Book Description

Over the past decade the sediments of many rivers, lakes, and estuaries have been contaminated by inorganic and organic materials. Contaminants from sediments, under certain conditions, can be released into overlying waters. Thus, sediments may be an important source of contaminants to waters in which littoral and atmospheric contaminants have been reduced or eliminated.Often found in aquatic sediments, metals are exposed to many reactions, such as sorption and precipitation, and are greatly influenced by the redox conditions in the sediment. The reactions - usually over a period of time - reflect biotic processing as well as chemical transformations. This book describes these important processes. Metal Contaminated Aquatic Sediments outlines advances in environmental chemistry, effective new modeling techniques, applications for biological treatment, and cycling and transport of trace metals in sedimentary environments. Each chapter contains a detailed reference section that draws upon a stunning array of sources. The book includes many figures and tables that illustrate the process under discussion.Features ... Read more

Book Description

Precambrian Crustal Evolution of China integrates the theory of plate tectonics, structural geology and petrology to identify the tectonic and metamorphic environment in different stages of development of the Archaean and Proterozoic crust. Further, the evolution of the Precambrian atmosphere and hydrosphere is approached by using geochemical data and traces of life. For the first time, the results of the study of the Precambrian geology of China are made available in English to scientists and students not having access to the huge amount of Chinese literature. ... Book Description

The book provides acoustic images about sedimentary systems of the shelf edge, slope and deep-sea-floor. The knowledge gained can be used by both academia and hydrocarbon industry in a better understanding of continental margins and the processes shaping them. It is also of interest to colleagues in earth sciences involved in margin surveys for environmental studies. The current global trend in marine resource development is to move into deeper water, and this book can provide examples relevant to other passive margins around the world. ... Read more

Book Description

This textbook describes the physics of the plastic deformation of solids at high temperatures. It is directed at geologists or geophysicists interested in the high-temperature behaviour of crystals who wish to become acquainted with the methods of materials science in so far as they are useful to earth scientists. It explains the most important models and recent experimental results without losing the reader in the primary literature of materials science. In turn the book deals with the essential solid-state physics; thermodynamics and hydrostatics of creep; creep models and their applications in the geological sciences; diffusion creep; superplastic deformation and deformation enhanced by phase transformations. Five concluding chapters give experimental results for metals, ceramics and minerals. There are extensive bibliographies to aid further study. ... Read more

Book Description

This comprehensive reference is the first to cover industrially important borates, from deposits, through chemistry, mining, processing, and applications. The reference work begins with a listing of the 238 currently known borate minerals, their formulas, and properties. It features modern theories on the origin of borate deposits, their molecular structure and detailed descriptions of the world's borate deposits. Garrett describes the fascinating history of the discovery and development of borate deposits with anecdotes of how resourceful operators overcame obstacles in obtaining their minerals. Chapters on mining technology and processing detail the mineral's development from the earliest recorded times up to the sophisticated operations of the present day. The book also contains a comprehensive literature on boron isotope chemistry, their diverse applications, and productions and resource statistics for the world's largest industrial producers.

* Functions as a complete reference for geologists, engineers, and consumers of borate products
* Includes crystallographic descriptions, solution chemistry, isotopic distributions, and other properties of 170 borate minerals
* Provides detailed descriptions of mining and processing methods and economic uses
* Includes statistical data on borate production, consumption, prices, and ore reserves for every country of the world
* Provides an extensive bibliography
* Author is an authority on industrial minerals through many years of consulting and process development work

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll soften up to this one.
After just the first few pages, I was pleasantly surprised. Liked the famous twenty mule team on the cover and inside.

Borate deposits have played significant roles throughout history. Since ancient times, people have used borates to make everything from glass to laundry detergent-- Egyptians used borax, the most famous of the borates, to mummify their dead-- and because these minerals have such a variety of uses, their availability often determined the fate of whole economies. Today, borates are essential in the production of an array of products, including boric acid, enamel, ceramics, Geiger counters, and high-tech superconductors. However, the processes of their formation and mineralogical extraction are not generallly known. The Borate Handbook addresses the need for a comprehensive handbook on this important industrial mineral. Dr. Garrett's unique chemical engineering background and flair for history have allowed him to integrate information about the major borate deposits in the world with a discussion of their socio-political impact throughout the ages. The scope and detail of the book is unequalled in the literature. ... Read more

Book Description

This book consists of three main parts. Part A is a short practical guide into crystal optics, because the principal use of the polarizing microscope and the recognition of all distinguishing optical features like morphology, colour in thin section, pleochroism, cleavage, twinning, refraction index, birefringence, extinction angle, optical character, optical orientation, dispersion etc. are the requirements for the identification of the common rock-forming minerals in thin section. Part B gives a detailed description of the characteristic optical features, special features, and the paragenesis of the most common rock-forming minerals. This chapter is divided into opaque minerals, isotropic minerals and amorph substances, uniaxial minerals with a positive character, uniaxial minerals with a negative character, and optical biaxial minerals. Most of the described minerals are illustrated by typical microphotographs or black-and-white drawings. Part C contains identification tables for the rock-forming minerals, diagrams for the international classification of the magmatic rocks, black-and-white drawings of typical textures of minerals and petrofabrics of rocks. ... Book Description

This book is based on the 1997 Kongsberg seminar, organised by the Department of Geology at the University of Oslo. The seminar brought together scientists from various disciplines involved in the study of growth and dissolution of minerals and pattern formation in geosystems. The volume includes several chapters dealing with non-equilibrium growth processes and pattern formation, which have recently become recognised as much more common in geological systems than hitherto thought. The multidisciplinary context of this book will promote cross-fertilisation of ideas in a rapidly developing area that has a wide range of important applications in mineralogy and petrology as well as in other areas of science and technology.Audience: This volume will be of interest not only to a wide audience within the geoscience community, but also to scientists working in related disciplines interested in mineral growth and dissolution processes in general and the coupling of such processes with transport and deformation in sedimentary and metamorphic systems. ...
