2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the price.
Terrible images: is this a book or a newspaper?!
A lot of info about metal processes but that is it. It has some of plastics, a bit of rubber (like one page or something), and nothing else. Come on Jim, Industrial Design is much more than metal or plastic!

Guido.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good as a quick reference
I disagree with the reviewer from TX. The book is written using terminology that any industrial designer should be familiar with. It would make a good textbook for design students because it gives an overview of many materials & processes. It also has charts and diagrams that make the information easy to digest. My criticisms would be that it could use more examples of final products and detailed descriptions of the materials & processes used, ie case studies. For the price, it is a thin book and could easily include a case study section. I would also like more elaboration in the "charateristics, uses and properties" sections for each material with common pitfalls to avoid.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I expected more from this book. I wanted a book that was written for designers but instead got a book written in engineer-speak with a nice cover (although for the price a hard cover would have been nice). the illustrations look like they are straight out of any other engineering text. "A" for concept, "D" for content. Having said that, there aren't a lot of books to choose from for ID - this may be the best - ... .

4-0 out of 5 stars Good choice for industrial design student
This book is intended to give an overview in simple and visual terms, serve as a guide and introduction to this rather complex manufacturing field. Designer must have a good understanding of all manufacturing processes abailable, in order to have confidence that the proposed manufacturing processes is the most economical and appropriate. So, the book tried to give an overview of all materials and manufacturing methods, in order to help students to visualize and develop forms that ultimately will be manufactured.

The contests consist of metal materials, metal forming, metal cutting, metal joining, appearance finishing and coating, plastic materials, resin forming processes, machining parts, joining plastics, finishing plastics, rubbers and elastomers, natural engineering materials, composites, and rapid prototyping. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A good book, but...
I am a Biochemistry/Molecular Biology PhD who has made transition into one of the "alternative careers".Three years before I made the transition, I bought and read the book.

I found the book generally helpful. But at the time when I was struggling with my career decision, I found the book inadequate. The book tried to cover too many areas of professions. It includes not only life scientists, but also medical doctors, accountants, engineers, psychologists, and even English-major...These people, like me, all want to make career changes. This book is too general. It does not give me enough information for my particular case.In reality, there are "alternative career" opportunities which are open to an English major but closed to a Biochemist.

best for professionals and pre-professionals...parachute for scientists, doctors, engineers, and lawyers. really on target

Book Description

Pro/ENGINEER Solutions and Plastic Design guides readers through practical examples of plastic components modeling, teaching robust modeling techniques and providing inside tips to delivering a manufacturable design. Using a series of exercises and tutorials, readers will learn to identify and model part surfaces for injection molding, split design assemblies into components, and use analytical tools to evaluate the quality of the finished design project. Because Pro/ENGINEER CAD models designed for manufacture in plastic are less intuitive to work with, the overall philosophy of how to approach such a part design as presented in this book differs sharply from the basic building block construction techniques in other Pro/ENGINEER tutorials. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it.
If you want to learn how to design plastic parts on Pro E this book has absolutly no interest... It shows beautiful models but figure out yourself how to create them on Pro E. Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Just not much here
I am in between a novice/intermediate user level in Pro E 20. I have a small background in plastics injection molding but mostly silicone molding. This book spends most of the time explaining basic injection molding design (things like draft, runners, core/cavity). But very the discussion of these features is very basic and mostely antedotal. You could learn just about everything covered in this book in about 1 hour talking with a mold designer and probably alot more with the mold designer. If you have been commissioned to start designing molds then you will need a hell of alot more then this book offers you. The final section of the book has work excercises designing parts. But it just tells you to design some parts on Pro E, NOT how to use Pro E to design the parts. I have done several tutorials that cover general features of Pro E but was looking for something that gave some new features in Pro E and HOW tos on those features. Not in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for those new to the design of molded plastic parts.
Excellent book for people new to the design of injection molded parts. A good introductory text with an overview of some common processes used to manufacture molded plastic components. If you are new to the design of molded plastic components and are a novice or intermediate Pro/E user then this book will serve you well. Basic design considerations are presented along with techniques on how to capture them using Pro/E. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars modern welding "paperback" version
I purchased Modern Welding- the "paperback" version, used off of Amazon, however, when it arrived today I was dismayed to discover that the "paperback" edtion is a Lab Manual, that is, a quiz that accompanies the text book. Well, I am out some cash and back at square one- I still need a copy of Modern Welding, too bad Amzon did not state that there is no Paperback version of Modern Welding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to be a better welder? You NEED this book.
Get started SAFELY in any type of welding: Gas, Mig, Tig, or Stick. Use this book to fill in any gaps in basic formal training (such as from a local Community College, which is highly recommended for learning proper techniques) or knowledge. The book is filled with outstandingly detailed illustrations, tables and pictures that cover the different machine particulars, proper set ups and hand movement techniques that will allow anyone to produce consistantly strong welds on just about any material. Check it out: this book has so much information, and is layed out in such a way that it is easily worth twice the asking price!

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Welding
As advertised, this book is comprehensive in scope - even the most esoteric forms of industrial welding are covered. It is a good reference text, but probably not a good beginner's how-to book. As a welding amateur, this book expanded my knowledge of the subject tremendously. The text is oriented more towards commercial and industrial welding that amateur welding.

One subject that is not covered that would have been most helpful is the electrical needs of welding equipment and how they are or can be met.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
The book is unpractical for the working engineer and the mathematics is simplified calculus which is not understandable to the average practicing engineer, but seems to be in favor of academic types. 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was disappointed with this book. While full of detailed figures and schematics, the book is hodge-podge of information with very little logical flow. It jumps from 100,000 feet into the treetops with no explanation. The author peppers the book with his insights but without any context and background leaving the reader confused. As well, the book is dated given recent advancements in motor control technology.

Overall I found this to be an excellent book. I enjoyed every page, and in particular tracing out circuit operations of the various schematics. I thought the diversity of circuits was great.

Nowhere in the title did I see "Basics of" or Fundementals of". This is not a book for the novice. The reader must have a good understanding of AC and DC motors, and solid state theory, circiuts, and devices.

I found the concatenation of induction motors, and the Kramer speed control system very interesting. I have many old industrial control books, but none shows these systems.

There are several errors, and examples of such are: Page 44, Para 3 is completely wrong. The proper way to reverse direction of compound motors is to reverse A1 and A2. Page 57, para 2 relates to this proper method. Fig. 5-9 Q102 shows a JFET- should be a UJT. Fig. 5-13 Q1 same thing. Fig. 5-10 has negative 250 VDC lines to emitters of Q532-Q536 and Q552-Q556 missing. Eliminate lead from motor to bottom of C541. Fig. 6-11 motor will never reverse with this scheme. Turning dial in opposite direction FWD biasis Q2 turning on Q1 which energizes RY2. RY1 drops out turning system off. Motor never runs CCW.

I have a comprehensive technical library, and one of my books is by this author entitled "Design and Operation of Regulated Power Supplies". It's an old book, and it's full of solid state circuits. I am indebted to authors like Mr Gottlieb, for it's their writings that enabled me to learn solid state electronics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Electric Motors and Control Techniques
The information in this book is best suited to a physicist with a background in motors. If you don't already have a solid understanding about motors, servos and motor control already, then don't buy this book! The author covers far too much information at a very high level, makes too many assumptions about the reader's knowledge, and does not explain anything in easy-to-understand terms.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overview with little depth
The book is good in giving a general (although a little dated) overview of motor types and control techniques. Unfortunately they are too special for a layman to understand and too general for a specialist to really do something with it. I have found the book a little disappointing, because it is assuming things without ever explaining them.

I had the impression, that the author had more interest in displaying the scope of his knowledge instead of helping someone else to get to the same level of understanding ... Read more
