Book Description

This book deals with polypyrazolylborates (scorpionates), a class of ligands known since 1966, but becoming rapidly popular with inorganic, organometallic and coordination chemists since 1986, because of their versatility and user-friendliness. They can be readily modified sterically and electronically through appropriate substitution on the pyrazole ring and on boron, and have led to a number of firsts in coordination chemistry (first stable CuCO complex, first monomeric MgR complex, and many other such firsts). Their denticity can range from two to four, their "Bite" can be adjusted, and additional coordinating sites can be added to the pyrazolyl rings. Over 170 different scorpionate ligands are known today, and some are published for the first time in this book.

The author, Swiatoslaw Trofimenko, discovered and developed this ligand system and has written several reviews on the subject. The book is intended as a reference work, placing at the researcher's command practically all of the over 1500 references on the subject up, and into 1999, organized both according to the ligand type and according to the metal or metalloid being coordinated. It acquaints the reader with the special features of this ligand system and permits an assessment of what has been done in a given sub-area, and of which areas remain relatively unexplored. It presents procedures for ligand synthesis, and also covers their use in catalysis and in the modelling of biologically active substances. ... Read more

Book Description

Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Science and Technology "Very well-written and rewarding … an excellent account of the story." —Nature Ten years ago, the discovery of buckminsterfullerene, a previously unknown form of carbon, stunned the scientific community, as much for the discovery itself as for the manner in which it came about. In the words of author Hugh Aldersey-Williams. it was an example of "classic bootleg science. The work was done on the back of other, funded projects, and when time would allow. Yet its commercial implications are probably immense." Now, in a lively account, The Most Beautiful Molecule chronicles the events leading up to this momentous discovery and the ongoing, often frenzied aftermath. Hugh Aldersey-Williams leads us on a thrilling expedition to the very forefront of modern chemistry research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful molecule-The discovery of Bucky Ball
The book is exceedingly lucid in its style and very informative to all seekers of knowledge in the field of Fullerene Chemistry.Fullerene has the distinct place of being the molecule of the last century. Its applications being enormous are dealt with in an excellent way. "Nature"-a lover of symmetry is perhaps manifested as the black beauty in the form of C-60.What an insight the book provides for the prospective researchers in this discipline to seek more only to be found!

4-0 out of 5 stars Field Goal: a pleasantly entertaining chemistry book
Having read many popular science books, this one is above average. All aspects of the discovery were well explained and references are extensive. Comparison with the cold fusion fiasco is appropriate, as the furor over these two scientific episodes were coincident. The petty fights and true believer mentality are present but tempered by appropriate scientific method, which went out the window quickly with cold fusion. Well written and enjoyable. If interested in cold fusion read Gary Taubes' Bad Science ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for presenting trz. mets and orgn. metallics...
Very well written, though some more practice problems would be useful (not to mention a solutions manual...) THe book presents 18 electorn complexes and the like very well and gives many journals as back up references... Gives a great summary of organometallic reactions (CO insertion, Associative, Dissociative, etc) and a really solid and historically grounded intro to the field of catalysis... Clearly written, for the most part, but one section on the Trans effect is a bit ambigous, in the sense that they never really talk about HOW to use it... Sure they mention the idea, but they never address the leaving group... People always confused on that section... So that is my gripe in this otherwise excellent book...

4-0 out of 5 stars A simple guide to organometallic chemistry
This book is a wonderfully simple guide to organometallic chemistry. It is very easy to read making it a quick reference for inquiries. I would highly recommend this book to any beginning organometallic student. ... Read more

Book Description

This book places oxygen on the center stage of chemistry in a manner that parallels the focus on carbon by 19th century chemists. One measure of the significance of oxygen chemistry is the greater diversity of oxygen-containing molecules than of carbon-containing molecules. One of the most important compounds is water, containing the properties of being a unique medium for biological chemistry and life, the source of all the dioxygen in the atmosphere, and the moderator of the earth's climate. Sawyer first introduces the biological origins of dioxygen and role of dioxygen in aerobic biology and oxidative metabolism, and in separate chapters discusses the oxidation-reduction thermodynamics of oxygen species, and the nature of the bonding for oxygen in its compounds. Additional chapters focus on the reactivities of specific oxygen compounds. The book will be of interest to chemists and biochemists, as well as graduate students, life scientists, and medical researchers. ... Read more

Book Description

The growth of inorganic chemistry during the last fifty years has made it almost impossible for the student to assimilate all the factual information available. This book is designed to help the student begin to tackle this task by showing exactly how a chemist uses the Periodic Table to organize and process this mass of information. After opening with a clear description of the quantum mechanical basis on the Periodic Table, the author goes on to illustrate how a modern inorganic chemist uses the Periodic Table to interpret a wide range of chemical phenomena. Rather than giving the descriptive properties he illustrates how the variations are interpreted. Thus he describes vertical trends, horizontal and diagonal trends, and then isoelectronic relationships. The latter provides a basis for developing bonding models which account for the structures and reactivities for molecules. Finally he describes the horizontal and vertical relationships associated with the transition metals, the lanthanides, and the actinides. The basic methodology developed in Essential Trends in Inorganic Chemistry will enable the student to apply these basic principles to other problems and to assimilate more detailed accounts of modern inorganic chemistry in a structured way. ... Book Description

During the last ten years, the International Winterschools on Electronic Properties of New Materials (IWEPNM) have developed into a well-established institution and the alumni form a very active interdisciplinary community which spreads all over the world. Past schools of this series have treated such topics as conducting polymers and high temperature superconductors. The present volume contains the proceedings of the fourth school on fullerenes and fullerene derivatives. Soccer-ball molecules, like C60, C70, etc., have been discovered in the late 1980's and are now regarded as the third allotrope of carbon (in addition to the classic allotropes graphite and diamond). By now, more than ten thousand original papers on fullerene have been published, and the present proceedings give a snap-shot of the development of the field and the state of the art, as reflected by research papers, overviews, and tutorial lectures. Highlights are contributions on fullerene polymers, magnetic properties of fullerene complexes, endohedral compounds, fullerenes with incorporated heteroatoms, and on fullerene nanotubes (single-walled, multi-walled, with open cores or metal-filled), as well as prospects of technological applications (field emission electron guns for flat video displays, fullerene plasma for vapour deposited diamond and SiC film, etc.). ... Book Description

In the last few years, much attention has been given by theoretical chemists to the development of more accurate model functionals and faster computational techniques including excited electronic states. The 8th International Conference on the Applications of Density Functional Theory to Chemistry and Physics, held in Rome, Italy, on 6-10 September 1999, gathered chemists and physicists to present and discuss state-of-the-art methodological developments and applications of density functional theory (DFT) to increasingly complex systems. The scientists shared their knowledge and experience in DFT, enabling them to face the challenges posed by the needs of high level modeling and simulation in their disciplines. The meeting was opened with an exciting lecture delivered by Nobel laureate W Kohn.

The growing use of DFT in studying organic, inorganic and organometallic molecules, clusters and solids provided the basis for the success of the conference, whose main contributions are collected in this invaluable book. ... Read more

Book Description

Transition metal carbonyl clusters are molecules containing three or more metal atoms connected by direct metal-metal bonds to give a three dimensional polyhedral geometry. They continue to be an area of great interest in chemical research, as much for their fascinating structures as for their potential industrial applications conferred by their unique properties.
This highly accessible book introduces the bonding, structure, spectroscopic properties and characterisation of clusters and then explores their synthesis, reactivity, reaction mechanisms and their use in organic synthesis and catalysis. It is intended to accompany final year undergraduate and masters courses teaching the subject as part of an advanced organometallic chemistry module, but will also be a useful reference for those commencing further research on metal carbonyl clusters.
