Book Description

A lake, as a body of water, is in continuous interaction with the rocks and soils in its drainage basin, the atmosphere, and surface and groundwaters. Human industrial and agricultural activities introduce new inputs and processes into lake systems. This volume is a selection of ten contributions dealing with diverse aspects of lake systems, including such subjects as the geological controls of lake basins and their histories, mixing and circulation patterns in lakes, gaseous exchange between the water and atmosphere, and human input to lakes through atmospheric precipitation and surficial runoff. This work was written with a dual goal in mind: to serve as a textbook and to provide professionals with in-depth expositions and discussions of the more important aspects of lake systems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive AND accessible
Far more comprehensive than most similar books for the Great Lakes and upper midwest.Considerably more accessible than the typical work with this breadth. It will be an excellent field reference for wetlandprofessionals, plant ecologists and allied disciplines. The drawings aregood quality, picking up key differences in appearance among groups such asthe sedges - critical for professional users.I look forward t using it onmy trips to wetlands in the northern midwest as both casual botanist andplant ecologist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-organized, informative, and accessible to all.
The Great Lakes region has some good plant books already in use, noteably Plants of the Chicago Region, the flora bible for many. As a practicing wetland professional I am always on the lookout for references that make my life easier. This book really fits the need, while remaining accessible to non-professionals.By providing wetland habitat descriptions, as well as solid information on each family and species, the book really adds to the discussion of the Great Lakes flora.Illustrations in the book are detailed enough to serve as a diagnostic tool, enabling the careful reader to separate similar species readily by eye, as well as by technical detail, a feature lacking in some other regional plant reference books. ... Book Description

A result of the Global Geological Lake Basin (GGLAB) study, this book is a concise summary of the information available on a global spectrum of lacustrine deposits--looking in particular at paleoenvironmental aspects. It will assess, for every geological time window, key lacustrine sequences worldwide in the form of short summaries of specific deposits. For the first time, a common language will be defined to describe these deposits. The information will allow correlation with marine deposits, define paleo-rainfall patterns and help calibrate paleoclimate parameters. ... Read more

Book Description

This volume combines articles on shallow lakes from leading European scientists in limnology. It covers aspects of the dynamics of macrophytes, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos, nutrient loading, littoral--pelagic interactions, and sediment--water interactions, as well as lake management. The object was not to separate theory (e.g. modelling) and management in order to generate new theories for the understanding of shallow lake ecosystems. The volume provides a comprehensive overview of the ecology of shallow lakes, a lake type which differs in prominent ways from deeper lakes. The broad spectrum of issues may also reflect the spectrum of interested readers such as limnologists, water engineers, hydrobiologists, who will be informed on a high level about new developments. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking book for teachers
John Janovy Jr. has captured the wonder and passion of following one's bliss. His book is an exploration and illustration of the phrase made famous by Joseph Campbell and of James Hillman's idea that within each of us resides the "acorn" of what we are destined to become. How better to explain the fascination Janovy's young students find in parasites too small to be seen without a microscope and too discounted to draw dollars for those who study them? Janovy celebrates his students' questions, sacrifices, and achievements. He must be a wonderful teacher! And this is a book that teachers will want to read, particularly those who seriously reflect on how it is that a student's interest gets captured. It isn't that Janovy has the answers. It's that he raises such interesting questions. ... Read more
