5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Just what I needed!
hi guys! You really want a juicy piece of the Fiber Optic world? well this is the book you were craving for... This is an outstanding book that guides you through the basic, fundamental and still practical knowledge of Fiber Optics... I highly recommend this book if you are to implement fiber optic systems... this book shows us when, how and why we must implement fiber... nice job Jeff!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for learning the Fiber Optics.
The fourth edition of this book is a product of many years of practical experience and trials of previous editions. I always wondered if more information than just reader's level as beginner, intermediate and advanced should be printed on the technical books. What you are looking for in a book and level of satisfaction depends on your involvement in that area of expertise. Please stay with me while I try my thinking on this book. If you are already an expert working in Optical Engineering field this book is not a research paper. Probably you need Warren J. Smith's book Modern Optical Engineering. If you are a student learning about Fiber Optics this book has enough information and practice questions to be qualified as a good text book, but may not be enough for your Graduate School research thesis. If you are like me, a practicing Network Engineer or technician, this book provides everything you need to know and more than enough information. It is written in an easy to understand style, and chapters are in a perfect sequence and length. That's why I am rating it 5 Stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for starters
A very good starting point. Allows you space to build on what you read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is C.H.L really Jeff Hecht?
C.H.L.'s attempt to justify Hecht's misinformation is a bit weak

1. The G.711 recommendation is probably 30+ years old and the US telephone companies have adhered to it since ratification. In fact, G.711 simply confirmed what the US and European companies were already doing so the US telephone companies were using 64Kbps for voice even before G.711.

2. Packet switching has nothing (or very little) to do with voice. Voice is carried via circuit switched channels.

3. When voice is carried via a digital channel in the US (at 64Kbps, I might add), one form of signaling "steals" the low order bit of an 8 bit voice sample of each sixth sample of the 24 channels on a DS-1 (AKA T-1) circuit. Because of this, a data channel carried over one of these 64Kbps channels is only able to provide 56Kbps. Maybe this is where Hecht went wrong.

But don't buy or not buy Hecht's book based on this one error (in the big scheme of things it's fairly small). The real problem with the book is that it just doesn't do a jood job of explaining optical communications. A better defense of Hecht's book might be that Hecht was attempting to write about all of the uses of optical fiber and not just communications. ... Read more

Book Description

Laser cooling allows one to slow atoms to roughly the speed of a mosquito and to control their motions with unprecedented precision. This elegant technique, whereby atoms, molecules, and even microscopic beads of glass, can be trapped in small regions of free space by beams of light and subsequently moved at will using other beams, has revolutionized many areas of physics. In particular, it provides a useful research tool for the study of individual atoms, for investigating the details of chemical reactions, and even for the study of atomic motion in the quantum domain. This text begins with a review of the relevant aspects of quantum mechanics; it then turns to the electromagnetic interactions involved in slowing and trapping atoms, in both magnetic and optical traps. The concluding chapters discuss a broad range of applications, including atomic clocks, studies of ultra-cold collision processes, diffraction and interference of atomic beams, optical lattices, and Bose-Einstein condensation. The book is intended for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students who have some basic knowledge of optics and quantum mechanics. An extensive bibliography provides access to the current research literature.

FROM THE REVIEWS

THE PHYSICIST "A strong recommendation for any book in one's own field is to see it written the way you would have written it. This is certainly the case here. If you are a researcher or a teacher in laser cooling and trapping or a related field of atomic, molecular, and optical physics, then this is a "must buy" text for your bookshelf. Any buy one for your students too, because your copy will inevitably disappear."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get a good understanding of laser cooling.
Laser cooling and trapping techniques have given researchers new tools to explore the atom's dynamics and control. The book gives a good introduction to the forces that arise when an atom interacts with a light (laser) field, and puts a lot of emphasis on giving the reader an excellent idea of what's going on when atoms and photons interact.

Rather than giving all the details of the mathematical and quantum mechanics background that is needed to understand the subject the authors concentrate on giving a clearer picture of the real physics involved.

The book starts with a review of the quantum mechanics principles used to understand laser cooling and trapping, which serves as a good remainder for a person who already has a basic grasp of it.

Although all the mathematical analysis that shows how the formulas and mathematical expressions are derived is not done in the book, the presentation is sufficient to guide the readers interested in it do the work by themselves.

The book also has an excellent reference guide that an interested person can use to get all the mathematical and experimental details on the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elements of Photonics
In sixteen chapters in two volumes, "Elements of Photonics" by Keigo
Iizuka exhibits his passion for teaching the facts about light, the
devices with which one controls it, and the mathematics by which to
express its behavior. The book has careful definitions and step by
step explanations beautifully illustrated. It builds its mathematical
parts on a basic knowledge of Maxwell's equations and the Fourier
transform which the reader is assumed to possess; however, the
mathematical exposition never loses touch with the laboratory, and
explanations in terms of basic geometry are offered side by side with
the more mathematical exposition.

A great strength of the book is the definition of terms one finds
in the photonics literature.Another is that many topics
are presented from both a simple geometric point of view and
a more mathematical point of view, so the reader can choose
how to learn. A third is the wealth of superb drawings and diagrams.

The author's preface gives a helpful orientation and the index is
complete and well organized as an aid to using the book as a reference
book.

When I tried using the book to learn about lithium niobate phase
shifters I found the explanation so good that I started using
"Elements of Photonics" as the first place to resolve the
many mysteries that I encounter in working my way into photonics.

So far it has exceeded my expectations on three out four other topics
that I tried. While the field of photonics offers quantum effects and
complex interferometers omitted in this book, for a foundation in
photonics "Elements of Photonics" is head and shoulders the best
available.

The chapters are in volume I are:
Fourier Optics: concepts and applications.
Boundaries, near-field optics, and near-field imaging.
Fabry-Perot resonators, beams, and radiation pressure,
Propagation of light in anisotropic crystals
Optical properties of crystals under various external fields

Polarization of light
How to construct and use the Poincare sphere
Phase conjugate optics

Volume II contains:
Planar optical guides for integrated optics
Optical waveguides and devices for integrated optics
Modes and dispersion in optical fibers
Detecting light
Optical amplifiers
Transmitters
Stationary and solitary solutions in a nonlinear medium
Communicating by fiber optics;

In addition, there are three appendices:
PIN photodiode on an atomic scale
Mode density

Organized by lasing media-solids, liquids, and gases-each section is subdivided into distinct laser types. Each type carries a brief description, followed by tables listing the lasing element or medium, host, lasing transition and wavelength, operating properties, primary literature citations, and, for broadband lasers, reported tuning ranges. The importance and value of the Handbook of Lasers cannot be overstated. Serving as both an archive and as an indicator of emerging trends, it reflects the state of knowledge and development in the field, provides a rapid means of obtaining reference data, and offers a pathway to the literature. It contains data useful for comparison with predictions and for developing models of processes, and may reveal fundamental inconsistencies or conflicts in the data. ... Read more

Book Description

Paperback. Ellipsometry is a unique optical technique of great sensitivity for in situ non-destructive characterization of surface (inter-facial) phenomena (reactions) utilizing the change in the state of polarization of a light-wave probe.Although known for almost a century, the use of ellipsometry has increased rapidly in the last two decades.Among the most significant recent developments are new applications, novel and automated instrumentation and techniques for error-free data analysis.

This book provides the necessary analytical and experimental tools needed for competent understanding and use of these developments. It is directed to those who are already working in the field and, more importantly, to the newcomer who would otherwise have to sift through several hundred published papers. The authors first present a comprehensive study of the different mathematical representations of polarized light and how such light is processed by optical s ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique in its kind
This book is a very good guide of how to use ellipsometry to probe interfaces and thin films (one can measure film thicknesses with an outstanding resolution). It shows that the simple fact that a change in the polarization of light can be a good probe for several systems (such as film growth and liquid-liquid interfaces). I would have liked however, if there were some information of how one can measure mechanical properties of a thin fluctuating liquid film using phase modulated ellipsometry.

I liked the book and is my bible whenever I want to do such experiments.

Book Description

This work shows that information is at the root of all fields of science. These fields may be generated by use of the concept of "extreme physical information" or EPI. The book greatly expands the material in Physics from Fisher Information to include many other areas in science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarifying physics
"Physics from Fisher Information" is a unification, indeed. The author derives the physical laws for such different fields as quantum mechanics, classical electromechanics, general relativity and statistical mechanics from the single powerful principle of Extreme Physical Information (EPI). This principle probably goes deeper than merely a mathematical similarity between the laws, which as such already helps to grasp the full picture of physics. Personally, I think it's a pity this clarifying book was not written yet when I was a student of physics. To miss this book, is to miss something essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written and important, but keep math texts handy
This is a compilation of Roy Frieden's work in major physics journals over the last decade deriving the basic laws of physics - relativistic quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, gravitation, statistical thermodynamics - from a quantity (used by mathematical statisticians and by hardly anyone else) called Fisher Information. He derives the Klein-Gordon equation, Schroedinger wave equations, Maxwell's equations, DeWitt-Wheeler law of quantum gravity, and various statistical thermodynamics laws. Whew. Basically, while folks have focused in the past on Shannon information and entropy (all global measures), Frieden's worked on Fisher information which is a local measure (e.g. based on a derivative). Optimization of functionals of Fisher information gives differential equations as results, which become laws of physics. Cute.

Anyone with a Bachelors in Engineering would have been exposed to enough physics to understand what Frieden has done. The mathematics is at senior-level math/grad level engineering level. Well-written and not at all cryptic, Frieden goes out of his way to motivate his arguments. In fact, Roy spends 100 pages in preparation and discussion before he even gets to his first real derivation.

Operations Researchers (like me), Applied Mathematicians, EE Control Theory types and Statisticians will find the mathematics pretty comfortable...even if we don't understand all the physics implications. Philosophical types with strong math backgrounds can profitably wade through the text just to get a flavor of his arguments.

Cambridge *really* wanted to publish this textbook. They even included Frieden's umm..errr...interesting pencil sketches of himself and other luminaries. Check out the New Scientist archives for an article in January 1999 on Frieden's work.

One warning. This is *not* light reading. Those looking for the "Tao of Fisher Information" will have to wait for some of us to write a pop sci version of his work. If you want to get a feeling for Frieden's work before you buy the book, read the articles "Estimation of distribution laws, and physical laws, by a principle of extremized physical information", Physica A, 198 (1993) 262-338 or "Lagrangians of physics and the game of Fisher-information transfer", Phys Rev E, 52(3), Sept 1995, 2274-2286.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fisher knowledge is the only knowledge
With my advanced copy of this wonderful book, I can truly say that all physics ends here. I foresee every field of science laying down their texts and proclaiming this one as the end all be all. A must read for anyone. ... Read more
