Well written and very practical
I've been a Test Engineer for 13 years and take it from me, this book is so close to real life situation. It obviously written by people who practice the art of Test Engineering. I wish that I had this book in my very 1st year. This is the bible for every TE.

A truly practical book
Most texts on testing seem to be written for the design engineer. They talk a lot about the fault model, the doping process, how the pattern generation algorithms are not perfect...It's like teaching Chemistry at a cooking class.
But don't get me wrong, this is not a cookbook. It does teach a fair amount of "Chemistry". But it's able to show the reader why the theories are relevant and how to apply them. The solutions are presented in the context of the problems, not the other way around, like most text books.

Test engineers need this one
I used the 2nd edition of this book while in engineering labs at Clemson and now use the 2nd and now 3rd edition in my test engineering work. I find myself being able to go into it and pulling out enough information to get me going on a new test design project. The stuff on uncertainty cannot be found elsewhere and useful. One of the better real-world texts.

Definitely worth having
This is a great book. I use it mostly to look up techniques while I'm working (certain pages are well dog-eared), but when I've read more, I've found it very helpful. I wish I'd had it when I was a student. Teachers should also find it really useful for helping students get the math refresher they usually need for college science classes. There are a couple of errors - you can download the corrections from the publishers website (where it says the mistakes are only in the first printing) - but in a book like this that's hard to avoid, and there are actually very few. Most of the book is really terrific, and surprisingly entertaining, especially the cartoons.

Same material in 1988 edition!
For those of us looking for new up-to-date technical information in the process field we will have to go elsewhere. This book contains the same basic information as in the first edition. While it has some good material for learning beginning theoretical process control at the technical level it is a waste of money if you are interested in modern technology.

A good book for beinners but take a look at your course req
This was one of the first books i read on process control.Whether or not you should buy the book would depend on what your course demands.

The beauty of the book lies in its lucidity which shows the authors understanding of all the sensors and instruments...the book stresses on the principles of working of all the instruments. i understood every single transducer I learnt about in the book.Another plus point of the book is that it is self-sufficient, in that you dont have to take another book while reading this one.It starts off by discussing all that you need to know about OP-Amp circuits for process control and even digital electronics.

Great book for upto intermediate Labview Programmers
I like this book a lot. In first few chapters it includes a short but enough introduction about Labview. It is easy to read and to follow.

This is not a magical book which can teach you LabView from zero level to advanced one quickly. Don't expect miracles. However, if you are intended to perform DAQ with LabView, I higly recommend you to read this book with some other LabView books. This book does not go into very detail of DAQ VI's but give you some insight which may be the best for the beginning but not enough for advanced applications.

Don't forget, it takes time and effort to perform a good job for your application.

GUI Design for Test and Measurement
As a long-time LabVIEW programmer, I know how easy it is to create rich, graphical user interfaces with LabVIEW. I also know how frustrating it is to have an end user sit down in front of my LabVIEW masterpiece and not have a clue of what to do. In his easy to read style, Dave explains effective user interface design and how to apply it to test and measurement.

Good Book if You're Beyond Basics
I've been programming for about two years. Most of my training in Labview is by trial-and-error and reading the examples that came with Labview. I've written over 3 dozen programs for my present employer.

As for books, I have many of them. This book in particular, is aimed to the advanced user. Don't expect to learn how to write programs with this book. For a graphical programming language, this book has very little graphics or pictures.

What you can expect is to hone your applications so that they are easier for the end user, easier to maintain and separates 'working' VIs from 'expert' VI. Many little tricks in this book (such as setting preferences, using state machines, and yes, Active X) will make your applications run faster with less overhead.

If you're looking for a book to show you more programming techniques, with actual examples, I'd opt for Essick's "Advanced LabVIEW Labs" (an intermediate book) or Johnson's "LabVIEW Graphical Programming" (more advanced). If you're looking for ways to separate yourself from programmers that make 'working' VIs, then this book by Bitter et al. is for you.

Great info on several topics
This is an excellent intro into some of the advanced features of LV. It covers basic features, state machines (one of the best chapters), application structure, drivers, exception handling, multithreading, OOP, and unfortunately Active X (chpaters to skip). The info is excellent, and I think it is well worth the cost and time to read. It also comes with a great CD.

The only bad part is more than 20% of the book is devited to Active X. This is a huge kick in the pants to platform independence. While I am working on NT (by force, not by choice) I try to avoid any technonogy that supports ... you know, the M word.

An excellent book for advanced LabVIEW users
An excellent book for LabVIEW program designers and programmers! Especially for LabVIEW users with several years experience and try to learn more new software techniques. The authors introduced many concepts and techniques in C/C++ such as ActiveX, COM, DCOM etc. The OOA, OOD and design pattern are also combined with LabVIEW programming. There are many useful examples in the book. I recommend this book to all LabVIEW users.

not very helpful
I didn't find this book helpful at all. It is neither for beginners nor for advanced Labview programmers. If you are somewhere in middle and want to enjoy reading a book about labview like reading a fiction, this may be the right book for you.

If you are really looking for a book which you really need to learn something about Labview, this book is not that one. Continue your search!

Not really impressed..
I didn't really find this book all that useful in learning labview, in fact national instruments free seminars/adverts were much better. The manual also seems to help more. If you are going to use the latest labview 7, a lot of this info will be superfluos due to the wizards. I am however no labview expert, but i would defintely recommend checking this out in a bookshop first, as i was disapointed.

The only LabVIEW book you'll ever need
I've purchased all three editons of Gary Johnson's LabVIEW book and haven't been disappointed yet. This is one of those rare books that lives up to its hype. The writing is clear and engaging, without condescending to the more advanced user. If you're using or learning LabVIEW, check this book out.

Great Book, Especially for the Working Person
For those of you who do not have this book, this book is one of the top Labview books available. It goes very quickly through the basics, and focuses more on building actual applications in Labview. Many pointers on how to maximize resources are through out this book. It saved me many hours of trial and error. The book reads as if an articulate person is speaking to you. Very no nonsense.

For example, there's a comprehensive chapter on actually developing a Labview VI for use. It goes through the requirements, the development (internally and also the user interface) and the release of the VI. Further, it has a nice section on DAQ.

This book is more or less a rehash of the old book, with some upgrades, but for those who don't have the old one, read it's reviews. I wasn't terribly disappointed with the omission of Labview 6i stuff, since the content extended beyond it. You'll be making a good investment in this book.

Not much different than the previous version
I gave this book 3 stars because it's still a useful resource for those who are interested in LabVIEW. However, I wouldn't recommend buying it if you have the previous version and don't wish to pursue the creation a real time LabVIEW application on an embedded Linux platform. There really is little, if any, mention of some of the new, interesting features of LabVIEW 6 which to me was a major let down, such as control references and the like. The examples included with the book on the CD Rom aren't incredibly useful or new for that matter, but could be of some benefit to a new user. Overall, if you're new to LabVIEW and have never seen the previous version of this book I'd recommend it, but if you have the older version I wouldn't be too inclined to recommend it for anything rather than the detailed information in the latter chapters regarding LabVIEW RT and Linux. ... This book leaves something to be desired
I have been reading this book for a class. I must say that this book is not as detailed as I would like it to be. I am an engineer and my expectation was that when a statement is made details would be provided to backup the statements. And the figures in the book are not easy to understand quickly. There must be a better book out there.

Is Anything Better Out There?
This book has been required for a Dimensional Metrology class at Palomar College for the last ten years.This course is required for students seeking an AA in Quality Assurance Technology, or Quality certification.Though not a definitive guideline for the science of measurement, it seems to be the best text available.

Although there is an abundance of illustrations most are outdated and from the sixties. The field of Metrology has changed substantially and this text has not been revised accordingly.The questions and answer choices that follow each chapter are ambiguous in nature and need to reflect current issues. I would like to see more alignment with the ASQ CMI body of knowledge, inclusion of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and revision of the statistics chapter to include Gage R&R and various continuous improvement tools (cause and effect diagrams, run charts, process capability, trend charts, check sheets, etc.).The QS 9000 guidelines and newer calibration standards should also be referenced.

This one book covers alot of ground in enought detail to keep most of us happy...I havent found a single source which covers all the main bases this well.

Informative book - wider than title implies
This book not only covers temperature trace ability but also covers subjects like how a temperature sensor's construction will affect the long-term stability of measurements. However information about how the associated measurement equipment is constructed and how it affects the long-term temperature measurement stability is not thoroughly discussed.

Some parts of the trace ability aspect are limited, for example, how error tolerance build up affects the finial specs, which can be claimed.

Great companion volume to Applied Life Data Analysis
I agree with the previous reviewer that this is the definitive classic in accelerated life testing. It's a great companion volume to Dr. Nelson's "Applied Life Data Analysis" which remains one of the best reliability textbooks ever written. I have noticed that all major reliability and accelerated testing programs use this book as their main reference - proof of the books usefulness. My only compaint is with the publishers for the steep price - now that they're bringing out a lower cost version of Applied Life Data Analysis, I hope they'll bring out a low-cost or paperback version of this classic as well.

best statistical account of accelerated testing
Nelson is a private consultant who has worked on countless practical problems in reliability from his consulting practice and previous employment at General Electric. He is an excellent lecturer and writer. His earlier book "Applied Life Data Analysis" was considered to be one of the best texts on reliability.

This book is very thorough in its treatment of all aspects of accelerated testing and is filled with many good references. Nelson carefully defines the mathematical models which consist of two components, (1) an acceleration function which describes how the mean lifetime changes as a function of the acceleration factor and (2) a probability distribution that explains the random variability of outcomes at each acceleration factor. A particular mean function could be the Arrhenius relationship and the probability distribution could be exponential. Hence there is not a single Arrhenius acceleration model but rather an Arrhenius-exponential, an Arrhenius-lognormal or an Arrhenius-Weibull model. The book is filled with interesting theory and examples. Nelson provides excellent practical guidance based on his wealth of experience. ... Read more
