Book Description

What happens to a chemical once it enters the natural environment? How do its physical and chemical properties influence its transport, persistence, and partitioning in the biosphere? How do natural forces influence its distribution? How are the answers to these questions useful in making toxicological and epidemiological forecasts?

Environmental Chemodynamics, Second Edition introduces readers to the concepts, tools, and techniques currently used to answer these and other critical questions about the fate and transport of chemicals in the natural environment. Like its critically acclaimed predecessor, its main focus is on the mechanisms and rates of movement of chemicals across the air/soil, soil/water, and water/air interfaces, and on how natural processes work to mobilize chemicals near and across interfaces—information vital to performing human and ecological risk assessments.

Also consistent with the first edition, Environmental Chemodynamics, Second Edition is organized to accommodate readers of every level of experience. The first section is devoted to theoretical underpinnings and includes discussions of mass balance, thermodynamics, transport science concepts, and more. The second section concentrates on practical aspects, including the movement between bed-sediment and water, movement between soil and air, and intraphase chemical behavior.

This revised and updated edition of Louis J. Thibodeaux's 1979 classic features new or expanded coverage of:

  • Equilibrium models for environmental compartments
  • Dry deposition of particles and vapors onto water and soil surfaces
  • Chemical profiles in rivers and estuaries, particles and porous media
  • Fate and transport in the atmospheric boundary layer and within subterranean media
  • Chemical exchange between water column and bed-sediment
  • Intraphase chemical transport and fate

This Second Edition of Environmental Chemodynamics also includes twice as many references and 50% more exercises and practice problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indium by Schwarz-Schampera
This book would be helpful for any project in inorganic chemistry. Indium has many medicinal and industrial/petro-chemical utilizations. For instance, it is used in the manufacture of control rods. It was discovered spectroscopically in the mid 1860s by Heronymus Richter .
It melts at 157 C and boils at 2080 C with an atomic wt of
114.82. It is rarely , if ever, found in free form. Typically,
Indium is bound to sulfur according to In S3. It may be bound to
zinc (zn) blendes, tungsten, tin and iron ores. It may be utilized in conjunction with bearing alloys, semi-conductors and
medicinally. Specifically, Indium helps the body absorb and use
more of the other trace minerals . It is known that the levels
of copper and manganese in the kidneys are in direct proportion to the level of Indium. Generally, Indium exists in small amounts. It is insoluble and virtually non-existent in the food
chain. To be of use as a nutrient, Indium must be bound to a
sulfate to be water-soluble. Indium is being investigated for
its positive role in reducing cancerous tumors. Its positive effects are also seen in pain management, inflammatory disease
management & diabetes. Dietary supplementation is found in the
Indium-sulfate liquid drop method of ingestion. This book would be perfect for a class project in chemistry at virtually every
level in academe. The book has applications throughout industry,
academe and medicine. The subject matter of the research contained in this
work would require a considerable effort of time and expense to replicate. For this reason, the work has a unique value to a wide
constituency of people in the scientific community. ... Read more

Book Description

Modern geochemistry aims to provide an accurate description of geological processes, and a set of models and quantitative rules that help predict the evolution of geological systems. This work is an introduction to the mathematical methods of geochemical modeling, largely based on examples presented with full solutions. It shows how geochemical problems, dealing with mass balance, equilibrium, fractionation and dynamics and transport in the igneous, sedimentary and oceanic environments, can be reformulated in terms of equations. Its practical approach then leads to simple but efficient methods of solution. This book should help the motivated reader to overcome the formal difficulties of geochemical modeling, and bring state-of-the-art methods within reach of advanced students in geochemistry and geophysics, as well as in physics and chemistry. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Geochemistry of Natural Waters
I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters. I found this to be a very poor text to use. The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving. I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry. I would not recommend use of this text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs Work
This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater. Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times. I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts
Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.

However, I would note that if you need to start with introductory chemical concepts this isn't the book for you.

If you are weak in chemistry start elsewhere.

Still... two thumbs up from this reviewer.

Book Description

Paperback. This book represents a new "earth systems" approach to catchments that encompasses the physical and biogeochemical interactions that control the hydrology and biogeochemistry of the system. The text provides a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of catchment hydrology, principles of isotope geochemistry, and the isotope variability in the hydrologic cycle -- but the main focus of the book is on case studies in isotope hydrology and isotope geochemistry that explore the applications of isotope techniques for investigating modern environmental problems.

Isotope Tracers in Catchment Hydrology is the first synthesis of physical hydrology and isotope geochemistry with catchment focus, and is a valuable reference for professionals and students alike in the fields of hydrology, hydrochemistry, and environmental science. This important interdisciplinary text provides extensive guidelines for the application of isotope techniques for ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Another book on catchment hydrology?
A decently attempted foray into an otherwise exciting, yet overexamined academic topic. Catchment Hydrology is a field on the verge of media saturation, it seems that every scholar has his new catchment hydrology theory he is willing to espouse to packed lecture halls and cable tv hosts throughout the nation. While some have actually made important breakthroughs ( Limerick, Berkowitz et al) others are just falling in line behind the vanguards lapping up the short lived fame and glory. Maybe these "hydrologists" should get into the new fad, and by the way guys, pilates is already taken. ... Read more

Book Description

Rock Magnetism is a comprehensive treatment of fine particle magnetism and the magnetic properties of rocks. Starting from atomic magnetism and magnetostatic principles, the authors explain why domains and micromagnetic structures form in ferromagnetic crystals and how these lead to magnetic memory in the form of thermal, chemical and other remanent magnetizations. The phenomenal stability of these magnetizations, providing a record of plate tectonic motions over millions of years, is explained by thermal activation theory. One chapter is devoted to practical tests of domain state and paleomagnetic stability; another deals with pseudo-single-domain magnetism. The final four chapters place magnetism in the context of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, and extraterrestrial rocks. This book will be of great value to graduate students and researchers in geophysics and geology, particularly in paleomagnetism and rock magnetism, as well as physicists and electrical engineers interested in fine-particle magnetism and magnetic recording. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Aquatic Chemistry text for introductory course
I used this text for a one-quarter introductory Aquatic Chemistry course. The tableau method to solve equilibrium problems was positively received only by about half the students. Other texts used for this course are Pankow and Stumm and Morgan. (None of them were free of difficulties. Stumm and Morgan still serves as the best reference; but readability is a problem for an introductory course.) Morel does a good job in the treatment of metal ion kinetics.
