Book Description This book has firmly established a new and vital area not only for pure mathematics but also for applications to economics and engineering. A sound knowledge of linear algebra and introductory real analysis should provide readers with sufficient background for this book. There is also a guide for the reader who may be using the book as an introduction, indicating which parts are essential and which may be skipped on a first reading. Reviews (1)

Book Description Reviews (3)
In the second graph theory course that I took (to refresh and refine my understanding), the professor chose the Schaum text solely for its low cost--he thought he was doing the students a service. Hardly. No thought whatsoever has been put into the readability of this book. The tiny dark-grey font on light-grey paper is a simple enough design flub that makes reading past even two or three pages at a time almost unbearable. Defining terms is seen as a chore to be compacted--a single page at the beginning of each chapter might try to define 10-15 terms, just to get them out of the way. It becomes a mess of bold print that the reader is forced to continually return to because the definitions come with no context nor examples by which to remember them. In the end, the reader realizes that 2/3 of the book is just list after list of badly-worded questions following under-scripted lessons. Look, it's not even worth writing any more about, the text frustrates me so much. There's only two other reviews on this page, and I'd place money on them being written by the author himself. Save yourself the $$$ and the hassle, and just go buy Wilson's book. Trust me.

Book Description This self-contained book deals with important applications to signal processing, communications engineering, computer graphics algorithms, qubit algorithms and chaos theory, and is aimed at a broad readership of graduate students, practitioners, and researchers in applied mathematics and engineering. The book is also useful for other mathematicians with an interest in the interface between mathematics and communication theory. Reviews (6)
1- The book covers the theory of wavelets from the point of view of operators and functional analysis and will appeal to a growing number of pure as well as applied mathematicians interested in the subject. 2- The writing of the book is very appealing: every chapter starts by a tutorial that gives motivation as well as intuition. It is then followed by a very clean mathematical development of the subject, together with many examples, figures, and applications from physics and engineering. A set of nice problems is provided at the end of each chapter. Thus this book can be used as a graduate textbook or for mathematical seminars in mathematics departments. 3- This book can even be used by experts in wavelet theory for learning about recent developments and new perspectives from operator theory and functional analysis. I highly recommend this book.
I look forward to learning a lot from it.
The reader will find many intriguing threads connecting wavelets to other parts of mathematics, including a wavelet "index theorem", quantum computing, the ubiquitous Cuntz C*-algebras and, of course, spectral theory. The graphics are excellent. I look forward to learning a lot from it. ... Read more

Book Description Reviews (11)
I can't recommend West's text enough. It is modern and well written, and it serves as a great introduction to a wonderful field of mathematics.
Don't let other reviews fool you. This book does an excellent job covering the material at hand, especially given the task West set out to achieve. The book basically stands alone thanks to thorough appendices and a fair amount of examples, plus lots of problems (mostly proofs). Because this material is proof-based, I cannot suggest that this book could stand alone, but that someone else should review problems and such. When I first was reading this book, I ignored the appendices, and that was my downfall. Once I started using all the tools in this book, things started coming together. Because of the intricate design, I would recommend this book only to people who are serious about a thorough introduction to graph theory. That is, actually proving many of the theorems that play a central role in this introduction. For a simple introduction to concepts, I would recommend Trudeau's book, "Introduction to Graph Theory," which is a good read and introduces a few of the ideas and definitions of graph theory, but does not focus on proofs. My only major quarrel with this book is that it is completely void of color! This would be EXTREMELY useful in this book because many of the diagrams are complicated and different color labels would make things much clearer (instead of bolding lines and such). The increased price of the book would certainly be worth the clarity from color. There are also some typos throughout the book, but none too major (that have been noticed). Overall, I would highly recommend this book over any other, but consider waiting until an edition with color comes out.
I used "Google" to find topics in Graph theory and could understand the topics but could'nt understand what this guy wrote. ... Read more

However, the disappointment lay in the number of mistakes that are made. Most of them are very subtle, and are only discovered if you go through the text carefully, or try to implement an algorithm based on the example pseudocode. In most cases it is the pseudocode that has gone wrong. If you are only a beginner programmer, then it will be difficult to sift through the poorly written pseudocode. On the other hand, a seasoned programmer will have no problems. In summary - a top class book marred by some mistakes. If you know how to program, then this book is for you. Beginner programmers will be slowed somewhat by the poor pseudocode.

Book Description This powerful study tool covers difference calculus, sum calculus, ifference equations and more with many examples of their applications. Ideal for solo study or as a supplement to a course, it clearly explains principles and theorems and gives definitions, then takes students through problems and their step-by-step solutions. This provides firm footing and excellent preparation for real-life problems and school examinations. Reviews (1)
The problem I have with it is that not all the problems have answers to them. The explanations are great, but I want to make sure I understand it. There doesn't seem to be a pattern regarding which ones have answers in the back. You just have to try the problem, then look in the back to see if that one was answered. I would still recommend this to help reinforce what you learn in class or just to refresh your memory. ... Read more

In this short book the first two chapters contain a very clear development of the theory of simple continued fractions, culminating in a proof of Lagrange's theorem on the periodicity of the continued fraction representation of quadratic surds. Chapter three presents Khinchins beautiful and original work on the measure theory of continued fractions. The proofs of the theorems in this chapter are also entirely elementary.
The book is brilliant and necessary for understanding continued fractions, but can't stand alone without supplemental material unless one is a professional mathematician. Khinchin frequently employs contrapositive proof formats, and there are occasional translation errors from Russian. The errors range from minor (awkward usage) to major (in one place, the translation is "negative" when it should be "non-negative", which confused me for half a day). ... Read more

Then he describes the role of the Greek mathematicians Plato and Euclid, and the Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci in the history of phi, together with the geometrical and arithmetical wonders connected to this number. One example of the wonders is the relation between the Fibonacci sequence and phi. The Fibonacci sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ... is defined as a series of numbers in which each term is the sum of the two preceding terms. The ratio of successive numbers of this sequence approaches phi as we go farther and farther down the sequence. Next come the topics of phi found in nature and used in arts. The logarithmic spiral, which goes hand in hand with the Golden Radio, appears in the sunflower, the flight of a falcon, galaxies, etc. The author's study of many historical attempts to disclose the Golden Ratio in various works of art, pieces of music and poetry comes to the conclusion that ... (I have to refrain from writing the ending of the "detective story"). In the final chapter Livio considers the question: What is the reason that mathematics and numerical constants like phi play such a central role in topics ranging from fundamental theories of the universe to the stock market? Noting that the discussion about this question can fill the entire volume, the author gives a brief (but very understandable) description of the modified Platonic view and the natural selection interpretation. He also presents his personal opinion, which adopts complementarity of the above two views. This chapter whets readers' appetite for a possible next book on this topic to be written by Livio. I strongly recommend "The Golden Ratio" to scientists, artists and laypersons that are interested in the wonders of numbers and mathematics and in their relations to arts and nature.
Writing about science in a way that is both knowledgeable and understandable for the common reader is an infamous hurdle, but Livio leaps over it with the greatest of ease, giving clear explanations of every potentially difficult matter and providing the scientific proofs in the appendices, for those more mathematically inclined. Overall, though, it is the great humanity of Livio's worldview that shines through the book and makes it, at least for me, one of the most memorable reads of the year.
It is little wonder that such numbers as the Golden Ratio were considered magical. The never ending, never repeating number that cannot ever be expressed as a fraction has an uncanny tendency to show up in the oddest places, not only galactic structure and nautilus shells, but in plant parts and composition of paintings and music. Unfortunately magical numerology can lead to far-fetched relationships, as to the so-called number of the beast (666), and to academicism in art. Just because the Golden Ratio results in a pleasing relationship in a composition we are not tied to always measure art on how well it fits that ratio! Livio has illuminated the history of the Golden Ratio in such a way that much of the associated themes can be understood by the reasonably educated laymen. While some of the book can be tough sledding for most of us non-mathematicians, the gist is available to all with some effort. Read this book to learn about the history of interpretation and misinterpretation of mathematical concepts.
Livio explains the original formulation of this number by Euclid and proceeds to address the various times in history in which it may have been employed by architects, artists and musicians. I think this is a really good book if you're interested in reading about the most "irrational of all irrational numbers".
