Book Description

The use of CeO2-based materials in catalysis has attracted considerable attention in recent years, particularly in applications like environmental catalysis, where ceria has shown great potential. This book critically reviews the most recent advances in the field, with the focus on both fundamental and applied issues. The first few chapters cover structural and chemical properties of ceria and related materials, i.e. phase stability, reduction behaviour, synthesis, interaction with probe molecules (CO, O2, NO), and metal-support interaction - all presented from the viewpoint of catalytic applications. The use of computational techniques and ceria surfaces and films for model catalytic studies are also reviewed. The second part of the book provides a critical evaluation of the role of ceria in the most important catalytic processes: three-way catalysis, catalytic wet oxidation and fluid catalytic cracking. Other topics include oxidation-combustion catalysts, electrocatalysis and the use of cerium catalysts/additives in diesel soot abatement technology. ... Read more

Book Description

Electrochemistry can be an elegant and essential support to synthetic inorganic chemistry. However, it is often perceived as a difficult technique. This book aims to introduce inorganic chemists to electrochemical investigations in as straightforward a way as possible.

First, the reader is introduced to the theory of electron transfer processes, how they can be studied by various electrochemical techniques, and the practical procedures required. The book then goes on to look extensively, and with numerous illustrations, at the application of the techniques in the multiple fields of inorganic chemistry (including organometallics, coordination compounds, bioinorganics/biomimetics and materials science). Topics covered include: metallocenes; organometallic and coordination complexes; metal complexes of redox active ligands; metal-carbonyl clusters; superconductors; and proteins. Throughout, special attention is paid to the structural effects accompanying the electron transfer processes.

This unique book bridges the gap between undergraduate and research-level electrochemistry books, and will be welcomed as an introduction to electrochemical applications within inorganic chemistry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High quality multi-author contribution
As any serious student who buys advanced science texts knows, edited books with many authors are almost always dismal. Cheetham & Day's book is a rare exception. If you seek a solid state chemistry text, you still can't find anything that is fully satisfactory. An authoritative book that has both the depth and breadth necessary to fill that role still doesn't exist, but this book is one of a couple that are worth buying in the meantime. ... Read more

Book Description

This invaluable book distils the research accomplishments of Professor Fred Basolo during the five decades when he served as a world leader in the modern renaissance of inorganic chemistry. Its primary focus is on the very important area of chemistry known as coordination chemistry.

Most of the elements in the periodic table are metals, and most of the chemistry of metals involves coordination chemistry. This is the case in the currently significant areas of research, including organometallic homogenous catalysis, biological reactions of metalloproteins, and even the solid state extended structures of new materials. In these systems, the metals are of primary importance because they are the sites of ligand substitution or redox reactions. In the solid materials, the coordination number of the metal and its stereochemistry are of major importance.

Some fifty years of research on transition metal complexes carried out in the laboratory of Professor Basolo at Northwestern University is recorded here as selected scientific publications. The book is divided into three different major research areas, each dealing with some aspect of coordination chemistry. In each case, introductory remarks are presented which indicate what prompted the research projects and what the major accomplishments were. Although the research was of the academic, curiosity-driven type, some aspects have proven to be useful to others involved in projects that were much more applied in nature. ... Read more

Book Description

This book illustrates our understanding of the natural world via findings of studies in geochemistry, biochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, environmental chemistry, and other areas, in the context of the general chemistry of the elements. It is divided into two parts: the first provides an account of the Earth - its physics and chemistry, its structure and dynamics - emphasizing the varied roles played by the elements in combination with one another. It demonstrates how elemental chemical behavior dictates both their own environmental significance and the nature of our environment. The second part considers the elements in alphabetical order, and provides a comprehensive reference resource in its own right. Fully cross-referenced, this book is clear, precise, and will have wide appeal as either a supplementary text to an undergraduate inorganic and environmental chemistry course, as well as an essential resource for all those interested in the scientific study of the environment. ...
