5-0 out of 5 stars This book is Misnamed....
It should be named something like the "Essential Math Reference Book for Farmers, Landscapers, Golf Course Superintendants, Nursery Managers etc." What a wonderful and easy to use reference book for anyone dealing with the frustrating world of area measurements, volume/fertilizer/pesticide/irrigation/seeding rate calculations, and spreader and spayer calibration. I've worn out one copy and am on my second. I use it on my farm, at work as a pesticides applicator, and in my landscaping business. This is a must-have book for folks like me that hate math but have to use it almost everyday....believe me your money won't be wasted on this one and it won't just collect dust on your shelf. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Book needs more pics; CD needs better search capabilities
I bought this book and CD in the hopes of being able to identify several rose plants that my husband had rescued from the city's bulldozers. It is not designed for an amateur like me who needs pictures and drawings. I am less interested in the parentage of roses than I am in what the terms "semi-double, reverse, exhibition form, cupped" mean. Some roses did not even have the color of the bloom listed. The CD is great if you know the name of the rose you wish to search for, but cumbersome if you do not. Yes, you can search based on characteristics of a rose, but it's not easy. For example, there are no drop-down menus for options on search criteria. A search for a red rose with a "strong" fragrance yielded no results; "intense" fragrance did. When the results are shown, there is no number count on how many roses fit the criteria, and when you select one rose from the results to view, you must re-perform the search to look at another one. It's extremely frustrating. There are pictures of roses on the CD, but the search result listing does not show you which ones have pictures and which do not. Help is limited to FAQ's (with only two questions listed) and an email address. There is no online method for updating the program so there is no hope of this version becoming any better. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate reference work on roses
If you love roses and if you want to know about the full range of rose varieties that you may encounter at your local nursery or in mail order catalogues, this volume is essential. The expense is justified in part by the CD-ROM, which gives you the ability to search the underlying database at will. I enjoyed the pictures (although they don't match other works like Botannica) as well as the articles on famous European rose gardens. In any work of this magnitude there are bound to be errors (e.g., Meilland's Michelangelo is yellow, not pink), but the overall accuracy is very impressive. If you are only dabbling in rose growing, this encyclopedic work is probably more than you need. But if you are crazy about roses, you will be crazy about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Modern Roses XI and CD-Rom
This edition of Modern Roses takes a giant step up from the last one! (MR10) By including *all* roses that could be reasonably well-documented, the usefulness of this reference has increased dramatically. In addition, the inclusion of a CD-ROM with great search capabilities is FANTASTIC.

Of course... as with any book of this nature... there are still a few errors in description, etc. However, this is very minor, compared to the volume of information contained.

Indispensable reference work for serious rose lovers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much useable info but some good ideas.
Only one paragraph on greenhouses, no wonder he only can make a few thousand. You really need a greenhouse to grow your starts in this business and to have only a little on this subject tells me alot..( he never made it big) There is no mention of caring for the enviorment here, The use of posins are recomended and no real overall plan for runoff or water table poulution, guess he doesn't care. Any way if you got extra bucks, get it cause one good idea can be worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers. Written by experts. Easy to read. Practical.
Here's their back cover blurb: "Learn how to start a nursery in your backyard with virtually no capitual investment. In an area of only 1,000 sq. ft. it is possible to generate over $5,000 worth of plants in a single growing season."

The 207 page book delivers on its promise. The book is particularly good in explaining the value of "time" in the nursery business. If you expect to make money with your greenhouse... or with a nursery business, this is an EXCELLENT book to get.

It's easy to read and contains lots of money-making ideas. Here's a way to get that greenhouse by your spouse... "look at the extra money we can make!" If you have teenage children, this is a great way for them to earn extra money. If you're a business man, I think there you can make more money with less work in other ways. But hey, it's fun. The book is oriented to growing flowers and shrubs... and not so much for growing vegetables. Although growing herbs is one of the things recommended. They deliver on describing how to make $5,000 in only 1,000 sq. ft. The most important thing this book delivers is the core thinking process that a nurseryman must analyze in terms of time, and profit per unit of time. I didn't realize this was so important, but now it makes sense to me. ... Read more

Book Description

In this fascinating book, celebrated author Judith Sumner rescues from the pages of history the practical experience and botanical wisdom of generations of Americans. Crossing the disciplines of history, ethnobotany, and horticulture --- and with a flair for the colorful anecdote --- Sumner underlines a part of the American story often ignored or forgotten: how European settlers and their descendents made use of the "strange" new plants they found, as well as the select varieties of foods and medicines they brought with them from other continents. From "turkie wheat" (corn) to "tuckahoe" (a Native American source of starch), Sumner describes the transition from wonderment to daily use, as homesteads were built upon and prospered from the plants of the New World. It is a remarkable story of the interdependence of plants and the American home. Historians, herbalists, home gardeners, and ethnobotanists will find American Household Botany a treasure trove of original research and insight. ... Read more

Book Description

Peonies, of the genus Paeonia, are among the most dramatic and beautiful flowers for gardens. Although species of Paeonia are found in the wild throughout the Northern Hemisphere, they are mainly associated with Asia and Asian gardens. Josef Halda is one of the few botanists who has traveled to see every known peony species and subspecies in the wild, often in extremely remote areas. He documents twenty-five species in these pages, including forty subspecies and varieties. He also provides an account of the closely related genus Glaucidium, whose two species will be of intense interest to peony fanciers.

Although this work carries the mantle of authority from Halda's work in taxonomy, it is also a helpful resource for everyday gardeners who wish to try even the rarest peonies in their gardens. James Waddick has teamed up with Josef Halda to provide valuable information on growing peony species, with a full account of cultivation requirements, hardiness, propagation, and diseases and pests.

The text is graced with the stunning botanical paintings of Jarmila Haldová, Josef Halda's wife and one of Europe's leading book illustrators. Haldová has also contributed dozens of useful line drawings of peony characters to aid in identification. Period woodcuts and other historical illustrations round out the work.

Sponsored by the Heartland Peony Society, which helped fund its publication, The Genus Paeonia is a rare work of beauty, science, and practical value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brief Commentary on the value of this book
This book was used by my son Mark Luftig in a paper in his collage study in hortaculture. The information, details and little known facts this book has is simply amazing! For example, the paper mentioned was on the bulb family Hippeastrum. No other book (he had looked at over 30 other books in 4 different librarys) before he found this volume in the reference section on campus. Not only did it give information he had already gathered, but very specific information such as tempature needed to raise them, dormancy controls, media details and postharvest just to name a few. There are hundreds of other plants listed, all treated the same way. This enabled him to get his a very high mark on his paper as well as his final grade. It is very detailed and not for the weekend gardener but for the serious student or professional. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Neither the first nor the best...
This is not, as the editorial review states, "the first publication devoted exclusively to Chateau Latour." An earlier and far more definitive book on Chateau Latour is Edmund Penning-Rowsell's translation of Charles Higounet's magnum opus, titled "Chateau Latour: The History of a Great Vineyard 1331-1992." There is a beautiful leather bound and numbered first edition of 1500, published in 1993 by Segrave Foulkes. The book runs nearly 570 pages, and it includes numerous maps, charts, photos, and reproductions of ancient documents from the Latour archives. Want to know what the annual production was between 1775 and 1825? Higounet will tell you. Need a list of key staff members at the estate from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century? Ditto, it's in there. Care to know what Latour's income and expenses looked like between 1916 and 1928? Need details about the updated drainage system constructed in 1885-1890, or the fire in 1892? It's all there. I don't believe there is a better researched and more comprehensive book about any other single vineyard property.

In short, Dovaz has put together a pleasant, superficial coffee table book about Latour that is neither the first nor the best. If a coffee table book is what you want, it serves the purpose well. However, if you are truly serious about Latour and about wine literature, and you want a unique and comprehensive book about the property and its history, bust the piggy bank (it will set you back about $...) and go find a copy of the Higounet/Penning-Rowsell volume. You will be very glad you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Striding Towards the Next Millennium
The book has revealed much secrets of the legendary Chateau Latour. The reader can learn greatly on how this magnificent vinyard earns its long standing reputation. The book itself is very pleasant to read and illustrations that can certainly entice your taste buds. The author has shown a great deal of reasearch and knowledge on the Chateau. The readers should find themselves learned and confident to the fact that Latour will continue to be on the Top 5 for years to come. This is indeed another collectible book particulaly for all fine wine lovers! ... Read more
