5-0 out of 5 stars a vade mecum for the protein biochemist!
I perform so much protein purification and yet i still find this book to be a helpful reference for pointing me in new directions in the lab. although some of the sections are not terribly useful, they describe each major type of chromatography in a reasonable way and also discuss what to do with your protein once it is purified (e.g. mass spec, library screening); again in a way that is understandable!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must book for biochemist that intend to purify proteins
This is a must book for biochemist and people that intend to become one. It gives a vast background on most biochemical methods used for the purification of proteins, including the history behind the methods. Not to mention the availability of comments on most topics, that help in understading the limits of the various procedures. ... Read more

Book Description

Many chemical substances or compounds - organic or inorganic, natural or synthetic - are not used in their pure form. In order for the active ingredient to be most effective or to obtain the ideal delivery form for the market, the actual synthesis and purification steps are followed by formulation to give end products that range from powders, agglomerates, and granules to suspensions, emulsions, microemulsions, microcapsules, instant preparations, liposomes, and tablets.

Formulation combines colloid and surface chemistry with chemical process engineering; sometimes it consists of a simple mixing operation, sometimes it requires an entire series of rather complicated engineering procedures such as comminution, dispersion, emulsification, agglomeration or drying.

This book covers basic physico-chemical theory as well as its applications in the chemical industry for the production of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, pigments and dyes, food, detergents, cosmetics and many other products; it also provides chemists and chemical engineers with the necessary practical tools for the understanding of the structure/ activity relationship. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars An admirable but overall weak effort
Considering the lack of texts in this important area, it is difficult to compare this monograph to anything else. The authors do an admirable job of covering a wide range of topics in everything from colloids to rheology to solid forms. However, the flow of the text is poor, and there are numerous mistakes. The greatest problem with this book is the translation--it is clear that much was lost in going from the original German to English. In a few cases, the original German words were left in the text. With so few other books covering this topic, I would cautiously recommend this book. Hopefully the next version will improve on the translation, and cover some new territory (such as the application of Design of Experiment methods to formulation). ... Read more

Book Description

The lock-and-key principle formulated by Emil Fischer as early as the end of the 19th century has still not lost any of its significance for the life sciences. The basic aspects of ligand-protein interaction may be summarized under the term 'molecular recognition' and concern the specificity as well as stability of ligand binding.
Molecular recognition is thus a central topic in the development of active substances, since stability and specificity determine whether a substance can be used as a drug. Nowadays, computer-aided prediction and intelligent molecular design make a large contribution to the constant search for, e. g., improved enzyme inhibitors, and new concepts such as that of pharmacophores are being developed.
An up-to-date presentation of an eternally young topic, this book is an indispensable information source for chemists, biochemists and pharmacologists dealing with the binding of ligands to proteins.

The 3rd edition of The Science and Technology of Rubber provides a broad survey of elastomers with special emphasis on materials with a rubber-like elasticity. As in the 2nd edition, the emphasis remains on a unified treatment of the material; exploring topics from the chemical aspects such as elastomer synthesis and curing, through recent theoretical developments and characterization of equilibrium and dynamic properties, to the final applications of rubber, including tire engineering and manufacturing.

Many advances have been made in polymer and elastomers research over the past ten years since the 2nd edition was published. Updated material stresses the continuous relationship between the ongoing research in synthesis, physics, structure and mechanics of rubber technology and industrial applications. Special attention is paid to recent advances in rubber-like elasticity theory and new processing techniques for elastomers. This new edition is comprised of 20% new material, including a new chapter on environmental issues and tire recycling.

· Explores new applications of rubber within the tire industry, from new filler materials to green tires (a tire that has yet to undergo curing and vulcanization).
· 30% of the material has been revised from the previous edition with the addition of 20% new material, including a chapter on the environment.
· A mixture of theory, experiments, and practical procedures will offer value to students, practitioners, and research and development departments in industry.

The cleaning of a work of art often involves removing not only dirt and grime but also unwanted layers of varnish, gilding, and paint from the work's surface. The challenge for conservators lies in finding a cleaning agent that will act on one layer without affecting the layer being preserved and without leaving any harmful residues on the cleaned work. This book, which examines gel cleaning in the treatment of paintings and painted works of art, presents the methodologies, data, and results of a collaborative project of the Getty Conservation Institute and Winterthur Museum. Among the issues covered are the theory and application of gel cleaning systems, the detection of residues left on the surfaces of objects cleaned with these systems, research into solvent-gel and solvent residues, stability of surfactants during natural and artificial aging, and recommendations for formulating gels for specific cleaning tasks. ... Book Description

Viruses are microorganisms that are as varied in type as the plants and animals of the macroscopic world. A particularly virulent virus can infect and kill a human host, which is 10 million times larger. The human immune system is the first line of defense against any infectious organism. However, sometimes this protection proves inadequate to the viral challenge. In this situation humans attempt to provide additional aid in retarding viral reproduction through the use of antiviral drugs until an overwhelmed immune system is able to cope with the infection. This type of self-help is the object of antiviral drug research.

Antiviral Drugs by John Driscoll provides up-to-date information on the classification, history, structure, preclinical development, bioactivity, pharmacology, and effectiveness of the 72 most important antiviral agents. A carefully researched collection of over 400 references places details of definitive recent antiviral research at the reader's fingertips. An appendix contains for each drug an at-a-glance, detailed sketch, which includes chemical structure and molecular formula, identification numbers, synonyms, physical properties, toxicities, and manufacturers. Introductory chapters describe where viruses fit into the world of microorganisms, explore the unique properties of DNA and RNA viruses, and show how new antiviral drugs are discovered and developed into useful medicines. ... Book Description

Unifying a wide range of materials synthesis techniques, 'Aerosol Processing of Materials' provides a detailed overview of the production of materials by the use of gas phase processes. Aerosol processes are responsible for the production of many of today's most advanced materials, especially in the semiconductor, optical waveguide, and thin film industries. Many of the unique properties of nanophase materials and composites are only possible through the application of acrosol in materials processing. This book describes various types of aerosol processes and the role of aerosols in materials processing. The work presents the advantages and disadvantages of each process in terms of cost, complexity, purity, and materials properties; and compares these factor to alternative methods of powder and film formation. The title provides the theory needed to understand and advance the fundamentals of this rapidly expanding material manufacturing processes. Written by well-respected leaders in the field, the book illuminates the roles of particle size characterization and size distributions; heat, mass, and momentum transfer; particle transport; condensation and evaporation; and coagulation and coalescence. 'Aerosol Processing of Materials' provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive single source of information available on gas-to-particle powder formation; liquid/solid-to-solid powder formation; film formation; reactor design; and particle/film characterization. ...
