5-0 out of 5 stars I wish there were more like it!
I discovered this book in my final year of my PhD, and I am so glad I did. It was indispensible to me and a great revision guide in the time leading upto my viva. I am now doing a post doc in protein crystallography and still use it and recommend it to graduate students and undergrads. I just wish that there were more books similar to this one, but going through other protein crystallography programs and showing how to solve structures. This book is mainly for XtalView and SHELX structure solutions, can you write another one on O and CNS & REFMAC structure solutions! Totally worth every penny and have had to buy another copy as the one I had originally has worn away!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for crystallography newbies!
I'd read the first book, back in my undergrad days and resorted to another to get the overall jist of things for basic understanding. But now that I'm actually a "practicing" crystallographer, I find this book indispensable. McRee explains with both detail and DIRECTION such that not only is the context understandable, but it is USABLE...hence the title of the book. All I could wish for were problems, like solving difference Pattersons and the likes... ... Read more

Book Description

This book provides valuable information for all scientists and engineers interested in materials properties.Coverage discusses the measurement and analysis of textures, the prediction of polycrystal properties from measured textures and known single crystal properties, and the prediction of the development of texture and the ensuing anisotropic properties during elastic and plastic deformation. It also gives an overview of observed textures in metals, ceramics and rocks. There is a balance between theoretical concepts and experimental techniques. The book addresses several issues. Part I provides tools and describes methods to obtain quantitative data on textures of polycrystals. It should be of interest to experimentalists. Part II emphasizes modeling of deformation and incorporates theoretical concepts of mechanics. Part III illustrates successful applications in engineering and earth sciences. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
Written by experts, a must for all texture researchers. This book will be the preeminent text in its field for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete review on the complex anisotroic materials world
A complete and rigorous review on this subject, this book notably solves the compromise of answering scientific inquiries of general knwoledge on anisotropic materials behaviour and the easy and quick browsing for specific materials properties. This is achieved through the addition of many ilustrative figures and examples (specially texture pole figures based on observed and simulated results ) as well as the big amount of references to other studies and publications all over the text. Physicists, engineerings and crystalographers inside the materials science scope will find this book surprisingly complete, amusing and helpful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars useful introduction in gel-crystallization
The book is a good starting-point for everyone interested in crystal growing in inorganic silicate gels. Although it is limited to sodiummetasilicate-gels (more or less ignoring any other gelling media), it provides the reader with very useful hints and applications of this special crystal growing technique. Starting with the basics of the method, the reader is introduced to the mechnanism and "background" of the chemical and physical properties of the gels as well as the crystals grown in such gels. I found this book very useful in the first part of my Ph.D. project, because I don't know any other publication providing details about this technique. ... Read more

Book Description

Many materials used in industry are crystals. These crystals often show anomalies, such as sudden softening or embrittlement at certain temperatures. If controlled, such behavior can be extremely useful, for manufacturing and high-technology applications. This is one of the first books to describe the recently determined physical origins of such behavior, and provides an insight into the important thermodynamic principles and microstructural properties involved. It starts with the fundamental principles of structural phase transitions in materials. Ferroelasticity, twinning and related microstructures are then described.Landau-type theories of phase transitions are introduced, together with details of elastic and specific heat anomalies, the formation of spontaneous strain, and the generation of solitary waves at temperatures close to the transition point. ... Book Description

The fields of structural chemistry and biochemistry have blossomed in the last seventy years since X-ray diffraction was discovered in 1912. Dorothy Hodgkin, who obtained a Nobel Prize in 1965 for her X-ray diffraction work wrote 'a great advantage of X-ray analysis as a method of chemical structure analysis is its power to show some totally unexpected and surprising structure with, at the same time, complete certainty.' The results of all X-ray diffraction studies are used by chemists and buiochemists but these scientists need to be able to appreciate the significance and extent to which these results may be used.

A number of books written for practicing crystallographers cover the theory and applications of X-ray diffraction, but few are of real practical use to non-specialists. In 'Crystal Structure Analysis for Biologists and Chemists', the general principles of crystal structure are presented in a highly readable way. The book of Glusker, who is internationally renowned, provides good coverage of theory, including data and understanding their significance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best in the market
This book provides the reader with a very good, updated and, for most of the topics covered, an in-depth discussion of all subjects associated with work hardening, recovery and recrystallization. Most of the physical metallurgy aspects of metal's deformation and related annealing processes are well presented, including good chapters on textures, hot working and modelling. The authors are well known experts in the field of physical metallurgy and have done a very good job. This is the best book on recrystallization available today, for both undergraduate and graduate levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers it all
My professor called this more a "research compendium" than a "text."Fair enough -- but it works well enough as a text.

The book covers basically all the different aspect of annealing metals:The cold worked state, recovery, recrystallization, grain growth.

The covery of the cold worked state is brief, but good.It emphasizes how stacking fault energy dominates the dislocation structure, which dominates the other processes, plus other factors (ie, strain TYPE).

The covery of recovery is fine, and it handles the static recrystallization of single phase, multiphase and ordered materials, as well as dynamic RX.Then, it hits grain growth.

The nice thing about this book it that it also covers texture effects, both in terms of cold-working and annealing, as well as methods of texture measurement and representation (pole figures, invers PF's, ODF's).

Short answer:this book covers everything.

Recrystallization is a phenomenon well known for a long time, but it is only know we can visualize and feel the effects of its importance more clearly with different models and latest development in Technology, as the development of new alloys. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A woman ahead of her time.
This amazing biography of crystallographer is even more interesting because it is the author's first book.Despite being a non-scientist, Ferry does a superb job of exploring the life of her subject. It is a joy to read, treating with equal respect Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin's personal and scientific life. The central role of crystallography (with excursions into biology, chemistry, and physics) is not minimized, but it would be easily understandable to the non-scientific reader.Besides being a woman scientist in Great Britain at a time when women were not even eligible for college-level degrees at some schools, Dorothy was a successful wife and mother, raising several children almost alone while her husband worked in faraway places. But rather than concentrate on the difficulties, Dorothy put all her efforts into pursuing science, and thus she became fantastically successful, eventually winning the Nobel Prize for her work on the structures of Vitamin B12 and penicillin.Everyone in her field respected her, no one suggested her proper place was anywhere else, and so she avoided many of the pitfalls women in science often face.As long as she lived, Dorothy worked for what she believed in, whether it was solving the structures of complicated bio-active molecules, peace, or international communication. She built friendships all over the world, and used her fame and personality to help people. This book will make you a Dorothy Hodgkin fan, which is a tribute to both the subject's worthiness and the author's skill. ...
