Book Description

The interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter in the frequency range between 10-6 and 1012 Hz is the domain of broadband dielectric spectroscopy. In this extraordinarily extended dynamic range molecular and collective dipolar fluctuations, charge transport and polarisation effects at inner and outer boundaries take place and determine the dielectric properties of the material being studied. Hence, broadband dielectric spectroscopy enables one to gain a wealth of information on the dynamics of bound (dipoles) and mobile charge carriers depending on the details of a molecular system. It is the intention of this book to be both an introductory course to broadband dielectric spectroscopy as well as a monograph describing recent dielectric contributions to current topics. In this respect the book will correspond to the needs of graduate students but also to specialized researchers, molecular physicists, polymer scientists and materials scientists in academia and in industry. ... Book Description

The successful development, operation, and maintenance of a process analyzer is a multi-disciplinary effort. It involves production chemists, analytical chemists, process engineers, and plant operatives. Accordingly, a team of authors was culled from many specialties of both the industrial and academic sectors for Spectroscopy in Process Analysis to addresses the attributes, requirements, and applications of spectroscopic techniques using a variety of novel approaches.

The ten articles focus on unique techniques - UV-visible, near-infrared, mid-infrared, mass, and Raman spectroscopies, and more - as each applies to spectroscopic disciplines. The authors present magnetic resonance techniques, chemometrics, and considerations of sampling and engineering. Supplementing more general works on process analytical chemistry, the volume concentrates on the current state of spectroscopic technology and how to most usefully apply it in process analysis.

Cost and time effectiveness are increasingly important to process spectroscopy. Whether your goal is quality assurance or monitor and control, proper use of current knowledge is critical for success. Spectroscopy in Process Analysis provides the valuable information you need to optimize the use of the latest technological advances. ... Read more

Book Description

Beginning in the 1960s, scientists across a wide range of disciplines cooperated in developing unbiased—or assumption free—stereology, based on stochastic geometry and probability theory, as a way to estimate the parameters of irregularly shaped objects without introducing bias. In recent years these new estimation techniques, which were originally quite painstaking and time consuming, have made a great deal of headway in disciplines such as neuroscience, thanks in part to the development of computer software for their application. Prestigious journals and grant-giving organizations now require the use of unbiased stereology in the projects that they support, and this trend is expected to continue.

Principles and Practices of Unbiased Stereology will fill a need in the biomedical community as a clear, user-friendly introduction to this area for the increasing number of scientists who need to learn these techniques for their research. The work moves logically from a discussion of the historical background of stereology to full explanations of terms, concepts, and tools, with the latter part of the manuscript devoted to typical stereology designs. An associated web site will feature color illustrations and video clips demonstrating stereological techniques. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book
Principles and Practices fills a much needed niche-- this book excels at introducing beginners to stereology and is sufficiently advanced that more experienced scientists will find themselves using it for reference. The most interesting and useful feature of this book is its organization. Beginning with an historical perspective, the reader learns the importance of stereology as a separate field, as well as its recent impact on the biological sciences. The author does an excellent job of providing pertinent information instead of overwhelming with formulas and jargon. Dr. Mouton's treatment of bias and error is superb; I find myself referring to it frequently. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars labeling with colloidal gold conjugates
It is an excellent handbook for electron microscopy. Book Description

From the Preface: There has been a great upsurge in interest in light microscopy in recent years due to the advent of a number of significant advances in microscopy, one of the most important of which is confocal microscopy. Confocal microscopy has now become an important research tool, with a large number of new fluorescent dyes becoming available in the past few years for probing your pet structure or molecule within fixed or living cell or tissue samples. Many of the people interested in using confocal microscopy to further their research do not have a microscopy or even a cell biology background, and so not only do they find considerable difficulty in obtaining satisfactory results with a confocal, but they may be mislead by how data is being presented. This manual is intended to teach [its readers] the basic concepts of microscopy, fluorescence, digital imaging, and the principles of confocal microscopy so that [they] may take full advantage of the excellent confocal microscopes now available. This manual is an excellent reference source for information related to confocal microscopy for both beginners and more advanced users. The main emphasis in this manual in on the laser scanning confocal microscopes used in biology. However, a variety of related imaging technologies are briefly introduced as a comparison. ... Book Description

This textbook gives a comprehensive survey of the analytical treatment of MRI physics and engineering. It gives readers the background needed to cope with the problems that arise when applying MRI in medicine or when (sub)systems or sequences for new applications are designed. Special attention is paid to the treatment of intrinsic artifacts of the different sequences, which can be described in a mathematically uniform way for the different scan methods. The book contains many images, especially showing specific properties of the different scan methods. The methods discussed include RARE, GRACE, EPI, and Spiral Scan. This 2nd edition has been expanded in response to recent developments. In various places the treatment is refined. The chapter on motion and flow is expanded, and a new chapter is added, describing the configuration theory and its use in the understanding of multi-pulse sequences such as BURST, TSE and FFE. A.L. Luiten gives an overview of the early history of MRI imaging.

FROM THE REVIEWS:

APPLIED MAGNETIC RESONANCE "An advantage of this book is that it presents quantitative description of many practically used procedures, quantitatively describes reasons for different artifacts and how to avoid them, many aspects of the theory of MRI are illustrated with numerous experimental images. The book contains many interesting practical examples which will be of great help for users of MRI technique. I believe that this book will be very useful and instructive for all users of magnetic resonance imaging both for medical purposes and material science studies." ... Read more

Book Description

Western philosophers have traditionally concentrated on theory as the means for expressing knowledge about a variety of phenomena. This absorbing book challenges this fundamental notion by showing how objects themselves, specifically scientific instruments, can express knowledge. As he considers numerous intriguing examples, Davis Baird gives us the tools to "read" the material products of science and technology and to understand their place in culture. Making a provocative and original challenge to our conception of knowledge itself, Thing Knowledge demands that we take a new look at theories of science and technology, knowledge, progress, and change. Baird considers a wide range of instruments, including Faraday's first electric motor, eighteenth-century mechanical models of the solar system, the cyclotron, various instruments developed by analytical chemists between 1930 and 1960, spectrometers, and more. ...
