Book Description

Breakthroughs in combinatorial chemistry and molecular biology, as well as an overall industry trend toward accelerated development, mean the rate of sample generation now far exceeds the rate of sample analysis in the pursuit of producing new and better pharmaceuticals. LC/MS is an analytical tool that helps the researcher identify the most promising sample early in the selection process, effectively creating a shortcut to finding new drugs. This book is the first to describe LC/MS applications within the context of drug development, including the discovery, preclinical, clinical, and manufacturing phases.
In addition to the thorough technical analysis of this tool, LC/MS Applications in Drug Development provides perspective on the significant changes in strategies for pharmaceutical analysis. A process overview of drug development from an analytical point of view is provided along with essential data required to successfully bring a drug to market. The incorporation of LC/MS is illustrated from target to product. Chapters pertaining to the discovery process itself include:

-Proteomics
-Glycoprotein Mapping
-Natural Products Dereplication
-Lead Identification Screening
-Open-Access LC/MS
-In Vitro Drug Screening

Written for both the analytical chemist who uses LC/MS applications and the pharmaceutical scientist who works with the drugs they produce, LC/MS Applications in Drug Development is the premier reference on the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars solving simultaneou material and energy balance
When coal is distilled by heating without contact with air, a wide variety of solid, liquid, and gadeous products of commercial importance is produced, as well as some significant air pollutants. The nature and amounts of the products produced depend on the temperature used in the decomposition and the type of coal. At low temperatures(400 to 750 Centigrade)the yield of synthesis gas is small relative to the yield of liquid products, whereas at high temperatures (above 900 Centigrade) the reverse is true. For the typical process flowsheet, shown in Figure P6.23:
(a)How many tons of the various products are being produced?
(b)Make an energy balance around the primary dislillation tower and benzol tower.
(c)How much (in pounds) of 40% NaOH solution is used per day for the purification of phenol?
(d)How much 50% Sulfuric acid is used per day in the pyridine purification?
(e)What weight of Sodium Sulfate is produced per day by the plant?
(f)How many cubic feet of gas per day are produced? What percent of the gas (volume)is needed for the ovens?

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book
Basic Principles and Calculations in Chemical Engineering is an excellent text book. 5-0 out of 5 stars An absorbing intermediate to advanced level chemical text
Now in an updated second edition, Chemistry Connections: The Chemical Basis Of Everyday Phenomena is an amazing volume with chapters based around answers to questions such as "What causes an egg to crack if it's boiled too rapidly?"; "Why do carbonated drinks go flat as they warm?"; "Why do lightsticks glow?"; "How does a timed-release medicine work?"; and much, much more. The collaborative effort of Kerry K. Karukstis (Professor of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College) and Gerald R. Van Hecke (Professor of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College), Chemistry Connections is an absorbing intermediate to advanced level chemical text that makes learning chemistry a lot of fun in some unique but quite effective ways.

2-0 out of 5 stars there are better alternatives
Overall this book and is fairly successful in its aim of explaining a selection of everyday chemical phenomena in terms accssible to most people. There are a couple of points which really let it down though.
First, the presentation of the material and the diagrams could be greatly improved. For example, there is a "3-D" structure of EDTA given. In fact, it just seems to be a 2-D Chemdraw diagram pasted in to Chem3D! It gives no sense of how the dispostion of the oxygen and nitrogen atoms allow EDTA to surround the metal centre thus making it an effective metal sequestering agent.
Second, certain sections go in to extraordinary detail concerning the physical chemistry of certain phenomena. Rather complicated equations and diagrams are presented which don't aid the reader in really understanding conceptualising the processe which are described.
Third, annoyingly, temperatures are presented only in Fahrenheit. Hello!? Did the authors not consider that they may have readers outside of the US.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Great teacher resource
I found Chemistry Connections very interesting and informative. I am a high school science teacher and I already have a strong background in chemistry. The format presents infomation on each question at multiple levels of sophistication, from introductory information accessible without much knowledge of chemistry to in-depth information on specific molecular structures and interactions. This book would be a great resource for chemistry teachers. My only critisism is that the writing style could be a bit more engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating without forsaking the science
Chemistry Connections is an excellent, well-written book that I found extremely easy and fun to read. It is a fascinating book for both the layperson and the scientist, presenting explanations of everyday phenomena that all of us have wondered about at one time or another. Things like household cleaners, paper money, seashells, shampoo, and chili pepper are explained on a simplified chemical basis, and then on a more detailed scientific basis. Chemical structures and some reactions are presented, as well as very current references and websites on each topic. This has got to be the most entertaining chemistry book I have every read! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ok look at corrosion
This textbook was my senior level undergraduate text on corrosion. I would classify it as average. The writing is somewhat ambiguous in spots. This was reinforced as I read it a second time in preparation for PhD qualifying exams.

Problems with it:
1. Inconsistent notation. Many reaction potentials are subscripted as a anodic, but the Nernst equation immediately following is written for the cathodic form of the rxn.
2. The treatment of the Nernst equation is lacking in detail, particularly in regard to the choice of reference states. The notion of reaction affinity is not mentioned.
3. Mixed potential theory is introduced without a clear description/justification for writing all reactions in their cathodic form. I found this confusing on the first time through.
4. In the section on high temperature oxidation, a standard defect notation, like Kroger-Vink, is not used.
5. I found the descriptions of some of the methods for measuring overpotentials less than clear.

The author is apparently now deceased, so it is doubtful the book will be updated. If you are a teacher looking for a corrosion book, I would suggest looking elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory text
My Ph.D. research involves surface and interface science, so I read a lot of texts in this topic area. This book is one of the best introductory texts I have seen to surface and interface science. It is geared towards the undergraduate student in science and engineering who has little knowledge of quantum, solid state, or thermodynamics. The text flows cleanly with lots of simple pictures and diagrams to illustrate ideas. Important equations are included, but the amount of math is kept to a minimum. All the key ideas in surface science are mentioned, such as adhesion, tribology, wetting, oxidation, catalysis, etc. There is adequate mention of applications, technologies, and how they are related together. The book is organized such that each chapter covers a specific topic, and they can be read independently of each other, making it a great reference. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about surface or interface science. ... Read more

Book Description

Despite the extensive literature on safety, few tools have been available to help managers quantitatively assess the level of safety management and the quality of the safety practices in organizations. In his consulting practice, Dr. Jim Stewart, a former executive at DuPont, developed such a method, crafting a safety survey centering on a comprehensive questionnaire for employees at all levels, that reveals the true level of corporate commitment to safety.

Managing for World Class Safety first describes the model of safety management that underpins the questionnaire and then demonstrates how this innovative procedure illuminates critical intangibles like management commitment, the enforcement of rules, worker involvement, and injury investigation.

The central part of this book is the description of research at the University of Toronto that applies the questionnaire in comprehensive research at five of the world’s safest companies and five with very poor safety. The questionnaire polled 700 people in the ten companies, "measuring" the level of more than twenty key elements such as:

  • The workers’ perception of the priority given to safety
  • The belief that all injuries can be prevented
  • The extent to which line management takes responsibility/accountability for safety
  • How well safety rules are followed and enforced
  • The frequency and quality of safety meetings
  • The level of recognition to reinforce safety excellence
  • In every element, the contrast between the responses from the very safe companies and those from the companies with poor safety was dramatic, clearly depicting where the former succeed and the latter fail
By developing quantitative benchmark data, Stewart reasons that it will be easier to convince reluctant management to undertake the fundamental change necessary for a "step change" in their company performance. Managing for World Class Safety promises a revolutionary new approach to workplace safety improvement for corporate leaders, safety professionals, and regulators. ... Read more

Book Description

In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in the science of adhesion. Despite its multidisciplinary and undoubtedly industrial character, the wealth of phenomena to be found in the study of adhesion has drawn researchers from many seemingly disparate scientific disciplines. The intention of these books is to provide an updated view of the state of the art of adhesion science and to fill in the rather large gap in the compilation of knowledge related to adhesion science.

This set of two volumes describes adhesion science from three fundamental perspectives: mechanics, surfaces and chemistry. Volume 1 focuses attention on the contribution of mechanic principles and solutions to understanding the fabrication, design, analysis, and testing of adhesive bonds. It also offers a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of stresses, deformation, and fracture parameters associated with a range of adhesive bonds. Volume 2 dea ... Read more

Book Description

Throughout the world, milk and milk products are indispensable components of the food chain. Not only do individual consumers use liquid milk for beverages and cooking, but food manufacturers use vast quantities of milk powder, concentrated milks, butter, and cream as raw materials for further processing. Effective quality assurance in the dairy industry is needed now more than ever. This completely revised and expanded Third Edition of Dairy Microbiology Handbook, comprising both Volume I: Microbiology of Milk and Volume II: Microbiology of Milk Products, updates the discipline’s authoritative text with the latest safety research, guidelines, and information.

Pathogens have become a major issue in dairy manufacturing. Escheria coli is a concern, and milk-borne strains of Mycobacterium avium sub-sp. paratuberculosis have been identified as a possible cause of Crohn’s disease. Even little-known parasites like Cryptosporidium have caused disease outbreaks. Consequently, a hazard analysis of selected control/critical points (HACCP) in any manufacturing process has become essential to prevent the contamination of food. This volume also:

-Discusses new diagnostic techniques that allow a pathogen to be detected in a retail sample in a matter of hours rather than days
-Provides thorough coverage of dairy microbiology principles as well as practical applications
-Includes the latest developments in dairy starter cultures and genetic engineering techniques
-Offers completely updated standards for Good Manufacturing Practice

Quality control and product development managers, microbiologists, dairy scientists, engineers, and graduate students will find the Third Edition of Dairy Microbiology Handbook to be a vital resource. ... Read more

Book Description

Charles Hansen began his work with solvents in 1962, and almost immediately began producing new and groundbreaking results. Since then, his Hansen Solubility Parameters have been extensively used and proven valuable to a variety of industries, including coatings, adhesives, plastics, protective clothing, and environmental protection. They allow correlations and systematic comparisons previously not possible, such as polymer solubility, swelling and permeation, surface wetting and dewetting, the solubility of organic salts, and many biological applications. Until now, however, their seemingly universal ability to predict molecular affinities has been generally taken as semiempirical.Moving beyond the Hildebrand and Flory theories, Hansen found that his approach not only quantitatively describes hydrogen bonding and polar bonding in many types of systems, but in fact agrees with and extends the very general Prigogine theory. This explains why the correlations all seem to fit with an apparently "universal" 4: it results from the validity of applying the geometric mean rule to describe dispersion, permanent dipole-permanent dipole, and hydrogen bonding interaction in mixtures of unlike molecules. Hansen Solubility Parameters provides new tables of previously unpublished correlations and parameters. The author illuminates his text with practical examples related to coatings, biological systems, pigments, and fibers, and takes a general approach that makes this reference ideal for predicting compatibility, adsorption on surfaces, orientation toward materials of similar affinities (self-assembly), and other phenomena associated with solubility and affinity. Chemists, chemical engineers, and biochemists will find this book-the collected work and experience of the father of its concept-intriguing for its theory and invaluable for its data. ... Read more

Book Description

For centuries the transformation of grapes into wine has been the focus of much scientific research but it was not until the nineteenth century that the role of yeasts in alcoholic fermentation was discovered. Since this discovery the findings of chemists, biochemists and microbiologists have led to controlled conditions in winemaking, producing more varied and higher quality wines.

Handbook of Enology Volume 1: The Microbiology of Wine and Vinifications uniquely combines scientific knowledge with the description of day-to-day work in the first stages of winemaking, from grape-picking to the end of the fermentation processes. It discusses the scientific basics and technological problems of wine-making and the resulting consequences for the practitioner, providing an authoritative and complete reference manual for both the winemaker and the student. This text will be invaluable to winemakers, students of enology or vinification and chemists interested in winemaking.

Pretty comprehensive, and more in depth than most others, this is worth investigating if you're into the topic. Easy to read translation helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Technical But Worth The Effort
I was given this book by a friend of mine studying enology at UC Davis. I work in the vineyard/winery industry (trellising) and needed a basic understanding of vineyard and winemaking operations. While this book is quite technical at times, and it is long, it is a rewarding read and base of information for the layperson or someone employed in a related industry. The tables and appendix of info is substantial, and while I am no chemist (my degree is in history), the writing was clear enough for me to follow along the majority of the time. If your interest in the field is strong and you can keep reminding yourself that this really is a textbook, the end result is a mini degree in Enology! ... Read more

Book Description

Broadly describes the essential topics of the organic chemicals industry
In the past two decades, the organic chemicals industry has undergone unprecedented restructuring, complicated feedstock problems, and massive shifts of capacity to developing countries. In the developed world, specialty chemicals have gained increasing significance. Although the fundamentals of organic chemical and polymer production have remained largely constant, one needs to be aware of the economic, structural, and political changes in the industry in order to understand its current state.
This much-expanded Second Edition of Industrial Organic Chemicals presents the various technologies and processes involved in the organic chemicals industry as an organized body of knowledge. It describes the chemistry of the seven basic building block chemicals and their derivatives, how they are manufactured, their economic importance, uses, and associated environmental issues. Also covered are two topics essential to an understanding of modern industrial chemistry-catalysis and polymer synthesis.
Key additions to this Second Edition include discussion of:
* Sustainability and "green" chemistry
* Dendrimers
* Metallocenes
* Chemicals in biotechnology
* Specialty chemicals for pharmaceuticals, electronics, fire retardation, fuel additives, foods, and other uses
* Economic, political, and social concepts for understanding future directions of the industry
Industrial Organic Chemicals, Second Edition presents the chemistry of both large-scale and specialty products while taking into account important political, environmental, and economic considerations. It provides both a narrative account of the evolution of today's industry from the viewpoint of authors intimately involved with the changes, and an essential reference for chemists, chemical engineers, plastics engineers, petroleum engineers, managers, executives, and policy makers working in and with the organic chemical industry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only good if you want to do simulations
As for using this book for design - I would say that it is marginal at best. If you happen to use Aspen and do everything using a process simulator, this book is pretty good. From and economics/costing standpoint, this book doesn't even come close to Peters & Timmerhaus. Does not have much of a discussion on material selection - a definite drawback. It does include a nice appendix on design heuristics that draws from Walas and other sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair good
This book is really good for process engineers. I don't know if there is a different edition of the one I have but there's little about CHEMCAD, the book is too focused on other simulation softwares and if you don't have one of those; solving some proposed problems gets really difficult and frustating. Packed with heuriustics on process and equipment design.Excellent choice!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in the market about chemical process synthesis
Covering the main topics in chemical process synthesis an design, this book present a broad view of the state of the art techniques and methods to achieve an optimum design.

With this work, Dr. Seider, et al, have given an invaluable contribution to the teaching of this field, presenting a logical an principle based approach for the "basic plant design", in contrast to the experience based traditional view.

Focusing on the extensive use of commercial process simulators, the book presents an overview of the conceptual basis of process simulation and optimization, but not its mathematical detail, giving the engineer the opportunity to focus on the process instead of focus on the mathematical and computational problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in the process design and synthesis field
The ultimate book for process synthesis, that combines the synthesis and design of chemical processes. ... Read more
