3-0 out of 5 stars Cute but don't regard it as your bible of companionship
I found that though this book offered some cute lighthearted insights to relationship astrology, they missed the boat on facts and truly diagnosing a relationship's merit with astrology. There is no mention of the idea that aspects or other parts of the couple's charts will have any importance in the relationship chart, which is simply not true.

3-0 out of 5 stars sexual meanings of planets
This book explains 144 patterns of Mars/Venus combination in each sign. The focus is on their sexual implication. Their interpretation is quite detailed and each pattern is supported by a case study of celebrity's experience. Hence, I think that this book can be of great use, if you are interested in the sexual meanings of planets, which are usually overpassed in other astrological books.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mars Venus Affair: Astrology's Sexiest Planets
I loved this book. It's a great icebreaker -- fun and great for parties. I've got other Birthdate and astrological characteristics books, but this one is the most fun. The Perrys' wit is tongue-in-cheek and I can tell they're just the kind of people I'd like to invite to a dinner party. I'll be looking forward to their next endeavor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining!
I think The Mars Venus Affair is a really fun book. I don't know much about astrology but you really don't need to in order to enjoy this book. It's written in plain language and tells you which Mars-Venus combination you have and how it can influence your sex life. It was fun to read the celebrity biographies that describe each of the 144 categories. There were several celebrities I already knew something about, like Marilyn Monroe and Greta Garbo, and there were others I hadn't heard of. But they were all very interesting. It's kind of neat thinking you have the same combination of Mars and Venus as Marilyn Monroe or Greta Garbo.

As much as I enjoyed this book at home, the real fun started when I took it to work and it got passed around the office. It really got people talking and giggling. It's probably a good book to have at a party to break the ice, or maybe for a bridal shower.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why is this listed under astronomy?
Why is this book listed under astronomy/Mars?

This is a book about as-trol-o-gy (a made up subject with no basis in reality) not as-tron-o-my (about reality).

If you're into astrology--fine. But if you're interested in astronomy, don't spend your money on this one! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Chronology of Martian Life (As Seen From Earth)
True to is title, this book is entirely devoted to life on the red planet, but does not restrict itself to the modern scientific data. Instead, the text chronologically explores the evolution of the idea of Martian life in the last few centuries.

Mostly based on the scientific results of each period (except the last part), the author starts his expose with the knowledge acquired before the space age. The 'canali' of Schiaparelli turned into canals with Percival Lowell, which lead to the conclusion that a Martian civilization did exist. The debate raged for decades, until technological improvements finally killed the civilized Martians. Mars was a dead planet after all.

Then came the space age, the Soviet and American probes were sent to Mars, confirming Mars as a dead planet... but revealing a once warmer world, with rivers. And if Viking failed to detect life (did it?), what about extinct life?

The third part follows with the possibilities of fossil life and the famed Martian meteorite ALH84001. With a comparison of the origins of life on Earth, the chapter tries to deduce where life could be hiding now.

The final part leaves the area of science and enters the realm of conspiracies and telepathy, Cydonians, UFOs, movies and books. After all, they are all manifestations of Martian life, at least in our culture.

Quite easy to read, this book effectively covers the 'life' subject, and, as a bonus, provides an interesting look at the evolution or scientific knowledge. However, you won't learn much about the red planet, since the astronomical and geological data are quite rare, and, unfortunately, badly documented, contradictory or even false.

For a complete coverage of ALH84001, you may be interested in Donald Goldsmith's "The Hunt For Life On Mars" (1998, ISBN 0452278554). ... Read more

Book Description

This comprehensive set of four CD-ROMs provides a thorough guide to the mission of the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS). This historic program is documented in NASA reports and mission images - there are over 1820 images and 87 video clips reproduced here. Every aspect of the program is covered.

This CD-ROM set has over 11,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems, and Reader software is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into our reproduction, providing a complete full-text index. This enables the user to search all the files on the disk at one time for words or phrases using just one search command! The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!

Mars Global Surveyor became the first successful mission to the red planet in two decades when it launched November 7, 1996, and entered orbit on September 12, 1997. After a year and a half trimming its orbit from a looping ellipse to a circular track around the planet, the spacecraft began its prime mapping mission in March 1999. It has observed the planet from a low-altitude, nearly polar orbit over the course of one complete Martian year, the equivalent of nearly two Earth years. Mars Global Surveyor recently completed its primary mission on January 31, 2001, and is now in an extended mission phase. The mission has studied the entire Martian surface, atmosphere, and interior, and has returned more data about the red planet than all other Mars missions combined. Among key science findings so far, Global Surveyor has taken pictures of gullies and debris flow features that suggest there may be current sources of liquid water, similar to an aquifer, at or near the surface of the planet. Magnetometer readings show that the planet's magnetic field is not globally generated in the planet's core, but is localized in particular areas of the crust. New temperature data and closeup images of the Martian moon Phobos show its surface is composed of powdery material at least 1 meter (3 feet) thick, caused by millions of years of meteoroid impacts. Data from the spacecraft's laser altimeter have given scientists their first 3-D views of Mars' north polar ice cap.

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed, searched, or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. This book-on-a-disc set makes a great reference work and educational tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required!
For me, the CD contains required Mars research information as a sci-fi writer, which previously took weeks to months to gather. It is in a somewhat awkward PDF format, but it works! The format has it's conveniences, like having needed references available right on your PC. Some of the data I had never seen before, and some is a bit technical, which means just something new to learn. If you're new to reading some of this sort of data, it will be rough going in certain parts. Would have given anything to have had this in the days of my research instead of using using 28k / 56k modem, and NASA public information packages, required to get me through my first sci-fi novel. For whatever reason you feel you need a great collection of essential Mars research facts, this is it! It seems to be required reading these days for writing sci-fi about Mars. Ronald Reed Jackson

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of NASA documents for serious enthusias
World Spaceflight News has done serious spaceflight enthusiasts a big favor with this compiliation of over 10,000 pages of NASA documents related to Mars flights. Unlike most space-related CD that are heavy on multimedia and fancy interfaces but lacking in information, this CD is pure meat......a virtual library of documents, many dificult to impossible to obtain outside of large university libraries, jammed into a single disk. The CD consists of a score of NASA documents, some quite technical, on recent Mars probes in Adobe PDF format. Additionally, there are image galleries (also unfortunately in PDF format rather than JPEGs, which prevent transfer to photo editing programs for cropping and printing)of about 250 photos from Viking and Mars Pathfinder and a few Hubble and Global Surveyor photos as well.

The bulk of the CD consists of lots of NASA documents related to the Viking, Mars Pathfinder/Global Surveyor, and the ill-fated Mars Polar Lander/Climate orbiter programs (the CD was produced prior to the loss of both spacecraft). Documents related to the now-cancelled Mars 2001 programs are also included. Especially valuable are the Viking, Mars Pathfinder/Global Surveyor and Mars 98 press kits, the out-of print NASA history of the Viking project, "On Mars", the Mariner 4 final project report, and the complete abstracts (many one or two page mini-articles with photos)of the 1999 Mars conference which details current scientific thinking on Martian geology, climatology, and potential for life.

Reproduction quality is generally comparable to the original documents (although many original NASA reports, especially early ones, were printed rather poorly to begin with, while more recent ones are of high quality)and the photos in the image gallery are excellent.

Although many of the documents are available on the Internet, many are not, and the sheer sizes of these documents could take a long time to download over ordinary phone lines; here they can load in seconds.

While I would not recommend this collection for those who are only casually interested in Mars exploration, for serious enthusiasts of space, historians and potential authors, this collection is invaluable if not essential. WSN deserves high praise for bringing us this collection, and one hopes they continue archiving and preserving official NASA history at an affordable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of NASA documents
World Spaceflight News has done a great service for serious hardcore space enthusiasts as well as for historians in releasing this CD-ROM collection of NASA documents. Unlike most space-related CDs, this is not heavy on multimedia and sparse on information, instead it is a virtual library of NASA reports and documents, loaded with information, some quite technical. The bulk of the CD is several thousand pages of official NASA documents related to recent Mars exploration reproduced in Adobe PDF format. Especially useful are the press kits for the Viking, Pathfinder, Mars Global Surveyor and the ill-fated Mars 98 projects. Also included are the official NASA history of the Viking Project, "On Mars", and the complete abstracts of a 1999 Mars conference. There are many additional documents, including quite technical documents related to the Mars 98 projects. Topping it off is a series of PDF image galleries of about 250 images from Viking, Pathfinder, and Global Surveyor.

Reproduction quality is fairly comparable to the original NASA documents (some of which were poorly printed to begin with while others are of excellent quality) and quite suitable for printing if you are willing to burn through many printer cartridges. Many if not most of the documents are out of print and very hard to obtain, although some can be downloaded from the Web. However, the enormous file sizes of some of these documents would take hours to download unless you have access to T-1 lines, while this CD allows you to access the documents in seconds.

While I would not recommend this CD to those with only a casual interest in Mars exploration, after all, NASA documents are rather dry, this is an invaluable resource for serious space enthusiasts, as well as for authors and historians studying the history of Mars exploration.

World Spaceflight News has done an invaluable service in making these documents available and one hopes that they continue with additional CDs. ... Read more
