Book Description

This textbook contains the material for a course in the major principles of modelling crop growth processes. There is much more to crop growth than what is discussed in this textbook, but it provides a sound basis for further work and study in this field. Chapter by chapter the book leads the reader to different modelled aspects of crop growth, and at the end, the reader will have a good understanding of the Wageningen simulation model SUCROS for the potential production situation. By then, it will be much easier to find one's way through descriptions and listings of other models. Throughout the text, the study of the different topics is facilitated by exercises that support the course in a hands-on computer practical exercise.A very simple crop growth model, almost entirely based on radiation interception, is given first. This skeleton model is then expanded by submodels for respiration, carbon assimilation, plant development, and a more detailed model for radiation interception and reflection. Modelling of transpiration and the leaf energy balance is given by way of introduction. There are many listings of the submodels, written in the simulation language FST (FORTRAN Simulation Translator), as well as of SUCROS itself, together with plentiful comments. Some supporting theory is provided in the form of Appendices. The book is meant for students and scientists who would like to acquire a working knowledge of the technique of crop growth modelling. ... Book Description

The outstanding points of this book are: 1) it is the first book focused on transplant production in closed systems, 2) many of the authors are acknowledged as experts in their designated research area, and 3) the book covers both biological and engineering aspects of transplant production, and therefore, 4) it represents an integration of state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary technologies and knowledge. A book entitled Plant Production in Closed Ecosystems published in 1997 covers similar topics, but Transplant Production in the 21st Century uniquely focuses on providing updated information and new concepts for a closed system that is suitable for transplant production in the 21st Century. It includes additional information related to biotechnology/micropropagation and micro-environmental analysis/control. Transplant Production in the 21st Century will be an important publication for the field of horticulture, agriculture and forestry, for researchers and engineers in biotechnology, greenhouse technology, information technology, and environmental control. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Make it a part of your personal library !
This book is well written one and contains a vast and updated knowledge in soil microbiology. The content of this book is easy to digest especially for individuals who are new to the field of soil microbiology. The text is enriched with easy to follow displays and figures. I strongly recommend my fellow students to get this reference and make it a part of their personal library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on Microbiology
This is one of the best science textbooks that I have ever read. It is intended for students and others who are interested in everyday microorganisms and the roles they play in the environment. Topics include the history of soil microbiology, metabolism, enzymes, soil macrofauna and microfauna, microbial interactions, soil as a microbial habitat, nitrogen and other nutrient cycling processes, carbon cycling, heavy metal remediation, bioremediation and composting.

What makes this book unique is the fun way that the information is presented (from fundamental to advanced topics). What I especially liked were the breakout sections that described especially interesting environmental "hot" topics (PCBs in the environment, Se in Kesterson wetland, vermicomposting, and many others) and simple microbial experiments (e.g. making sauerkraut at home, measuring denitrification, and many others) illustrating the role of microorganisms and other procedural steps of the methods. Another aspect that I really liked was that each subject was told in a short story format with enthusiasm and wit.

I would encourage anyone interested in natural sciences to get a copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Futures & Options Markets
Dr. Catlett's book covers futures and options with real life situations.Real life situations include hedging against losses from various situations. I had the opportunity to have Dr. Catlett for a Professor, teaching financial futures markets class at New Mexico State University.

The book covers how to hedge and how not to hedge. He walks you through all of these topics to fully understand the process. There are tables and charts that to help understand the process. After completing the book you will have a great understand of futures and options markets.

The book is a great reference for futures & options trading!

4-0 out of 5 stars great intro book to options and futures
This is a good book. I had the privelege of recently attending a seminar by Lowell Catlett. He is pragmatic and thorough and yet, at times, witty. This book is written much the same way.

The book is very thorough. Ittakes you through the history of markets, how they evolved and how they areused today. It provides insights and some "Dos" and"Don'ts". He really makes you think.

It uses a lot of examplesthat are clear and very helpful. This makes it an excellent reference bookfor future trades.

The only negative I found in the book is one of itsvirtues, it is too thorough. I think some of the discussions, such asgrains and livestock, aresimilar. The book could have been shortened byabout 10 - 20 percent by combining similar options , commenting on thedifferences and providing an example.

Overall, I rate this an excellentbook! I recently got an MBA from a top school and I learned a ton. Thisbook is a must for the serious options trader who wants to build a goodunderstanding of the investment methods. ... Read more
