Book Description

Stress is generally defined as a strain upon a bodily organ or mental power. Depending on its duration and intensity, stress can have short- or long-lasting effects: it has been linked to heart disease, immune deficiency, memory loss, behavioral disorders, and much more. These effects on the individual also have a major impact on health care costs and services, employee productivity, and even violent crime.
The Encyclopedia of Stress is the first comprehensive reference source on stressors, the biological mechanisms involved in the stress response, the effects of activating the stress response mechanisms, and the disorders that may arise as a consequence of acute or chronic stress. While other books focus on specific aspects of stress, this three-volume set covers the entire spectrum of topics, with nearly 400 articles in all.
In addition to the subjects traditionally associated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (whereby the brain sends a message to the body to react), the Encyclopedia includes a wide range of related topics such as neuroimmune interactions, cytokines, enzymatic disorders, effects on the cardiovascular system, immunity and inflammation, and physical illnesses. It also goes beyond the biological aspects of stress to cover topics such as stress and behavior, psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders, workplace stress, post-traumatic stress, stress-reduction techniques, and current therapies. The Encyclopedia of Stress makes information easy to find and understand for a broad audience of researchers, clinicians, professionals, and students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients
This is an excellent book that contains every phamaceutical excipient that I have ever had the need to know about. I work for a dietary supplement manufacturer and we quite often get calls from customers that want to know all about all those "other ingredients" that are listed on product cartons. The book has a section for each excipient and each excipient has the following sections: Nonproprietary Names, Synonyms, Chemical Name and CAS Registry Number, Empirical Formula and Molecular Weight, Structural Formula, Functional Category, Applications in Pharmaceutical Formulation or Technology, Description, Pharmacopeial Specifications, Typical Properties, stability and Storage Conditions, Incompatibilities, Method of Manufacture, Safety, Handling Precautions, Regulatory Status, Pharmacopeias, Related Substances, Comments, Specific References, General References, and Authors. While I have a background in Biology, I found several of the sections to be easy to understand by several of our employees that do not have a science background. While, still, there was highly technical/scientific information as well. Each excipient's information is contained in 2-4 pages. The book is arranged alphabetically which makes finding information easy. In addition, it contains an index that is very well constructed. For example: If you are looking for an Emulsifying Agent, the index lists all the excipients that can be used for that purpose. I can't say enough how easy this book is to use. Its information is pared down to the essential text, and is chocked full of graphs, charts and microscopic photos of the excipients. ... Read more

The 1998 10th edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary marks the 100th anniversary of this distinguished and popular reference standard, and this is more than just an interesting statistic--it means that Merriam-Webster brings years of experience and reams of citation files to the creation of this latest edition. Improving on their last dictionary, they've added more than 100 pictorial illustrations and supplemented the synonym paragraphs with examples. Along with the English dictionary, which forms the heart of the reference, the editors at Merriam-Webster have included a brief introduction to the English language and a history of the English dictionary, a guide to pronunciation, and a series of appendices that include chemical element abbreviations and symbols, foreign words and phrases, extensive sections with biographical and geographical names, signs and symbols, and a handbook of style.

But getting back to the book itself--it's impressively comprehensive for a collegiate dictionary, with more than 215,000 definitions. Each item includes a pithy wealth of information, with first usage date, etymology, and pronunciation, and clear, precise definitions. In addition, there are often usage notes, synonym cross-references, illustrative quotations, variant spellings and pronunciations, regional labels, and information on capitalization, function, and inflections. Then there are the extra touches. Under bible, for example, there's a chart detailing books of the Old Testament, Jewish Scripture, Protestant apocrypha, and books of the New Testament. Under months is a table listing the months of the principal calendars--Gregorian, Jewish, and Islamic. And wonderful line drawings illustrate terms such as mackerel, lyrebird, hedgehog, and the ancient Celtic stringed instrument known as a crowd. All this makes it a valuable reference--detailed enough for editors and writers, accessible enough for students and casual definition seekers, updated with the new vocabulary of technology, and rigorous enough for the linguistic perfectionists. --Stephanie Gold ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough guide for almost all dictionary users
The MW Tenth is the latest in my nearly complete collection of this company's series of dictionaries. I began with the Fifth and bought each as they were published This current edition (Tenth) has increased the size and scope of desk dictionaries -- it is much larger than many previous editions (the Eighth and Ninth are of similar size) and contains such a wealth of information that almost no one would outgrow it. I find the Tenth useful not only in itself, but in the context of its predecessors. Words change their meaning over time and a new dictionary is essential to knowing exactly where a word is at this time -- as well as using previous editions to see where it came from. I am proud to have contributed a word to the Ninth edition, still listed in the Tenth: "hizzoner." It took years of research, but how many people get their own entry in a major dictionary? The MW Tenth is a great book for just browsing and (not incidentally)learning just when a word entered the language. More "family reading" of dictionaries such as this might help young children enjoy their language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always the first reference I reach for
By updating Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary every
10-12 years, its publishers continue to provide wordsmiths, copy editors, students, teachers, and folks who simply love learning about the English language (American style) a great service and indispensable reference.

Though at heart, this certainly is a robust, up-to-date dictionary, the additional reference information proves valuable for a host of purposes. The histories, guides, and lists that span the opening section should not be regarded merely as the arcane turf of lexicographers and linguists. For the most part, these are great resources worth your attention. Likewise, there are appendices that delve into such varied subject matter as foreign words and phrases, chemical element, geographical names, and a style guide.

Do not be misled by the fact this volume is called a collegiate dictionary. It is also the dictionary favored by legions of copy editors charged with maintaining consistency and correctness in myriad publications of all sorts, from newspapers to newsletters. This dictionary has always been the most responsive to changes in the language, and each new edition swells by thousands of new entries. The standard features are all here of course: bold-face entries, pronunciation, economical but precise definitions and usage examples, and all the other details you need. In addition to the small, inset line drawings that grace every few pages, there are occasional half-page illustrations that expand certain terms.

Sure there are going to be some errors that pundits and nitpickers will gleefully cite, but it you consider the how much information is packed into this hardback edition (I would never buy a paperback dictionary)...you can do no better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for everyday use
An important issue with choosing a dictionary is finding a balance that meets your needs.

My first choice of dictionaries is the 20 volume OED for depth and breadth of coverage. Some disadvantages of the OED are the price and the size. My second choice of dictionaries is the Shorter OED, which is smaller (2 volumes) and cheaper, but has about 1/3 of the entries (roughly 500,000).

My third choice of dictionaries is the "New Oxford American Dictionary," which is easy to carry and use - it has roughly 250,000 words. The NOAD is handy because it has definitions arranged in order of most common usage - "core meanings" followed by related senses. It does not have the extensive literary citations that the OED and shorter OED have.

My fourth choice of dictionaries is probably the Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged, which has about 450,000 words. The disadvantages of this dictionary are that the main text has not been updated since 1961 (although an 89 page addenda is added at the beginning), the layout is hard to follow, and it's a bit unwieldy.

Which brings me to my fifth choice of dictionaries, which is the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate dictionary. This dictionary has roughly 200,000 words, so it loses some breadth and depth of coverage. However, it's very useful for everyday use, and a nice balance between portability and breadth and depth of coverage.

5-0 out of 5 stars does this really need a review?
somethings are just great and need no reviews. This is one of them. If you read, you need this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Practical Dictionary
This Dictioanry is a real bargain for the price you pay. Pretty much all the words, esoteric or otherwise that you come across in the course of your reading is covered by this very useful tome. The newer edition with the CD-ROM functionality should be the real clincher. Of course comparison the the unabridged OED is unfair for this book, but that would be something else to look at if you have a lot of cash to spare :)
The only problem I have with it is rather minor; External looks if you will; The red cloth bound binding is jarring on the eye; The edges of the book are splashed with fine red droplets of ink (perhaps interntionally?) - But that's a minor hiccup for a book that packs in so much for so little! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best Pocketguide for radiography students&radiographers
We looked at all the pocketguides available and the Ballinger/Frank was the best of the group. First, this is the only pocketguide that had a radiograph. That is usually all I need to do the projection. The radiograph is helpful when I check my films also. Second, I can write in my AEC techniques and this is the only pocketguide that allows this. Third, we use CR and the CR tips on the pages are very helpful. I also like the pages on positioning for newborn babies. It fits nicely in my pocket and is my constant companion. Some of the radiology rooms in our department have these guides on the generator for quick access to positions not done as often. This is a great little reference for daily use. I plan to buy a new one when I finish training.

2-0 out of 5 stars too big for the pocket
I found this book to not be a good value as it is too large to easily fit in a pocket. My program had us buy it as a required book. Book would be improved by making it smaller. Also please put in pictures of finished radiographs and technique suggestions. (Showing suggested side marker placement and showing 2 or three views together on a single image receptor when this is customary would be useful too.) I gave up on trying to carry this thing and wrote my own little book to carry. So did the other students at my hospital.

5-0 out of 5 stars HANDY REFERENCE
The newest edition of this Pocket Guide is a great improvement over the previous edition. The alert to projections that may need adjustment for computed radiography is a timely addition. The write-in techniques section is excellent, especially for AEC techniques. We also like the added mobile projections although only 10 of the most common are described. This handy fit-in-the pocket guide is wonderful for students to carry around and reference. The discussion is very brief, however the students have already had detailed study from the main Merrill's textbook. No radiographs are included, however, they have already seen these in their main textbook and in lab. The most important addition, a very well done photo of the patient in postion, is all that most students and radiographers refer to once they have mastered the projections. Although a radiograph would be nice, we are glad the authors have not cluttered the pages with unnecessary data and have kept the Guide relatively small. This is by far the best Pocket Guide on the market. Thanks for a very well done and practical Guide for our students.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT POCKET GUIDE
This is a great pocket guide for radiography students. The new techniques section, especially the AEC area, is well designed to include any portion of any exposure technique. Not only do our students depend on this for their daily techniques in the clinical areas, we use it for our lab sessions and the students augment the printed matter with notes of their own. This is the best tool the student has when they leave our program and begin work elsewhere. This pocket guide is very comprehensive and fits nicely into a pocket. My faculty depend on this guide when they moonlight at various jobs around our locale. No radiography student should be without this very well designed tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Pocket Guide On the Market
The new 4th edition of this pocket guide to radiography, with new co-author Eugene D Frank, has been greatly improved. It is the smallest and easiest PG to carry around. Our students cannot get along in the department without this. Our staff radiographers also depend on this. A wonderful new feature of this new edition is the ability to enter AEC techniques, something no other PG has. Every possible AEC setting can be entered! There is also a place to enter manual techniques which makes this an all around excellent guide. The very brief statements of how to position along with a well done photo allow users to quickly reference any position. Our radiology residents use this also for quick reference. We really appreciate the new references to mobile views and especially neonatal babies. Without a doubt this is one of the best tools a radiography student has. Most of my students who leave here buy a new one for their new facility. This new PG can also serve as a student competency check off master because space is provide to enter this information. An impressive all around guide. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Concise, affordable reference
The Merck Manual's new edition is a much needed update to previous editions. The book follows the same, easy to follow formal and includes sections on exotic animals that were not a part of previous editions. It is a very affordable although fairly comprehensive reference to general veterinary medicine.

Some veterinary students have found this a very useful book for reviewing while studying for National Boards.

The book's main flaw is that references are poorly cited, and for the most part, are non-existent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Bathroom Reading For The Layman
Want to know what to feed your sheep? Or your lizard? Want to know why your cow has the sniffles? This book has it!

I have an old dogeared (heh) copy of the people book these folks put out. I decided to pick up the veterinary manual after acquiring a rabbit. (I was using the people book to look up feline ailments, which mapped extremely well to the entries in the people book. The rabbit is a little space alien, as far as that goes.) I sat down with some crackers and a cup of coffee and had a blast riffling through the book and pondering over such delightful words are ruminants and ungulates.

I felt the book was not the most intuitively organized book I've ever seen, but it's a great reference manual (once you get the hang of it) and is fun to flip through if the only animals you have ever dealt with have been cats and dogs.

One big problem is that I will go along reading something and have no idea what species I am reading about. I'm a little concerned about what I am going to do in an emergency. "Now is that a lagomorph problem? Oh wait. It's talking about the patient's trunk! Or is that a uvula?"

So, I liked it, but not as much as, say "The Book of the Cat". The rabbit did not (he bit it and shoved it onto the floor) and the cats want to own it (they rubbed their chins on it.)

Its a great peek into the lives of farmers and zookeepers at any rate. I wonder how veterinarians feel about it?

4-0 out of 5 stars If only i could purchase MVM when I was student...
Very useful book. Exposition language very easy. Altough my english isn't good, I understand and MVM help to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable if you know what you are talking about
This is a great book. If you already know alot, then you will be all set. I've only been an assistant for 2years, and reading this is difficult, if I didn't have a vet dictionary I would be lost. If you are well trained then I see this as a wonderful book to have, maybe invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great referencing!
As a veterinary technician who graduated in '94 and is out of the clinics, but still works in Animal care, it is the best. I refer back to it all the time. I don't remember everything I was taught and especially being away from practices, it is perfect. It has EVERYTHING!! I carry it with me, it is like my bible! Nothing beats this either, I had other books that I have tried to refer to, but this is ideal as I stated it has everything. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good basic medical dictionary
If you require a more indepth medical dictionary consider "Diccionario Medico- Mosby"

4-0 out of 5 stars A very handy bilingual resource
This bilingual medical dictionary is a perfect pocket size reference for daily terminology for those working in the medical profession, students or simply for those who want to be able use medical terminology in both English and Spanish. The dictionary does not provide definitions of the medical terms or words so if your looking for a bilingual reference with definitions you should consult another source. The terms are arranged alphabetically and the equivalent word or phrase is provided from English to Spanish or from Spanish to English. For example: health food = comida saludable, to gain weight = aumentar de peso, vaccine= vacuna. The terminology is not at all complicated and is quite accurate. There are some practice dialogues patient- doctor questions and typical scenarios. The resource is perfect if you use it in the correct capacity, which is to quickly look up medical terminology and the equivalent meaning in English or Spanish. This dictionary is not an exhaustive resource; it would have been better if it were a little bigger.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book, level of speaker
There seems to be a misunderstanding on the role of a bilingual dictionary and one with definitions. Bilingual dictionaries are a quick translating reference from one language to another and are not necessarily meant to contain definitions. If you want a dictionary with medical terms and definitions in Spanish, you need a Spanish/Spanish medical dictionary. Though I expected this book to have a lot more in-depth medical terminology than it does, I think it would make an excellent reference for intermediate-level speakers. It has a very handy "dialogue" section in the back for communicating with patients on a variety of medical topics such as getting medical history, dentistry, birth control, neurology, etc., as well as a vast amount of slang terms. Advanced-level professional interpreters/translators, however, may not find this book quite as useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars the one I always carry
For working medical interpreters, this dictionary will provide the information you need without adding ten pounds to your briefcase! Advantages include: very small size, excellent coverage of both general and specialized terminology, and a convenient format. It's true that definitions are not included - but if you're looking for a portable quick reference, the definitions just add weight...and if you don't know what a term means, you should be asking the doctor for an explanation, not reading to the patient from your dictionary. Readers from countries like Spain or Argentina will notice that this dictionary favors Spanish terms used in the U.S., Mexico and Central America. Highly recommended. Buy this one and a pocket-sized Larousse (general bilingual dictionary) to carry in your bag, and save your bigger medical dictionaries for reference/research use in the office.

If you want definitions of medical terms in Spanish, the Diccionario de Medicina (published by Planeta) is highly recommended. It includes a hardcover reference book AND an easy-to-use CD version. Don't plan on carrying it around, though - it's a monster!

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing book
I was very disappointed in this book - as I was looking for a true dictionary, one that would give the definition of the word. This book would be useful only for those medical personnel who needed to learn the terms in either english or spanish. The editorial review describes this book as defining the words in it and it does not - very misleading. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars There are better books out there.....
This book is a good introduction to medical terminology. It is not as comprehensive as some that are on the market, though. My edition did not come with a CD, but shows it as an optional tool. This book lacks a glossary and pronunciation of the medical terms. It does explain body processes in a way that makes it easy for the novice to understand, and that makes the book worth owning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Terminology A Systems Review
I received the book with CD as a gift because I will be entering the field of medicine. The book and CD are easy to follow and I have learned more than I ever expected in medical terminology.

The book is easy to follow and prepares you to read medical reports and to learn thousands of medical terms, including diagnostic, symptomatic, and surgical terms. The pronunciations help me pronounce words correctly when I talk to the medical staff at the hospital.

I recommend this book highly.

1-0 out of 5 stars The software is bad.
The software with this book was totally unacceptable, and I returned the book. It would not work with the font size settings I normally use, and even when I changed the settings it first demanded I put a floppy in my A: drive and then wouldn't work anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive But You Are on Your Own!
I have used the other editions mainly as a reference to many medical conditons which I hear about in my practice as a psychiatrist. As usual, the latest text provides the information but there is no attempt to bullet or separate out the most important stuff - and no beautiful color diagrams as in Cecil's. Of its many strengths, the HIV chapter is authored by Anthony Fauci at NIH, a renowned international AIDS expert. If you want to keep up to date the ...price is a bargain. If you are a student choose what is most helpful to your style and use the study guide for board practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars big and complete
Big, complete and one of the most renowned books of internal medicine. Only the index could be more completely and the pictures could have been coloured. Instead of showing the genetic background
some practical approaches should sometimes have been emphasized more.

5-0 out of 5 stars great reference book
Briefly speaking: this book is for people who are familiar with the field of Medicine. Every few years I have to get a new edition as medicine is developing so rapidly. As I am now out of the mainstream of Medicine, when I want to look up something I read this book and the Merck Manual and I look up words I don't know in the on-line medical dictionary. That provides a fairly good intro. If I want to know more I go into the papers on PubMed. As far as I'm concerned, this book is a must-have, if you want to try to keep up with the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Internal Medicine in "Pocket" Form
This is an excellent resource for those questions that need quick, consise answers. The chapters for Harrison's Principles of Internal medicine are neatly summarized into quick-reading two or three page summaries, with many helpful charts and management tips. Depth and underlying pathophysiology is not well covered, but that's what the big book (Principles) is for. My only complaint is that with this edition, the book is about 5"x8", which doesn't fit into my coat pocket. The companion to the 14th edition (4"x6") is virtually identical in information, and fits in my pocket. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Test Success: Test-Taking Techniques
Test Success: Test-Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students 3rd ed. by Particia M. Nugent and Barbara A. Vitale
This book is designed for fundamentals of nursing. It introduces techniques for developing a positive mental attitude, critical thinking skills, and study techniques. It teaches specific and general test-taking techniques. It identifies the nursing process as a form of problem solving. The book emphasizes multiple-choice questions but also addresses structured response, restricted response, extended essay questions and performance appraisal as well as computer applications in education and evaluation. It facilitates active participation in learning by displaying over 700 questions with accompanying correct answers and rationale. There are three simulated tests of equal difficulty intended as a pretest, test after chapter eight, and a posttest in chapter 10. It is recommended that questions for specific categories in chapter 10 be answered after that content in discussed in class. Practice questions are in the following categories: the world of the patient and nurse, common theories related to meeting patient's basic human needs, communications and meeting patient's emotional needs, physical assessment, meeting patient's physical safety and mobility needs, hygiene and comfort needs, fluid and nutritional needs, elimination needs, oxygen needs, perioperative needs, microbiological safety needs, needs of the patient in the community setting, administration of medications and pharmacology. This is an excellent book for beginning nursing students to learn techniques of test success and to practice questions related to fundamentals of nursing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Test Success!
I have reviewed and used as a resource, Test Success; Test-taking Strategies for Beginning Nursing Students, 2000 (3rd Ed.). I found this text invaluable in my work with Junior-level BSN students.

This text incorporates the theory background, how to read questions, how to analyze questions, and then provides a wealth of practice questions relating to fundamental nursing skills.

This book begins with the mental and physical conditions for successful test-taking -- things students forget about. Positive mental attitudes, getting enough sleep before a test, and relaxation are a few of the "openers". The focus of this book is on the individual's success and the introductory chapters demonstrate this focus.

The text goes into critical thinking -- and expectations of thinking in nursing school. An indepth review of how to study is covered. This has helped raise a few test scores in my course. Most students never learn how to study. They get by fairly well, but when the assigned reading covers 100 pages of indepth material, they don't know how to organize it or plan for it. This book assists them in organizing the workload of reading and studying.

Test-taking strategies are complete, thorough, and have examples along the way. Once through the materials, students have multiple practice exams (written for Fundamentals students) that allow them to practice their new test-taking skills.

I recommend this book for all beginning nursing students -- LPN, ADN, and BSN! ... Read more

Book Description

The 4th edition represents a major revision of The Medical Word Book. Most of the reviews on this site are for the 3rd edition.

The 4th edition (1500 pages) is still organized by specialty, with words appearing in more than one section if they apply to more than one specialty. The General Surgical Terms section contains primarily surgical hardware. Other surgical terms, like titles of operations, appear in the appropriate specialty section. The Drugs and Chemistry section has been removed, but the Dentistry section has been restored and updated, and a new section, Oncology and Hematology has been added. Neurology and Psychiatry have been separated, and other specialty sections have been expanded and the titles changed. See the table of contents which has changed substantially.

Designed by transcriptionists for transcriptionists, Sloane's Medical Word Book is a must-have tool for anyone creating medical documents.

Coverage of anatomy and general medical terminology as well as 18 medical specialties.

Both phonetic and correct spellings of words are listed alphabetically for rapid access.

16 pages of full-color anatomy plates.

Brand-new sections on Dentistry and Oncology and Hematology.

Previous entries reviewed and thousands added to reflect current medical practice.

Context clues have been added, cross-references are clearer, and numerous terms have been recategorized. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My MT Bible
I have been a medical transcriptionist since 1973. That is when I first started using my first MEDICAL WORD BOOK, by Sloan. I just received the newest edition of this book. Having words categorized by different body systems makes it much easier and quicker to use. Also, I have found words in there that I could not find in other references, because I knew what system of the body it would be in. I have many other references at my fingertips and if I had to choose only one to be on my desktop, this would definitely be it!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not one of my favorite references...
I have been doing medical transcription out of my home for the past four years and have amassed quite a collection of books in that time. This book normally comes highly recommended by other MTs (just see the other reviews), but honestly I was not impressed with it. I would say at least 3 out of 4 times I go to look up a word in The Medical Word Book I cannot find it. As such, I have found myself referring to it much less often; sometimes I give it another chance but more often than not I am left frustrated and have to look elsewhere for my term.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate
I have been a transcriptionist for three-plus years, and I have owned this book for all that time. I honestly cannot recall a single time this book has been helpful. It is a small volume, for a medical word book, being about the size of a thick popular paperback novel, which is wholly inadequate for the monstrously huge field of medical words.

It is separated by specialty, and to give an example of how inadequate this book is, let's just compare the number of pages dedicated to a couple of specialties: For instance, this book gives about 70 pages to ophthalmology, while Stedman's ophthalmology book is 560 pages. The OB/GYN section is about 60 pages, while Stedman's OB/GYN book is over 600 pages.

It's for good reason the sections are so small in this book. For instance, under "orbital" in the ophth section we find 10 entries (orbital apex, orbital cellulitis, etc.). Looking under "orbital" in the Stedman's ophth book we find about 120 entries (orbital abscess, orbital adipose tissue, orbital akinesia, etc.). The MT who hears a hurried eye doc state "orbital akinesia" will find zero help from Sloane. That, obviously, is just one of many such examples I could give.

And, I'll point out, my page totals above for the Stedman's books do not include their multiple appendices, which are also very helpful; this book has no such feature by specialty. I learned quickly that I'd always do better to check my Stedman's specialty word book first, and consequently haven't had reason to use this because it is missing *so much* information.

You get what you pay for. If you need to work independently as an MT, this cheapo approach won't help you much. If you can find any way to lay out a few hundred dollars for a set of Stedman's word books or CDs, you'll be way ahead of the game. I may throw this book into our next garage sale, as it just takes up office space for no good reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for newbies to med trans!
When I first started transcribing in 1980, the first edition of this book was my bible. When I was lost in a black hole of unintelligible doctor-mumble, being able to narrow the terms down to groups of specialties saved the day for me. Now, after 23 years as an acute care MT, I teach full time at a community college and I require this book for my transcription students. Ellen Drake's meticulous edits and additions have at least quadrupled the page count and made it a trustworthy reference. I must admit, though, that as an experienced MT, it would not be the first book I pulled off my shelf when stuck on a word now. Now I usually first turn to the latest edition of Stedman's, the Drakes' latest pharmaceutical reference, or to a word book with extensive terms in a particular specialty. That's because the Medical Word Book is more like a text version of an experienced MT's brain. So I probably wouldn't recommend this for an "old" MT like me -- but newbies will LOVE it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for transcription
This book helped me with vocabulary and pronounciation and it was easy to understand. However, for a more thorough look into anatomy and physiology, I recommend:

This book is an excellent collection of cases that can be classified as "Aunt Minnies", i.e. cases that have a specific diagnosis and you probably won't know what they are, unless you've seen them before. Therefore this book is invaluable for all radiology residents and especially for the oral boards. If there is one book you need to reveiw for the boards, this is it. The book has a concise text of imaging findings and relevent conceptual material for each case, which adds to the usefullness of the book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Small Print
Even people with good eye sight will struggle with this...had I known that I would have got the large print version. As for the thesaurus itself.. it is pretty good. There are a few little code symbols you have to remember and you may have to bounce around the book a bit to get that "perfect" word. It is full of words though and probably a good buy for kids grades 8-12. If it would have had just a little bit larger print I would have rated it 4 stars but being able to read it is an important thing...especially if you have to work on something a little later in the evening when your eyes are slightly strained all ready. ...
