Book Description

This third edition of the principal text on the finite element method for electrical engineers and electronics specialists presents the method in a mathematically undemanding style, accessible to undergraduates who may be encountering it for the first time. Like the earlier editions, it begins by deriving finite elements for the simplest familiar potential fields, and then formulates finite elements for a wide range of applied electromagnetics problems. These include wave propagation, diffusion, and static fields; open-boundary problems and nonlinear materials; axisymmetric, planar and fully three-dimensional geometries; and scalar and vector fields. A wide selection of demonstration programs allows the reader to follow the practical use of the methods. Besides providing all that is needed for the beginning undergraduate student, this textbook is also a valuable reference text for professional engineers and research students. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Explosives Identification Guide
I have taught scores of classes over the years in basic munition recognition and bomb threat and search procedures. One of the problems has always been finding good, basic instruction materials for teaching PDs,FDs, Schools, Hospitals, etc.Mike Pickett has filled the void. While toosimple for the experienced bomb tech, this book covers the basics very wellfor the novice, especially when used in conjunction with the video series. The photos could be larger, but are clear, numerous, and well colored.Iwould consider these materials a valuable tool for any emergency responsetraining section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explosive Identification Guide
Mike Pickett has written a book that should be in the hands of every First Responder. The book not only gives clear guidelines on what to do when responding to bomb threat calls, it also has good color pictures of some of the different explosives that maybe encountered. This book does anexcellent job of introducing First Responders to explosives on an awarenesslevel. It will get the reader thinking about safety and how little theaverage person knows about explosives and handling them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must addition to all professional departments arsenals.
As a professional firefighter tasked to teach our top Chiefs in awareness of explosives and terrorist treat preparedness the book was invaluable. In a concise manner Mr. Pickett shows what they look like, how to deal withthem and when to call for help. The book is designed to save lives, bothcivilians and responders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise primer on commonly-encountered explosives.
I recently read the brief (44 pages) Explosives Identification Guide and found it to be "to the point".This book is one of those a "first-responder" wishes was in the glove box when anexplosives-related call is encountered.Clear photographs, and concisedescriptions of both amateur and "professional" devices are easyto reference. The section on military explosives and simulators, and thecolor codes often used to identify these, is well done. The last half ofthe book is devoted to bomb threats, bomb searches, booby traps,"mail/letter bombs" and commonly-encountered triggeringmechanisms. All very "good stuff to know" if one does not wishto make an "ash" out of oneself.Good information on how to goabout preparing for bomb threats, and creating search teams within privatebusinesses is also presented. This book is a good place to start if youare not well versed on explosives.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic guide unlikely to satisfy security professionals
An elementary introduction to the topic that is likely to leave most readers hungry for more. A lot more. Discussion of explosives (appearance, use, characteristics, etc.) is basic to a point approaching banality.Identification section is based around 16 pages of full color pictures anddiagrams, 12 of which are devoted to military (mostly American) ordinance.Commercial explosives cover only 2 pages and an additional 2 pages isdevoted to US military color coding scheme for munitions. The thumbnailpictures will help you tell a stick of dynamite from a fragmentation bomb, but little beyond that. There are also some conspicious omissions, such asplastic explosives. Basic but useful information on bomb triggering devicesand handling threats and searches is also provided. ... Read more

Book Description

The Materials Handbook is an encyclopedic, A-to-Z organization of all types of materials, featuring their key performance properties, principal characteristics and applications in product design. Materials include ferrous and nonferrous metals, plastics, elastomers, ceramics, woods, composites, chemicals, minerals, textiles, fuels, foodstuffs and natural plant and animal substances --more than 13,000 in all. Properties are expressed in both U.S. customary and metric units and a thorough index eases finding details on each and every material.

Introduced in 1929 and often known simply as "Brady's," this comprehensive, one-volume, 1244 page encyclopedia of materials is intended for executives, managers, supervisors, engineers, and technicians, in engineering, manufacturing, marketing, purchasing and sales as well as educators and students.

Of the dozens of families of materials updated in the 15th Edition, the most extensive additions pertain to adhesives, activated carbon, aluminides, aluminum alloys, catalysts, ceramics, composites, fullerences, heat-transfer fluids, nanophase materials, nickel alloys, olefins, silicon nitride, stainless steels, thermoplastic elastomers, titanium alloys, tungsten alloys, valve alloys and welding and hard-facing alloys.

Also widely updated are acrylics, brazing alloys, chelants, biodegradable plastics, molybdenum alloys, plastic alloys, recyclate plastics, superalloys, supercritical fluids and tool steels.

New classes of materials added include aliphatic polyketones, carburizing secondary-hardening steels and polyarylene ether benzimidazoles. Carcinogens and materials likely to be cancer-causing in humans are listed for the first time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars reader
I have not read the most edition, but I have read an older one. I actually read it cover to cover. I find it fascinating to learn the history of various alloys and composites. Pretty much anything you want to know about any material is here. For anyone who has any interest in science, building, woodworking, sculpture, etc. this book will be extremely useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars A really broad listing of materials and their uses
This book is most helpful to those who have to find information about materials outside their area of expertise. The listing is extremely broad, and unlike other books, does not just focus on engineered or structural materials. The negative side of this breadth is the small amount of information on each material (sometimes only one or two paragraphs). This small amount of information, however, is usually enough to direct a search into a more productive direction. I have benefitted from this book on the last 4 jobs I have held. Definitely worth having. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Jack of all trades but master of none!
Within 800 pages, the authors have tried to include everything from basic structural equilibrium to finite element method. The effect is obvious, it has touched all topics superficially without any details. It has finished structural dynamics in one chapter and finite elements in two chapters! Examples lack details and jumps steps and are too complex to comprehend. Moreover it contains numerous printing mistakes. Theories are too obscure to follow. In overall, not a good book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars 3rd Edition improves set -- in wide use by students/teachers
We have other Gale books in our Library but the Encyclopedia of Science is the most used.As other reviews point out, the cross reference system is not very helpful and words set in bold seem to be used as suggestions for further reading whether or not the further reading really relates to the topic. All in all, the third edition is still a strong addition to our library. The new editors for the third edition have corrected MANY errors found in prior editions and they have added a good deal more content of interest to our students. Despite some format flaws the set is very useful to a wide range of students and teachers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not worth $450
Fortunately, I got it at a library sale for a fraction of that price.

The major pro: it's a good series of books for basic reference.

Major con #1: it's badly edited; there are many pages where there are chemical formulas that are misprinted, typos in headers, etc. I can only imagine if, say, Encyclopedia Britannica had this many errors.... [On the other hand, this seems to have been corrected for the third edition.]

Major con #2: the cross-reference system borders on the idiotic. The first time the title of *any* article appears, it is boldfaced, even if the context is essentially irrelevant.

Major con #3: it has a lot of depth in what it covers, but it isn't useful for reference on "deep" topics (e.g., if you want to know about optics, this book is good; if you want to learn about Fermi-Dirac statistics, go elsewhere).

All in all, if you can get this really cheap, try it. If not, though, you might be better off buying, say, several volumes of the Cambridge Encyclopedia series: you'd get more depth for the same amount of money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful as a general reference
This book is bargain-priced, but there are better "how to's" out there for beginners. It is a good reference book for the money, and full of useful general information. As an additional resource for your study, it has something to offer; but it's more of an "extra".

4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource, but not the best starting point
I bought /The Complete Idiot's Guide to Drawing/ on a whim, because it had lots of illustrations and a wide variety of topics contained within. I'm not at all disappointed with the book, but I feel I should warn potential buyers that this is not necessarily the best book to start with.

The authors start out with basic drawing theory, left brain vs. right brain, etc. and a few exercises to help you understand how best to approach drawing in general. They move on to talk about different types of paper, pencils, the picture plane, viewfinder, and other tools for drawing - very useful and well thought out information. Then the book jumps into various ideas for what to draw, what perspectives to try, etc.

If you're thinking it sounds like something has been left out, you're right. While /Idiot's Guide to Drawing/ covers a lot of tools and drawing ideas, it doesn't offer much in the way of exercises or practical advice for actually _drawing_. So while you may be inspired by, say, the section on still life drawings, you will find very little in the way to help you practice.

So what it comes down to is this: if you've dabbled a bit in drawing and aren't afraid of experimentation, this is an excellent book. Lots of good stuff in here, and great ideas for where you might want to point your creativity. But as I said, there aren't very many guided exercises in the book to help you explore the concepts you see and get any decent amount of feedback. Some would argue that lots of little exercises are silly or pointless, but I think they can be great confidence builders for those of us who tend to be overly critical of our own artwork... Or those of us who expect far too much from ourselves early on.

I highly recommend this book - but with a strong suggestion that you start with one or two more basic drawing books (like /Drawing for Dummies/), unless you want to do a great deal of experimentation on your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for adult beginners
Most drawing books either get too advanced early or are written for young kids. This one contains useful exercises in every chapter at a pace that isn't boring but can be followed. This is the fourth drawing book I've started and the only one I've stuck with. By chapter 8 (or 12 at the latest) your drawings will no longer belong on the refrigerator door. Good luck to all the other adult beginners out there!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I went from stick people to...
Well...stick people with depth! But seriously, I always though I had a drawing impairment gene but even after spending a few minutes with this book and the excellent ideas and advice on how to "see" objects I could actually sit down and do a drawing of my hand that looked dimensional. I am really amazed by the results so far and can certainly recommend it to those who want to have some fun and try a little drawing beyond stick people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a Complete Guide for Complete Idiot's
What a great book! Thoroughly addresses every aspect of drawing for the complete beginner with plenty of room to grow for all levels. It is excellent in the way it addresses the issue of training oneself to see skillfully in order to draw skillfully. In the absence of that information most "complete idiot's" won't even begin, but once convinced most have the confidence to try...with exciting results. This book presents a very convincing case. The book addresses almost every imaginable area of interest to an aspiring artist. Great for classroom teachers, homeschoolers and others who would like to pass on their love of drawing in an organized fashion. Top notch! ... Read more
