5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro to SEM/TEM!
As an SEM/EDS (read the book) process engineer working with technicians at many different levels, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource. It is written at very basic level making it accessible to anyone, with or without a scientific background. Whenever someone wants to know more about how the SEM functions then I can tell them in a five minute spiel, I give them a copy of this book. The material is slightly dated (early 90's technology), but is still relevant to anyone in the field today. A great book on all of the basics. ... Read more

Book Description

Charles Townes is one of the leading figures in twentieth-century physics, inventor of the maser and the laser, and one of the pioneers in the use of spectroscopic techniques to determine the atomic composition of stars. This book is the memoir of a life devoted to scientific research, and also to the application of this research in the public sphere. A Nobel laureate, Townes was also the first scientist to accept a full-time position advising the Executive Branch, and later was a founder of the Jasons, a very influential group of scientists independently advising the U.S. government on defense matters. He also served on the board of General Motors. The book describes the history of the maser, of which the laser is a special application, and also sheds light on the complex relationship between science and policy from Truman to Reagan. Townes is a revered figure, with a powerful personal magnetism, and his book should attract attention from physicists and engineers as well as anyone interested in the history of modern technology and the development of federal defense policies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars From a fellow Paladin
This relatively short book is filled with interesting stories, people and events--not all of which are about physics or science. In fact, this is an enjoyable book for even the most determined liberal arts type who normally might avoid reading about physics. In fact, Dr. Townes seems to approach science and life with a "liberal arts" attitude: curious about everything and more than a little adventurous. He challenges readers to look under all the rocks for the excitement and learning to be found there. Read it for enjoyment and edification (a rare combination these days).

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done!
Townes' wonderful auto-biography gives us great insight into the mind of one of the 20th Centuries most important scientists. He mixes science with his personal story creating a wonderful tale of how he made the LASER work, and how the LASER actually does work. Townes includes a tremendous amount information about the technicalities of being a great scientist. From government panels to patent disputes--he writes about it all! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not in-depth
This book gave me a quick and readable introduction to the STEM. Good work on the writers' part.

However, this is a short book, and doesn't go into much detail. It would be a good book for someone just starting out in STEM, but anyone with STEM experience might find only a few bits and pieces of the book enlightening. ... Read more

Book Description

How deep we can see inside Nature's smallest secrets? Will it be possible some day in the near future to investigate living structures at atomic level? This area of study is very interdisciplinary, since it applies the principles and the techniques of biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering to elucidate the structures of biological macromolecules, of supramolecular structures, organelles, and cells. This book offers updated information on how much information we are able to obtain in the exploration of the inner details of biological specimens in their native structure and composition.

The book deals with the implementation of laser beam and stage scanning systems incorporating confocal optics or multiphoton microscopy; the advent of new electro-optical detectors with great sensitivity, linearity, and dynamic range; the possibility of 2D fast image enhancement, reconstruction, restoration, analysis and 3D display, and the application of luminescence techniques (FLIMT, FRET combined with the use of quantum dots), which gives the possibility to investigate the chemical and molecular spatio-temporal organization of life processes; Electron Microscopy and Scanning Force Microscopy (SFM), are also presented, which has opened completely new perspectives for analyzing the surface topography of biological matter in its aqueous environment at a resolution comparable to that achieved by EM.

Book Description

This textbook develops the concepts of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray diffractometry (XRD) that are important for the characterization of materials. It emphasizes themes common to both techniques, such as scattering from atoms, wave interference, and the formation and analysis of diffraction patterns. It explains the uniqueness of each technique, especially imaging and spectroscopy in the TEM. Simple citations of rules are avoided as much as possible, and both practical and theoretical issues are explained in detail. The book can be used as both an introductory and advanced-level graduate text since sections/chapters are sorted according to difficulty and grouped for use in quarter and semester courses on TEM and XRD. Numerous problems are provided at the end of each chapter to reinforce key concepts, and solutions are available to instructors. Appendices provide procedures for introductory laboratory exercises, and up-to-date tabulations of physical data useful for TEM and XRD. ... Read more

Book Description

Crystallographic texture or preferred orientation has long been known to strongly influence material properties. Historically, the means of obtaining such texture data has been though the use of x-ray or neutron diffraction for bulk texture measurements, or transmission electron microscopy (TEM) or electron channeling for local crystallographic information. In recent years, we have seen the emergence of a new characterization technique for probing the microtexture of materials. This advance has come about primarily through the automated indexing of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns. The first commercially available system was introduced in 1994, and since then the growth of sales worldwide has been dramatic. This has accompanied widening applicability in materials science problems such as microtexture, phase identification, grain boundary character distribution, deformation microstructures, etc. and is evidence that this technique can, in some cases, replace more time-consuming TEM or X-ray diffraction investigations. The purpose of this book is to provide the fundamental basis for EBSD. The formation and interpretation of EBSD patterns and the gnomonic projection are described as the framework for materials characterization using EBSD. Traditional representation of texture in orientation space is discussed in terms of stereographic projections, pole figures, inverse pole figures, and orientation distribution functions before introducing the Rodrigues-Frank representation of crystallographic texture. The fundamentals of automated EBSD and the accuracy of EBSD measurements are then discussed. Current hardware and software as well as future prospects for analyzing EBSD data sets are reviewed. A brief mention of the criterion required for the purchase of an EBSD system is included as an aid to this relatively new area of materials characterization. The section concludes with chapters from three manufacturers of EBSD equipment that highlight recent advances in capabilities. The book concludes with a review of recent applications of the technique to solve difficult problems in materials science as well as demonstrates the usefulness of coupling EBSD with other approaches such as numerical analysis, plasticity modeling, and TEM. Attention is paid to the measurement and mapping of strain using EBSD as well as the characterization of deformed microstructures, continuous recrystallization, analysis of facets, ceramics, and superconducting materials. ... Book Description

Laser cooling allows one to slow atoms to roughly the speed of a mosquito and to control their motions with unprecedented precision. This elegant technique, whereby atoms, molecules, and even microscopic beads of glass, can be trapped in small regions of free space by beams of light and subsequently moved at will using other beams, has revolutionized many areas of physics. In particular, it provides a useful research tool for the study of individual atoms, for investigating the details of chemical reactions, and even for the study of atomic motion in the quantum domain. This text begins with a review of the relevant aspects of quantum mechanics; it then turns to the electromagnetic interactions involved in slowing and trapping atoms, in both magnetic and optical traps. The concluding chapters discuss a broad range of applications, including atomic clocks, studies of ultra-cold collision processes, diffraction and interference of atomic beams, optical lattices, and Bose-Einstein condensation. The book is intended for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students who have some basic knowledge of optics and quantum mechanics. An extensive bibliography provides access to the current research literature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get a good understanding of laser cooling.
Laser cooling and trapping techniques have given researchers new tools to explore the atom's dynamics and control. The book gives a good introduction to the forces that arise when an atom interacts with a light (laser) field, and puts a lot of emphasis on giving the reader an excellent idea of what's going on when atoms and photons interact.

Rather than giving all the details of the mathematical and quantum mechanics background that is needed to understand the subject the authors concentrate on giving a clearer picture of the real physics involved.

The book starts with a review of the quantum mechanics principles used to understand laser cooling and trapping, which serves as a good remainder for a person who already has a basic grasp of it.

Although all the mathematical analysis that shows how the formulas and mathematical expressions are derived is not done in the book, the presentation is sufficient to guide the readers interested in it do the work by themselves.

The book also has an excellent reference guide that an interested person can use to get all the mathematical and experimental details on the field. ... Read more
