3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not for beginners
Caroline's review is true, but this book was not what I expected. It describes only some selected points after showing all points on a full human picture. That is why it is not for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars A quality book
I was a bit dubious about buying this book as I have a lot of books on acupuncture already and no one had reviewed it. The reason I was considering it was mainly because of the ear acupuncture, which is often not covered in much detail in mainstream acupuncture books. Anyway, about a year after looking at it (since it was always popping up when I was browsing), I took the plunge - and it was well worth it.

The book is paperback size and weighs about 280 g (10 oz), mainly due to the glossy high quality paper used. The contents are extremely well organized and key information is presented clearly. The illustrations and photos are excellent. The introduction covers the body cun measurements. Part I covers the 12 main meridians and the conception vessel (Ren mai), governing vessel (Du mai) and extra points. For each meridian, all the points of the meridian are shown in one photo of a real human body, followed by detailed illustrations (showing bones, muscles and tendons), locations, actions, indications and needling of the major points. There are also blue boxes containing extra tips for locating points or warnings about treatment. Part II (50 pages) covering the ear is well done with reference to both the Chinese ear points and Nogier's ear points, including indications. The locations of points (or areas) in this section are depicted on photos of real ears. Part III (90 pages) on trigger points is equally well done. The references indicate a wealth of acupuncture research and resources in German. While this book may never become a recommended text in North America due to the already well-established texts available, it would be useful as a compact compendium for carrying around or as reference for both the student and practitioner. ... Book Description

The Atlas of Functional Neuroanatomy guides the student and practitioner in visualizing and understanding the many parts of the central nervous system (CNS)-the key to knowing where diseases occur. The illustrations include photographs and drawings (some color-enhanced) which have been selectively labeled; each is accompanied by text which explains the structures named and appropriate clinically-relevant comments. The Atlas presents an overview of the nervous system, followed by the sensory and motor systems as they traverse the CNS. These features prepare students to work through the localization process. The atlas also offers a detailed look at the microanatomy, particularly of the brainstem. Radiographic images are also included, along with illustrations of the blood supply of the brain. The final section features a unique set of illustrations, and these serve as the foundation for an integrated view of the structure and function of the limbic system. The accompanying CD-ROM contains all the illustrations from the print version, with the advantage of 3-D visualization and full color. Most noteworthy are the pathways of the spinal cord and brainstem, and the detailed illustrations of the microanatomy of the brainstem, along with color sections of the human brainstem. All of this enables students to approach the diseases of the nervous system with a strong anatomical background. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent clear text
I have been hunting for a concise and clear atlas that would help me visualize the brain in 3-D. Atlases I used in medical school were 2-D, too detailed, disjointed, and left alot to the imagination as to how the brain parts fit togther as a whole. This book takes the guess work out of that and is a text as well as an atlas. It uses airbrush pictures to help with visualization. In addtion, it has the added bonus of including a CD-ROM. It is a delight to read and in only minutes a day, I am gaining a whole new understanding of the brain. The pages are printed on high quality paper and you can easily use colored markers to color in any part of the brain you wish. There is even a suggested color chart. I am a neurology resident and I am so glad I found this book!! ... Read more

Book Description

Diagnosing and treating hair disorders is an essential component of both medical andcosmetic dermatology practice. Since this is a subject that is rarely or only superficially covered during residency training, the pathologists and dermatopathologists who must evaluate specimens submitted with a clinical diagnosis of hair disease often find a gap in their knowledge. The submitting dermatologist frequently must act as pathologist as well as clinician. More than just a book on hair disease, An Atlas of Hair Pathology with Clinical Correlations bridges that gap. The first comprehensive review of the microscopic pathology of hair disease, this book serves as a primer, an atlas, and a reference. As a primer, it reviews very basic information, including hair anatomy and the "nuts and bolts" of processing and evaluating specimens. As an atlas, it is rich in photographs demonstrating basic and advanced histologic features of hair disease. And, as a reference, it includes up-to-date information and a review of basic clinical features that provide a clinical-pathologic correlation. With 365 illustrations from the author's personal collection of slides, An Atlas of Hair Pathology with Clinical Correlations is the most complete and "user-friendly" resource on hair pathology available. ... Book Description

There's never been anything like this before: the very first anatomically exact, and complete, three-dimensional, computer-generated reconstruction of actual human anatomy. These amazing color images come to life thanks to the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project™. For every structure, the database generates a incredibly detailed "wire frame" image, which then underwent contour mapping for a more realistic picture. First, the systemic anatomy appears: the skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Then, the focus is on the regional anatomy, including the head and neck (with brain, eye, and ear); thorax (with lungs and heart); abdomen (stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, intestines, kidney); pelvis; upper limb (arm, elbow, forearm, hand); and lower limb (thigh, knee, legs, and foot). It's the most fascinating mirror on our own construction ever produced , and will enthrall students, doctors, scientists, and anyone interested in the miracle that is the human body.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice To Look At and Informative
"The New Atlas of Human Anatomy" is not an anatomy atlas that is similar to Netter's and Gray's. This is very visual and this gives nice, computerized anatomical charts. These charts are some of the most creative and beautiful charts that have been published. All of the charts that are in this book are three dimensional and they give you a feel as to what it is like if you could look at many different angles of each organ. To go along with the charts are informative essays on the functions of each organ or system that is in the book and there is important vocabulary highlighted in these essays. There is also a list of each minor part of the organ so you can find each part of the organ that you are looking at. This anatomical reference was put together by the Visible Human Project, a big project that had goals of doing what was presented in this book, three dimensional, computerized anatomy charts. This is a very nice medical book to add to any collection but this will not substitute big anatomy atlasses such as Gray's Anatomy. This is a very nice reference and keep-sake.

Happy Reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.
This book is an excellent reference tool for the layman who wants to know more about human anatomy. The illustrations are unsurpassed. I was astonished to see that it had such a low average customer rating, until I read the negative reviews. One is apparently from a "serious student of anatomy." I will confess ignorance as to whether it would suffice as a textbook for professional anatomy training; I just know that it greatly enhanced my lay understanding of how the human body is structured and how it works. The other negative reviews are from anti-circumcision activists who are apparently outraged that the depiction of the male penis in the book is that of a circumcised rather than an uncircumcised organ. Enough said.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Atlas by Mc Cracken
The presentation shows a 3-dimensional and anatomically correct
version of the human body depicted in full-color. All of the
major body systems are depicted for view by a wide constituency
of medical students, biology students, students of anatomy
and a broad general readship. Each body system has a locator
for ease of navigation through the text. Illustrations are
annotated methodically in full color. The musculature is set
forth in high definition for ease of identification.
The work is worth the price paid. Every scientific and
medical library should have one. This presentation would be
perfect for any class project in science.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the layman
This book is a beautiful book. I love the pictures. It is NOT for an A&P class though. You would need a book like Martini, Marieb, Tortora, Van de Graaff for that. But, the pictures are beautiful and on nice paper. The information that is presented is accurate. It is just not detailed. If you expect a very technical book, this is NOT the book for you. If you just want an easy read and overview of the body, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars New and exciting
This book is really very interesting. It isn't like the regular A&P text books. It describes some anatomy but it wouldn't get you through an anatomy class at all. The pictures are beautiful and the book is huge with wonderful descriptions. It is very easy to understand, even for a lay person. I enjoyed the book very much. Disregard the other bad reviews. I can't believe someone would make a huge deal about a circumsized cadaver! (which is how they reproduced their photos!!) ... Read more
