Best Introductory-Level Textbook
Dr. Murphy constructs a solid foundation on the basic concepts of geometrical optics, light, and color, and then provides excellent introductory reviews of important topics in light microscopy. The book is very well written and complex phenomena are clearly explained without the unnecessary math that often confuses students. Illustrations are numerous and help support the text very nicely, as do the suggested laboratory exercises that accompany each chapter. Discussions of digital cameras and image processing are timely and provide the essential concepts necessary to tackle more advanced treatises. In the opinion of the Molecular Expressions microscopy website team, this book is by far the best entry-level textbook in the field.

Good reference book
This is a very complete introduction book to laser spectroscopy. The thing I like best about this book is clarity. The author lays down basic principles of a set-up in one or two pages, supplemented with illustrations. First 5 chapters are about instruments. Then it is followed by 9 chapters of introduction of different types of laser spectroscopy. The last chapter contains several real-life applications of spectroscopy.

The difference between 2nd and 3rd editions is small. I think only about 10-15 sections are changed. Very few changes in the first 12 chapters. Among the new stuffs, CRDS and frequency combing seem interesting. I skipped the update on the last chapter. I think there is no need to buy the new edition if your cash supply is limited.

Good reference book on spectroscopy
This book contains most of the optical spectroscopic methods currently used. A highly recommended book for anyone who wants an introduction to research level spectroscopic methods.

Contemporary book on X-ray scattering
Before this book came out, the bible of the scientists in the field was either Guinier's or else, Warren's book on X-ray diffraction (both books by Dover). I think Jens Als-Nielsen's book will replace these as far as introduction to the field is concerned, because the other two books (especially warren's black book) are pages of equation after equation. Elements of Modern X-ray Physics, in contrast, is much more readable (it has colors even... wohooo). Also it covers recent techniques suxh as scattering from liquid interfaces that were not covered in previous books. Trade-off is that the book does not cover any crystallography. Author's say in the preface that they feel there are other adequate books on this subject (guinier's book prevails).

Excellent EM primer
I actually had the opportunity to receive instruction from Prof. Bozzola in both Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and acquired the book for those reasons. It is not common to find even a textbook with such well-detailed instructions from beginning level to advanced for a myriad of topics in the field. Of course, there is a very significant focus on biological applications, so some portions of the book are not entirely relevant to materials science folks like myself. This book covers the basics of optics, sample preparation, imaging, photography and film developing, and specifics about both TEMs and SEMs. This book is a very good investment for anyone intending to perform work with such instruments.

A brilliantly explained text
A brilliantly explained text containing extremely good applications, and above all, clear and well-referenced recipes. Most pitfalls in microscopy are the result of not following optimal processing conditions. After reading Dr. Hayat's present publication, there is no excuse for not following well-tested reliable protocols.

A ready made computational lab - all your own
There is a considerable body of theory behind Atomic Force Microscopy/STM. In how it works, and in the modelling of the potential energy at a surface under study. This can be a problem for those who want to use an AFM, and who might perhaps be new to the field. At the modelling level, the book shows the multitude of possible models, and their associated parameters, that can be used. This presents an obstacle. Because typically, you have to start by building those computational model code bodies from scratch, based on guidelines in books or papers.

This is especially a problem if you are an experimentalist, where your interests are not necessarily in modelling.

Sarid does the reader a huge favour. By offering not just equations, but functional code, implemented in a Mathematica framework, that you can tweak to your delight. Basically, the book and its website give you a computational lab, fully equipped.

The present data collection is intended to serve as an aid in the interpretation of molecular spectra for the elucidation and confirmation of the structure of organic compounds. It consists of reference data, spectra, and empirical correlations from 13C and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), mass, and ultraviolet-visible (UV/vis) spectroscopy. It is to be viewed as a supplement to textbooks and specific reference works dealing with these spectroscopic techniques. The use of this book to interpret spectra only requires the knowledge of basic principles of the techniques, but its content is structured in a way that it will serve as a reference book also to specialists. Chapters 2 and 3 contain Summary Tables and combined tables of the most relevant spectral characteristics of structural elements. While Chapter 2 is organized according to the different spectroscopic techniques, Chapter 3 provides for each class of structural elements spectroscopic information obtained with various techniques. These two chapters should assist users that are less familiar with spectra interpretation to identify the classes of structural elements present in samples of their interest. The following four chapters cover data from 13C NMR, 1H NMR, IR, and mass spectroscopy, and are ordered exactly in the same manner by compound types. These cover the various skeletons (alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alicyclic, aromatic, and heteroaromatic), the most important substituents (halogen, single-bonded oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and carbonyl), and some specific compound classes (miscellaneous compounds and natural products). Finally, a spectra collection of common solvents, auxiliary compounds (such as matrix materials and references) and commonly found impurities is provided for each method. Not only the strictly analogous order of the data but also the optical marks on the edge of the pages help fast cross-referencing between the various spectroscopic techniques. Although currently, UV/vis spectroscopy is only marginally relevant to structure elucidation, its importance might increase by the advent of high throughput analyses. Also, the reference data presented in Chapter 8 are useful in connection with optical sensors and the widely applied UV/vis detectors in chromatography and electrophoresis. Since a large part of the tabulated data either comes from our own measurements or is based on a large body of literature data, comprehensive references to published sources are generally not included. Whenever possible, the data refers to conventional modes and conditions of measurement. For example, unless the solvent is indicated, the NMR chemical shifts were determined usually with deuterochloroform or carbon tetrachloride as solvent. Likewise, the IR spectra were measured using solvents of low polarity, such as chloroform or carbon disulfide. Mass spectral data were recorded with electron impact ionization at 70 eV. While retaining the basic structure of the previous editions, numerous new entries have been added. Altogether, the amount of data has been more than doubled. The section on mass spectrometry (MS) is entirely new and contains a unique collection of fragmentation rules for the various compound classes. As a new feature, prototype IR spectra for each class of compounds schematically show the analytically relevant absorption bands. The Combination Tables of the earlier editions have been extended and arranged in two chapters, the first organized according to band positions and the second according to compound classes. The enclosed compact disc contains programs for estimating 13C and 1H chemical shifts of organic compounds containing up to 15 non-hydrogen atoms. Both programs are available for Windows and Macintosh systems and require a Java environment for the graphical structure input. Technical details about the requirements and installation procedures are given in the corresponding ReadMe files. Extensive help files are available as part of the programs. In addition, the structure generator Assemble 2.0 (also limited to 15 non-hydrogen atoms) is available for Windows systems.
