Book Description

Antarctica has not always been a place of ice and snow. Once part of the supercontinent of Gondwanaland, it is believed to have enjoyed a warmer climate in which plants and land animals thrived. However, nowadays less than one percent of the surface is ice free, and at bedrock level the ice can be up to a million or more years old. In comparison, the Arctic consists entirely of pack-ice which breaks into ice floes in summer and floats on the Arctic Ocean.

While the ice gives rise to spectacular scenery, both on land and sea, these regions also have an astonishing variety of wildlife. The two Poles have few common species (apart from some birds and whales) but many unique endemic ones - polar bears, walruses and puffins in the north, penguins and elephant seals in the south.

The content will cover the following topics, among others:
- Geography and geology
- Climate and weather
- Ice, icebergs, glaciers and land formations
- History and exploration
- Wildlife and flora - how unique life has evolved in a very harsh environment
- Polar science - the scientists who live and work in Antarctica, the research bases
- Icebreaker shipping and tourism
- Politics and treaties and the interested parties, including the 1988 Minerals Convention
- The people of the Arctic
- Conservation and the future (specific Polar issues, such as melting of the ice caps and ozone depletion).

Both regions have long been associated with tales of great heroism in their exploration, and here too there are common links. Roald Amundsen was first to the South Pole and died in a rescue in the north (at that time his ship, the Fram, had been furthest south and furthest north). Frederic Cook, who lodged a false claim to being first to the North Pole, was the first to winter over in Antarctica, as part of a Belgian expedition. Nowadays, tourists can visit in cruise ships and see the almost impossible task the explorers set themselves.

Both areas are of concern ecologically. For several years there has been a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica; one is now opening over the Arctic Circle. Ecologists watch both Antarctica and the Arctic for any signs of change that may have implications for the planet as a whole. They join scientists from all over the world conducting research in these unique conditions.

With interesting and authoritative text written by a team of international experts, accompanied by over a thousand superb photographs, this book will fascinate all with an interest in the Poles and their wildlife. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for beginners
I purchased two copies of this book, one for me and one for my dad. I was most interested in the geocaching game, which is really fun. The book helped me figure out what kind of GPS to buy and how to use it for the game. My dad just got one of those IQUE GPS/pdas, and the book has a couple really good chapters on that. There's maybe not as much "how to" stuff in some chapters as there could be, but I learned a lot about GPS. I recommend it for anyone who's new to GPS or just bought an IQUE.

1-0 out of 5 stars How to do everything..... BUT NAVIGATE
How to Do Everything with Your GPS leaves out the most critical thing that you might want to do with your GPS - navigate. I admire someone who can explain complicated technical things in laymen's terms, but Broida's idea of simplification is to just skip the fundamental information.

With regard to aviation and marine navigation in Chapter 7: "By far the most valuable (and obvious) advantage to having GPS in the cockpit is its ability to provide course and heading information." Actually, the GPS has no idea what direction the airplane or boat is pointed (heading information), it only knows the direction of travel information (track, never mentioned). This is not a semantic issue, but a fundamental usage issue.

Broida misses some of the better aircraft navigation software for PDA's. The programs that he mentions are not even worth considering in my opinion. He also mentions that the GPS can be used for altitude and this is important because "according to the USA Today, accidentally striking the ground is the most common killer in aviation in aviation" - DUH! What he doesn't mention is how to use GPS to avoid this common killer or how GPS used unwisely can increase this risk.

How do you actually navigate an airplane or a boat using GPS? This information is conspicuously absent. Since I have your attention, my advice is to set the data fields on the map page so that you have TRACK and BEARING or TURN (which is the difference between the two). Steer so that the TRACK matches the BEARING. The same thing can be accomplished with making TURN equal to zero. There is quite a bit more to nautical and aircraft navigation, but even this basic level of technique is not addressed. I was not able to find where any of these navigation terms were even mentioned.

He mentions that GPS can be used for hiking. But he doesn't mention that the GPS direction reference is lost when standing still. This is why many GPS receivers have built in electronic compasses. He neither mentions the availability of this feature or how to use a GPS without this feature while hiking. By the way, you can use an inexpensive compass in conjunction with the GPS generated bearing to get directional information while stopped. The electronic compass feature is nice, but not necessary. None of this information is in the book.

"If you own any GPS that can store external map data, be sure to check out DeLorme Topo USA 4.0. It's extremely versitle and feature-rich program, and at $99 it costs less than the Garmin and Magellan CDs." - p 104. Delorme makes a great product, but it will not and is not designed to load into any of the Garmin, Magellan, or any other brand receivers.

More information that is not in the book- where to get coordinates for waypoints, how to work with coordinates. ... Read more

Book Description

The astounding story of the eighteenth-century New Englander who traveled farther on four continents than anyone else in his day and who pioneered an American archetype: the restless explorer.

Called a "man of genius" by his close friend Thomas Jefferson, John Ledyard lived, by any standard, a remarkable life. In his thirty-eight years, he accompanied Captain Cook on his last voyage; befriended Jefferson, Lafayette, and Tom Paine in Paris; was the first American citizen to see Alaska, Hawaii, and the west coast of America; and set out to find the source of the Niger by traveling from Cairo across the Sahara. His greatest dream, concocted with Jefferson, was to travel alone around the world and cross the American continent from the Pacific Northwest to the Atlantic. Catherine the Great dashed that dream when she had him arrested in deepest Siberia and escorted back to the Polish border. Ledyard wrote the definitive account of Cook's last voyage and his death at the hands of Hawaiian islanders, and formed a company with John Paul Jones that launched the American fur trade in the Pacific Northwest.

Before the Revolution, Americans by and large didn't travel great distances, rarely venturing west of the Appalachians. Ledyard, with his boundless enthusiasm and wide-ranging intellect, changed all that. In lively prose, journalist James Zug tells the riveting story of this immensely influential character -a Ben Franklin with wanderlust-a uniquely American pioneer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The First World Citizen
I've been fascinated by Ledyard since I first encountered him, in 1989, at a University of Washington history lecture. At the time I was struck by the fact that I'd never heard of him before. How could this guy have been forgotten?Poking around the stacks in the library led me to Sparks' and Watrous' work, but I couldn't believe that somebody wasn't out there researching and writing about Ledyard.I've been poking around ever since. At last, Zug has delivered the biography I've been waiting for.

American Traveler serves as an outstanding introduction to one of the most fascinating figures in American history.Zug does a wonderful job describing Ledyard's relationships with movers and shakers of the late 18th century (particularly Jefferson), as well as his role as a catalyst behind the eventual expansion of American power. However, the real strength of the book is Zug's portrait of Ledyard the world traveler--a guy on the road who, though frustrated by the restrictions of time and petty bureaucracy, takes a genuine interest in the people he encounters.Yes--Ledyard was a spectacular failure as a businessman, but he understood something that many (apparently including P.J. O'Rourke) do not: traveling isn't about arriving at your destination--it's all about the road trip and the people you meet along the way.In this sense, there has never been a more spectacular success than John Ledyard. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for class or self-study
I have repeatedly used this book as the first text in an ArcView-based university course on GIS. The book uses realistic problems and settings to illustrate, step-by-step, how ArcView can be used to solve the problems and perform the needed analyses. In so doing, it serves as a good introduction to vector data analysis.

The detailed illustrations and sample software (a CD with a version of ArcView restricted to the data on the CD) enable anybody to follow through this book and work at their leisure. The text is somewhere at a junior high school level in terms of what it assumes, but it is in no way patronizing or simplistic: even graduate students have found it useful.

Sometimes follow-on analyses are suggested or sketched, but no problems are given. This is a pity, because students need additional problems to reinforce what they have just learned. Once you work through all the steps that are shown, there's nothing much else left to do.

In a few cases, the suggested analytical method is deficient. For example, in an early chapter students are shown how to site a soccer field within an open space--but the solution they derive is incorrect because the features are not projected! Other than these few deficiencies, the book is accurate and free of mistakes.

This book covers only the basic capabilities of ArcView, although at the end it briefly describes raster analysis (Spatial Analyst) and network analysis (Network Analyst).

The good design, attention to detail, and experience with GIS as well as with the software let this book rise above many others of its genre.

3-0 out of 5 stars Getting to Know ArcView
This is another teaching book with a CD. The CD works well and does what it is supposed to do. Although the cover says the CD is a trial version of ArcView. That is just a lie. The CD contains a special version of ArcView that works only with the exercises.

The book spends too much time introducing itself. It is itself an introduction but the first 100 or so pages are spent saying what they resay in the remaining chapters; and with terms the novice will probably not understand at first. I found that the book had a hard time begining, kept thinking, "When are they going to get to the point?"

Would like to see more about how to convert raw data to a file that can displayed; it finally came in chapter in 25 but only briefly.

3-0 out of 5 stars For those needing fundamentals
I bought this book to update my ESRI skills. I felt like the majority of the book was just basics, and the functionality of the included CD was somewhat limited. I feel one of the most important basics is to be able to create a layer from scratch, you cannot do this with the trial version. I understand why this is from a legal point, but not a learning point. I felt like the tutorials were far too basic, and had more of an eye on the cartography than the science and analysis. Overall, its a good book for beginners, but the more savvy user would find this boring.

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING! This is Book Only Covers ArcView 3!

OLD VERSION ALERT! OLD VERSION ALERT!

Be warned that this book covers ArcView 3.

As critical as it is to get the book that covers the correct version of the software that you have, it is amazing that the version number is not highlighted anywhere. (The only indication that this is not for a current version is the date of publication; I usually check the publishing date on any tech book, but somehow I missed it on this book.)

As for it's fitness as a guide to ArcView version 3, I can't honestly say...

Book Description

Vegetation Mapping Edited by Roy Alexander Environment Research Group, Department of Geography, Chester College, UK and Andrew C. Millington Department of Geography, University of Leicester, UK The past decade has witnessed a resurgence of interest and activity in the mapping of vegetation that has been driven by the needs of environmental modellers and policy makers on the one hand and by the increased availability of data sets and sophisticated tools for their handling and analysis on the other. This increased activity, together with the greater variety of purposes for which vegetation maps are being produced, has led to a divergence of approaches, a wider range of entities being mapped and a more varied audience of end users. Over the same time period the researcher interested in vegetation mapping has had to consult an ever-broadening range of sources in order to keep abreast of developments in the field. This book seeks to provide a review of recent developments in vegetation mapping and the purposes for which it is carried out by bringing together a series of case studies covering techniques and their applications at a range of spatial scales. The work included covers scales of enquiry from the quadrat to the biome, studies based on data gathered from ground, air and space, and applications of mapping in temperate, semi arid and tropical environments. Issues involved in the use of data sets from different sources, the recognition and handling of error and the effects of scale are also given detailed consideration. The volume concludes with a review of contemporary approaches to vegetation mapping and the identification of some key research questions. Vegetation Mapping will thus serve as a collected source of reference on techniques and approaches for the researcher while providing a rich variety of case study and methodological information for postgraduate students and undergraduates following specialist courses. ... There has been a radical series of transformations in the economic, political, social, and cultural life of Latin America. This text offers a holistic approach to understanding these changes, relating them to the wider processes of modernization and globalization. An international team of contributors from a range of disciplines contextualize their different fields within a broad political economy approach that provides a critical yet balanced analysis of the neoliberal policies provided by nearly every country in the region over the last two decades. They then argue that a new political economy is being constructed in Latin America; as national economies become radically restructured and transformed, democracy becomes the institutional norm and new social arrangements are being created within national societies. ... The is a most impressive analysis of economic, political, social and cultural life in Latin America. This excellent book offers an holistic approach to understanding these changes, relating them to the wider processes of modernization and globalization. An international group of scholars with impressive credentials and from a wide range of disciplines attempt to contextualize their different disciplinary foci within a broad political economic approach that provides a critical yet balanced view and detailed analysis of the neoliberal policies pursued by almost all countries in the region. They contend that a new political economy is being contructed in Latin America, as national economies become radically reconstructed and transformed, democracy becomes the instituional norm, and new social arrangements are being created. The constestation and alternatives to this new global modernity are also explored. In sum, this excellent book fulfills a much needed market niche for students, scholars, and the educated avid reader, who require an interdisciplinary and contemporary approach to Latin American development.

Book Description

Uses the principles of sacred geometry, archaeological evidence, and Native American legend to discover the site of a secret Templar settlement in Nova Scotia.

• Offers evidence that Scottish prince Henry Sinclair not only sailed to the New World 100 years before Columbus, but that he also established a refuge there for the Templars fleeing persecution.

• Shows that the Grail, the holy bloodline connecting the House of David to the Merovingian dynasty through Jesus and Mary Magdalene, was hidden in the New World.

In 1398, almost 100 years before Columbus arrived in the New World, the Scottish prince Henry Sinclair, Earl of Orkney, sailed to what is today Nova Scotia, where his presence was recorded by Micmac Indian legends about Glooskap. This was the same Prince Henry Sinclair who offered refuge to the Knights Templar fleeing the persecution unleashed against the order by French king Philip the Fair at the beginning of the 14th century. With evidence from archaeological sites, indigenous legend, and sacred geometry handed down by the Templar order to the Freemasons, author William F. Mann has now rediscovered the site of the settlement established by Sinclair and his Templar followers in the New World. Here they found a safe refuge for the Grail--the holy bloodline connecting the House of David to the Merovingian Dynasty through the descendants of Jesus and Mary Magdalene--until the British exiled all the Acadians in 1755. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The WORST book ever on the Templars
I forced myself to finish this book to justify the expense of buying it. I was hoping to learn more about the theory of Oak Island being linked to the Knights Templars, but after reading this book, I was ready to write off the entire thing. Mann has done nothing more than toss together every possible source of esoterica; King Arthur, the Templars, the Great Pyramid, Greek Myth... , and use it as a grab-bag for his theories. He finds "connections" in everything without thinking of alternative explanations and creates such a confusing and complicated web of motives and actions that collapses under its own weight. Mann's evidence consists of a single stone and his own interpretation of rock formations and trees. He uses his own convictions as proof of theories, such as interpreting the shepardess in Poussin's painting as being pregnant or that Glooscap was Sinclair. I was surprised he did not try to link this with the JFK assasination! The closest equivalent I could think of to this book would be the rantings of a paranoid schizophrenic, and I say that without malice, simply as a statement of fact. I strongly urge people NOT to buy this book. I would have given it no stars if I was allowed to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A compilation of obscure but compelling evidence
Written by a great-nephew of a Supreme Grand Master of the Knights Templar of Canada, The Knights Templar In The New World: How Henry Sinclair Brought The Grail To Arcadia is an exploration of the mysteries and secrets of Prince Henry Sinclair and his Templar followers, who allegedly came to Nova Scotia almost one hundred years before Christopher Columbus. A compilation of obscure but compelling evidence, that presents famous individuals of history in a manner that reads like a fantastic adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Reading - A look behind the scenes
Mr Mann presents a insightful and at times provocative challenge to conventional history. His approach combines ancient lore with contemporary history to provide a fascinating backdrop for his theory. I think that all readers will find this book's account of the relationship between the Templars and modern day Masons particularly interesting and well worth reading. ... Read more

Book Description

For better plans-and better projects
The complete guide to site analysis
Site analysis is the key to a well-designed project. In fact, the careful and complete analysis of a site and its surrounding context can lead to better development proposals, smoother design implementation, and, ultimately, higher quality built environments.
This carefully conceived book is the first to detail each crucial step in the site analysis and planning process, from site selection through design development. It shows how these activities are integrated to arrive at a site plan that successfully balances the needs of the client and other stakeholders with the site's suitability for the intended land uses. With more than 130 illustrations, this book includes many outstanding examples of maps and site plans created by leading land planning firms. It offers guidance on:
* Site identification, evaluation, and selection
* Site inventories of physical, biological, and cultural attributes

2-0 out of 5 stars A mile wide and an inch deep
I teach a college level surveying class. This book attempts to cover too much data without going into adequate detail. For an introductory class, it covers the basics too fast. For an advanced class, it does not dealadequately with the specifics. As an instructor, the book offers nosupport such as answer keys or internet support.I recommend Brinker &Wolf for intro classes and Constructions Surveying and Layout by Crawfordfor construction surveying classes.

2-0 out of 5 stars BOOK IS NOT AS INFORMATIVE AS ONE WOULD HOPE.
As an instructor, I found the problems associated with the LandSurveying field to be dated and calculations to be incorrect at times. It would help to have an answer key in order to figure out if your questions that the author wrote, can actually come up with the correct answers.I have been requesting an "Answer Key" for 2 years and yet to be able to receive one.I work for USD 501 and Teach Land Surveying. 2-0 out of 5 stars Software stinks
I read it in a library and was excited b/c it came w/software to allow for practical application of geostats. I bought it b/c it seemed wrong to use the software w/o buying the book.
The publisher sent it to wrong address. When I finally got it the software for point pattern analysis didn't work [Ch3]. I wrote Wong, an author, about the bugs and he acknowledged problems. It was nice he responded, but I still wasted my money.
Also, the authors encrypted and embedded the scripts into seperate projects. This means if you already have a project open you have to load all of your data into their projects to use the software [when it works.] ... Read more
