4-0 out of 5 stars excelent
To make it short: this is a very good book on Pediatric care. It includes most info that you will need to work succesfully on the PICU floor. Mainly for nurses, but majority of the text can be of use for neonatal/pediatric respiratory therapists. With a little improvement and a hardbound cover this book deserves a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Pediatric Critical Care
This book has been extremely helpful in my practice as a PCCU nurse. It gives detailed information in an easy to read format for quick reference. I carry it with me always when I go to work. I highly recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars truly disappointed
I recently began working in a pediatric ICU. Although I had 9 years of pedi experience as a floor nurse, I knew I would need a solid reference to help in my transition to the many new procedures and medications I would need to learn. After obtaining this book, I was disappointed by what little it had to offer. I searched for some information on some very basic critical care issues (i.e. CVP) and found it woefully lacking. My only assumption is this text is written with the understanding that you own the larger more detailed book. If you are new to the critical enviroment and need basic, clear information, you may be better served with the larger more informative text. As for me, I will continue to refer to my old general pedi text, which currently is a better source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Pediatric Critical Care
I heard the author of this book at a conference, and KNEW I had to have her manual. She presents relevant information in such a clear, concise, and interesting manner. I will use this book as a teaching aide for my pediatric nursing course.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for all PICU RNs
This book is a must for any nurse working in a pediatric intensive care setting. It is an excellent resource that provides quick answers to questions! I take mine with me to work and it has come in handy numerous times! As a new nurse, I've been told by the more experienced nurses that this book will help me greatly and they were right! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 5 to the 10th Power In Stars
They should really raise the star point system here, because anything by Mosby is worth the buy. I have the Mosby's Medical Dictionary for Nursing and Allied Health Professionals, and when I saw this book in the store, I was trying to figure out the difference, because of the color. This one offers just as many details as my previous book. This is important, because it is an easy read, and it is necessary for each household to have, for children to study off of, to the housewife that just wants to be informed. Mosby has been following me through nursing school, and anything they sell as a study aide will have a place in my home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
I am currently studying to become a medical transcriptionist. I've utilized and compared numerous different medical dictionaries: Dorland's, Taber's, Stedman's, Merriam-Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary, and now Mosby's. Mosby's is an exceptionally fine reference work, and is always accessed first when I need to make an inquiry. Dorland's has the broadest field of definitions, but they have an irritating substition for what have become standard pronunciation guidelines in most collegiate dictionaries. Mosby's pronunciation guidelines mirror the superior trend set by the Merriam-Webster dictionaries, whether medical or standard collegiate. In addition, the Mosby's reference is littered with full-color photographs, illustrations, and useful appendix-type system review supplements in the introduction that provide a more visceral grasp of the subject matter. Like the AMA's 'Encyclopedia of Medicine,' the graphic nature of the text can be alarming, but is appropriate considering the gravity of the material presented. It is priced very reasonably. I keep my Dorland's accessible in case I can't find what I need, but I haven't had to seriously use it. Like the yellow pages, the Mosby's dictionary is 'the one that gets used'!

5-0 out of 5 stars This dictionary makes looking up words fun.
I bought Mosby's because it's easy to read and look up medical terms. I'm learning the language and this book is formatted for easy readability. The numerous illustrations are all in color which I found informative. It's definitely a user-friendly dictionary. ... Read more

This book is an excellent guide for the dental field. It is very well organized and concise, yet very informative. It is very easy to reference topics and the language is very clear. 5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Guide to Diseases
This is an excellent book, pure and simple. It covers a wide variety of diseases, and explains each one well without going into excess and causing "information overload" (as some other medical reference books tend to do). Its format is clear and easily readable. It offers sound clinical and laboratory findings, making it a great resource material for students (such as myself). What impresses me the most is its coverage of the more rare diseases, something often neglected in other texts. I have found it invaluable in my studies, and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Guide to Diseases
This is the BEST medical book to have in your home health care library. I have the second addition and have used it countless time to look up ailments for my family and friends. Although it is written for the medical professional, I find it very readable for a layman like myself. When I became very ill with viral encephalitis, this book helped me understand what was happening to me, how to take care of myself, and to show my family what I was going through so they wouldn't worry. ... Again, I would recomend this book to the non-medical reader as a wonderful reference they will come bact to time and time again. ... And as an author, this text offers good hard facts on medical conditions my fictional characters have. ... Good book, I'm ordering the newest version today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Guide to Diseases 6th edition
The information is given to the reader in segments that are easy to follow and concise in content. It is organized well with contents at beginning of each chapter as well as an index in back of book for more specific topics. This book covers lab findings, signs & symptoms, nursing interventions and nursing diagnosis on each topic as well as much, much more. It does not limit itself to only the most common ailments but includes information on rarer diseases, as well. It has been an invaluable tool in my nursing practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as a teacher and a resource
I used this text for an online course in medical terminology and was more than satisfied with the results. The author structured the book in such a way that it appeals to all learning styles--visual, auditory (using the audio CD or tape), and even movement (using the accompanying CD interactive exercises). Programmed learning is employed by the author and is a very effective way of teaching this "new language." I would recommend this book to anyone entering the allied health fields.

5-0 out of 5 stars _Quick and Easy_ Does It
I once knew a fellow who told me that he spoke only eleven *modern* languages fluently. When he told me, I wished that I could touch his hand and what he knew would osmose to me.

Of course learning a new language is not that easy. And except for the fact that one does not have to learn a new grammar, learning a new terminology is the same. It takes *work*. What can make these learning processes easier is having a teacher who knows how to organize the material so that learning associations come more readily.

There's no osmosis. Peggy Leonard does an outstanding job of organizing the material so that one can most easliy learn medical terminology. _Quick and Easy_ does it. ... Read more

Book Description

This Second Edition incorporates all the most recent developments in the field of neuropsychology, as well as research findings about brain-behavior relations, cognitive psychology, and psychological assessment. It has been considerably expanded and contains several new chapters on test selection administration, preparation of the client, report-writing and informing interview, executive functions, occupational interest and aptitude, and malingering and symptom validity testing. The first four chapters--a framework for conducting an assessment--focus on history taking, test selection, profiling of test results, report writing, and informing the client. The remaining thirteen chapters contain nearly all the tests and assessment techniques covered in the previous edition plus almost the same number of new ones. Some of the new tests included are: Kaufman-Brief Intelligence Test, Mini-Mental State Examination, Weschler Individual Achievement Test, and Design Fluency. For each test the authors provide a thorough description, source and price, instructions for administration, approximate time for administration, scoring procedures, sample score sheets, normative data, and information on reliability and validity. They also discuss when special tests may be of particular use and emphasize clinical techniques helpful in making inferences about the functional integrity of brain regions. An important feature of this compendium is that it does not limit itself to the adult age range, but includes all available norms for pediatric and gerontological populations, as well as neuropsychological tests developed specifically for children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A real masterpiece
Cecil's textbook of medicine has been my favorite internal medicine textbook since my student years, back in 1991. The newest edition (22) features major changes to the book layout, which is very productive and makes reading, studying and even referencing it very functional.

The new edition features more colours than the previous ones, which are used as text "hyperlinks", referring the reader to other chapters and to online contents. The diagnostic criteria for a specific disease and the treatment are included into specific tables, characteristic of the Cecil textbook. This makes it even easier for the student to memorise and understand!

The new e-dition, includes a bonus cd-rom, which includes all the pics and tables of the textbook. They can be searched, categorised and even exported for powerpoint presentations. Excellent!

Furthermore, the reader gets FREE access to the online version of Cecil, at www.cecilmedicine.com At the website, new discoveries in medicine are included wthi highlighted text into the textbook, therefore the book is constantly updated to the latest medical discoveries and trends. You get to have access to your beloved textbook from any place in the world, without the need of carrying it with you.

In short, the new e-dition of Cecil, is a must for medical students, residents and fellows! Look no further, the best medical reference textbook is here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook for Medical Transcriptionists!
This was the required text for my second subject in Medical Transcription. It was very good and detailed enough for the beginning transcriptionist to understand where everything is, and to familiarize yourself with more medical terminology. This one seems to assume you already have a beginning foundation in basic medical terminology and how to form medical words using word parts, combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes. I say this because the first chapter immediately launches into a LOT of these word parts with very little discussion on what they are, how to do them, etc. The book has a detailed glossary of medical words, though, and it has these little cardboard cutouts that look like miniature index cards (flash cards) that will aid you in memorizing basic word parts. The book has very long and detailed exercises at the end of each chapter that builds on what you have already learned and strengthens your medical terminology foundation. It also comes with a CD-ROM that has exercises relevant to each chapter. WHen you complete a chapter exercise, the software evaluates your performance and tells you where your mistakes are, then prints out a study plan for you where you can bone up and read about your mistakes. An over-all good book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book but missing one very important thing?!?!?!?
This is a great learning tool for the beginning transcriptionist. It is easy to read and flows well. I am very excited about the learning opportunity it provides. There is only one very large problem. You need the CD-ROM that should come with the book. This version does not include the CR-ROM. The ISBN # for the same book with the CD included is 0 13 018735 6 and you will have to special order it from Amazon. If you don't you will have to order the CD seperately. Book Description

Here is the 4th edition of the classic book on home birth that introduced a whole generation of women to the concept of natural childbirth. Back again are even more amazing birthing tales, including those from women who were babies in earlier editions and stories about Old Order Amish women attended by the Farm midwives.

Also new is information about the safety of techniques routinely used in hospitals during and after birth, information on postpartum depression and maternal death, and recent statistics on births managed by The Farm Midwives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous- Emphasizing the Emotional Aspect of Birth
I just finished reading this book. I was interested in learning more about natural childbrith and came away with insight into not only the physical but the essential spirtitual and emotional aspects about birth. I really loved the comments about how both partners(mother and father)need to "get it together" emotionally to be prepared for this event. I also enjoyed the the advice not to complain, that your outlook and attituted affects labor. I am glad to see this book wasn't at all sugarcoated, it dealt with complications in birth and death with such dignity and grace as well as highlighting the amazing success rates of natural childbirth. I had no idea when I started reading it that it was about an alternative "hippie" community. Very different from my personal life but I totally respect all of the individuals who made the decision to live such a simple life and focus on the amazing spirituality that surrounds us all in everday life. A definite must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for indipendant pregnant women
I attribute the success of my second and third pregnancies to this book. I first read this book while pregnant with my second son, and was so empowered I decided to have a home birth. Ina May Gaskin and the other women who share thier stories in this book poitray childbirth as a natural event, that our bodies are trained for.
After learning midwifery in the 1970's by hands on experience, with a little guidance from local doctors, they have established a teaching center for midwives arround the country to study at. The approch Ina May uses, is to allow the natural course of events proceede.
I reccomend this book to every expecting woman I meet. I have loaned my copy out to five different women, who all said that the information was far more helpful than complicated medical journals, or the "laymens" pregnancy books which contain little usefull information.

If you want to BE in control of your body, baby and birth, instead of swept up in doctors' busy scheduals-
Read this book, and find a midwife!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Fear Eliminator
I just read the fourth edition of this book (published 2002) and am inspired and relieved. Many women have related the fears associated with giving birth and their doubts about their ability to do it. Whether you go natural or choose another route, you will find this book one that eliminates or greatly alleviates the fears that many, many women have. I felt amazed and inspired by how "down-to-earth" and do-able birthing seems after reading these countless stories. This is not an extremist book and Ina May and the midwives she mentors are the first to advise having a back up plan when circumstances warrant medical attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keep prospective
Ina May Gaskin is wonderful and inspiring. After reading and rereading this book that provides, by the way excellent educational information about childbirth, I was firmly set to have my baby "naturally". I did not have anything to fall on when after 18 hours of labor and 3 of them at 9 cm I was whaling for an epidural.
It is an excellent read, but remember, that this is just one viewpoint, and even if you had an epidural or a c-section, most important thing is that you are alive and so is your baby. So some other books too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!
In a world of technology driven childbirth, this book brings us as women back to the ultimate knowledge: that we have always known exactly how to give birth. Trust your body, trust your baby; trust birthing. Women helping women give birth affirms this basic truth. Get this book! ... Read more
