    4-0 out of 5 stars A good one semester advanced inorganic chemistry text
    It's hard to write an inorganic textbook that will please everybody. In general, there are three different types of undergraduate inorganic chemistry courses offered:
    1) One semester Descriptive Inorganic (pre P. chem)
    2) One semester Advanced Inorganic (post P. chem)
    3) Two semester sequence (post P. chem)

    Missler and Tarr's text is written for the second audience. If you are interested in a book that (i) is written at the jr/sr level; (ii) emphasizes group theory, molecular orbital theory, coordination chemistry, spectroscopy, reaction mechanisms and organometallic chemistry; and (iii) can be covered in one semester without killing the average undergraduate, then this is going to be a good text for you. If you are interested in descriptive chemistry or want a complete overview of inorganic chemistry, then you aren't going to be happy with M&T.

    In my opinion, this is the best textbook on the market for a one-semester advanced inorganic course. My student's opinions of M&T were somewhat lukewarm, but at least it didn't inspire the scathing criticism that two other texts received in previous years. It's not a perfect book, but it is concise and well written for the audience it is intended to serve.

    This textbook is a paradigm in the art of conciseness: while I admire Miessler and Tarr's ability to convey the massive amount of every chapter in so few pages, it makes for extraordinarily difficult. My professor thought this would be a useful text to cover our introductory class, as it does not waste time on basic information on periodicity, etc. However, after a few weeks of telling us what not to read (as it was far too abstruse), and resorting to other textbooks, she had to give up altogether on this one. I imagine this work's chief usefulness will come to graduate students needing a "refresher", but not to anyone else. There are too few grainy pictures, questions that rarely relate to the material in the chapter, and a text whose density rivals the Bible.

    M&T do an admirable job of covering the wide and rapidly developing field of inorganic chemistry.

    Their coverage of electronic spectra and symmetry are especially notable. While this book is maybe one notch below Huheey, Keiter, et al textbook, M&T cover plenty for a one-semester junior/senior level course. There use of illustrations is informative and tasteful.

    Less dense and more readable than Huheey, I have been advocating for the past year for the department to change the standardized inorganic text to M&T. It is more approachable for the non-chemistry major while still covering everything you need to know for more advanced studies.

    Clearly, THE inorganic book to buy if you are only going to use one for your undergraduate experience.

    I am a chemistry major and have used this book for both semesters of Inorganic chemistry. If you have had quantum mechanics prior to reading this book it may be more helpful. However the extensive reference to point-groups and character tables is way overdone, only because the book does a horrible job of explaining point-groups and the creation of character tables. Our prof had to constantly omit sections from the book because it often overcomplicated many concepts.

    This book was far more helpful the second semester inorganic where the constant reference to point groups decreased somewhat. The concepts explained in the second half were also much more readable.
    Needless to say this was one of the few chemistry texts I have sold back, since I know I can find other more useful texts as references.

    One must look at this book from the standpoint of the authors. This book is written from a symmetry and point-group standpoint. Having met the authors, I learned that the symmetry and point-group chapter (3?) was written first, then everything thereafter came from that. Also, this was NEVER meant to be a comprehensive textbook. It's designed to be used for a 1 semester course. What is excellent is that the basics are taught really well (the point-group stuff, and the ligand-field theory chapter) and that there are literature references to almost all topics in the book. If you feel like you don't get it, this book faciliates extended learning by pointing the reader to primary resources. If you like learning and have a good prof, this is a good book. ... Read more

    I bought this book on the recommendation of one of my chemistry advisors. I must say, it is one of the best books available on the market for inorganic chemistry. The chapters on bonding, solid state, and coordination are very well done, but the authors have done a good job on the rest as well. They don't try to gloss over anything and provide references for further reading. I used this book as background for an inorganic synthesis project; I am using it for a one-semester inorganic class now (the book was designed for a two-semester class), and I will use it again when I take a higher class in inorganic chemistry.

    If you ever need to know anything about inorganic chemistry of today, buy this book. It's almost a dictionary for inorg-chemists.

    This book is a fantastic approach for Inorganic Chemistry! Far from the usual descriptive inorganic chemistry found in other books, Huheey's work is a complete and thorough guide to undergraduate students; it explains important subjects which are left out in other works.

    The chapters about bonding are specially well written and have good information that can be well understood by chemistry students.

    There is only one little flaw, its lack of colored pictures. It may seem silly, but some students can be greatly encouraged by this.

    4-0 out of 5 stars NICE TEXT FOR UNDERGRAD INORGANIC CHEMISTRY
    With this edition of "Advanced Inorganic Chemistry", Albert Cotton and his co-authors have proved that they kept track of all the recent developments in the field.
    This text provides clear and balanced coverage, as it applies to Inorganic Chemistry. Every branch of the course was browsed, and with generous details too. In addition to the general principles and laws, there are updated information on: Atomic Structures of elements, Chemical Bondings and related associations; as well as Chemical Equilibria and Enthalpy.
    Together with its insight in Nuclear Chemistry, the details this book provided on inorganic elements and compounds is worthy of praise. It is a fine textbook, which anyone who has the basic knowledge of elementary chemistry should be glad to read.

    The 5th edition of this book had been compulsory reading during my undergraduate inorganic chemistry courses: it was the inorganic chemistry bible. This edition fails to reach the high standard of its predecessor. In fact, it isn't even a good advanced inorganic chemistry text. Much of the really useful stuff that forms the basis of an understanding of inorganic chemistry has been omitted in favour of niche topics. The book would be better called 'Advances in Inorganic Chemistry' or 'Selected Topics in Inorganic Chemistry'.

    This was one of the best book for inorganic chemistry, but this edition is very different from the previous ones. Many useful chapters have been done away with; they have been replaced with chapters rather poor, especially those about catalysis.
    I advise the fifth edition, which is much better, even if it's quite old: the updates of new edition don't offset its flaws.

    The first editions of this book made a real revolution in inorganic chemistry. The approach in this book has not realy changed during the years but I still think it is a must-have book. It is easy to read with a lot of data, structures and tables. In my oppinion it should be combined with Greenwood's "Chemistry of the elements" and Douglas' et al.     This book is a must for any undergrad, graduate student or for that matter, CHEMIST, at any level who is interested in Name Reactions. It contains 331 name reactions that range from classic organic chemistry to modern day organic chemistry. An excellent collection of important name reactions that is in an easy to read format. Each reaction contains a brief summary, a general reaction scheme and a detailed arrow pushing mechanism.

    I really like this book because of its contents and simplicity. Its very easy to find the reaction you are looking for and the information is complete. It would be very helpful in studying for advance organic chemistry exams or as a quick reference when you do not know a particular named reaction. The index is about average for this type of book; however, this book is based on the fact that you are looking up named reactions and not using it as a functional group conversion reference.

    After all is said and done, I can truly say that I am glad I purchased this book. It is a complete summary of named reactions and I look forward to using it in the years to come.

    For anyone in need of a general reference on the chemical elements and their compounds (anyone majoring or working in chemistry), this book is indeed the bible. It has the advantage of being a well-written reference, but make no mistake, it is a reference - in the same way that a book on grammar, even if it is well-written, is still a book on grammar. Which means that if you are looking for an interesting and pleasantly readable popular science book about the chemical elements, and unless you have a serious technical interest in chemistry, this is probably not the best choice. The author doesn't make any claims that it was written for a popular audience, but some of the reviews seem to hint that it might be.

    Did you know that the ending ON in silicon was chosen (by Thomas Thomson) to stress the analogy of this element with both carbon and boron? I didn't. Along with such kind of historical details, Greenwood and Earnshaw's book contains a great deal of information (data, tables, graphs, etc.) about the elements of the Periodic Table and their corresponding compounds. The material is logically organized in 31 chapters, which are followed by 7 appendices (1341 pages!). This chemistry bible should stay on the desk of every chemist and scientist alike.

    I bought this book as a recommended text to accompany a senior/graduate two semester inorganic chemistry of the elements course. One of the few "texts" I would have had no problems buying outside of school. The information is extensive, but well organized and useful.

    This book is an essential component of the practicicing inorganic chemist's library. The fundamental information contained within are the seeds for the further study of chemistry.

    Although I have some formal chemistry training, I am not a professional chemist, nor teacher. However, since childhood I have been fascinated by the chemical elements. I suppose this is similar to the fascination for prime numbers, Platonic solids, or elementary particles.

    I suspect there are many others "out there" sharing this fascination. If so, and you are interested in any of the following, this book might be for you:

    1) why are most elements metals? 2) why are there so few liquid elements? 3) why are there no gaseous metals? (Well actually there is: hydrogen) 4) why is there an island of super-dense elements centered about osmium? 5) why is carbon unique in that it is the progenitor of a vast family of compounds (the subject of organic chemistry)? 6) why do carbon's two nearest neighbors, silicon and boron, not have similar empires? (Silicon does have an empire -- rocks! -- but it is obviously quite different)7) what makes "heavy metals" heavy, and why are they so toxic? 8) why is there virtually no technetium in the Earth, though it is a relatively light metal, and not a member of the "heavy" radio-active series? 9) why is deuterium virtually a distinct elements (rather than just a form {isotope} of hydrogen)?

    The book is "friendly" enough so as not to intimidate non-specialist, but at the same time it contains sufficient details and technical information to interest the expert. A special asset is the grouping of elements according to the periodic table. The mysteries of the transitions elements are especially well covered.

    The book is enhaced by excellent graphics.

    The price, while high for say a novel, it quite reasonable for a technical book.

    I used this book as an alternate text for a graduate level course in chemical hydrogeology. This was by far the best textbook I used. The class text and most others that I used were qualitative texts. This book presents a quantitative approach to equilibrium chemistry. This definately helped clear up several topics and is full of plenty of examples. At the end of the chapters there are suggestions for additional reading and many practice problems. The authors present cchemical kinetics, equilibrium, acid-base reactions, coordination chemistry, precipitation and dissolution, and redox reactions. This book is definately helpful as it goes through many problems step-by-step and is very instructive.

    While the level of difficulty compared to other class textbooks is higher, it provides a real world examples of problems environmental engineers find in their field. This book will suit better as a reference book for undergraduate and a textbook for graduate students, it goes beyond the classic theoretical solutions. One of the authors is a professor in a very good university in California. You may find this fact very important because many of the theories, formulas and conclusions that are being used in the industry are contained in this book, and have been derived from doctoral work by Ph.D. candidates at that University. You may want to keep this book as a reference after you have finished your graduate school. Every environmental engineer or scientists must have a copy of this book. Believe me! We used this book at the LMU Graduate Program.

    This book includes the properties of water, introduction to and application of thermodynamics and kinetics, acid-base chemistry, complexation chemistry, precipitation and dissolution, and redox chemistry in water.

    The book is not recommended for an undergraduate level, it is hard to follow for a beginner. It is fairly old, published 1980, so it doesn't have current topics in environmental water chemistry, but it does cover the basics which are important to know.

    Now in an updated second edition, Chemistry Connections: The Chemical Basis Of Everyday Phenomena is an amazing volume with chapters based around answers to questions such as "What causes an egg to crack if it's boiled too rapidly?"; "Why do carbonated drinks go flat as they warm?"; "Why do lightsticks glow?"; "How does a timed-release medicine work?"; and much, much more. The collaborative effort of Kerry K. Karukstis (Professor of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College) and Gerald R. Van Hecke (Professor of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College), Chemistry Connections is an absorbing intermediate to advanced level chemical text that makes learning chemistry a lot of fun in some unique but quite effective ways.

    Overall this book and is fairly successful in its aim of explaining a selection of everyday chemical phenomena in terms accssible to most people. There are a couple of points which really let it down though.
    First, the presentation of the material and the diagrams could be greatly improved. For example, there is a "3-D" structure of EDTA given. In fact, it just seems to be a 2-D Chemdraw diagram pasted in to Chem3D! It gives no sense of how the dispostion of the oxygen and nitrogen atoms allow EDTA to surround the metal centre thus making it an effective metal sequestering agent.
    Second, certain sections go in to extraordinary detail concerning the physical chemistry of certain phenomena. Rather complicated equations and diagrams are presented which don't aid the reader in really understanding conceptualising the processe which are described.
    Third, annoyingly, temperatures are presented only in Fahrenheit. Hello!? Did the authors not consider that they may have readers outside of the US.....

    I found Chemistry Connections very interesting and informative. I am a high school science teacher and I already have a strong background in chemistry. The format presents infomation on each question at multiple levels of sophistication, from introductory information accessible without much knowledge of chemistry to in-depth information on specific molecular structures and interactions. This book would be a great resource for chemistry teachers. My only critisism is that the writing style could be a bit more engaging.

    Chemistry Connections is an excellent, well-written book that I found extremely easy and fun to read. It is a fascinating book for both the layperson and the scientist, presenting explanations of everyday phenomena that all of us have wondered about at one time or another. Things like household cleaners, paper money, seashells, shampoo, and chili pepper are explained on a simplified chemical basis, and then on a more detailed scientific basis.
