Book Description

This introduction to descriptive inorganic chemistry is a systematic survey of the chemistry of the elements according to the Periodic Classification.Written for undergraduates and complementary in its approach to conventional inorganic chemistry textbooks, it allows the reader to acquire a firm grasp of the principles that underlie the inorganic substances that can be made, their preparations, structures, chemical reactions and physical properties. The book presents theory as a background to the facts of inorganic chemistry, rather than as an end in itself. It does not concentrate on structural detail or reaction mechanisms but stresses the interplay between thermodynamic and kinetic considerations in understanding stability. The ways in which the various theories of structure and bonding are related are thoroughly dealt with throughout. The approach of this book makes it a useful text for students of any intermediate inorganic chemistry course, as well as a helpful guide for earth and material scientists. ... Read more

Book Description

Heavy water (deuterium oxide) played a sinister role in the race for nuclear energy during the Second World War. It was a key factor in Germany's bid to harness atomic energy primarily as a source of electric power; its acute shortage was a factor in Japan's decision not to pursue seriously nuclear weaponry; its very existence was a nagging thorn in the side of the Allied powers. Books and films have dwelt on the Allies' efforts to deny the Germans heavy water by military means; however a history of heavy water in itself has not been written.

This book fills that gap. It concentrates on the circumstances whereby Norway became the pre-eminent producer of heavy water, and on the scientific role the rare isotope of hydrogren played in the wartime efforts by the Axis and Allied powers alike. Instead of a purely technical treatise on heavy water, the book may better be described as a social history of the subject.

The book covers the discovery and early uses of deuterium before World War Two; its large-scale production by Norsk Hydro in Norway, especially under German control; the French-German race for the Norwegian heavy-water stocks in 1940; its importance for the subsequent German uranium project, including Allied sabotage and bombing of the Norwegian plants; likewise its lesser role in Allied projects, especially, the United States and Canada. The book concludes with an overall assessment of the importance, or perceived importance of heavy water for the German program, which alone staked everything on heavy water in its quest for a nuclear chain reaction. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A really nice and interesting read
Even if the book is easy to read it doesn't mean it is plain. It is interesting and it has a good structur. Some books like this end up as dry catalogues; this one does not. It gave me ideas. It sent out to the bookshelf to check up details. ("Is that really so. Never thought about it.") And if you don't need it, but have interests in the topical neighbourhood; just buy it. It's nice to read in when you are tired of equations or algorithms in chemistry. Or if you end in a good chair with a cold and wants to do something useful in chemistry, which is not too strenuous.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mostly a waste of money
The intention of this book is to provide a description of crystal structures for materials used in materials science and engineering and to emphasize relationships between structures and physical properties and to prepare the reader with the tools to design new materials with improved properties. The book is divided into 4 chapters covering the fundamentals of atoms and molecules, the fundamentals of crystallography, crystal structures, and structural changes of crystals. The intended audience consists of engineers and scientists who work on materials development. Chemists, physicists, and geologists may find useful material in descriptive crystallography and crystal structures, but no attempt has been made to cover other topics (e.g., synthetic chemistry, phase diagrams, nucleation kinetics, magnetic properties, etc.) that would be found in a solid state chemistry text.

Skip the first chapter entirely. Electronic structure and chemical bonding discussion is dated and and often wrong. Some material duplicates that found in physical and inorganic chemistry texts and virtually all such texts give a better exposition than is found here. Molecular orbital theory is presented in a confused and confusing fashion. A final section of this chapter deals with band theory; it contains an amazing number of errors in physics, grammar, and presentation. Readers would do better to go to a number of other books for a more modern, more correct, and clearer treatment of chemical bonding and electronic structure-property relationships.

The remaining chapters in this book are more worthwhile. The fundamentals of crystallography are ably presented. Here, and throughout the remainder of the text, analytical details in the text are supplemented with very good greyscale drawings that emphasize the geometrical aspects of the subject quite nicely. Point group and space group symmetries are presented in a mostly descriptive fashion, with only a brief foray into the more formal aspects of space group theory at the end of the chapter. Students who need more formal training will need to go further than the treatment given in this section. Chapter 3 presents basic crystal structures. This is fairly standard material and is covered in a much deeper and more systematic way in reference works such as Well's classic book, Structural Inorganic Chemistry. Nevertheless, modern graphics allow the reader to see any given structure in more than one way and the authors have often placed alternative presentations (ball-and-stick, polyhedra, space-filling) together in an especially effective way. This is undoubtedly the strongest pedagogical device in this book. The authors have clearly decided that each way of looking at the structure offers its own advantages and by combining modes of presentation they can exploit them all. In chapter 4, the text finishes with a mostly descriptive treatment of structural changes in crystals. Thermodynamic aspects are mentioned in places, though not emphasized. Also, symmetry is used to describe some changes, but readers are not taken through the rigorous physical aspects of the subject. What is imparted to the reader is some feeling for the range of crystal transformations possible and with the illustrations provided, the reader should be able to gain some genuine appreciation for the subject. The materials discussed in this last chapter are of decidedly mineralogical flavor - metallic systems are not discussed.

The English is atrocious. On page 95, for example, there are two inches of text below a figure. This text includes eleven sentences, all of which need some corrections or need to be completely rewritten. My eleven-year-old daughter correctly identified eight obvious errors in this passage in three minutes. In a five-minute random perusal of the text, I spotted the several misspellings and typographical errors that even a spell-checking program should have caught, including "structucral", "thermondymanics", and "primarilly" (sic). While the most egregious errors are concentrated in certain sections of the book, a few errors of grammatical construction find their way into most sections of the text.

Grossly overpriced for a book that suffers from such poor editing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dealing with the Unknowns? Then, this is the book for you.
Invariably, the final semister/quarter of General Chemistry involves determining the ions contained in an unknown solution. This can be a frustrating time for a student, which is in many instances due to the lack of clearly written and understandable laboratory procedures. When I took the class, I thankfully had a savvy professor who utilized this book (the Sixth edition) as the sole laboratory procedures. As a consequence, I did well in the lab (grade was an A) and had a positive experience.
As a teaching assistant in graduate school, I recalled how useful this book was and developed my lectures based on its content (the Chemistry department at that university utilized its own "home grown" book of procedures which were sadly lacking in clarity). This book contains much of the necessary background in reaction kinetics, solution phenomenon, and ionic properties for each group that a student needs to perform and understand the experiments. Two of the most important and indispensable aspects of this book are the flow charts and the questions in each chapter. The flow charts provide a clear, overall picture of the procedures and are easy to follow. I implemented flow charts similar to these in my class with much success. Many of my students copied those flow charts and gave them to classmates in other laboratory sections. The questions were VERY helpful in clarifying how separations of the ions could be successfully achieved and the importance of reaction conditions during these separations. The questions, or variations of them, also made good lab quiz questions. (Hint, hint.) I highly recommend answering the questions prior to performing the lab to give yourself a better idea of what to expect when following the procedures. With this book and good laboratory techniques, you should have no problem acing the Unknowns. ... Read more
