5-0 out of 5 stars The best educational gift you can give.
This is an excellent gift to give to others. I give the cards individually when I write thank you letters or send words of encouragement. I also use them as an educational tool with high school and middle school student leaders. If you work with people or youth, buy a set of these cards.

2-0 out of 5 stars It is a Deck of Cards.
This is not a book. It is a deck of 52 playing cards. I'm incredibly organized, so I don't have a problem keeping them together but...how are you going to find this tiny box when you need it? And how much information can you fit on a card? Not much.

The ideas are ...so-so. Not very interesting. This is supposed to be for ADULTS, yet they give ideas for things like fingerpainting, playing with play doh, Pin the Tail on the Donkey and other kids games...I'm with my kids all day doing that stuff! When I'm with my friends, no thanks.

Because its a standard size deck of cards, there is very little room to write. So, they give you an idea but there are no instructions. If you aren't good at improvising and don't want to put a lot of thought into implementing the ideas here that you happen to like, don't bother because there is no help in this box for you! I have all the Amazon game books. This one I just don't care for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good advice!
These cards are filled with good ideas and reminders of what it takes to find the right person. It's easy to get into a rut but these cards have ideas on how to get out of the house more and hopefully put yourself in a situation where you'll meet someone. These cards are well worth the money to give yourself a boost especially if you've been out of the dating scene for awhile.

1-0 out of 5 stars A *COMPLETE* waste of money ... What a ripoff!
This was the worst waste of money I ever spent. All of the short, simple "tips" are self-explanatory; I can't even imagine anyone over the age of 9 not already knowing them. Unless you spend most of your spare time mugging people, I can't imagine that it would add anything to your life. I would very strongly suggest that you save your money and skip this one. YUCK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great informational book
It appears this another great card series which was just published. I'm glad I got mine right away. I wish it were in the form of a book instead of cards, but nevertheless, the cards are great. They illustrated, well written and easy to follow. They offers many tips on how to pamper yourself in ways I never even dreamed about. The best part is that they're all affordable. It covers everything from spoiling yourself with foods, applying home remedies to your body for sofe and silky skin and hair, to steam baths and pedicures. There's lots more. I thought the little cards were great. You don't need to be rich, famous, or spoiled to treat yourself to a little (or a lot) of pampering. These cards prove that. ... Read more

Book Description

The inventor of SKYY Vodka shares his five-step blueprint on how to turn good ideas into successful products. When the fuzz from his sweater was pulled off by a concrete wall he was leaning against, Maurice Kanbar had a brainstorm. Soon he had patented, produced, and successfully promoted the D-Fuzz-It Sweater Comb, and made his first fortune at the age of twenty-two. When Maurice's favorite after-dinner drink gave him a headache, lightning struck again. Thus was born the unique distilling system for SKYY Vodka, the fastest growing vodka of the decade in the U.S. In between came dozens of successful inventions, from multi-plex theatres to medical devices. In this engaging "master class," Kanbar's real world hits and misses illustrate the concrete steps every inventor must follow to successfully take his product to market. You don't have to be a MENSA member--although Maurice is--to make your dreams realities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of practical advice illustrated with real stories
This is an easy read, and it's hard to put it down.

His basic process is easily summed up: 1) Solve a Problem, 2) Prove Your Invention/Build a Prototype, 3) Protect Your Idea, 4)Manufacture or License?, 5) Market with a Twist. And, those are his 5 main chapters. He shows you how he has done this repeatedly. He's a serial inventor/business starter.

What I particularly liked was his detailed description of how he did "hands on" market research. He shows you how to prove out your invention early within the marketplace.

From an invention point of view, he works primarily from finding problems. He describes his personal experience in all the chapters. There is no college theory here.

I highly recommend this book for entrepreneurs and inventors. It's a fast read, but you'll probably come back and review it periodically.

John Dunbar

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to inventing
If you consider yourself an Inventor, or think you may want to become an Inventor, and you love listening to yarns about products and how they came to market, then this book is for you. Maurice Kanbar is a trained engineer and has many inventions to his credit. Many of his inventions are successful (36 patents) and some are household words. Some of Kanbar's inventions are not so successful and to his credit he airs his laundry willingly so that new inventors need not make similar mistakes.

It is hard to classify "Secrets from an Inventors Notebook". To begin with, the title might more aptly be called "Musings from my Diary" or "Did you hear the one about... ".. After reading only a small part of the book you are immediately struck with the quality that has made Maurice Kanbar successful in a wide range of endeavors, he is a first class promoter and his enthusiasm comes across clearly in the book. Like many good storytellers, sometimes you simply have to take the story for it's intended teaching point and not be too critical of the details. Buried in the prose are many bits of solid advice on developing and bringing a product to market.

Maurice's style is likeable and you find yourself wanting to sit down and have a beer with the author and chew the fat about inventing. That is both the charm and the pitfall of "Secrets from an Inventors Notebook". There are many anecdotal stories about how products were successfully brought to market or how they failed (both Maurice's and others). Some of these lessons are consolidated into Kanbar's Commandments for Inventors. Other lessons are in the form of good general advice; get a good patent lawyer, work on your prototype diligently before committing to production, and market your product heavily. What the book does not do is get into the gory details of how to do any of this. This is a "What To Do" book, not a "How To Do" book. If you have already done some studying about the business of inventing and are ready to dig in seriously, you may not find much in this book for you. There are only a couple of pictures in the whole book and no charts or numbers of any kind.

This book is light (5 chapters in 168 pages) and easy to read. The storytelling style should appeal to anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what is necessary for an entrepreneur to get a product to market. It might be right at home in an undergraduate business class studying entrepreneurship. There is an Appendix with a decent bibliography, references, and several sample legal forms that entrepreneur's might use. "Secrets form an Inventors Notebook" is a good lighthearted introduction to the world of the inventor and entrepreneur by someone who has been there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought on a whim, and...wow!!
I had no idea who Maurice Kanbar was when I picked up this book. I was browsing in my local bookstore, saw "Secrets..." on the shelf, thought it looked interesting, forked over my [money].

Kanbar says friends, co-workers, etc. have consistently badgered him over the years to write a book. I can see why. This guy is an amazing source of creativity and perseverance. Forget the "Inventors" title. Anyone with even a smidgen of entrepreneurial zeal can benefit from the chock-a-block common sense crammed into this small volume.

The range of this guy's impact is stunning. The innovations tumble forward, one chapter after another. Kanbar says it all stems from a simple principle - see something you don't understand, and ask how and why it happened. Then devise a solution that provides a real benefit and market it with a twist.

All the examples are compelling, but the SKYY Vodka tale - which Kanbar saves for the last chapter - brings everything together in a most impressive fashion. He lays it our very succintly:

The problem? He had headaches after drinking.

The reason? After study, scientists tell him that the distillation process leaves impurities, called 'congeners.'

Solution? A distillation process that eliminates the congeners.

The benefit? Drinking in moderation with less irratation.

The entire book reads just like that. Great takeaway lessons for anyone. Get this one on your bookshelf ASAP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical advice, but not dry like a martini.
Kanbar spills all his secrets about how to be successful at inventing, where 'inventing' means more than just coming up with a gadget idea. He goes into great detail about marketing, naming, patent rules, etc, in a personable style. Sometimes, I got tired of hearing him blow his own horn, or plug his products, but I forgive him. That is what he does for a living, and he can't stop. The back has useful legal forms, and many refs to useful books and web sites. My favorite part was about how you must look around you and see problems as opportunities. Thanks, Scott!

5-0 out of 5 stars From creating to profiting
With the huge profits Rich Dad and Millionaire Mind series are creating, authors seem to be more worried in leaving readers with an I-need-more-information feeling, rather than actually sharing their secrets. Kanbar's book, written allegedly for charity purposes, truly shares the secrets of his wealth. That is, the exact moment when a common person hits the jackpot and becomes a millionaire.
The book makes the patenting process feel more attainable if you're not an engineer or a scientist. And more importantly, gives you several pathways you can follow once you secure your idea, from entrepreneurship to licensing.
All in all, one of the most stimulating, grounded books I have reached in this not-give-them-all authors era. ... Read more

Book Description

Of the many areas in which statisticians and scientists must combine their knowledge, none is more important than the design and analysis of experiments. There is a direct relationship between the quality of experimental design and analysis and the validity of conclusions drawn from experimental results. Design and Analysis of Experiments is the first of two volumes that update Oscar Kempthorne's groundbreaking 1952 classic of the same name.

This first volume establishes both the philosophical basis for experimental design and a mathematical-statistical framework within which to discuss the subject. A sharp distinction is drawn between observation studies and the intervention studies that are the primary topic of this book. A thorough discussion of linear models provides the basic tools of analysis for intervention studies. At the heart of the book is a series of error-control designs based on fundamental design principles such as randomization, blocking, the Latin square principle, the split-unit principle, and the notion of factorial treatment structure. There are also discussions of response surface and mixture designs, and the construction of customized designs based on one or more fundamental principles.

This is the ultimate textbook for a first-year graduate course in experimental design. A thorough understanding of the material covered in this book will fully prepare students to grapple with the more complex technical material presented in advanced courses in experimental design.

The classic text now updated and expanded for the 1990s...

Book Description

A well-designed experiment is an efficient method for learning about the physical world, however since experiments in any setting cannot avoid random error, statistical methods are essential for their design and implementation, and for the analysis of results. In this book, the fundamentals of optimum experimental design theory are presented. In the first part, the advantages of a statistical approach to the design of experiments are discussed, and the ideas of models, least squares fitting, and optimum experimental designs are introduced. The second part presents a more detailed discussion of the general theory of optimum design and an evaluation of various criteria that may be appropriate for designing experiments. Specific experiments are detailed and algorithms for the construction of designs are given. Each chapter is a self-contained, illustrated with examples drawn from science and engineering. Little previous statistical knowledge is assumed, and the derivation of mathematical results has been avoided. This book should be of interest to everyone concerned with designing experiments that are practical, efficient, and accurate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!!!
This is perfect for anyone interested in how various products were developed, health aspects of chemistry, or the history of various chemical discoveries. As a high school science teacher I am always looking for anecdotes regarding various science topics. This is perfect!! Lots of fun!
Thanks Joe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and illuminating for the chemist and non-chemist alike
Dr. Schwarcz is well-known throughout Canada (and especially, the University of McGill in Montreal) as being the consummate chemistry lecturer. His courses are filled with anecdotes, demonstrations, and humour. He has translated his infectious interest in chemistry to the written word, and the result is a fascinating book that you will enjoy reading, and likely refer to again and again when someone asks, "I wonder why....?" As the title promises, the book is a series of short anecdotes about a variety of chemical subjects. For example, the titular "radar, hula hoops, and playful pigs" gives the connection between these three items (airborne radar, hula hoops, and pig playtoys are all made from the same polymer). The majority of the essays revolve around health, probably reflecting both the author's training (as a carbohydrate chemist) and society's bias.

Schwarcz has two underlying, scientific themes. Science in general, and chemistry in particular, is neither good nor evil - it's the context/use of chemistry that gives a moral distinction. Likewise, chemical effects are generally driven by amount - arsenic is not poisonous in low enough concentrations, while water is deadly under certain conditions (if inhaled, for example). The second point is to make the reader a skeptical consumer. He gives numerous examples of good science vs. bad science - a product trotting out "testimonials" is not evidence that it will work in all cases (or even in the majority of cases!). That's not to say the book gets bogged down in details. His writing style is sharp, witty, and concise. The book can be picked up and read from any point, and you'll still learn something interesting.

I am a chemist, and can assure the chemists considering this book that the science is accurate. It's not the standard sugar-coated fare that appears on television. Likewise, a non-scientist will be able to easily understand the material because Schwarcz never resorts to lingo without first explaining it (for "proof" I point to my mother, who was an English major in university and who enjoyed the parts of the book she's read). Therefore, this book can be recommended to the widest audience, and all will find it informative and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last: Chemistry for Humans!
I love this book! I can't wait to read the sequel! Dr. Schwarcz has a way of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, and making you actually care about chemistry. His secret is that instead of lecturing about chemistry for chemistry's sake, he uses chemistry to make sense of the nagging little questions of everyday life (Why is shampoo so foamy? Why does skunk smell come back the day after you wash it off your dog?). He also brings to light the people behind chemical discoveries, and has a knack for showing how their personal quirks led them to discoveries that changed the world. If you like chemistry, you will like this book. If you HATE chemistry (like I do) you will love this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Science for Non-Scientists
The sub-title says it right: "Digestible Commentaries." The writing style is informative, entertaining and always illuminating. The narratives on diet, in particular, are very applicable to daily life. He does an excellent job of debunking the myths of "chemical content" in our lives and consistently makes the point that "chemical" is not a dirty word! A great and easy read. ... Read more

Book Description

Many amateur astronomers make their own instruments, either because of financial considerations or because they are just interested. Amateur Telescope Making offers a variety of designs for telescopes, mounts and drives which are suitable for the home-constructor. The designs range from simple to advanced, but all are within the range of a moderately well-equipped home workshop. Thus each chapter begins with reasons for undertaking the project, then looks at theoretical consideration before finishing with practical instructions and advice. An indication is given as to the skills required for the various projects. Appendices list reputable sources of (mail order) materials and components. The telescopes and mounts range from "shoestring" (very cheap) instruments to specialist devices that are unavailable commercially. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
This is an edited book with different authors contributing an article each. Thus these is no coherency. It seems that the editor had asked each contributing author to just give an article about his or her telescope making experience. Thus all the chapters are separate entities without any cross-references (between chapters). Finally they do not go in any detail what so ever. It is more like a "1001 Project Book" which claims that (after reading the book) you can do every thing from repairing cars, TVs, VCR, DVDs to building an airplane, except that the book only devote half a page to all the 1001 projects. You just cannot make a telescope by reading this book (unless you already know how to make one).

BTW: you can find more information on the web than what this book delivers. I am just glad that I borrowed it from the library, and did not buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great telescope making book for anyone.......
We are an amateur astronomy loving family who got into making our own telescopes after getting involved in the Friday night telescope classes and lectures at the Chabot observatory in Oakland California back in the early 80's.

And being homeschoolers we were also big science fans and have always encouraged people to become as hands on science minded as possible. This books is a perfect example of hands on science at its best as well as a book that should put to rest the idea that only rich people own telescopes or that only people with science degrees use telescope.

The book is shy 300 pages and covers everything from Shoestring telescopes you can make, using items you have around the house as well as items you can find for free at carpet stores. Specialized telescopes is about building a high contrast planetary setup, as well as Rright camera. There is an excellent section on mounts. I would hope every library would own a copy of the book and believe that every homeschooling family should as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for ideas
Unlike conventional ATM books, this one does not cover basic work. Either use available optics for the simple stuff, or you will have to make stuff for the more advanced projects.

There are some excellent designs for DIY mounts and drives.

5-0 out of 5 stars As the S&T reviw says, "a worthy addition".
A marvellous little book which can be used as a manual and inspiring bed-time reading. Although some projects can be found on the web, the book version usually expands on these or is very different (and probably more permanent). The book's strength is that it has has selected projects which are easy to replicate and which complement each other. Its weakness is that there isn't more of it.

Book Description

This is a revised edition of a classic and highly regarded book, first published in 1981, describing the status of theory and experiment in general relativity. This book offers a comprehensive survey of the intensive research and testing of general relativity that has been conducted over the past three decades. As a foundation for this survey, the book first introduces the important principles of gravitation theory, developing the mathematical formalism that is necessary to carry out specific computations so that theoretical predictions can be compared with experimental findings. It provides an up-to-date survey of experimental results, not only for Einstein's "classical" tests, such as deflection of light and the perihelion of Mercury, but also for new solar-system tests, never envisioned by Einstein, that make use of the high-precision space and laboratory technologies of today. The book goes on to explore new arenas for testing gravitation theory in black holes, neutron stars, gravitational waves and cosmology. Included is a systematic account of the remarkable "binary pulsar" PSR 1913+16, which has yielded precise confirmation of the existence of gravitational waves. A new chapter has been added to cover recent important experimental tests, and the bibliography has been brought up to date. ... Read more

Book Description

This is a fun, hands-on guide to understanding the basic structure and chemistry of matter. Drawing on the Japanese art of paperfolding, the book provides rip-out patterns for 124 molecules, along with easy instructions for folding them into scale models, many of which are three-dimensional. The molecules progress from simple ones like methane to more exotic structures such as quartz and buckminsterfullerenes. Questions and discussions are included. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Origami
The word origami in the title is deceiving. I was hoping for unit or modular origami models. The only folding that you do is of models that must be cut out, folded and taped together. Maybe I can find a chemistry teacher that might be interested in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Science and Art Wrapped in One Package
This book is fun. There is a full range of origami skill levels covered. You can create all sorts of molecules and crystal formations from the simple to the infamous buckminster Fullerenes ("buckyballs"). There is information about each item covered in the book. If I could change anything about this book, it would be to have the origami pages colored. With that exception, I thought the book was a very good time.
