5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding & Comprehensive Introduction
Clear yet rigorous approach to a complex topic. This book provides a strong foundation for the equations of fluid motion that is quite approachable. It organizes well Navier Stokes to other equations such as Euler's and Bernoulli's. A useful text for undergraduate engineering students.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is very popular to undergraduate engr. students
This book has been used by several universities and adopted as the course text for several years by the US Naval Academy. It is written to strengthen student's background in applied math, and has many clever example problems. The degree of difficulty is slightly greater than most other texts on the subject but it is justified in that the aim is to improve student's math prowess. ... Read more

Book Description

Building on the success of five previous editions, this new sixth edition continues to present a unified approach to the study of the behavior of structural members and the development of design and failure criteria. The text treats each type of structural member in sufficient detail so that the resulting solutions are directly applicable to real-world problems. New examples for various types of member and a large number of new problems are included. To facilitate the transition from elementary mechanics of materials to advanced topics, a review of the elements of mechanics of materials is presented along with appropriate examples and problems. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars What is the point?
This book treats mechanics of materials from a pedogogy that is thirty years old. Withthe advent of computer methods no one uses these solutions. Also, the approch is so rudementary that it limits one from reading any current treatment of the subject. Say something about stress functions, or more on inelasticity. If you want a refernce get Roarks if you want to learn something useful get Shames and Cozzarelli's book

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away!
One of the most frustrating, useless, and difficult textbooks I have had in 20 years of school. I'm startled to see favorable reviews of this textbook as it is completely unhelpful as a reference or educational tool for anyone actually trying to learn Mechanics of Materials. The examples are difficult to follow. The text is overbearing. The figures are confusing. An awful textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A keeper
One of the best reference books to have on the shelf, although some others may be better as course textbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
This book is a text book for courses in advanced mechanics at many universities. It retains the strength of materials approach, rather than that of the theory of elasticity, so it is easy to follow for anyone with a basic background in mechanics. This book is also a good reference with most of the important topics being covered. A good purchase for anyone interested in mechanics of materials. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful beyond measure
All of these books titled "Problems and Solutions on (subject): Major American Universities Ph.D. Qualifying Questions and Solutions" are invaluable tools for a physics graduate student, in my experience.

One criticism: The index for this particular book is nonexistent. I am writing my own in my copy of the book.

If you are a student in physics, I suggest that you get your hands on these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely wonderful
The entire series is my savior. Each volume covers the material needed in the junior/senior level of physics. It truly has an emense selection of problems. I found that nearly all of my homework/exams were either exactly the same or merely a slight variation from one contained. I also have yet to find a single error, not even a sign error. One important thing is that it does need to be a supplement, as formulas are sometimes used without explicit reference to why. In general the reasons need to be found in an assigned text. My only gripe (and it is minor) is with the index...the index does not, in general, lead one to a relevent problem. For example, uses of Biot/Savart to solve this problem or that... The reason this is not a serious problem is that each topic has so many variations on the method/technique that it is simple enough to find at least a couple that are completely relevent. (given you know which section to look in)

4-0 out of 5 stars This book was excellent preparation for the qualifying exam
Although I do not attend one of the schools from which these questions were taken, I found it an excellent review tool nonetheless. It has a great variety of problems, and the solutions include all major steps for the most part. Sometimes steps are skipped, but if this book is used to supplement any standard text on the subject it can be a very powerful and useful tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introductory fluid mechanics book out there!!
Whether you are a student, or actually working in the field, this book is a great first step in fluid mechanics. Tons of problems and good examples in every chapter make this book not only easy to understand, but somewhat enjoyable too!!! You don't get that very often! If you have problems with this book, like 4.0 boy below, then there is obvious problems with your studying habits. Should have gone to Purdue University!!
Good buy I would recommend it to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars There has to be something better.
I used this book for a fluid mech course and I thought this book is terrible. The derivations of the equations are though but that doesn't make up for what this book lacks. The problems are quite difficult since the material covered in the chapters doesn't match what the questions ask. I don't expect a textbook to entertain me but this one put me to sleep a lot. There are (literally) hundreds of references to video clips demonstrating different topics covered but they weren't put on the included CD. And speaking of the CD, it is completely worthless. Don't even bother wasting your time looking at it since it contains very little useful information. There are a few more detailed explanations of a few of the topics in a few chapters but that is it. There is no real meat there. I gave this book 2 stars only because I did like the thoroughness of the derivations other than that this book is a waste of your time and money. And if one opinion may not count out of a class of 35 about half of us hated the book (it was doubtful the other half had even read it). If you have to use this book, good luck.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Average Book
After reading a few chapters from this book and compared it to other Fluid Mech books like Frank M. White's Fluid Mechanics and Fundamental of Fluid Mechanics by Munson, Young & Okiishi, I would say this book doesn't provide enough explanation to the various topics in Fluid Mechanics which the other authors did.
If you are the type who prefers to read something lighter, this book will be suitable for you. But for those who prefer to read up & learn more about Fluid Mechanics, Frank White will be a better choice although beginners who are new to Fluid Mech will find White's book a bit hard to understand.
Personally, I would say the best Fluid Book i have ever read will be Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics by Young, Munson & Okiisi. Please refer to the review of that book for more info

5-0 out of 5 stars I still refer to it 5 years later....
I used this book as an undergrad and found the many examples very helpful in doing the homework problems. I still refer to this textbook quite often as an aeronautical engineer. If you've had a few math courses it isn't too challenging. It is a very good explanation of the basics!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Textbook, A Great Reference Book
This is a fabulous textbook that I refer to frequently in my work. It presents a very difficult subject in a logical way and lays a solid foundation for graduate study. I think some students have trouble following the discussion because they don't have a good grasp of the math needed (Calculus and DiffEqs). I like the fact that this book is not cluttered with information you can find in a Math book. It makes it a good reference book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars essential reading for any theoretical chemist
I bought this book as a supplement in my graduate stat mech course. I found that McQuarrie, while thorough (in a good way), lacks chapters on thermodynamics and starts off at a high level. Plischke, while encyclopedic, and equally modern, lacks much of the explanation and "physical insight" found in Chandler's presentation. I'm enjoying the text and working through the problems (get the solutions manual, even though its incomplete). There is a lot to be learned from this well written text. It is certainly a valuable resource to any physical scientist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
A clear, concise explanation of statistical mechanics. Some people may complain about the "concise" part--in many cases, mathematical exercises are left as exercises to the student. However, this practice allows the reader to really understand the material by doing, not just reading. I learned stat mech for the first time from this book, and only examined other texts (mcquarrie or hill) afterwards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caltech Graduate Student
This was a great book. It covered the important material and left out all of the extra garbage that most books carry on for pages about. The presentation was done using clear mathematics and modern, easily followed notation. The book is short making it practical to actually read the entire book if you are extremely busy. We used the book in conjunction with Hill. I don't recommend Hill because it is hard to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only modern stat mech book
The best part of this book is that it is modern. You have chapters on Monte Carlo simulations, the Ising model, and more. You don't get long chapters on the partition function of an ideal gas, for example. The bad part about this book is that it is not immediately transparent if you're reading stat mech for the first time. I like it more the more I know about stat mech, but it's not a good beginner's book, and I think it's better to have another book with it - maybe Hill or McQuarrie - since it's not really that long either. Still, recommended (get the soln. manual too) with these caveats.

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern and concise approach to the subject.
This is a clearly exposed text on Statistical Mechanics, with a very modern approach. I find the problems particularly interesting (look for the Solution Manual of this title). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as supplementary book on the subject
This book contains all the required theory in compact, though mathematically strict and complete form. About 180 pages, it is a valuable supplement for the study of continuum mechanics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise supplement to your professor's lecture
This "textbook" is really a bare-bones, although reasonably comprehensive, outline of an entry graduate course on continuum mechanics. Many of its 100 or so worked-out "problems" are not really problems as much they are part of larger derivations of theories. If your professor does not specify a required textbook or does not provide lecture notes, buy this book as a supplement. -UC Berkeley graduate mechanical engineering student

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome supplemental reading for advanced students
I first heard about this book when in engineering graduate school. At the time, this book was out-of-print, so my version came from an almost unreadable nth xerox copy, where n is a very large number. Having had two courses in Continuum Mechanics, I was in a position to appreciate this book. In addition to defining the trace and determinant in the usual way, for example, this book also lucidly presented invariant direct notation definitions. This book contains an excellent derivation of the jump relations that must be satisfied across moving shocks. This book is too disorganized and incomplete to serve as an introductory textbook, but it is fabulous as supplemental reading if you seek new insights on topics you already know. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fortunately... not Timoshenko
Timoshenko's book is a collection of exercises. Landau's book is a collection of ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sure... not Timoshenko.
Timoshenko is a Russian genious scientist/engineer who has credits in theory of elasticity and vibration analysis. Landau is a great physics educator in general but not an expert of elasticity. If you compare any elasticity book with Timoshenko's you will sure be very disappointed. Anyway I think this book is still fairly well written.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Timoshenko
I was looking for something similar to Timoshenko's "Theory of Elasticity." This was not it. I am a working mechanical engineer. This book is aimed at the physicist/student. It is 200 pages long and crammed full of tensors. They also hit on waves and liquid crystals. I may or may not keep this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bad print for an otherwise good textbook.
The book is a classic in the field; it's well written and clear, with interesting problems. However, the Publisher chose very tiny fonts, sometimes lacking in toner. Overall they did a terrible print, hard to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A CONCISE AND ELEGANT BOOK ON ELASTICITY
This is the Volume 7 of the famous Course of Theoretical Physics by L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz. All serious students of theoretical physics must possess the ten volumes of this excellent Course, which cover in detail and rigour practically all the branches of theoretical physics. The Volume 7 treats the subject of the mechanics of deformable bodies. Unlike the major part of other similar books, the Volume 7 is concise and very elegant, and is at the same time detailed in the exposition of the basic elasticity theory. Moreover, it contains certain topics not usually found in other similar books, such as the theory of thermal conduction and viscosity of solids, and a detailed exposition of the fundamentals of the mechanics of liquid crystals. A highly recommended book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a good source for a "quick review"
Like most other Schaum's series, the theory sections are condensed, which makes the part more like a compendium of continuum mechanics. The theoretical sections are thus good for a quick review of the material but not a good resource for "learning" the material. The biggest advantage of the book is that it provides an inexpensive summary of continuum mechanics.

The downside of the book is that the solved problems are not similar to the type of problems one confronts in a typical continuum course. In most cases several problems (statement together with the solution) are presented in a single page, which shows that each problem has been solved in 1-5 lines. I personally don't like most of the problems presented here; however, the problems could be useful for warming up.

A better book is "Introduction to the Mechanics of a Continuous Medium" by Malvern, which is the best I've seen in explaining the intricacies of the theory. Another good complement is Holzapfel's "Nonlinear Solid Mechanics: A Continuum Approach for Engineering", which contains both the theory AND some solved sample problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars better than most professors, but...
Better than most professors, but concepts are still difficult to grasp. Have you ever had one of those tennis ball machines go crazy at you? That is how continuum mechanics is, you constantly have things hurled in your direction and you don't know how to stop them. The concepts are very difficult to understand since I'm sure many professors have a hard time understanding the course material itself. The Schaum's outline helps very much in the sense that it slows down the hurling of material and it explains where many equations are derived from. This book stands out above the rest of continuum mechanics books in the sense that it offers solved problems, which is rare for such a theoretical class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not really a very good book
Not really a very good book on continuum mechanics. However, it
does summarise some very important points and equations useful
for quick reference. The exercise is not so great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too good
I really like this book. It is a good reference material. If you are involved in fluid flow research (theoretical, experimental and numerical) or fluid engineering practice, this book is for you. It can also be used as a reference for teaching advanced undergraduate or graduate level courses. The chapters are concise and straight to the points.

I am particularly impressed with Section IV: Numerical Solution of the Equations of Fluid Dynamics. Chapter 28 of Section IV written by Jerry Baker is excellent and the wide coverage of Finite Element Method is worth thorough reading. Chapter 30 of Section IV, titled Computer Science, provides a good comparison of programming languages for computation. The explanation of OOP (object-oriented programming) is commendable. A better title for this chapter should have been "Computer Programming for Fluid Dynamics". The chapter covers overview of software engineering, programming, operating system and parallel computation with no orientation towards fluid dynamics problems. As a general overview of computer system, the chapter is okay but with regards to gearing the contents specifically towards fluid dynamics, more work should have been done. Probably such work will be added in subsequent editions.

In all, this is an excellent book that is worth the cover price.

Transfer function form, zpk, state space, modal, and state space modal forms. For someone learning dynamics for the first time or for engineers who use the tools infrequently, the options available for constructing and representing dynamic mechanical models can be daunting. It is important to find a way to put them all in perspective and have them available for quick reference. It is also important to have a strong understanding of modal analysis, from which the total response of a system can be constructed. Finally, it helps to know how to take the results of large dynamic finite element models and build small MATLAB® state space models.Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS answers all those needs. Using a three degree-of-freedom (DOF) system as a unifying theme, it presents all the methods in one book. Each chapter provides the background theory to support its example, and each chapter contains both a closed form solution to the problem-shown in its entirety-and detailed MATLAB code for solving the problem. Bridging the gap between introductory vibration courses and the techniques used in actual practice, Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS builds the foundation that allows you to simulate your own real-life problems.FeaturesoDemonstrates how to solve real problems, covering the vibration of systems from single DOF to finite element models with thousands of DOFoIllustrates the differences and similarities between different models by tracking a single example throughout the bookoIncludes the complete, closed-form solution and the MATLAB code used to solve each problemoShows explicitly how to take the results of a realistic ANSYS finite element model and develop a small MATLAB state-space modeloProvides a solid grounding in how individual modes of vibration combine for overall system response ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A nice interface between dynamics and FEA
This book reviews the basic concepts of both dynamics and FEA. Vibration is a common phenomenon found in every walk of life. Automobile to watches we can see vibrations everywhere. For a vibration engineer, it is important to analyse the system behavior dynamically. This can be achieved using a FEA tool like ANSYS. This book delivers the exact thing one would expect as an interface between dynamics and FEA. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A hammer!
R. Stull makes a comprehensive and profound review of the boundary layer meteorology in his book. I consider this book to be a most useful tool for any scientist concerned with the troposphere, for all environmental engineers having to do with air quality, and for all micrometeorologists. Just like a hammer! One of the first to get for one's library. It contains the general descriptions of the usual subjects, thoroughly and well explained. Then it also contains extensive descriptions of different models used to make calculations. This is why I am willing to pay its... unfortunately not-very-low price. ... Read more

Book Description

Introducing the reader to classical integrable systems and their applications, this book synthesizes the different approaches to the subject, providing a set of interconnected methods for solving problems in mathematical physics. The authors introduce and explain each method, and demonstrate how it can be applied to particular examples. Rather than presenting an exhaustive list of the various integrable systems, they focus on classical objects which have well-known quantum counterparts, or are the semi-classical limits of quantum objects. They thus enable readers to understand the literature on quantum integrable systems. ... Read more

Book Description

This Third Edition of the well-received engineering text retains the clarity of exposition that made the previous editions so popular, and contains the most widely-used problem sets in the business. Approach to vibration analysis is clear, concise, and simple, backed up by a wealth of problems and examples. Multi-degree-of-freedom problems are well-prefaced with two-degree-of-freedom cases. There is a special treatment of damping, including non-viscous problems (standard texts make much use of viscous damping, but most practical examples are not viscous). Now includes an excellent development of Rayleigh's principle and an introduction to finite element vibration analysis. Contains 100 new problems. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good presentation on a hard topic, but outdated
The title more or less covers the idea -- the book is well written. Steidel presents the topics in a way the reader can absorb the material without feeling overwhelmed by the math involved. The book covers only introductory material, also including multi degree of freedom systems, continuous systems, and random vibrations. There are numerous GOOD examples and over 500 exercises, which is a lot for a textbook of this type. Sadly, no computer applications are presented in the book, this edition being from 1989, and should any new edition be in the works, it MUST contain computer applications to be of any use. Not using computers limits the student to working with 2 degree of freedom systems, no more. I'd suggest this book as backup for other more advanced and up to date books that do include modern applications but lack the thorough explanations in Steidel's book. The reader might like to check my comments on Thomson's Vibration book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wide and good review but only for specialists
The LBM methods are widely reviewed in all their relevant aspects.
The only lacking of this book is the poor description of the mathematical/physical background needed by non-specialists for a complete undertanding of the book's topics (e.g. the link between statistical mechanics and fluid dynamics). ... Read more
