5-0 out of 5 stars Great Step I book
Much easier read than some of the mountainous question books for Step I. Great companion to First Aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review
Very useful for the IMGs. Contains the majority of informations necessary to pass an exams that requires lots of associations between facts that just need to be memorized. The new edition (2002) has been greatly improved, it is better than other more popular comprehensive reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review for Step 1
This book is so simple to read that I assumed that it could not be comprehensive. After the exam, I realized just how good the book was. The book looks thick but that is only because the charts and diagrams are big and clear and there is plenty of room to add notes. It is an excellent final review of key concepts and details. Much easier to read than First Aid. If you know everything in this book, you are very well prepared for Step 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Boards Step 1 Made Ridiculously Simple
Fantastic review, very well written and presented Easy ,even funny form of presentation makes studying much easier. Absolutely A MUST for USMLE exams. Worth every penny.

Many Americans have wondered why prescription drugs have become so expensive while advertising for those drugs seems to grow exponentially. Former New England Journal of Medicine Editor Marcia Angell has some answers. The pharmaceutical industry, according to Angell, is fraught with corruption and doing a disservice to customers, the federal government, and to the medical establishment itself. In The Truth About the Drug Companies, Angell explains how a huge portion of the revenue generated by "Big Pharma" goes not into research and development but into aggressive marketing campaigns to sell their product. She describes how, even though the drug companies claim that it costs them an average of 802 million dollars per drug to develop new medicines, that figure is obscenely inflated since it factors in marketing as well as expected interest the company would have received had they invested the money in the open market. Meanwhile, Angell says, most of the R & D work is done by colleges and universities funded by the government. There are also problems with the drugs themselves, Angell indicates, since a majority are "me-too drugs", slightly modified versions of existing products which meant to address concerns of consumers most likely to spend money on pharmaceuticals. Thus, the market is filled with remarkably similar drugs to treat depression and high cholesterol while potentially life-saving medicines for diseases afflicting third-world countries are discontinued because they aren't profitable. In the books most damning passage, Angell tells of the high-priced junkets offered to doctors, ostensibly offered as educational opportunities that seem to constitute little more than bribes. The prognosis for reform is a grim one, Angell indicates, due to the massive cash reserves and lobbying efforts of "Big Pharma." Indeed, that lobby was hard at work trying to discredit her claims immediately upon the book's publication. But for anyone who's paid a pharmacy bill, The Truth About the Drug Companies is a fascinating read. --John Moe ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, but with mistakes
As a new nursing student I have found this book very useful. There is a very comprehensive introduction which allows the student to relearn some of the math skills that may have been lost over the year. I also really like the fact that the book comes with a removable laminated card with conversions on it. I'm sure that this will come in quite handy when I begin my clinicals.
My only real complaint is that I have found a couple of mistakes in the fifth edition. I found at least two mistake in the answers provided for the chapter review on apothecaries' measurements. I would recommend that the publisher check their material a little better so as to prevent confusion for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up For Maths for Nurses
A great little book which is user friendly and concise.I would recommend it for any nurse wanting to learn more about drug calculations ! It gets the thumbs up rating !!

I too found this book to be hard to understand at first. I thought I'd never get done with it. I decided not to let a book get the best of me so I really applied myself and soon I had the hang of it. The only thing I would have added to the book is more tests at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Need more like this for all Public Safety Pros!
I have been buying this book for myself since it's first publishing, then end up giving it to someone who needs this more than I do (I speak Spanish). This is a well planned and layed out book for all medical professionals who come in contact with Spanish speaking people whether all day long or infrequently. Rarely is there a translation tool that gets to the point quickly without leaving the medical professional in the dark. In 1999, I went with a relief team to Nicaragua in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. We managed to treat more than 140 patients in three days with the help of this little book! It is easy to understand and to use. You can use the pronunciation or just point to the sentence and you get a straight forward answer. It's that simple! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a medical question that needs to be answered quickly regardless of the profession. We need more books like these for all professions in the public and private sector. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is a great book for any medical professional who feels the frustration of trying to help a Spanish-only speaking patient and fells "tied", and helpless. You don't need to study this book to learn Spanish but rather start using it for history and physical and by time the language will be automatically embedded in your head. I love this book. ... Book Description

Approximately one million Americans per year take high doses of prednisone and related drugs (glucocorticoids) to treat serious illnesses and conditions ranging from asthma to rheumatoid arthritis to kidney disease to organ transplantation. Wile these medicines may have unpleasant, even devastating side effects, including gastrointestinal problems, intense mood swings, changes in hair and skin, and increased susceptibility to infection, they may also be the only treatment available for serious or life-threatening illnesses.

When the world-renowned flutist Eugenia Zuckerman was prescribed prednisone to combat a rare lung disease, she teamed up with her sister, Julie R. Ingelfinger, a well-known specialist in pediatric nephrology and hypertension at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, to write the first ever, comprehensive guide for patients undergoing this difficult treatment.

Packed with everything your doctor didn't have time to tell you, including recipes, exercises, and tips based on personal experience, Coping with Prednisone is an invaluable handbook for health-care workers, caregivers, and especially for patients themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for anyone on long term prednisone theraphy!
A heartfelt thank you to Eugenia Zukerman and Dr. Julie R. Ingelfinger. I read a review of your book "Coping with Prednisone" in the Sunday Parade magazine. Immediately ordered same from Amazon.Com. Ms. Zukerman is the FIRST person I have discovered who suffers from the same disease that I do: Eosinophilic pneumonia, (aka Pulmonary Infiltration with Eosinophilia, or P.I.E.) I was diagnosed in 1987 and in reading Ms. Zukermans account, it could have been me writing the story, almost line for line. I also suffered with the battle of understanding what the Prednisone was doing to me, physically and emotionally, while it was doing it's wonder job of making me better. I thought at times I was crazy, until I begged one of my doctors to get me some help.... "information about side effects of Prednisone". He copied several pages of information from the hospital library, (for doctors only), but at least I had something to compare to, even though it was written in medical terms. I have felt for years that if a patient is on long term Prednisone therapy, detailed explanations should be furnished to the patient, as the side effects of the drug are so varied and at times most devistating. I have been on Prednisone for 12 years. I have learned to live with the side effects, but at times it is extremely difficult. For me, it has become a "trade-off". The prednisone is keeping me alive, so I must accept what else it is doing to me as payment. I have been an M.S. patient for 28 years and in 1991 was diagnosed with S.L.E. (Lupus). However, the Eosinophilic pneumonia has been the most difficult and devistating disease of the three. Unfortunately in my case, the eosinophilic infiltrates only stay at bay when the dose is 5mg. or higher. 60mg. needed to control a major flair of the eosinophilia. I would appreciate very much if Amazon.Com would forward this letter to Ms. Zukerman's publishers and request that they send it along to her. It is very comforting to know that one other person has this rare malady and has experienced many of the same things that I have. I wish I had had this book to read in 1987. It would have made coping with prednisone so much easier!

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought I was alone in my Prednisone Side Efeects
I was looking for a book to help explain the side effects from the prednisone, that I've been on for the last 14 year's due to asthma that I have had my entire life. None of the doctor's were willing to give up the answer for some unknow reason. When I started read this wonderful book I said to myself, Oh My God, someone actually wrote a book on everything I was wondering about. The more I kept reading the more I understood how to deal with this awful but life saving drug. I wish I could say thank you to Eugenia and Julie in person. I belong to two asthma chat groups online through the internet. I have recommended this book to everyone. And mostly everyone has baught the book. Although I may never be able to get off steroids, as I've been told by my doctor's at least I have a better understanding about Prednisone. I recommend this book to everyone with asthma and other illnesses that require prednisone. It's the best book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must Read
I have ITP....a blood platelet disorder and am on steroids. Steroids do many strange things to the body. This book was an unbelieveable mirror of my side effects on and coming off Prednisone. I found myself talking to the book saying right on, you got it, and thank you for acknowledging my pains.
I can't speak for everyone, because everyone experiences different things with this steroid, but, I can tell you that the information will not hurt you and most of all the message that all this is temporary and can be beaten with some coping skills will make live on Prednisone far better. I've read chapters of this book 4 times to keep reminded of my plight...I am a chronic ITP patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Prednisone
My husband was put on massive doses of prednisone without being told what side effects or consequences the drug would bring. The doctors who prescribed the medicine didn't even know what to expect. My husband had horrible side effects. Finding this book was a life saver for it verified and explained every symptom my husband experienced. We no longer felt alone, someone else knew and described what he was and would be going through. We are thankful this book was written for it gave us laymen knowledge of this horrific/wonder drug, and how we should handle the side effects. Needless to say we immediately sent a copy to his doctor as well. If you are on even the smallest doses of pred. this book is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars For long term pred users, this book is a MUST
I was diagnosed with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura this past year, and am going through my second round with pred. This book is a must have for those of us faced with daily doses of this drug, and who face months, if not years, on it at a time. When I first was placed on .5mg/pound daily, I thought I was losing my mind. Nope, it was just the pred. Thank gosh for this book, I thought I was going to have to be committed to a nut hut. Not only does this book tell you the "NORMAL" side effects, it tells you how to deal with the side effects, and if a side effect is hard to deal with (like insomnia) the author tells you the best times to take your pred, and other hints to help gear the pred around your life. NOT having the pred dosage run your life.

This is also a book to have for the family of pred users, I am going to have my husband read it next, because it gives an accurate description of what one person feels on pred, it can help others who are close to the pred user also. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Tool for Caregivers
"This must be a mistake! How could his drug costs rise from $150 per month to $1101 in just three weeks?" My hand shook while I read the pharmacy bill.

The bill was accurate. In only three weeks at an Alzheimer's care unit, my father's drug expenses had soared an incredible 734%. And, the way I saw it, his quality of life had decreased about the same percentage. Walking and talking when he entered, he now spent his days in a wheelchair, unable to walk and drugged, in a constant stupor.

"I've got to do something." The thought repeated over and over in my head. "How can this be?" Then a quick trip to the grocery brought the help I needed. It came in the form of a thick paperback book, The PDR Pocket Guide to Prescription Drugs.

The PDR Pocket Guide provides tons of information for all prescription drugs currently on the market. Information includes:

a. generic equivalents,
b. why the drug is prescribed,
c. how it should be taken,
d. when it should not be taken,
e. side effects and special warning, and
f. possible interactions with other drugs and food.

The PDR is available through Amazon.com, or you may find a copy like I did at your local grocery or bookstore. Jam-packed with almost 1700 pages of information, this paperback is a surprisingly affordable $6.99.

Using the pharmacy's bill as a list of medications, I read the PDR report for each drug my father was using. What I found astonished me.

Two of fifteen drugs prescribed were being used "off-label." One was specifically contraindicated for use with Alzheimer's patients. Two others were from drug families that I had previously pointed out in my father's list of allergic reactions.

Without this "pocket" guide, I'd never have understood what was happening to my father.

Get one today. Use it. It could save the life of someone you love dearly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book for your ACLS class!
I am an RN and I recently passed the ACLS course given at my hospital. It was a two day course that was more of an overview of the information than a teaching session. I work on a floor with very sick patients, but we rarely have a code situation. I wanted to take ACLS in order to feel more comfortable when a code does take place. If I had not done as much preparation before the course as I did, I doubt I would have passed. This book helped me immensely to prepare for the class and understand all the information needed. Deffinately get this book before the classes take place, because there is so much information in the study guide and you don't want to go into information overload. As far as I know, this book contains the most up to date information from the ACLS authorities. Get this book and Dale Dubin's "Rapid Interpretation of EKGs" for your next ACLS course, especially if it is the first time you're taking it. Good Luck!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry. so so
If you are senior resident or higher in emergency medicine or internal medicine, this books seems to be too superficial for you. And most importantly it didn't reflect fully 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG'- milestone in the resuscitation medicine: various opinions, arguement and final consensus on the basic life support, newly changed tachycardia algorithm, management of atrial fibrillation, amiodarone in pulseless VT,VF and so on- in you wanna see more exactly, do 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG' and annals of emergency medicine appendix booklet printed in 2000. all that changed will affect and change text sooner . but on the other hand, this book has nice advantages - easily readable and well-organized, detail explanation of pitfall and pearl in basic life support and good discussion themes and self-test question. Recommend for starter , ACLS instructor (manual) or physician not related with resuscitation field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the AHA book
I am an ACLS and ACLS-EP instructor and highly recommend this book. Much more details than the AHA textbook, has an index, and is well written. Actually has a picture of WPW arrythmias, discusses Cardiac Glycosides as well as other things that an effective clinician needs to know. Honestly, if the AHA would let us, I would use this as the text instead of the official one. Unlike the official text this one is clear, has EKG's, and is helpful. If you are teaching ACLS this text is a MUST. If you are taking, this text is extremely helpful. If you have this, and read this, you will do much better than the rest of the class when it is time to test.
If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would give it a 7. (The AHA textbook is a 2)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great supplement to the AHA ACLS provider manual
I bought this book because the AHA book just didn't have enough info for me. This book is very easy to read and gives tons of information which really helps put the total ACLS picture together. If you plan on taking ACLS or just want to know more about the hear this is a great book to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent ACLS resource
I'm a SICU nurse and I highly recommend Ms. Aehlert's book. It is by far the best book you will find on the market that will get you ready for ACLS. It's much better than the AHA course book for ACLS. This is an excellent resource and has now become an indispensable part of my reference library. I'm not a novice; I just completed my 4th ACLS class with excellent results, thanks to this book. Buy it before you take ACLS and you will not be disappointed. ... Read more
