Book Description

This brief teaching edition is a condensed, inexpensive version of Volume A of International Tables for Crystallography. It consists of: complete descriptions of the 17 plane groups, useful for the teaching of symmetry 24 selected space-group examples, of varying complexity and distributed over all seven crystal systems those basic text sections of Volume A that are necessary for the understanding and handling of space groups (Parts 1, 2, 3 and 5). The purpose of the teaching edition is threefold: (i) It should provide a handy (and inexpensive) tool for researchers and students wishing to familiarize themselves with the use of the space-group tables in Volume A.(ii) It is designed for use in classroom teaching, and with this aim in mind the price has been kept as low as possible. In order to achieve this, the material has been reprinted from Volume A without any changes, except for pagination.(iii) It may serve as a laboratory handbook because the 24 examples include most of the frequently occurring space groups, for both organic and inorganic crystals. The fifth edition of the brief teaching edition has been reviewed by M. Warren [Mineral. Mag. (2003). 67, 826-827]. A discount is available for the brief teaching edition when purchasing 10 or more copies. A textbook for the senior undergraduate or graduate student beginning a serious study of X-ray crystallography. It will be of interest both to those intending to become professional crystallographers and to those physicists, chemists, biologists, geologists, metallurgists and others who will use it as a tool in their research. All major aspects of crystallography are covered--the geometry of crystals and their symmetry, theoretical and practical aspects of diffracting X-rays by crystals and how the data may be analyzed to find the symmetry of the crystal and its structure. Includes recent advances such as the synchrotron as a source of X-rays, methods of solving structures from power data and the full range of techniques for solving structures from single-crystal data. Computer programs are provided for carrying out many operations of data-processing and solving crystal structures including by direct methods. These programs are required for many of the examples given at the end of each chapter but can be used to create new examples by which students can test themselves or each other. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of X-ray Diffraction
Klug & Alexanders book on X-ray diffraction has since it's release, of the first edition in 1954, been and still is the ultimate book on X-ray diffraction procedures. It covers any subject of interest to X-Ray Diffraction form "Elementary Crystallography" and "Properties and Production of X-rays" through "Precision and Errors" to "Operations of X-ray machinery" and many more. Even today, over 25 years after the release of the lasest edition, "X-ray Diffraction Procedures" is because of it's thoroughness, attention to detail, number and depth of subjects dealt with still a must for anybody working with X-Ray Diffraction. The depth, width and fundamental nature of the subject dealt with, and the book as a whole, more than makes the fact the it isn't up to date with the latest technical innovations. 1-0 out of 5 stars Mostly a waste of money
The intention of this book is to provide a description of crystal structures for materials used in materials science and engineering and to emphasize relationships between structures and physical properties and to prepare the reader with the tools to design new materials with improved properties. The book is divided into 4 chapters covering the fundamentals of atoms and molecules, the fundamentals of crystallography, crystal structures, and structural changes of crystals. The intended audience consists of engineers and scientists who work on materials development. Chemists, physicists, and geologists may find useful material in descriptive crystallography and crystal structures, but no attempt has been made to cover other topics (e.g., synthetic chemistry, phase diagrams, nucleation kinetics, magnetic properties, etc.) that would be found in a solid state chemistry text.

Skip the first chapter entirely. Electronic structure and chemical bonding discussion is dated and and often wrong. Some material duplicates that found in physical and inorganic chemistry texts and virtually all such texts give a better exposition than is found here. Molecular orbital theory is presented in a confused and confusing fashion. A final section of this chapter deals with band theory; it contains an amazing number of errors in physics, grammar, and presentation. Readers would do better to go to a number of other books for a more modern, more correct, and clearer treatment of chemical bonding and electronic structure-property relationships.

The remaining chapters in this book are more worthwhile. The fundamentals of crystallography are ably presented. Here, and throughout the remainder of the text, analytical details in the text are supplemented with very good greyscale drawings that emphasize the geometrical aspects of the subject quite nicely. Point group and space group symmetries are presented in a mostly descriptive fashion, with only a brief foray into the more formal aspects of space group theory at the end of the chapter. Students who need more formal training will need to go further than the treatment given in this section. Chapter 3 presents basic crystal structures. This is fairly standard material and is covered in a much deeper and more systematic way in reference works such as Well's classic book, Structural Inorganic Chemistry. Nevertheless, modern graphics allow the reader to see any given structure in more than one way and the authors have often placed alternative presentations (ball-and-stick, polyhedra, space-filling) together in an especially effective way. This is undoubtedly the strongest pedagogical device in this book. The authors have clearly decided that each way of looking at the structure offers its own advantages and by combining modes of presentation they can exploit them all. In chapter 4, the text finishes with a mostly descriptive treatment of structural changes in crystals. Thermodynamic aspects are mentioned in places, though not emphasized. Also, symmetry is used to describe some changes, but readers are not taken through the rigorous physical aspects of the subject. What is imparted to the reader is some feeling for the range of crystal transformations possible and with the illustrations provided, the reader should be able to gain some genuine appreciation for the subject. The materials discussed in this last chapter are of decidedly mineralogical flavor - metallic systems are not discussed.

The English is atrocious. On page 95, for example, there are two inches of text below a figure. This text includes eleven sentences, all of which need some corrections or need to be completely rewritten. My eleven-year-old daughter correctly identified eight obvious errors in this passage in three minutes. In a five-minute random perusal of the text, I spotted the several misspellings and typographical errors that even a spell-checking program should have caught, including "structucral", "thermondymanics", and "primarilly" (sic). While the most egregious errors are concentrated in certain sections of the book, a few errors of grammatical construction find their way into most sections of the text.

Grossly overpriced for a book that suffers from such poor editing. ... Read more

The art of solving a structure from powder diffraction data has developed rapidly over the last ten years to the point where numerous crystal structures, both organic and inorganic, have been solved directly from powder data. However, it is still an art and, in contrast to its single crystal equivalent, is far from routine. The art lies not only in the correct application of a specific experimental technique or computer program, but also in the selection of the optimal path for the problem at hand. Written and edited by experts active in the field, and covering both the fundamental and applied aspects of structure solution from powder diffraction data, this book guides both novices and experienced practitioners alike through the maze of possibilities. ... Book Description

Photonic Crystals: The Road from Theory to Practice explores the theoretical road leading to the practical application of photonic band gaps. These new optimal devices are based on symmetry and resonance and the benefits and limitations of hybrid "two dimensional" slab systems in three dimensions. The book also explains that they also signify a return to the ideal of an omnidirectional band gap in a structure inspired by and emulating the simplicity of two dimensions. Finally, the book takes a look at computational methods to solve the mathematical problems that underlie all undertakings in this field.Photonic Crystals: The Road from Theory to Practice should rapidly bring the optical professional and engineer up to speed on this intersection of electromagnetism and solid-state physics. It will also provide an excellent addition to any graduate course in optics. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Poor Value
Taken by itself, it isn't a bad book BUT most (80%) of the content is just *reprinted journal articles* which, if you work/study anywhere with decent journal access, you can get for FREE. Just look up Joannopoulos' major papers. The other 20% of the book is covered in more detail in his other book, Photonic Crystals:Molding the Flow of Light.

And this is not even mentioning the absolutely outrageous price that the publisher wants for this miniscule tract. It looks like it was just photocopied (poorly - you can even see where the toner didn't distribute properly) and bound. Some of the graphs and illustrations were meant to be shown in color in the journals and are, of course, illegible in black and white.

I recommend buying the other book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book will be very useful for future researcher in the emerging field oh photonic crystal.

4-0 out of 5 stars At last, Photonic Crystals book for beginner in the field.
Recently I had been working on simulation of light propagation in photonic crystals, and found that many materials (text, papers, etc) are difficult for beginners, especially non-physics majors like myself (I'm a computer science people).

[Note that this book itself does not state that it is for beginners, but the tone of the text itself said it all.]

This book fills in the gap nicely. It has a good introduction topics and good explanation, i.e., english rather than mathematical formula, for otherwise rather difficult things. A lot of things, including computational model, are introduced in the text (even I think the computational model section is a little bit shallow). Note that this book might missed out some recent advancement like nonlinear waveguide. However, taking into account that this book is rather for beginners of this rapidly-changing field, it is fine with me.

Cons::
This book has some cons, however. First, it is a little bit pricy. Considering that it is only 154 pages long and pricing at 125$, it is almost $1/page. And at this price, you would expect it to be in full colors with good quality paper (like Joannopoulos' previous "Photonic Crystals: Molding the Flow of Light" book). However, a copy I recieved has rather bad quality paper and only in monochrome. And for this reason, I had lowered the rate of this otherwise a 5-stars book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pedagogical introduction to the physical prop. of crystals
"Tensor Properties of Crystals" introduces gradually the readerto the physical properties of anisotropic crystals. It is a remarkable bookfrom the pedagogical point of view. In contrast with other books in thefield it doesn't require a deep previous knowledge of mathematics andcrystallography. Crystal symmetry and tensors are introduced in a verycomprehensive way in the first two chapters. The remaining chapters aredevoted to the areas of elasticity and electric and optical properties ofanisotropic crystals. Some worked examples are very useful, specially tothose who are begining with tensor manipulation. (These comments refer tothe 1st edition of the book (1989)). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best pedagogical book on Space Groups
This book provides a good, clear introduction to Space Groups that will make using International Tables straightforward. The applications are almost entirely crystallographic (very few applications to solid state physics), but a reader can move to that area after studying this book.
I like this treatment better than any I've seen for graduate students and practicing nontheorists.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for applied scientists & engineers
If I needed to characterize this book in a single word, I would say...excellent. Space groups are a rather abstract discipline in crystallography and hence, many books dealing with the subject are usually very theoretical. Burns' book is written for the applied scientist or engineer who needs a working knowledge on a sophisticated concept such as Space groups. The book is structured in a quite pedagogical style which lends itself to a pleasant self-study perfectly well. Worked-out examples are plenty which helps the reader to familiarize him/herself with the use of the International Tables for Crystallography. The level of the treatment is elementary, yet its scope is comprehensive and the treatment is rigorous. The book is ideally suited for those working in the solid state sciences.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for the beginner
Great book for the beginner who does'nt know very much about space groups or the International tables. The book goes through and shows you examples and step by step of what all that stuff means. It's got some examples at the end, but I skipped that. One annoying thins about this book is that all the settings are in 1st setting for monoclinic so you get p21/a instead of the standard p21/c. If you become a crystallographer you'll know what I mean. Besides that though, it's a great book, very easy reading. Recommended for the beginner. ... Read more

Book Description

The aim of the book is to describe and analyse peculiarities of classical and quantum dynamics of a crystal as a spatially periodic structure. Both traditional questions like the spectrum of vibrations, the idea of phonon gas, dislocations etc. and new aspects like the theory of quantum crystals, solitons in 1D crystals, dislocation theory of melting of 2D crystals etc. are discussed. The author gives an explanation of a set of phenomena which entered into solid state physics during the last decades. It is shown that the crystal properties are sensitive to the dimension of the crystal and its defect structure, and depend slightly on whether the periodic structure consists of atoms, or electrical dipoles, or magnetic moments (spins). Considerable attention is devoted to the dislocation mechanics as a basis of theory of plasticity and numerous technological applications of crystal materials. ... Read more

Book Description

When bombarded with X-rays, solid materials produce distinct scattering patterns similar to fingerprints. X-ray powder diffraction is a technique used to fingerprint solid samples, which are then identified and cataloged for future use-much the way the FBI keeps fingerprints on file. The current database of some 70,000 material prints has been put to a broad range of uses, from the analysis of moon rocks to testing drugs for purity.

Introduction to X-ray Powder Diffractometry fully updates the achievements in the field over the past fifteen years and provides a much-needed explanation of the state-of-the-art techniques involved in characterizing materials. It covers the latest instruments and methods, with an emphasis on the fundamentals of the diffractometer, its components, alignment, calibration, and automation.

The first three chapters outline diffraction theory in clear language, accessible to both students and professionals in chemistry, physics, geology, and materials science. The book's middle chapters describe the instrumentation and procedures used in X-ray diffraction, including X-ray sources, X-ray detection, and production of monochromatic radiation. The chapter devoted to instrument design and calibration is followed by an examination of specimen preparation methods, data collection, and reduction. The final two chapters provide in-depth discussions of qualitative and quantitative analysis.

While the material is presented in an orderly progression, beginning with basic concepts and moving on to more complex material, each chapter stands on its own and can be studied independently or used as a professional reference. More than 230 illustrations and tables demonstrate techniques and clarify complex material.

Self-contained, timely, and user-friendly, Introduction to X-ray Powder Diffractometry is an enormously useful text and professional reference for analytical chemists, physicists, geologists and materials scientists, and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in materials science and analytical chemistry.

X-ray powder diffraction-a technique that has matured significantly in recent years-is used to identify solid samples and determine their composition by analyzing the so-called "fingerprints" they generate when X-rayed. This unique volume fulfills two major roles: it is the first textbook devoted solely to X-ray powder diffractometry, and the first up-to-date treatment of the subject in 20 years.

This timely, authoritative volume features:
* Clear, concise descriptions of both theory and practice-including fundamentals of diffraction theory and all aspects of the diffractometer
* A treatment that reflects current trends toward automation, covering the newest instrumentation and automation techniques
* Coverage of all the most common applications, with special emphasis on qualitative and quantitative analysis
* An accessible presentation appropriate for both students and professionals
* More than 230 tables and illustrations

Introduction to X-ray Powder Diffractometry, a collaboration between two internationally known and respected experts in the field, provides invaluable guidance to anyone using X-ray powder diffractometers and diffractometry in materials science, ceramics, the pharmaceutical industry, and elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for theory and application.
This book provides an introduction to powder diffraction theory as well as a comprehensive list of everything involved with the actual diffractometer. This is not just a theory book nor a technical manual. It describes clearly all the factors involved in the production of x-rays, the workings of motors and detectors to the reasons for using divergence slits as well as the principles of phase identification and quantitative analysis. It is a great book for someone who will be using a diffractometer for the first time and will be doing the work themselves. This is not a crystallography text. It is more a handbook of practical applied powder diffraction. Well worth the money. ... Read more
