5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference tool
I really like this book! I bought the 4th edition (1956) at a used book store and was anxious to get the latest version. I purchased it in 2001 when it came out, and have been very pleased with it. I would recommend this book to anyone involved in electronics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best electrical engineering reference ever published
This is hands down the best reference book ever published for electrical/electronics/communications engineers. There is an abundance of articles on virtually any topic you can think of. This reference book is not written for the mathematical engineer who needs reference books loaded with tables and equations. This is a reference book for the rest of us engineers who need to learn the basics of a particular technology without having to re-learn engineering mathematics. This book is an absolute must for every electrical engineer. Once you get the book, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Overall Review of Fiber Optics
I purchased this book, "Introduction to Fiber Optics" by Crisp and "Understanding Fiber Optics" by Hecht to get up to speed on the technology. I work in finance, and am not an engineer. I found this book to be the most clear of the three, and by far the easiest to understand. This book had better diagrams and used better analogies to explain the technology than did the other two books.

The book was laid out logically, and did a good job of building on knowledge explained in previous chapters. There were one page summaries at the tale of each chapter, which were helpful in allowing you to either skip or skim the text. The glossary at the end of the book was especially useful, as was the end chapter on future trends within the industry. The book was a quick read, and once I had finished it I felt comfortable engaging in a discussion with people much more accomplished in the field than myself. ... Read more

Book Description

Lasers continue to be an amazingly robust field of activity.Anyone seeking a photon source is now confronted with an enormous number of possible lasers and laser wavelengths to choose from, but no single, comprehensive source to help them make that choice. The Handbook of Lasers provides an authoritative compilation of lasers, their properties, and original references in a readily accessible form. Organized by lasing media-solids, liquids, and gases-each section is subdivided into distinct laser types. Each type carries a brief description, followed by tables listing the lasing element or medium, host, lasing transition and wavelength, operating properties, primary literature citations, and, for broadband lasers, reported tuning ranges. The importance and value of the Handbook of Lasers cannot be overstated. Serving as both an archive and as an indicator of emerging trends, it reflects the state of knowledge and development in the field, provides a rapid means of obtaining reference data, and offers a pathway to the literature. It contains data useful for comparison with predictions and for developing models of processes, and may reveal fundamental inconsistencies or conflicts in the data. ... Read more

Book Description

Presents an evolutionary theory of technological change based on recent scholarship in the history of technology and on relevant material drawn from economic history and anthropology.Challenges the popular notion that technological advances arise from the efforts of a few heroic individuals who produce a series of revolutionary inventions that owe little or nothing to the technological past. Therefore, the book's argument is shaped by analogies drawn selectively from the theory of organic evolution, and not from the theory and practice of political revolution.Three themes appear, with variations, throughout the study. The first is diversity: an acknowledgment of the vast numbers of different kinds of made things (artifacts) that long have been available to humanity. The second theme is necessity: the mistaken belief that humans are driven to invent new artifacts in order to meet basic biological needs such as food, shelter, and defense. And the third theme is technological evolution: an organic analogy that explains both the emergence of the novel artifacts and their subsequent selection by society for incorporation into its material life without invoking either biological necessity or technological process. ... Book Description

This book covers an important and frequently overlooked area of welding - the repair of molds, tools and dies. Because two rather different trades overlap in this process - welding and tool making, the materials and techniques involved have tended to be obscured. For many years, toolmakers and tool users have had to rely on the small number of specialist welders who do understand exactly what welding repair involves and have the skills to carry it out.

Understanding the technical side of tool steels is frequently a problem for welders and understanding the practical side of welding can be a problem for machinists. This book has been written so that specialists from both sides can get to grips with the techniques and procedures involved.

Key Features:

- Wonderfully illustrated with diagrams that explain key points

- Exhaustive reference of steels in the first appendix (48 pages)

- "Reading it is like being taught to weld molds, tools and dies by a friend who is highly experienced in this trade." (Rocky Huber in his review)

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for the first draft!
I think it has the makings of a good handbook. However, I think the author should have had it reviewed by his RF colleagues. Being no RF expert, I was able to pick out several obvious mistakes. A few gems: Pg. 64, "Velocity factor (v) of 0.80, which means that the wave propagates along the line at 8 - 10 the speed of light". Pg 284, Hot S22 Methods, Lists all the S parameter formulas but leaves out S22.

Several times in the book, Joseph Carr tries to point out the significance of the Third-order intercept point with variations of the same graph along with variations of the same description. I would rather have settled for one in depth explanation. By the way Joseph, just how do you come up with the straight-line equation for the 3rd Order Response?

There were some good examples on plots using the Smith Charts. However, the graphs were barely legible.

5-0 out of 5 stars finebuss handbook for serious amateur radio operators
This is my first Joseph Carr book and I am totally hooked.
Being a new ham and with no EE background, I find this book to be very clear and easy to understand, even for newbies like myself.

To fully grasp the ideas inside I would guess being a ham
helps. With basic college EE background this book sure is
a breeze to read. This is also a good handbook in case you forget RF fundamentals.

I am looking forward to buying more Josheph books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
This book is a truly outstanding reference for the RF laboratory. (It is so good, that I'm thinking about buying a second copy just in case I ever lose the first) Although this book says it is a "technician's handbook", I think engineers and technicians alike will find this book invaluable. If you are a young engineer, this book will answer all of the "stupid" questions you're afraid to ask your more senior colleagues. If you are a senior engineer, this book will help you remember how to perform that obscure receiver benchmark measurement. You really can't lose with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair's Fair
The comment in the previous review about thermal radiation and heat radiation is fair enough, but I feel the reviewer is being unfair in other respects. The reason why there is no "See.." in the main text is because there is a very good index at the back! For instance under Carbon in the index, there is a page reference to radiocarbon dating. OK, there is no mention of carbon dating, so you would have to see radiocarbon dating, but you only have to scan a few lines of the index under the main entry on Carbon to find it. The comment about atomic energy is (unintentionally) misleading. Sure, the entry on atomic energy is very short, but there is a fair-sized entry on nuclear power and there is a cross-reference from atomic energy. Although the entry on nuclear energy is rather shorter than the two entries on oil and gas exploitation (a more relevant comparision than black pepper), it is backed up another fair-sized entry on nuclear reactors. I do think McGraw-Hill have made a decent effort to create an affordable science encyclopedia. (This refers to the 3rd edition, but I imagine the 4th edition is very similar).

4-0 out of 5 stars A great deal of info, poorly organized, wrong proportions
This book contains an enormous amount of information. However, there are two major problems. 1. It is often hard to find what you are looking for if you aren't using the same terminology they are. For instance, I looked for "Carbon dating", and it isn't listed - either in the text or the index. It is under "radiocarbon dating". There is no "carbon dating - see radiocarbon dating". I looked for "thermal radiation" and it wasn't there. It was under "heat radiation", again with no "see ...". In fact, there are no "see ..." anywhere. 2. The book claims that the material is given space according to its importance. "Atomic energy" gets 6 lines (2 sentences). I flipped to a random page, and "black pepper" gets more than twice as many lines, and "blackberry" gets 3 times as many lines. ... Read more
