Book Description

Photonics concerns the generation, transport, processing anddetection of light. It underlies a large amount of industrialactivity, mainly devoted to information technology, telecommunications, environmental monitoring, biomedical science andinstrumentation. The field has received a powerful impetus recently with theintroduction of nanoscale concepts. Moreover, organic materials nowappear as key components in photonic devices such as light-emittingdiodes, integrated lasers, or photovoltaic cells. Organic molecularsystems offer unique opportunities in nanophotonics since bothtop-down and bottom-up strategies can be pursued towards thenanoscale. This book gathers the proceedings of the NATO advanced researchworkshop on "Organic Nanophotonics", held in Aix-en-Provence, France,August 25-29, 2002. It constitutes a snapshot of the state ofthe art in the novel, emerging research area of nanophotonics based onorganic molecules and materials. ... Read more

Book Description

The interaction of electron beams with solid targets has been studied since the early part of the last century. Present interest is spurred on by the fundamental role played by the electron-solid interaction in - among other areas - scanning electron microscopy, electron-probe microanalysis and Auger electron spectroscopy. This book aims to investigate selected aspects of the interaction of electrons with matter (backscattering coefficient for bulk targets, absorption, backscattering and transmission for supported and unsupported thin films, implantation profiles, secondary electron emission and so on); to study the probabilistic laws of interaction of the individual electrons with the atoms (elastic and inelastic cross sections); to introduce the Monte Carlo method and its use for computing the macroscopic characteristics of the interaction processes. Each chapter compares theory, simulations and experimental data. ... Read more

Book Description

Electron Momentum Spectroscopy measures the energy--momentum density of the electrons in atoms, molecules and solids by means of a kinematically-complete ionization reaction initiated by an electron beam. The construction of spectrometers and the acquisition and reduction of cross-section data are described in detail. The quantum theory of the reaction is explained and the experimental verification is given. It is shown how to extract quasiparticle orbitals, and coefficients describing electron correlations of the data. These quantities are derived from the many-body theory of the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solids. The relationship to less complete methods of investigating electronic structure is discussed.Examples are given of the determination of atomic and molecular orbitals and quantities relating them to the observed states of the residual ion. For amorphous, polycrystalline and crystalline solids and surfaces, examples show the energy--momentum density of valence electron bands, and effects due to electron diffraction and plasmon excitation. The book aims to give a complete account of electron momentum spectroscopy to date. Its significance is that it is a sensitive and experimentally-verifiable test of essentially every aspect of calculations of electronic structure. It is the only such probe available. ... Read more

Book Description

Research in carbon nanotubes has reached a horizon that is impacting a variety of fields, such as nanoelectronics, flat panel display, composite materials, sensors, nanodevices and novel instrumentation. The unique structures of the nanotubes result in numerous superior physical and chemical properties, such as the strongest mechanical strength and the highest thermal conductivity, room temperature ballistic quantum conductance, electromechanical coupling, and super surface functionality.Among the various analytical techniques, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) has played a key role in the discovery and characterization of carbon nanotubes. It may be claimed that carbon nanotubes might not have been discovered without using HRTEM. There is a great need of a book that addresses specifically the theory, techniques and application of electron microscopy and associated techniques for nanotube research. The objective of this book is to fill this gap.The potential of HRTEM is now well received in wide ranging communities such as materials science, physics, chemistry and electrical engineering. TEM is a powerful technique that is indispensable for characterizing nanomaterials, and Electron Microscopy of Nanotubes focuses on the applications of TEM in structural, electronic, and property characterization of carbon nanotubes and demonstrates how a comprehensive application of HRTEM and associated new techniques for nanotube research can be applied to a wide range of materials. The book contains 12 chapters and the authors for the chapters are the world prominent scientists specializing in the field. The contents of the book can be separated into three parts. The first part composed of chapters 1-6 is about the diffraction, imaging and spectroscopy of carbon-based nanotubes. The second part (chapters 7-9) describes the physical property nanomeasurements of carbon nanotubes based on in-situ TEM. The last part is about non-carbon based tubular structures and related structures. ... Read more

Book Description

. The 22nd International Free Electron Laser Conference and 7th FEL User Workshop were held August 13-18, 2000 at Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, USA. The conference and the workshop were hosted by Duke University's Free Electron laser (FEL) Laboratory. Following tradition, the FEL prize award was announced at the banquet. The year 2000 FEL prize was awarded to three scientists propelling the limits of high power FELs: Steven Benson, Eisuke Minehara and George Neill. The conference program was comprised of traditional oral sessions on First Lasing, FEL theory, storage ring FELs, linac and high power FELs, long wavelength FELs, SASE FELs, accelerator and FEL physics and technology, and new developments and proposals. Two sessions on accelerator and FEL physics and technology reflected the emphasis on the high quality of accelerators and components for modern FELs. The breadth of the applications was presented in the wo ... Read more
