Desurvire (24), Giles (11), Zyskind (7), Olsson (4), Simpson (2) and Becker (2). In terms of global authorship, combining first and co-author contributions, the numbers are : Desurvire (38), Simpson (38), Giles (22), Zyskind (18), Becker (14) and Olsson (13). The high number of publications for J.R.Simpson reflects the fact that he has co-authored 29 papers with myself as first author, including the very first one. I leave it to analysts to conclude from the above data as to wherever the action was happening during these important years. The second folder of the critic is about noise figure definition and development. Here again, the critic exhibits ignorance. The work from the Bell labs core team, as sketched from the above statistics, rapidly led to an optimal EDFA design, which was transferred to the submarine-cable area, for a success that is over-documented. Actually, the floppy-disk EDFA model offered in the B-O-S book is based upon the theory developped by C.R.Giles and myself. It is also extensively used in amplifier simulation software by suppliers and compagnies worlwide, as being generic and accurate. The critic gives me credit for the noise figure definition, which has since become a standard. It is brought to his kind attention that the issue, after all these years yet, is important enough to mobilize top MIT experts with possible consequences for standards in the technology. As a conclusion to help re-orienting the critic's future, I will say first that you cannot create a start-up from the integration of any book's knowledge (no matter how good, accurate and applied, no matter how many books), because this is not what is expected from start-up " entrepreneurs ". Second, actual expertise in optical communications requires sweat mind work, not sweet talking at job-interview time. Finally, short of experience and appreciation, please keep respect to the generations of enginers at Bell Labs, and elsewhere in Europe and Japan, who paved the way to the Internet technology with their combined touch and visions.---- (*) source : " H.R.D.Sunak, Bibliography on EDFAs : 19987 to 1990, EDFA consultants publisher, Kingston, RI, 1991 ", p.163.
Desurvire remains 'The Bible' for serious EDFA scientists and Engineers alike.

Book Description The book is divided into two parts: The first part focuses on present technology and here leaders in each field describe the underlying principles behind each technology. The authors then enumerate the types of applications for which it has been tested, provide opinions about the advantages and disadvantages of the biosensor and philosophize on future developments using that particular biosensor. The second part deals with the science for future technology developments including four different methods for producing new recognition elements (genetic engineering of proteins, chemical synthesis,

Book Description Over the past fifteen years, significant developments have been made in utilizing quantum attributes of light and matter to assume unprecedented control over the dynamics of atomic and molecular systems. This growth reflects a confluence of factors including the maturation of quantum mechanics as a tool for chemistry and physics, the development of new laser devices increasing our ability to manipulate light, and the recognition that coherent laser light can be used to imprint information on atoms and molecules for practical purposes. Written by two of the worlds leading researchers in the field, Principles of the Quantum Control of Molecular Processes offers a systematic introduction to the fundamental principles of coherent control, and to the physics and chemistry necessary to master it. Designed as both a resource for self-study and as a graduate textbook, this survey of the subject provides a step-by-step discussion of light-matter interactions along with coverage of such essential topics as: Both authoritative and comprehensive, this first in-depth treatment of coherent control is destined to become the standard reference in an increasingly influential field. PAUL W. BRUMER, PhD, is University ProfessorTheoretical Chemical Physics and holds the Roel Buck Chair in Chemical Physics at the University of Toronto. He received his BSc. from Brooklyn College and his PhD from Harvard University. MOSHE SHAPIRO, PhD, is the Jacques Mimran Professor of Chemical Physics at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel, and a Professor of Chemistry and Physics at the University of British Columbia. He received his BSc, MSc, and PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The authors are among the cofounders of the field of coherent control. They have published extensively on this and related subjects in chemical physics, and have received numerous awards and worldwide recognition for their research contributions.

Book Description This book is intended for students in the visual arts and for others with an interest in art but with no prior knowledge of physics. It presents the science behind what and how we see-that is, it presents the science of light. It emphasizes phenomena rather than theories and the joy of discovery rather than the drudgery of derivations-that is, the presentation is the opposite of "heavy science." The text considers such questions as - why is the sky blue? - what is the nature of light? - how do mirrors and prisms affect the color of light? - how do compact discs store music and information? - what can visual illusions tell us about the nature of perception? and it discusses such topics as - the optics of the eye and camera - the physiology of the eye and the nature of color vision - the different kinds of sources of light - photography and holography - symmetry in art and nature - color in printing and painting - computer imaging and processing It includes numerous problems, questions for discussion, and suggestions for simple experiments, many of which can be done at home.
