Book Description

Microtectonics is the interpretation of small-scale deformation structures in rocks. These structures are studied by optical microscope and contain abundant information on the history and type of deformation and metamorphism in a rock and are, therefore, used by most geologists to obtain data for large-scale geological interpretations. This CD contains all the materials from the Microtectonics textbook, including text, boxes on special subjects, an extensive glossary and numerous photographs and explanatory drawings. In addition to what is given in the textbook, all drawings are in colour on this CD. There are also colour photographs of microstructures and many videos, such as animated line drawings and virtual microscope images. The CD is suited for independent use during optical studies on microstructures, as a reference manual and as a tool for short courses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all structural geologists
To understand structural geology is to understand strain and deformation, especially at a microscopic level. The book expands upon elementary concepts in kinematics and material science to effortlessly explain the formation of fabric during deformation. Has lots of figures and explanations. The authors could have gone deeper into strain theory, but this treatment is available in Passchier's (and others') academic papers. ... Read more

Book Description

This book presents the second volume of a complete development of the new structural classification of minerals, which is based on the internal crystal structure, and is therefore its natural classification. Because of the large domain of the mineral kingdom, this work is divided into three volumes, in which the minerals are ordered from the structurally simple to the more complex.

Audience: This work will be of particular interest to teachers and research workers in mineralogy, and in inorganic crystal structures in academia. ... Read more

Book Description

This book discusses the controls and consequences that processes in the Earth's mantle have on mineralising events in the crust. In developing this theme, the author takes into consideration recent advances in the theory of mantle plumes and examines the links, direct or indirect, that past and present plumes activities have in generating ore systems. Also included is an overview of the major volcanic features of terrestrial planets, and their possible origin in terms of plume-related magmatism. The book provides a time--space global overview of the relationship between mantle processes, associated igneous activities, such as the impressive continental flood basalts and the emplacement of layered igneous complexes, and the formation of metalliferous deposits. The links between mantle plumes and mafic--ultramafic igneous activity are treated in some detail and are followed by descriptions of selected, world-class, magmatic mineral deposits. The relationship between mantle plumes and hydrothermal mineral deposits is less obvious, nevertheless this topic is considered by examining the inception of continental rift systems, associated basins and the flow of fluids, which is catalysed by thermal gradients induced by mantle upwellings. Examples of metalliferous deposits that are typically associated with thick volcano-sedimentary or sedimentary sequences, which accumulated in modern and ancient rift-related basins, are discussed. The book concludes with a review of metalliferous mineral deposits hosted by black shales, iron and manganese formations, and the possible link that these remarkable geological entities have with mantle plumes.

Audience: This book is intended for a broad audience of readers including postgraduate students specializing in ore deposits geology, volcanology, and tectonics. This volume will also be of interest to professionals and specialists in the mineral exploration and mining industries. ... Read more

Book Description

A seemingly simple fable of two children lost in a glittering landscape, is eloquent in its innocence but is imbued with an awareness of the fragility of life. This is a wintry story of village life in the high mountains but also a parable of belief and faith. The rock crystals of the title are the shards of ice of the glacier that dominates the landscape. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a delightful, well-written triffle worth your time
While this is subtitled "A Christmas Tale", this wonderfully written story is a story of belonging in a small, isolated community - a wonderful gift that is set at Christmas. Two aspects of the story make this a memorable bit of literature: First, the discription of the physical setting and the small details making the village unique, isolated and realistic are superb. Second, the understanding of human group behavior is outstanding - both in the definition of "outsiders" and in the common story required to become an "insider". This aspect is established early and confirmed by the climax of the story.

Excellent writing, excellent control of characters, interesting and simple plot ... well worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!
This is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. The story is simple: A boy and a girl get lost in the mountains on their way home; it's Christmas Eve, and the two are somewhere in the Alps. What makes the books so unique is the way in which the children's ordeal is described: They are moving through a landscape that is made almost abstract by the snow; this is pure poetry! - Stifter is a forgotten genius of 19th century European literature; I'm glad that his touching Christmas Tale - and ideal Christmas present, by the way - is now available in this beautiful edition! ... Book Description

Introduction to Industrial Minerals introduces the reader to the subject of the new mineral raw materials that our society demands. Itemphasizes the way in which, in order to satisfy the consumer, the requirements of industry control mineral exploitation, and the way fundamental mineral properties are exploited for particular applications. It describes aggregates, industrial clays and raw materials for the chemical industry. The need for high temperature processing is addressed with a chapter on interpretation and use of mineralogical phase diagrams and time-temperature-transformation diagrams. These are then applied in separate chapters on the manufacture of glass, cement, brick clays and refractories. Evaluation of geological reserves is described in the context of computer modelling of deposit quality, and the final chapter considers the use of a site after extraction, emphasizing the requirements for waste disposal. ... Book Description

Stressing the fundamental solid state behavior of minerals, and emphasizing both theory and experiment, this text surveys the physics and chemistry of earth materials. The author begins with a systematic tour of crystal chemistry of both simple and complex structures (with completely new structural drawings) and discusses how to obtain structural and thermodynamic information experimentally. Dr. Navrotsky also reviews the quantitative concepts of chemical bonding--band theory, molecular orbit and ionic models. She then covers physical properties and relates microscopic features to macroscopic thermodynamic behavior and treats high pressure phase transitions, amorphous materials and solid state reactions. The author concludes with a look at the interface between mineral physics and materials science. Highly illustrated throughout, this book fills the gap between undergraduate texts and specialized review volumes and is appropriate for students and researchers in earth science and materials science. ... Book Description

Rock Magnetism is a comprehensive treatment of fine particle magnetism and the magnetic properties of rocks. Starting from atomic magnetism and magnetostatic principles, the authors explain why domains and micromagnetic structures form in ferromagnetic crystals and how these lead to magnetic memory in the form of thermal, chemical and other remanent magnetizations. The phenomenal stability of these magnetizations, providing a record of plate tectonic motions over millions of years, is explained by thermal activation theory. One chapter is devoted to practical tests of domain state and paleomagnetic stability; another deals with pseudo-single-domain magnetism. The final four chapters place magnetism in the context of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, and extraterrestrial rocks. This book will be of great value to graduate students and researchers in geophysics and geology, particularly in paleomagnetism and rock magnetism, as well as physicists and electrical engineers interested in fine-particle magnetism and magnetic recording. ...
