracture mechanics, and materials science and engineering should have a solid grounding in this field. A large number of problems is provided in the text. ... Read more

Book Description

Polymorphism - the multiplicity of structures or forms - is a term that is used in many disciplines. In chemistry it refers to the existence of more than one crystal structure for a particular chemical substance. The properties of a substance are determined by its composition and by its structure. In the last two decades, there has been a sharp rise in the interest in polymorphic systems, as an intrinsically interesting phenomenon and as an increasingly important component in the development and marketing of a variety of materials based on organic molecules (e.g. pharmaceuticals, dyes and pigments, explosives, etc.). This book summarizes and brings up to date the current knowledge and understanding of polymorphism of molecular crystals, and concentrates it in one comprehensive source. The book will be an invaluable reference for students, researchers, and professionals in the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible for liquid crystals!
Like every book by de Gennes, this book is a classic! This latest edition in a "must have" text for everyone even remotely associated with liquid crystals. The text is written in a self contained fashion, but the mathematics and physics is of advanced level, and to fully appreciate the content one must have some grip on statistical mechanics, tensor and vector algebra, electromagnetism and continuum physics. Thus it is ideal for physicists, a rewarding challenge for chemists and starting researchers.

To get a simple understanding of liquid crystals (without chemical and mathematical equations), a text by Peter J. Collins (Liquid Crystals: Nature's delicate phase of matter) is highly recommended. For people interested in synthesis of liquid crystals, this text has almost nothing to offer and maybe another text by Collins is more useful. Another important text on the physics of liquid crystals is by Chandershekar. But bottomline is while you may want to look at other texts for specific needs (synthesis or display devices), The Physics of Liquid Crystals by de Gennes is the book one must have and one must read to make a living in this area. (of course, I will read the whole text too....) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction for beginners
The ability of calcite crystals to display double diffraction is interesting and one of the more popular demonstrations in physics classes all over the world. This book gives a good introduction to optical cystallography and is written for individuals that have no previous background in optics or materials science. It goes without saying that optical crystallography is of enormous importance technologically, and employs thousands of technicians, engineers, and scientists. There is not one part of this field that is not interesting, and readers will see why when perusing this book.

Crystallography makes heavy use of a branch of mathematics called group theory, in order to describe the symmetries of crystals. The author uses the concept of a group in this book, but only descriptively, so as to keep the book geared toward a general audience. For example, a "point group" is defined as a collection of operations on an object that leave one point in the object fixed and also preserves distances between the points constant. The author gives examples of symmetry operations that cannot be part of a group. She then goes on to show that not all possible point groups can be used to describe the symmetry of arrangement of atomic planes in crystals, and thus the number of possible point groups is 32. The includes two tables of all 32 of these crystallographic point groups, one table where the point groups are listed by symbols with the symmetry elements of each group tabulated, the other table composed of diagrams of the symmetry elements and their stereographic projections.

Readers will still have to know some elementary mathematics, such as trigonometry, in order to appreciate the Bragg law of X-ray diffraction. The importance of this law cannot be overstated, as the use of it gives us information on the distances between the crystallographic planes.

The author also includes some brief history of the discoveries in crystallography. In addition, color photographs are included to illustrate the optical phenomena between crossed polarizers, uniaxial interference, and general interference. With a few cheap polarizers and optical materials, readily available from scientific supply houses, readers will be ready to experiment with the concepts that are discussed in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Amateur
The first paragraph of the Preface is herein quoted:

"This is a book about the behavior of light in crystals. Since it is written for people with no previous training in either the subject of crystals or the subject of light, the first six chapters tell what sort of thing a crystal is and the seventh tells about some of its physical properties. The remaining chapters describe some of the effects produced on light, mainly polarized light, by crystals and so constitute an introduction to optical crystallography."

My copy of several years ago came with a piece of polarizing film; don't know whether this is still included, if not one can order a sheet from Edmund Scientific catalog. This little book is clearly, lucidly written for the student and the amateur. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book to thermodynamics of crystals
I found this is a very good reference for my beginning in studying of lattice dynamics and thermodynamics of crystals. It provides the theory framework for the equilibrium thermodynamics properties of perfect crystals. To me, this book is very helpful to understand the theory in physics of solid state. It starts with the basic theories of thermodynamics, such as, thermodynamics functions, state variables, wave propagation, etc.. Then it moves to crystal potentials (and their expansions about the equilibrium configuration, the stability and symmetries. etc), to crystal vibration problems(eigenvalue problems and operator theories for Hamiltonian system), and to the advance topic of phonon thermodynamics, band-structure theory, and pseudopotential perturbation theory. Finally, it provides the model calculation and experimental data analysis. All materials are treated gradually from simple to complicated (I means mathematically) Graduate level knowledge in mathematics is necessary to read this book. Allover, I think this is a very good reference. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars what is the purpose of this book?
Reading this book created mixed feelings.

It is nice to see books of course in the very important
but relatively little studied case of mechanical properties
of solids and liquids (as oposed to elecrical properties).

The book starts promisingly by claiming a first priciples
discussion. However the discussions following are highly
incomplete (sketchy) with continuous references to
a previous book by the author. The level of detail
is dissapointing and the author seems to address experts
in his field rather than students.

I think you can safely go over this book; the Born Huang
book is much more complete and useful.

Overall, the book misses completely its educational purpose;
it might be useful to experts in the field, but then they
can always read a plethora of reviews in research journals
(for free). ... Read more
