Book Description

Environmental chemistry has evolved into a discipline which is far more than a series of applications of chemistry to environmental problems. The complexity and diversity of environmental systems demands a corresponding variety in the group of researchers who call themselves environmental chemists. This unique volume reflects this diversity and provides an in-depth introduction to a wide variety of topics within environmental chemistry. It features state-of-the-art contributions from leading scientists who are actively involved in an extensive range of research areas within environmental chemistry. Written at a level accessible to general readers, this volume has been carefully edited for consistency of level and style, and is fully referenced and indexed. It is organized into sections describing fundamental work in the environmental chemistry of condensed-phase systems, studies in atmospheric chemistry, and chapters more directly related to field data. ... Book Description

This book is the first to detail the chemical changes that occur in deforming materials subjected to unequal compressions. While thermodynamics provides, at the macroscopic level, an excellent means of understanding and predicting the behavior of materials in equilibrium and non-equilibrium states, much less is understood about nonhydrostatic stress and interdiffusion at the chemical level.Little is known, for example, about the chemistry of a state resulting from a cylinder of deforming material being more strongly compressed along its length than radially, a state of non-equilibrium that remains no matter how ideal the cylinder's condition in other respects.M. Brian Bayly here provides the outline of a comprehensive approach to gaining a simplified and unified understanding of such phenomena. The author's perspective differs from those commonly found in the technical literature in that he emphasizes two little-used equations that allow for a description and clarification of viscous deformation at the chemical level.Written at a level that will be accessible to many non-specialists, this book requires only a fundamental understanding of elementary mathematics, the nonhydrostatic stress state, and chemical potential.Geochemists, petrologists, structural geologists, and materials scientists will find Chemical Change in Deforming Materials interesting and useful. ... Book Description

The Guiana Shield is an area of special importance, especially to those concerned with Precambrian geology because it provides a perspective on a part of Earth history not well represented elsewhere. For economic geologists, its mineral resource potential is just beginning to be understood. This overview of current knowledge will greatly help geologists already working in the area, draw attention to the need for mineral exploration research, and encourage the inclusion of the Shield in future Precambrian studies. ... Book Description

Most of the world's great volcanic massive suphide ore deposits, porphyry copper ores, and many of its richest gold veins occur in association with basalt-andesite-dactite-rhyolite laval suites that have erupted from ancient volcanic islands and their Precambrian equivalents. These volcanic arcs and their related aquatic-volcanic environments are now recognized as critical to an understanding of the evolution of the earth's crust and the origin of many important ore types. This book is concerned with the behavior of the 'ore elements'--copper, zinc, lead, cobalt, nickel, barium, and others--in young metamorphosed, volcanic arc lava suites, as these evolve from high-magnesium basalts to rhyolites. Using mostly the Pleistocene to recent lavas of the Solomon Islands younger volcanic suite, the author examines the patterns of abundance of these elements in rock constituents and describes the ways in which the metals may be enriched or impoverished in the residual melt as an arc lava series evolves from basalt to rhyolite. The book presents state-of-the-art information that will be indispensable to vulcanologists, geochemists, and mining geologists. ... Book Description

Carbon dioxide, bicarbonate ion, and carbonate ion comprise the most important acid-base system in natural waters, and the equilibria between them regulate the pH of seawater, as well as most rainwater, stream water, river water, and groundwater. Carbon Dioxide Equilibria and Their Applicationsprovides a clear, compact presentation of this topic, which is central to geochemistry and environmental engineering. It emphasizes a rigorous mathematical and thermodynamic basis for calculations and their application to realistic problems. The book's first four chapters present the basic equations, mathematical techniques for visualizing and manipulating them, and data on equilibrium constants and activity coefficients. These are presented in the general context of acid-base titration and solubility of CaCO3. The remaining chapters show how these concepts and techniques are applied to geochemistry and oceanography, in addition to their applications to water conditioning.Specific topics discussed include acid rain, freshwater, seawater, carbonate sediments in the deep oceans, the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 on the oceans, estuarine waters, brines, hydrothermal solutions, pH adjustment, prediction of calcium carbonate saturation, corrosion inhibition, and water softening. ... Book Description

Thermodynamic modelling of experimental or natural phase equilibria has become an integral part of petrology. The wide range of possible mineral compositions in natural rocks and the slow reaction kinetics that hinder direct experimentation make it necessary to have robust theoretical mixing models for interpolation and extrapolation. The contributing authors of Thermodynamic Data: Systematics and Estimation discuss, in detail, these various modelling methods and show how computer simulation of geochemical reactions enable experimentalists to explore processes that are difficult or impossible to reproduce in the laboratory. ... From the supplier: A two-tiered modeling methodology that involves both simple and complex models is presented for coupled transport and geochemistry problems. This approach is suitable for enhancing model development and computational efficiency. It is also good for ascertaining the need for coupled transport models for understanding a particular problem. This approach is applied to a dual peak breakthrough of strontium and a retarded pH front, resulting in predictions that may be used for explaining the arrival of contaminants, mass balance of contaminants and tracers, and geochemical relationships among contaminants.
