Book Description

Pro/ENGINEER Solutions Advanced Techniques and Workarounds introduces senior design engineers and systems managers to success-proven techniques and workarounds for solving common and not-so-common engineering design challenges. In writing this book, the authors were guided by two principal objectives:-To provide Pro/ENGINEER Solutions users with proven advanced techniques andworkarounds that typically come, if at all, from years of experience.-To explore the fundamentals of good design practice in the context of advanceddesign technique, a critical yet under-documented aspect of parametric design. Unlike other "tips" books, this volume focuses on presenting techniques within the context of the parametric design capabilities and functionality of Pro/ENGINEER Solutions. The result is a book that will enable readers to make maximum use of their Pro/ENGINEER software, save time and reduce costs. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of advanced techniques
This book is OK if you are a Pro/e user with moderate experience. It explains about start parts - which I've found to be lacking in all the proe users I've met for exaample. Also the assembly techniques are ok. I would take exception to the book being aimed at advanced users. Anyone who has used proe extensively will find this book unfulfilling. Also it contains little or no reference to sheetmetal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a good Pro E book
I have bought about 4 books now on Pro/E. First two were introductory and that was fine because i was just starting to learn Pro/E. The other two were junk. However, this book is great. The book is definetly designed for a user who has already covered the basics. If your just learning, start with some basic tutorial books and then get this one. Shows some real good stuff and well laid out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Techniques for today
I felt this book was well written and easy to understand. We all know how boring technical literature can be and how difficult some examples are to follow. This book gives clear step-by-step direction that is straight to the point and delivers a message of not only advanced techniques, but also of proper modeling and design fundamentals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written & helpful
And I thought I knew Pro/E! A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the somewhat experienced Pro/E user
This book presents several excellent tips to get the most out of your Pro/Engineer experience. It has several well laid out sections on everything from creating start parts to setting up drawings to doing simple surfacing. It is well written but does assume a decent working knowledge of Pro/E. It covers such topics as correct assembly techniques, the new intent manager, patterns, sweeps, and skeleton models. The book is an excellent source beyond what is taught in the basic Pro/Engineer courses currently offered. It is really a must have as far as I'm concerned. Well worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best construction dictionary
This is one of the best construction dictionaries on the market. It has everything from the basics for newcomers (sometimes office staff who don't know the business real well) and correct spellings for those who have been around the business for a long time. The CD-ROM search capability is a real time saver too. Huge number of construction terms covered. It has helped my business sound as good on paper as we look on the job.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic, But Easy To Read
I work in the construction industry as a secretary and I bought the Construction Dictionary for my desk so I could look up some of the more obscure words when I type letters and proposals. This dicitionary is really easy to read but the words are too basic. It would be a good dictionary for someone new to the business but if you need a more diverse set of words this is not the dictionary for you. It's priced right for the beginner. ... Read more

Book Description

Well-planned, properly scheduled, and effectively communicated jobs accomplish more work, more efficiently, and at a lower cost. Maintenance Planning, Scheduling and Coordination focuses on and deals specifically with the preparatory tasks that lead to effective utilization and application of maintenance resources. It is a vital training document for planners, an educational document for those to whom planners are responsible, and a valuable guide for those who interface with the planning and scheduling function and are dependent upon the many contributions of planning and scheduling operational excellence.

Sure to aid organizations that pursue "Maintenance Excellence," this useful guide covers the basics commonly contained within world-class programs for effective execution of maintenance work: planning, parts acquisition, work measurement, coordination and scheduling. It addresses maintenance management, performance and control. And it clarifies the scope, responsibilities and contributions of the Planner/Scheduler function and the support of other functions to Job Preparation, Execution, and Completion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn How to Manage Maintenance from a Real Pro
Maintenance is one of the, if not the, most difficult functions to manage and control in industry. Left alone, maintenance tends toward chaos: fighting fires, too busy for PM, repeat failures, with senior management often unappreciative and non-supportive. Nevertheless, without good maintenance, industry can't run. How does one move from chaos to Control?

Mr. Nyman has written the definitive how-to on this subject, and no Plant Engineer or Maintenance Manager should be without this book in his library. If you will not just read, but absorb, the contents of this book for Mr. Nyman's insights, and follow his prescription for planning and scheduling, you will make the move to Control, and make your life, and your job, much easier.

This book gives detailed explanations of the Maintenance Planning function, including both Planner and Supervisor roles, with specifics on the process of how to scope out a job, determine material requirements, coordinate multiple craft groups, estimate time requirements, and then to effectively schedule planned jobs.

The book also includes appropriate metrics for measuring maintenance performance, Planner as well as Supervisor - a topic that is especially important since maintenance is mostly about cost avoidance, which itself is almost impossible to measure.

This book is well-written, concise, and based on real-world experience from a real pro. I recommend it heartily. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
If you are a professional Product Designer, an Engineer or an Architect this book will be a very good source of Anthropometric data. It is recommended by leading ergonomics authors and widely used in Universities and research institutes. The problem with Anthropometric data is not finding it but how to use it, this books bridges the gap that exists between theory and practice. It is an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A trusted resource
One of the best handbooks for ergonomic guidelines and anthropometric data. A thoughtful and well researched volume that I have used repeatedly in my industrial design career. Pheasant has created a compendium of data that designers can trust. The anthropometric data compiled for different populations is both relevant to today's multinational product markets and responsible in that aggregation of individual studies into a world-wide population anthropometry database is inherently inaccurate.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
This book is quiet information in regards to being specific about the parts of the body that they are refering to, for human factors sake. However, it completely excludes human scale and the dimensions ranging from infant to the adult male. There are no illustrations at all for easy reference and if you don't mind converting, everything is metric(it was published in Britian). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Science and Technology by James Trefil
This work is an important scientific achievement written in
simple English. Terms and concepts pertaining to classical
biology, evolution, molecular biology, modern physics and
even Astronomy are presented simply. For instance, lipids
are depicted as efficient repositories of energy. The DNA and
RNA are explained for the layperson. Theories of the universe
are set forth. For instance, some believe that the universe
(although expanding) is fundamentally flat. This work would
be a perfect reference guide for science students. It is well
worth the price of admission.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in every way; the best of its class
The best science & technology encyclopedia of its class (affordable desktop size of less than 1000 pages). Articles are lengthy and meaty. Well indexed and well illustrated; excellent cross-indexing indicating pre- and post- requisite articles. Content of articles is very up to date and just right regarding level of sophistication for the intelligent lay public: not watered down yet not too difficult. Articles are interesting and thought provoking, taking the reader beyond mere comprehension of empirical scientific facts toward deeper understanding and meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing reference!
Whether you are a serious student of science and/or technology, or just posess a casual interest in the broad spectrum of the two subjects, this book is as slick as they get. It's packed with tons of useful information from the inner workings of computers, to the amazing physics behind our universe. It's beautifully organized (each entry points you to what item in the book you should read before and after the current one), it's filled with excellent color illustrations and photos, and it never gets boring browsing the 1000+ entries. Dinosaurs, CD-ROM drives, radiology, astronomy, great people of science, great inventions, and on and on. This book is highly reccomended, and serves up information that could have easily been broken up into multiple books. A must buy. ... Read more

A culmination of 15 years of research, teaching, and consulting, The Complete Guide to Predictive and Preventive Maintenance shares the best practices, mistakes, victories, and essential steps for success which the author has gleaned from working with countless organizations. Unlike other books that only focus on the engineering issues (task lists) or management issues (CMMS), this in-depth resource is the first to give true emphasize to the four aspects of success in preventive maintenance systems-- engineering, management, economic, and psychological. This in turn will enable readers to have a balanced view and understanding of what is happening in their organizations. Blending concrete actionable steps and structures with the theory behind the steps, The Complete Guide to Predictive and Preventive Maintenance is sure to be valuable to maintenance directors, maintenance managers, maintenance engineers, planners, maintenance supervisors, PM group leaders, and PM mechanics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction
I am half-way through this book and realize that I have used Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) for years. This was the approach we used because of HAZOP studies. If you look at the methodology, they are the same. It is an excellent book for first-pass economics of preventive maintenance (PM). Through numerous examples, he shows when to PM, when you are spending too much for PM, and when to just run the damn thing 'til it breaks. As I said, it is a great introduction. I have picked up Doc Palmer's book and can see I would be lost without preparation.

If there are any short-comings, it is grammar and spelling. There are numerous typographical errors. Most engineers seem to have taken an-engineer's only english class in college. I found the errors troubling but the writing clear and concise.

A very good book for a refresher (as in my case), or an introduction.

4-0 out of 5 stars could use a good proofreadin'
The book explained the field well, but it referred, more than once, to a non-existant 'further reading' section. It also referred to a list of acronyms, supposedly containted within, which wasn't in the book either. It could really use an editor.

Diagrams were great, so were the pictures. It certainly did its job...but maybe not worth $60 plus.

3-0 out of 5 stars A SIMple Book
Definitely is not for RF Engineers, his explanations are basic and short. It seems like a summary of newspapers and magazines condensed in a Book (explained in layman terms). I Don't recomend it if you want an initial approach to the GSM Access technology, and you are experienced in CDMA or IS-136 (Keep away from it). Don't even think about an Air Interface explanation or high level approach of things.

1-0 out of 5 stars GSM Made SIMply Ridiculous
To any reader who wants to know something about GSM (and wants to find accurate, clear, concise information), LOOK TO ANOTHER SOURCE OF MATERIAL. I found this book to be inaccurate, confusing, misguided and insulting. A total waste of money, time and trees.

1-0 out of 5 stars Simply too simple ...
Even though enjoyable to read, it does not get real insight on the topics of ineterest

3-0 out of 5 stars Take it for what it is
I agree with those that say this book is not technical. From what I read it was not intended to be. It speaks in SIMPLE terms to explain GSM to sales people and other non technical users.

I agree also agree that the book is not for those that have a lot of eperience with other ceullar technologies.

Take this book for what it is...an introduction for beginners and non technical people. If that is th spirit in which the book is purchased it is a great fit.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is the worst technical book I have ever read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Forestry Handbook: Must-have resource for foresters
The Forestry Handbook contains a wealth of information for foresters and other natural resource managers. It's not a book that you read from start to finish (even discounting the 1,335 page length). Rather, it is a superb reference book. I use the Handbook frequently, and have a copy both at work and at home.

The Handbook is broken into 25 sections that include Ecology, Silviculture, Geology and Soils, Genetics, Fire Management, Insects and Diseases, Inventory, Measurements, and Logging. In addition to these forestry-related sections are those on Fish and Wildlife Management, Range Management, Watershed Management, and Remote Sensing. The Handbook also includes sections on Safety, People Management, and Communications.

Most sections have multiple authors, and these authors represent government, academia, and industry. Authors are from all regions of the country.

The strengh of the Handbook is that it covers a varity of forestry and natural resource topics, and does so very well. As you would expect, it relies heavily on figures and graphs, and these are appropriately used and of good quality. The sheer range of topics limits somewhat the depth of each topic. However, no other forestry text approaches the overall utility of the Handbook.

This 2nd Edition of the Handbook was edited for the Society of American Foresters and published in 1984. I hope that a 3rd Edition is in the near future. Technological advdances alone, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GPS, and related technologies indicate that an update is needed. Topics such as Best Management Practices (BMPs) and forest certification, now part of our everyday language in forestry, are absent from the 1984 Handbook.

The price tag may seem steep to foresters. However, considering the bredth of material and quality of the text, it is a text worth having if you are serious about forestry.

Book Description

The Genesis of Flight illustrates one of the most prestigious aeronautical history collections in existence, covering the history of man's dream of flight from antiquity to the advent of powered flight at the beginning of the 20th century. The items included are drawn from more than 20,000 objects that vividly reflect both humanity's vision and its fulfillment.

Five-thousand-year-old seals carved from semiprecious stones and used to inscribe clay tablets record the earliest conception of flight. Among the collection's thousands of books are priceless volumes printed before 1501. Many, such as Robert Hooke's Philosophical Collections (1682), are serious, scientific studies of the possibility of flight. Others are about imaginary voyages into space and to other worlds, including Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso (1547), Cyrano de Bergerac's account of a voyage to the moon first published in 1650, and, of course, the 19th-century classics of Jules Verne. More than 2,000 prints, portraits, engravings, etchings, woodcuts, and lithographs comprise a unique and arresting pictorial history of aeronautics. Important letters written by pioneers of flight-Montgolfier, Blanchard, Lunardi, Lilienthal, Count von Zeppelin, Santos-Dumont, Langley, and the Wright brothers-are to be found among the collection's manuscript holdings. There are also rare commemorative medallions, sheet music, posters, dime novels, postcards and postage stamps, early flight manuals, catalogues of aircraft equipment, match boxes, and children's games and toys-all recording, in one way or another, humanity's aspirations to fly.

The collection was assembled by Richard Gimbel (1898-1970), who began collecting while serving with the 8th U.S. Army Air Force in England during World War II, and continued after becoming curator of aeronautical literature at Yale University. The collection was donated to the United States Air Force Academy upon his death.

The contributors include Tom D. Crouch, National Air and Space Museum; Clive Hart, University of Essex, England; Paul Maravelas, University of Minnesota Libraries; Ellen Morris, University of Pennsylvania; Dominick A. Pisano, National Air and Space Museum; Holly Pittman, University of Pennsylvania; and Edward Rochette, American Numismatics Association. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gimbel Collection
Widespread among mankind is the capacity to dream, to imagine, to visualize what might be and what could come to pass. And so it has been, manifestly, with dreams of flight.Since humans first took time to notice birds, bats and flying insects, man's mind has formed the wish to emulate them - to be able to fly - to rise above earth's surface, moving freely in air and space. Visual artists, painters, sculptors, and writers, have, over the centuries, depicted these dreams. From times many centuries before the mythology of Daedalus and Icarus have come historical depictions of imagined flights by man. A monumental collection of such depictions was assembled by the late Colonel Richard Gimbel.Scion of the founding family of Gimbel's Department Stores, Richard was a man of diverse interests, notable talents and tastes, and wealth sufficient to enable him to be a collector with uniquely wide sweep. Serving as a Colonel in the Eighth Air Force Service Command in England in 1943, Richard Gimbel became fascinated with those items which showed man's historic interest in personal flight. For the next thirty years of his life, he devoted increasing talents and capability to the collection of rare items related to man's flight.Retired Colonel Gimbel spent twenty years at Yale University as Professor of Air Science and Trustee of the Library. At the time of his death his personal collection of aeronautica, which he never catalogued, numbered over one hundred thousand items. Due in large part to the interest and influence of Charles Lindbergh, the Gimbel collection was willed to the Library of the United States Air Force Academy. There it resides today, an intellectual landmark, part of the professional education of Academy cadets, and, in the care of a permanent archivist, available to scholars and the public. This current book, The Genesis of Flight, is a fortunate collaboration of the Friends of the United States Air Force Academy Library, and The University of Washington Press.Seven highly-qualified contributors have given us the text of this superb volume on the Gimbel collection.Illustrations of some 300 of the collection's many items are shown in this edition. The writing, editing, printing, and binding of this book are all excellent. Cost of the book might be viewed as a bit pricey, particularly when compared to the prices of some of the content free drivel available in today's publishing world. But I view my new copy as one of the greatest bargains I have had the good sense to purchase lately. The purchase price of The Genesis of Flight covers not only the magnificent printed volume.Nested in the back interior cover is a compact disc, playable on your PC or MAC, This disc, with audio and video, provides a magnificent companion to the book.It gives the reader/viewer an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in the Gimbel collection in all its fascination and informative value. I commend this book to anyone interested in aerospace, aeronautics, flight, art, or history. This is a great addition to the world's printed knowledge. ... Read more
