5-0 out of 5 stars Great atlas for histology
I found this book to be a great resource for my medical histology class. The pictures helped me to remember key concepts for on my histology lab. The difference between squamous and transitional epithelium can really only be appreciated with the help of this atlas since it is harder to describe it in words. If you really want to know the type of medical histology questions asked on histology medical exams, get the following which is on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide helped me to know what type of questions to prepare for on my exams. I give both books 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for medical students
Excellent photomicrographs with explanations of each. Good review of each subject at each chapter. Can be used alone as a review book.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent atlas
The atlas was excellent and easy to refer to. The text, while usable, is brief and has much more information than was necessary at my undergraduate medical level. I recommend using this as an atlas and using a different text (such as Wheater) for accompanying explanations. ... Read more

Book Description

Step-Up is designed as a single-volume, concise yet comprehensive review book for 2nd year medical students preparing for the USMLE Step 1. This Second Edition addresses the new format of the USMLE Step 1 by incorporating a systems-based orientation, clinical integration of content, and expanded clinical cases. The book presents information in different ways in order to suit different learning styles. It includes material in bulleted, "high-yield" form, comprehensive illustrations and tables, clinical case studies, and "Quick Hits," or clinical "pearls" in the margin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible
This book is the bible of basic medical science. It incorporates everything you need to know into a concise, systems-based format. It is easy to read, and is great to use as you go through the systems in your first two years. Don't wait until board prep to buy this book! Use it all along to see what information is truly "high-yield".

4-0 out of 5 stars A better review than First Aid
The great advantage of this book is the system-based approach. First Aid is merely a list of facts to memorize out of context, which will not help you on the vignettes in the actual test. Step up reviews the anatomy, embryology, physio, and path of each major system -- which will help you to see the big picture and be able to take a unified approach to each boards question instead of trying to remember individual pearls. It does, however, lack a great review in terms of Biochem, Behavioral Science, and Pharm, so I would supplement with the High Yield series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice diagrams & layout but....Be careful!
Since i'm a relatively old IMG I was delighted when I discovered this book, so I bought it and I personally used it for my step 1 preparation, FORTUNATELY I discovered it late.....since if I'd have trusted just in this book (I mean without First Aid)..I'd have failed....so b VERY careful....if u use this book for specific clinical situations (their tables in anemia, different cancer types etc) its great...but eventhough u will need first aid as a guide for the remainder. In my exam physiology and pharmacology were heavily tested and these guys almost forgot these subjects, on the other hand their pathology is excellent. Their pharmacology is quite poor, they ignored mechanisms of action of the different drugs (quite HY in USMLE). So if u use this book being aware of these problems and especially as a quick review only before the exam it should be OK.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Yield
I used this book in addition to the Kaplan series. I felt this was ideal in the week prior to the exam, and was superior to first aid. There are several mistakes in the text, but between this text and kaplan I crushed the exam. I would not recommend this text to anyone who is weak in pharmacology!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes
While this book actually does represent a major step up
in terms of detail compared to the "Gold Standard" First Aid for Usmle, the current print seems little premature to me (even though it states to be a "Revised Reprint", since I could find a substantial number of significant mistakes while just going through it ONCE. Since I am not really an expert, I would bet
that someone with a more thorough background knowledge in Pathology, Biochemistry and Behavioral Sciences for example

would find countless more mistakes than I did.

Generally I would recommend this book only to people, who are VERY advanced in their studies for the Step 1, so that they can be sure to filter out these substantial mistakes and do not attempt to memorize wrong stuff. But then again : why would you buy a review book, if you knew already everything so perfectly that you could immediately recognize these mistakes ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative. Very much.
Being a second year, this book is a God-send. I should have gotten it last year. Now I really feel that I have insight into the things that I need to be a really competitive candidate. Whenever I asked my preceptors and mentors what I should do, I would receive really vague answers and was often told to not worry about doing research and all of the other things that everyone else was doing. I also feel that after reading the book, I have a much better understanding of the fellowships and residencies, as well as how to schedule my rotations for my third and fourth years.

Very comprehensive. Even has instructions on how you should pack when going for interviews. Compared to the high cost of a medical education, the money you pay for this great resource is a drop in the bucket with tremendous benefit. Really.

5-0 out of 5 stars IMG, intern in FP residency
Being an IMG, I had to learn the completely different approach of getting into residency than that is in my country. Though not one book is ever going to tell you all the tiny details of that process, I have to admit that this book was my bible during the whole interview season. It's very good in revealing the mechanics, timelines, expectations and requirements as well as things like how to look for the interviews, what to tell and ask and what not to. It's better to buy and read early, since it helps to understand how to build solid resume which in turn takes some time to do. I bought it in August - right before interview season, and it still helped me a lot. I highly recommend it for everybody, especially for medical students, who are thinking about specialty choice - it gives statistics and insights into different specialties from different perspectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts from a 4th year, soon to be intern
Having just gone through the residency application/match process, I'd like to offer some of my thoughts on the keys to matching successfully with the residency program of your choice. At my medical school, we have a committee that is responsible for providing our students with the guidance needed to match successfully. This year, I had the opportunity to participate on the committee. The other members include several residency program directors, deans, and clerkship directors.

We all agreed that there are no books that can take the place of a good advisor. The right advisor can make all the difference in the world. However, few students would feel comfortable relying solely on an advisor and therefore, most students buy one or more books to help them. Iserson's Getting into a Residency is one such book our committee recommends. This is a book that is now in its sixth edition and has a lot of information essential to the residency application process. In our opinion, every student should buy this book on Day # 1 of medical school because it offers useful advice for years 1,2,3, and 4.

There are several other books that also deserve mention. One is First Aid for the Match by Vikas Bhushan, which is one of the books in the popular First Aid Series. Our committee did not find it as useful but its strengths are the CV and personal statement examples it provides. Another book that we recommend is The Residency Match: 101 Biggest Mistakes And How To Avoid Them by Samir Desai. This book is unlike the other two in that its focus is on the mistakes students make, which are not addressed in the other sources. This book was not available when I applied but had it been, it would have been very useful to me. I can recall making some of these mistakes and I can tell you that it's easy to fall into these traps.

I hope that I have been helpful. Good luck to all of you in your efforts to match with your desired residency program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard for teaching EBM
As a physician-teacher of EBM to internal medicine residents, this is the best book I've run across for this purpose. We utilize the reader's guides, first published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and later in JAMA, written by Guyatt, Sackett, and others, which are perfectly complemented by this volume. I recommend it to all of the residents and have purchased multiple copies for house staff use (although I can't seem to keep them on the shelf...) It makes learning EBM fun and highlights its usefulness and, most importantly for busy physicians, speed. Worth reading for every physician interested in practicing medicine based on only the best evidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and precise
Concise and precise- just what the busy clinician wants to see. And for whoever needs more info, there is an extra CD Rom that preovides just that. Few medical books had more impact on my professional behavior than this one. Buy it, read it, and follow its advise!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all.
Dr. Sackett's book is a well thought out review of evidence-based medicine (EBM), and is the source of what seems to be the most often noted definition of EBM. This is a must-have reference for those interested in evidence-based action (which applies to much more than just medicine). However, according to Sackett's own definition, this edition is getting a little long in the tooth. He also follows a pretty classical approach to the logic of rational decision making, which may or may not suit the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smashing!
Short and concise, this book really excels at demystifying EBM and making it easier (and more importantly, fun!). The use of flash cards for summarising points is great, and it's clear that the authors are enjoying themselves teaching EBM. This honestly is the first medical book that I'd classify as 'un-putdownable'!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Primer
This well done book is partly an introduction to teaching/practicing Evidence Based Medicine (EBM)and partly an act of evangelism. The authors are concerned not only with describing the basic methods of EBM but also with convincing readers that this is the appropriate way to practice and teach clinical medicine. EBM and its precursor movements are based on the correct realization that physicians tend not to be very critical about clinical practice, much of which is learned by emulation. This book builds on an existing movement and the presence of widely available online resources to tap into appropriate critical evaluations of clinical practice. In doing so, the authors attempt to educate physicians about how to use these resources, relatively simple statistical tools that can be incorporated into application of good clinical literature to practice, and how to teach these methods. Because the authors are academics who wish to influence medical education, there is a good deal of emphasis on educational methods. While this may be an apparent short coming for readers who are not academics, it is actually worthwhile for all physicians because self-education is a constant part of our job. This book is very well done with some nice features. It is small and has a durable plastic cover, designed to carried in pockets or in a medical bag, there is a small CD with good examples, and a set of plasticized flash cards on major key points. Drawbacks are relatively minor. More information on how to analyze clinical trials and studies would be useful but in a concise book, something has to give way. Used carefully, the information in this book may change your practice and teaching methods. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for writers....
The Mayo Clinic Family Health Book is like having six resource books in one. Information from Mayo is reliable, easy-to-understand and reviewed by some of the most respected physicians in the world.

Part I: Living Well
Part II: Common Conditions and Concerns Through Life's Stages
Part III: Making Sense of Your Symptoms
Part IV: First Aid and Emergency Care
Visual Guide: Anatomy and Common Disorders (color photos and illustrations)
Part V: Diseases and Disorders
Part VI: Tests and Treatments
Glossary and Resources
Index

Each disease mentioned contains information about key signs and symptoms, a basic description of the disease, illustrations, how the disease is diagnosed, potential consequences, information on treatment, and information on prevention.

The comprehensive index in the third edition is easy to use. For example, information on "scoliosis" can be found on pages 235, 603, 774, 980, and 981. (Page 980 features an illustration.)

There is also a complete listing of resources for more information including addresses, phone numbers and Web sites. I particularly like the section on symptoms. You can just look up a symptom such as "back pain" and learn more about conditions that cause back pain. The book then directs you to the page containing detailed information about that condition.

I'm looking forward to what I hope will be the interactive DVD version of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Physicist
We recently purchased this book and I find it extremely well written and useful. I would call it super for a physicist doing medical imaging research. The book reads like a reference text for a researcher. There are no cartoons or homework problems. The second edition is very up to date. The book could use some references to advanced information sources as it is a bit short on physics/mathematics details.

5-0 out of 5 stars suitable for teaching medical physicist wannabes now
I currently own the first edition of this book, and after flipping throug this new expanded 2nd edition, I'll be upgrading soon. The first book is an excellent text to use for teaching radiology residents the principles of medical imaging. Now, this second edition with greatly expanded content and pictures looks like it would be suitable for teaching a course to medical physics students. All sections appear to be significantly expanded with the additional detail needed for medical physicists. Still excellent for residents, but might go into a little more detail than they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos for an excellent textbook.
Opening the pages to this textbook is like stepping into a classroom. These authors obviously are not only experts in their respective subspecialties of medical physics, but they are also seasoned teachers of the art and science of this field of medicine. This is easily evidenced by the clarity of thought and completeness with which they treat each topic in this comprehensive, easily readable textbook. I highly recommend this textbook to all who have a need for such a clear, concise teaching of the many aspects of medical physics covered in this work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Physics Review
This text book is the most up to date and comprehensive text book available for radiology residents preparing for the ABR exam as of this date 3/12/2002. I have recommended this text for my most serious students and they have done quite well on the ABR exam. The doctors I work with are equally enthusiastic about its in-depth analysis, full citations to the supporting literature and its refreshing objectivity. This is the first time, to my knowledge, that nutritional supplements have been accorded the same in-depth treatment given, in other guides, to prescription drugs. This book should be "must" reading for every doctor, dietician, pharmacist and for every lay person who wishes to intelligently share in the management of his/her own health. There has never been a resource like this before.

For those interested in herbal medicine, there is a separate PDR dealing with herbs; although I do not find the herbal PDR as useful as The PDR for Nutritional Supplements, which covers all the other nutritional/dietary supplements, as well as some of the active constituents of popular herbs, the herbal book is also better than most. Initially I wondered why Medical Economics, the highly respected publisher of the PDR series of books, did not combine the herbs with the other dietary supplements and cover all of them in one reference book. An editor at Medical Economics told me that had they done so they would have had to sacrifice much of the in-depth treatment they have provided--far in excess, as I have previously noted, of anything available in any of the other books--in order to squeeze all of the supplements discussed into one marketable tome. We can all be thankful that they did not do this. Both books are indispensable, as is every word in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brim Full of Information
Tired of getting your supplement information from the vitamin shop clerk? This is state of the art stuff. Finally here is a book that both the lay person and the physician can safely turn to. The author has no axe to grind. He neither overstates nor understates, but is carefully objective in his presentation and allows the evidence to speak for itself. Dr. Hendler brings to his subject an open mind, wide ranging intelligence, and a rigorous training in all of the relevant disciplines. He refuses to be a shill either for entrenched medical orthodoxy or starry eyed alternative approaches. The result is a cornucopia of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Critical Resource to Control Your Life Through Health Care
The PDR for Nutritional Supplements is the most well organized and substantive publication that I have ever used in over twenty years as a supplement consumer and one of the best literary purchases that I have ever made.

While other publications may purport to be "encyclopedic," they fall short of the mark in paying attention to detail. Dr. Hendler's PDR for Nutritional Supplements is a critical and necessary resource for anyone using nutritional supplements, functional foods and or herbs. The knowledge imparted here will allow you to take control of your life as it relates to health care and maintenance.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is fantastic. Finally a scientific approach to the complex and often confusing information about supplements. Dr. Hendler makes no unfounded statements and he provides unbiased and objective facts understandable to both the lay person and physician. He even shows us the molecular structures of the supplements. This is a great work by one of the long time leaders in the field.

1-0 out of 5 stars PDR for nutritional supplements
Don't waste your money on this book. Unlike the regular PDR's it does not contain much information, and when looking for herbal remedies that your patients are using, most of them are NOT in here. The supplement name index is only nine pages (most books are at least fifteen to twenty). On the positive side, it does mention the actual studies used for reference under each heading in the article with specific details of the studies and I did find "Bee Pollen," which I could not find in the other books I had. Two cheaper and more helpful books are the "Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements," by Michael T. Murray, N.D. and "The New Encyclopedia of Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements, and Herbs," by Nicola Reavley. These are both well-referenced to medical journals and will also discuss risks and benefits of the remedy (you will need to look for the names of the articles in the reference section, listed by footnote number). When comparing drugs in the PDR to the other two books, much of the information is the same. In addition, these other two books can be used to look up a condition and find a remedy for it. I am still looking for a comprehensive resource for physicians. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars These Aren't Flash Cards
I just received these. They're not flash cards. A flash card has a question (images, etc) on one side and answer(s) on the other. These cards just have info on both sides. They're review cards, not flash cards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for massage student or undergrad A and P
These cards make learning anatomy and physiology a lot easier. Sometimes you don't have the time to read big textbooks. However, I would recommend these study cards as a great source for learning the human body for massage students or college A and P students. I am a massage student and found these cards to be a very valuable source in helping me get very good grades. I also used, which is also on amazon.com:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
(Vol 1 ISBN: 0971999619) & (Vol 2 ISBN: 0971999627)
The author of these study guides seems to know the type of questions asked on my massage school anatomy and physiology tests. I have a few friends who also used these study guides for undergrad anatomy and physiology and found them to be quite helpful. I recommend getting all three books.

4-0 out of 5 stars review Anatomy & Physiology (Flash Cards)
I really liked the anatomy & physiology flash cards. I am a massage therapy student and find the cards a quick & concise outline on the specific topics I study in class. The pictures are a great help in review of the subjects also. I plan to recommend the set to my fellow students in massage school. ... Read more

This is an excellent care plan book. It takes you through the possible goals, interventions, and rationales for each diagnosis and even gives suggestions for assessment data to collect. It also has a small appendix with nursing diagnoses by illness. Every illness is not listed in this section, but a lot are.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesia Secrets
I have used this book, periodically, since my CA-1 year, and I find the material to be useful as an adjunct, or supplementation, in my studies for my anesthesiology boards.

You should not use this book alone to learn the art and science of anesthesiology, as the discipline requires a voluminous amount of study to be a safe and competent practitioner. This book, however, is good for it's intended use by the Author, James Duke, MD, University of Colorado, by taking a large amount of knowledge and making it digestable for practical scenarios.

Solid references and bibliographies make this a reliable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Summary of Most Important topics in Anesthesia
I owned the first edition of this book during medical school while taking a rotation in Anesthesiology, and it was an INVALUABLE aid! I could find many answers to questions I was "pimped" on during the rotation, which were hard or impossible to find in the standard large text books. I highly recommend it to anyone doing a rotation in, planning on going into, or working in and around Anesthesiologists! An absolutely wonderful book, buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes learning med terminology easy
This book makes learning medical terminology very easy. At first I was skeptical of the "programmed learning" approach - it seemed much too repetitive and grade school-ish. However, I found that as I finished each chapter in the workbook, I retained the majority of the information. I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the basics of medical terminology without putting forth a great deal of effort. I found the workbook to be fun, and the CD, which includes sample quizzes and learning activities, was extremely helpful.
