5-0 out of 5 stars bible for photonics engineers
This book is a masterpiece. The book is a great tutor whether you are a novice or an expert in the field. Great attention has been paid to detail (which is illustrated in the fact that you will find almost no typos in the book). Many different topics such as gain calculation, reflectors, waveguides, etc. have been comprehensively treated at both a qualitative and quantitative level. This leaves the reader with not just the methodology for computing parameters for lasers using equations, but also an intuitive understanding of the physical phenomena involved in making the calculations (via the qualitative analysis). The authors provide a unique perspective to many a phenomena that have been routinely treated by other texts. This is definitely one book for the archives!!!

A comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of optical detection theory

Laser system applications are becoming more numerous, particularly in the fields of communications and remote sensing. Filling a significant gap in the literature, Optical Detection Theory for Laser Applications addresses the theoretical aspects of optical detection and associated phenomenologies, describing the fundamental optical, statistical, and mathematical principles of the modern laser system.

The book is especially valuable for its extensive treatment of direct detection statistics, which has no analog in radar detection theory and which has never before been compiled in a cohesive manner in a single book. Coverage includes:
* A review of mathematical statistics and statistical decision theory
* Performance of truncated and untruncated coherent and direct detection systems using Huygens-Fresnel and Gaussian beam theories
* Rough surface scatter and atmospheric propagation effects
* Single-pulse detection statistics for direct and coherent detection systems

Book Description

When the first edition of "Optical Interferometry" was published, interferometry was regarded as a rather esoteric method of making measurements, largely confined to the laboratory. Today, however, besides its use in several fields of research, it has applications in fields as diverse as measurement of length and velocity, sensors for rotation, acceleration, vibration and electrical and magnetic fields, as well as in microscopy and nanotechnology.

Most topics are discussed first at a level accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of physical optics, then a more detailed treatment of the topic is undertaken, and finally each topic is supplemented by a reference list of more than 1000 selected original publications in total.

* Historical development of interferometry
* The laser as a light source
* Two-beam interference
* Techniques for frequency stabilization
* Coherence
* Electronic phase measurements
* Multiple-beam interference
* Quantum effects in optical interference
* Extensive coverage of the applications of interferometry, such as measurements of length, optical testing, interference microscopy, interference spectroscopy, Fourier-transform spectroscopy, interferometric sensors, nonlinear interferometers, stellar interferometry, and studies of space-time and gravitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book for lasers.
This book is definately not for the novice. This book covers a large amount of material in its 777 pages. I got this book as an undergraduate for an advanced optics survey course. It was a little sparse on the explanations for an undergraduate. In graduate school however, this text has come in handy a number of times to fill in the gaps from other books or in heavy-duty problem solving. His coverage of gain saturation, broadening and line-widths I thought were especially usefull, as well as his coverage of the ABCD matrices. All in all, a must-have for your optics bookshelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant layout, but cops out when things get subtle.
The layout of this book is very pleasant. Nice, clean typography. The presentation is informal without sacrificing accuracy. However, the author seems to have a bad habit. When the explanation is straightforward (ie the reader can probably figure it out on his/her own), he does a fine job of explaining. When explanations are really needed, he relegates them to the problems. For example, in the sections dealing with the density matrix formalism, he assigns in the general formulation a characteristic decay constant to each energy level. So when it comes to working out the two-level problem, he should explain why he can justifiably "simplify" the problem by assigning a single decay time constant to the population difference between the two levels, instead of perserving the two different decay constants. This is one of the more subtle points in the whole density matrix presentation, yet he weasels out of the situation by leaving it to the problems section. The same pattern is repeated in the part where a comparison between the results of rate equations and density matrix are made. When it comes time to really point out the reason for the validity of the rate equations, he relegates it to the problems again. This is unfortunate, since a proper explanation would clearly demonstrate true insight into the physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Intermediate/Advanced Understanding
This is an excellent book for those intend to major into Laser Physics with emphasis in practical, theoretical and modelling sides of Laser Physics but I agree that this book would be very tough for those who start learning Physics. But the mathematics is elegant with emphasis on the real world.

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked this book!
I thought this book was an excellent reference. The explanations are clear. I must admit that some equations seem to be inadequately justified, but not to any greater extent than many other undergraduate texts, such as Eisberg and Resnick (the quantum book). This book went into the right amount of mathematical depth for someone like me who just wanted to get the 'big picture' for my thesis and not worry too much about the details. Much, much better than the books by Chow, Koch and Sargent, and Thompson.

I might add that I am a physics major and thus have had considerable background in electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. Perhaps lack of background is why the Stanford engineer felt that the book was too hard.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's a bad book
Yes! It's the worst book I've ever read. The author is lazy enough and/or does'nt have a good pedagogic ability not to give any explanation to any formula or equation. Furthermore, there are quite many misprints, what is not aceptable for a technical document. ... Read more

Book Description

This book is the first to address the field of structurally integrated fiber optic sensors. Fiber optic sensors embedded within materials and systems are able to measure a variety of parameters (i.e. temperature, vibration, deformation, strain, etc.) that allows for real time non-destructive evaluation. Examples include the following: monitoring structural fatigue in aging aircraft or loads in bridge structures. In more advanced applications, fiber optic sensors control actuators that allow materials to adapt to their environment. This gives rise to the names, "smart," "intelligent," and/or "adaptive" materials or structures.
Structural Monitoring with Fiber Optic Technology is the firs single author book on the new field of fiber optic structural sensing. As such it provides: coverage of the fundamentals of the technology, a coherent and systematic discussion on the most important aspects of the subject, a broad view of the subject, while retaining a degree of focus on those advances most significant in terms of their future potential, particularly in regard to broad implementation of the technology. The book provides an introduction to the relevant value to structural monitoring. It also highlights the advantages of fiber optic based sensors over conventional electrical measurement technology.
The book richly illustrates the subject matter with 615 figures and provides many examples of fiber optic structural sensing, including a detailed overview of a number of major field site applications. Most of these large scale applications are drawn from the civil engineering community as they have been the first to strongly embrace fiber optic structural monitoring. This is especially true for bridges, where innovative new designs and the use of fiber reinforced polymer composite materials to replace steel represents a major advance that is expected to revolutionize the construction industry. Examples include new bridges, which are serving as testbeds for these new materials and are instrumented with arrays of fiber optic structural sensors. In one case, this state-of-the-art monitoring system permits engineers at a distant site to track the response of the bridge to traffic loads and keep an eye on the long term performance of the new materials. Fiber optic structural sensing technology is equally applicable to other industrial sectors, such as the aerospace and marine industries. Indeed, several examples of ships being instrumented with arrays of fiber optic sensors are also included.

* The author directed one of the leading laboratories in the development of this technology and its application to civil engineering
* Provides a strong, concise foundation in the basics of the technology
* Includes many examples of the application of the technology, including many major field site case studies
* Richly illustrated with 615 figures, many redrawn to make them easier to understand; also includes over 600 references
* Written in a style designed to help the reader unfamiliar with fiber optic technology appreciate what can be accomplished with this new form of structural monitoring

Why is the sky blue? Why do mountains glow in the dark? Is the darkest always before the dawn?

An ideal reference to have on hand in answering questions such as these, Color and Light in Nature is an endlessly fascinating exploration of phenomena that are familiar to us all, but that even trained scientists take for granted. Take the question of why stars twinkle, for instance: twinkling, astronomers Lynch and Livingston observe, is strongest with stars that are low in the sky, and then on a clear and windy night, when starlight passing through the atmosphere encounters little pockets of turbulence that bend its rays "momentarily away from our eyes." Sunlight undergoes similar distortions, yielding mirages, "blinks," sundogs, halos, rainbows, "mountain light," and other wonders of nature, all of which the authors describe and explain in clear and accessible prose.

Lynch and Livingston encourage their readers to seek out and study these phenomena for themselves, writing, for instance, "No effort should be spared to witness at least one total eclipse in your lifetime." They go on to make a good case for why that should be so, and why the workings of light and color should be of interest to students of science. Their book is a lively companion and teacher. --Gregory McNamee ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible book!
I have thoroughly enjoyed this treasure of a book. Wonderful, clear text and beautiful photographs to illustrate all phenomena described! This would be a terrific read for anyone interested in science, physics, and nature. Definitely worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable account of light in nature
This book is intended for people who are intrigued or awed by the way light is expressed in nature. It describes many natural phenomena involving light, including shadows, the color of the sky, clouds, mirages, halos, rainbows, the effects of ice in the atmosphere and much more. The intended audience in my eyes consists mainly of people who like physics but the beautiful color full-page pictures and tips on taking them also make this book a great resource for anyone interested in photography. Even physics students can benefit from this book (although it is intended for laymen, so no equations are used) - the book shows them interesting manifestations of optics in nature. The book also makes a nice gift for people who enjoy nature and would like to know how it "works". Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars Erudite and Encyclopedic but Extremely Expensive
I've used the hardback Palik & Ghosh as an occasional reference work for years, because it's very good, and has chapters on most of the materials I've needed to work with--metals, silicon, and oxide dielectrics of one sort or another. Obviously a lot of work went into it, and it's a pretty specialized business, measuring and tabulating optical properties.I'd give it 5 stars for content, no doubt about it--an orchid for the editors: for their part of the deal they deserve our praise and thanks.

The set gets about one star for value, because it's priced like a last-minute airline ticket--those who need it sufficiently badly will pay.The publishers want something getting on for a grand for 5 books, and *two and a half grand* for the same thing in software, which costs nothing to reproduce!For most people, the abbreviated tables in recent editions of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics are better than good enough, though it would be great to be able to afford Palik and Ghosh.

If the price ever comes down by a factor of three, I'd probably buy the books, but it would take a factor of 10 before I'd consider the software. ... Read more
