4-0 out of 5 stars An open response to your comments
I must admit, Amazon.com has a huge audience The review below has drawn a mixed response. While a few appreciated the review, many said that Professor Khan missed the opportunity of producing a 5-star book. A few pointed to readily seen typos in the book. At least one person called the inclusion of my own book here uncalled for.

All I have to say is this. Please feel free to write your thoughts here on Amazon.com. If you think a review by S.K. Jain is a piece of trash, or a book is good or not good, say so -- this is a free world. A positive review is just as good as a negative one -- both are two sides of one coin. Each helps us understand the coin.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lucid presentation
As the book arrives in your hands from Amazon.com, what you find striking is detailed descriptions of Mroz model, theory of finite deformations, and crystal plasticity.

The book discusses in detail the stress-strain laws of classical plasticity which can be grouped under two headings following Mroz et al.(1991,1996): Single surface plasticity with integral hardening rule and multisurface plasticity with Mroz translation rule. In the first catagory, the book presents the models of perfect plasticity, the isotropic and kinematic hardening models of Prager, Frederick-Armstrong and Chaboche, and the endochronic model. The integral hardening rule with von-Mises yield function is the endochronic theory of Valanis(1980) as presented by Watanabe and Atluri(1986) and is discussed in great detail in this book. Such a presentation has not appeared in any other textbook todate. In the second catagory, the book presents the two surface plasticity model of Dafalias and Popov(1975) and the integrated hardening model of Mroz(1967) at length.

What I like about the book most is its coverage of the concepts of irreversible thermodynamics as they pertain to the theory of plasticity. The book stops short of unifying various models through this framework of thermodynamics.

Finally, please permit me to say, my book on plasticity can be very useful in understanding some very advanced concepts presented in "Continuum Theory of Plasticity." Thank you. ... Read more

Book Description

Much of the current interest in shock compression of porous solids stems from the desire to bond hard, refractory powders into strong and dense solids. However, while much is known about the effects of shock compression on monolithic materials, the unusual physical and chemical processes that take place when a porous medium is shocked have been little studied thus far. This volume -- with contributions by leading researchers in condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, and materials science -- begins to address that gap. The focus is on heterogeneous deformation mechanisms, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and chemical processes. The contributions discuss such topics as modeling the complex interplay of thermal, mechanical, and chemical processes; experimental data on pore collapse and their interpretation; and synthesis of new materials through shock-induced chemical reactions. By presenting not only the most recent results, but also the open questions that remain, these essays convey the excitement of developing a scientific basis for understanding shock compression of highly porous solids. Topics covered include > Shock Compression Science in Highly Porous Solids > Shock Loading of Porous High Explosives > Continuum Mixture Modeling of Reactive Porous Media > Two-Phase Media Model of Shock Compression with Chemical reaction > Constitutive Modeling of Shock-Induced Reactions in Powder Mixtures > Discrete-element Modeling of Shock Processes in Powders ... Book Description

Advanced Mechanics of Materials bridges the gap between elementary mechanics of materials courses and more rigorous graduate courses in mechanics of deformable bodies (i.e., continuum mechanics, elasticity, plasticity) taken by graduate students. Covering both traditional and modern topics, the text is ideal for senior undergraduate and beginning graduate courses in advanced strength of materials, advanced mechanics of materials, or advanced mechanics of solids. Rather than exclusively emphasizing either fundamentals or applications, it provides a balance between the two, teaching fundamentals while using real-world applications to solidify student comprehension.Advanced Mechanics of Materials features: DT applications to contemporary practice DT use of modern computer tools, including Mathcad DT an introduction to modern topics, such as piezoelectricity, fracture mechanics, and viscoelasticityChapters two through five cover theoretical and conceptual development and contain relatively simple examples aimed at enhancing student understanding. The remaining chapters apply the theory to specific classes of problems such as: DT beam bending, including the effects of piezoelectricity DT plate bending DT beam and plate vibration and buckling DT introductory concepts of fracture mechanics DT finite element analysisThe authors assume that students will have an understanding of elementary (statics, dynamics, strength of materials) and intermediate (aircraft structures, machine design) mechanics. ... Book Description

Hardbound. The term "photomechanics" describes a suite of experimental techniques which use optics (photo) for studying problems in mechanics. The field has been in existence for some time, but has always lagged behind other experimental and numerical techniques. The main reason for this is that the interpretation of data, which whilst providing whole-field visualization, is not in a form readily amenable to the end-user.Digital image processing has become common within the photomechanics community. However, one approach does not fit all, and subtle variations in technique and method have been developed by different groups working on specific applications.

This primer enables the user to get started with their experimental analysis quickly. It is based on the universally popular MATLAB® software, which includes dedicated and optimized functions for a variety of image processing tasks. These can readily scripted, along with the necessary mathe ... 1-0 out of 5 stars His other thermo books are bad, so is this one
Like others have said before me, thermodynamics is hard enough without Gaskell's weak attempts to make it even harder. He has the ability to make the difficult the uncomprehendable. I wouldn't use any of his books if they were given to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a new edition
First, who is Robert R. Rice? As I understand it, Dr. Gaskell, wrote the book himself - Robert Rice is a non-entity. Second, all of the reviews for this edition ( the fourth) refer to the third edition. All of the errors found in the third edition have been corrected in the fourth edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars best materials thermo book available....
Gaskell is a critical component to the library of any Materials Scientist. Study it once, study it twice, and then pull it off the shelf often during your professional career. A solid professor can highlight the most critical components of the text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be worse... could be better
This is not a good book. It's full of errors.

Of course, the other thermo books out there (DeHoff, Lupis, Swalin) are much worse. At least Gaskell's explainations make a little sense.

Read this book for the concepts; read another when you want accurate equations, graphs and tables.

1-0 out of 5 stars Materials Science & Metallurgical student from Michigan Tech
Thermodynamics is already a hard enough subject to learn. If you want to learn thermo this is the wrong book for you. Gaskell confused my whole class so much that we hardly even used this book, fortanetly we had a good professor that was able to make sense of what Gaskell had to say. There are so many errors in this book that it is pathetic not just in the answers but also in the tables that Gaskell provides. Gaskell himself came and lectured our class this term. Luckly for him it was early in the term when we were just starting to use the book, if he had came in later in the term he would have been beaten senseless with this horrible book. ... Read more

Book Description

Porous materials are of scientific and technological importance because of the presence of voids of controllable dimensions at the atomic, molecular, and nanometer scales, enabling them to discriminate and interact with molecules and clusters. Interestingly the big deal about this class of materials is about the "nothingness" within — the pore space. International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) classifies porous materials into three categories — micropores of less than 2 nm in diameter, mesopores between 2 and 50 nm, and macropores of greater than 50 nm. In this book, nanoporous materials are defined as those porous materials with pore diameters less than 100 nm.Over the last decade, there has been an ever increasing interest and research effort in the synthesis, characterization, functionalization, molecular modeling and design of nanoporous materials. The main challenges in research include the fundamental understanding of structure-property relations and tailor-design of nanostructures for specific properties and applications. Research efforts in this field have been driven by the rapid growing emerging applications such as biosensor, drug delivery, gas separation, energy storage and fuel cell technology, nanocatalysis and photonics. These applications offer exciting new opportunities for scientists to develop new strategies and techniques for the synthesis and applications of these materials.

This book provides a series of systematic reviews of the recent developments in nanoporous materials. It covers the following topics: (1) synthesis, processing, characterization and property evaluation; (2) functionalization by physical and/or chemical treatments; (3) experimental and computational studies on fundamental properties, such as catalytic effects, transport and adsorption, molecular sieving and biosorption; (4) applications, including photonic devices, catalysis, environmental pollution control, biological molecules separation and isolation, sensors, membranes, hydrogen and energy storage, etc. ... Book Description

This volume contains papers based on the workshop "Energy and Information Transfer in Biological Systems: How Physics Could Enrich Biological Understanding", held in Italy in 2002. The meeting was a forum aimed at evaluating the potential and outlooks of a modern physics approach to understanding and describing biological processes, especially regarding the transition from the microscopic chemical scenario to the macroscopic functional configurations of living matter. In this frame some leading researchers presented and discussed several basic topics, such as the photon interaction with biological systems also from the viewpoint of photon information processes and of possible applications; the influence of electromagnetic fields on the self-organization of biosystems including the nonlinear mechanism for energy transfer and storage; and the influence of the structure of water on the properties of biological matter. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent blend of theory and practice
This is a well-written, beautifully presented, useful and interesting book. It explains how materials scientists can analyse and characterize microstructures in 3D materials, using modern statistical methods from 'stochastic geometry'. The authors are respectively a mathematical statistician and a materials scientist. The exposition is excellent, and goes all the way from basic theory to practical applications, including free software on their web site. The presentation is a good balance of theory, verbal explanation and practical examples. The illustrations and diagrams are very effective, and include some superlative 3-D pictures. The software is nicely presented and explained, also in relation to the equations. The topics covered include basic stereology, texture characterisation, digital image measurement, covariance and spectral techniques, size and shape distributions of particles, spatial arrangement of objects, and polyhedral single-phase microstructures. I found only a few tiny typos so far. Well worth the hardback price - and the hardback binding will take a beating before I'm done with it! ... Read more

Book Description

Impact mechanics is concerned with the reaction forces that develop during a collision and the dynamic response of structures to these reaction forces. The subject has a wide range of engineering applications, from designing sports equipment to improving the crashworthiness of automobiles. This book develops several different methodologies for analysing collisions between structures. These range from rigid body theory for structures that are stiff and compact, to vibration and wave analyses for flexible structures. The emphasis is on low-speed impact where damage is local to the small region of contact between the colliding bodies. The analytical methods presented give results that are more robust or less sensitive to initial conditions than have been achieved hitherto. As a text, Impact Mechanics builds upon foundation courses in dynamics and strength of materials. It includes numerous industrially relevant examples and end-of-chapter homework problems drawn from industry and sports. Practising engineers will also find the methods presented in this book useful in calculating the response of a mechanical system to impact. ... Read more

Book Description

The new science and technology of the incredibly small-and what it means for our future. Our lives are about to be changed by new technologies that operate on a scale too small to be seen by even the most powerful optical microscopes. Devices measured in nanometers-billionths of a meter-have set off a nanotechnology revolution. In Travels to the Nanoworld, Michael Gross takes us deep into this miniature universe and describes natural processes and new technologies that will make modern machines look like relics from the Stone Age. Starting with the model of the living cell, whose vital processes are directed and carried out by structures with dimensions on the nanometer scale, Gross shows how biochemists are beginning to understand the mechanisms of the "nanotechnology of nature." Soon science will have the knowledge and technology to generate artificial systems that will perform similar tasks, and through them will find new treatments for disease, substitutes for toxic waste, and alternatives to carbon fuel. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars WHAT'S NEW HERE?
The crux of the problem is that Gross can't take us on a tour of the picoworld, the femtoworld or the attoworld where the real mechanics of the nanoworld must lie hidden. Depending on the reader's background this book could range from being a big bore to being quite interesting. Most of his speculation about nanotechnology is borrowed from Drexler. If you've read Drexler there is no point in rereading it here. However briefly, he does warn that this fiddling in the nanoworld could result in ultimate bacterial weapons and freaky humans. Boiling down the message-much of Gross' nanoworld tour consists of illustrating activity within cells and bacteria. He is like a man looking at a bird in flight and saying, "Look, man can fly too." When he goes off on tangents like the blue rose, the green genes and pressure squeezed eggs the reader realizes he is grasping at straws.

Much of the book explains how x-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and laser pulse photography are used to magnify and stop the action occurring within the animal cell. In this way he reduces life, the cellular processes, to those like message transmission, transport, protein folding, and protein synthesis /catalysis. He speaks of the new fields of biotechnology and genetic engineering to change the DNA blueprint but that is what evolution has been doing for billions of years. What's new here beyond splicing into the bacteria's DNA to create drugs like insulin or frost proof vegetables?

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool, man
Gross by name, but, thankfully, not by nature. This is an excellent introduction to miniature machinery, in the realms of both nature and technology. An ideal accompaniment to Ken Dodd's "Voyages to Knotty Ash: Diddymen and their clown cars"

2-0 out of 5 stars Nanotechnology? Well.
Not exactly dealing with "nanotechnology". You can imagine the contents judging from the title, "nanoworld". Overemphasizes biological systems and gives some examples that are not related to nanotech. You will get a broad, "shallow" understanding of what has been done and is going on in a science field called chemistry.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to nanotech.
This book was a relatively quick read. It covers most of the basics without burying the novice (like myself) in the wealth of details in some of the more advanced books on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent overview
This book gives an overview of the exciting world of invisibly small things, be they natural or technological. Nature is shown to be the best engineer on the nanoscale, but human engineers are beginning to learn the lesson. While some of the contents are scientifically explicit, there are goodies for curious readers on all levels of understanding. ... Read more
