Book Description

Erbium Fiber Amplifiers is a comprehensive introduction to the increasingly important topic of optical amplification. Written by three Bell Labs pioneers, the book stresses the importance of the interrelation of materials properties, optical properties, and systems aspects of optical fiber amplifiers.
The floppy disk included with the book contains a PC based educational version of the sophisticated commercial amplifier simulation package OASIX (sold by the Specialty Fiber Group of Lucent Technologies). This powerful numerical simulation software allows one to simulate the performance of a real erbium fiber amplifier, and obtain its properties such as signal gain and noise generated. Several parameter sets are included, each of which represents a commercially available type of erbium doped fiber usedin different kinds of amplifiers (e.g. preamplifiers and power amplifiers). The user can vary, via Windows based input screens, various amplifier characteristics such as fiber length, pump power, signal power, and additional signals. The output is savedin a file which can be read by any spreadsheet or plotting package for graphical representation of the results. The software allows the reader to explore on his or her own the concepts of amplifier performance discussed in the book, and gain a more intuitive and interactive educational experience leading to a richer understanding of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers and their applications.

Key Features
* Includes a software disk with a PC-based amplifier simulation tool derived from a sophisticated commercial package (OASIX), which allows the reader to gain an interactive educational experience using parameters for commercially available erbium-doped fibers
* Explains the theory of noise in optically amplified systems in an intuitive way
* The book contains a discussion of components used in amplifier fabrication and of the attendant technologies used in real systems
* The book provides basic tools for amplifier design as well as systems engineering, including the latest developments in WDM and soliton systems

5-0 out of 5 stars A book with brief theory and a lot of pratical examples
The book covers the most issue of EDFA, from components used in EDFA to optical system, even simulation software (I have used the software, but it is not easy to learn and not flexible for EDFA design). It seems to me, the authors have deep experienced working background in this field. There are a lot of practical examples. It is a very good reference book to my work (optical fiber system engineer). The authors give a brief and clear theoretical description, just to reminder your knowledge. It is toll; I like this style and would like to recommend it as the best book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way closer to the facts
As the author of " EDFAs : principles and applications", I have been dismayed by a courageous anonymous statement "Way better than Desurvire's tome", recently posted under the form of a review of the Becker-Olsson-Simpson book. My goal is not to review the book, which I find to be an excellent introduction to the field. It is to respond to some statements made by the critic, which have little to do with facts and history. Concerning first the "invention" of the EDFA, it is wiser to leave the debate to international awards committees and foundations, and to stay away from outsiders' gossips. Addressing the issue of co-authorship is much easier. During the so-called EDFA-pioneering period,1987-90, Bell Labs has released 52 papers (*). Accordingly, 52 investigators have been " first authors ", with the following breakdown :

Desurvire (24), Giles (11), Zyskind (7), Olsson (4), Simpson (2) and Becker (2).

In terms of global authorship, combining first and co-author contributions, the numbers are :

Desurvire (38), Simpson (38), Giles (22), Zyskind (18), Becker (14) and Olsson (13).

The high number of publications for J.R.Simpson reflects the fact that he has co-authored 29 papers with myself as first author, including the very first one. I leave it to analysts to conclude from the above data as to wherever the action was happening during these important years. The second folder of the critic is about noise figure definition and development. Here again, the critic exhibits ignorance. The work from the Bell labs core team, as sketched from the above statistics, rapidly led to an optimal EDFA design, which was transferred to the submarine-cable area, for a success that is over-documented. Actually, the floppy-disk EDFA model offered in the B-O-S book is based upon the theory developped by C.R.Giles and myself. It is also extensively used in amplifier simulation software by suppliers and compagnies worlwide, as being generic and accurate. The critic gives me credit for the noise figure definition, which has since become a standard. It is brought to his kind attention that the issue, after all these years yet, is important enough to mobilize top MIT experts with possible consequences for standards in the technology. As a conclusion to help re-orienting the critic's future, I will say first that you cannot create a start-up from the integration of any book's knowledge (no matter how good, accurate and applied, no matter how many books), because this is not what is expected from start-up " entrepreneurs ". Second, actual expertise in optical communications requires sweat mind work, not sweet talking at job-interview time. Finally, short of experience and appreciation, please keep respect to the generations of enginers at Bell Labs, and elsewhere in Europe and Japan, who paved the way to the Internet technology with their combined touch and visions.---- (*) source : " H.R.D.Sunak, Bibliography on EDFAs : 19987 to 1990, EDFA consultants publisher, Kingston, RI, 1991 ", p.163.

4-0 out of 5 stars not a very rigorous approach but still useful
I found this book useful to catch up with the current issues in EDFA design. It gives a fair idea of the subject. The approach taken for optical communication link issues is not rigorous and is oversimplified. The book gives good introduction to OASIX package for EDFA design.Probably good for someone who is not interested in detailed theory of EDFA.

Desurvire remains 'The Bible' for serious EDFA scientists and Engineers alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST IN CLASS
most up-to-date, fewest mistakes (by far), clearest, most-well-thought-out-treatment

3-0 out of 5 stars Re: EDFA argument
I am interested in reviews about the book but i am perplexed by the furore as penned in the previous e-mails, having just written that however i would just like to re-iteriate the point made previously that a huge amount of in-fibre technology development and research work was done at the University of Southampton. NB I haven't used the book yet so ignore the star rating ... Read more

Book Description

Comprehensive coverage of light polarization theory and its practical applications in today's cutting-edge technologies

Besides being indispensable to modern investigations into the physical world, light polarization is a fundamental component of several revolutionary technological innovations in such diverse fields as telecommunications, pollution control, and medical diagnostics. Yet there is a conspicuous dearth of texts and professional references providing researchers and engineers with a unified, comprehensive treatment of basic light polarization theory and its applications to current microwave and optical technology. This book fills that gap in the literature.

Fundamentals of Polarized Light serves equally well as an advanced text for physics and electrical engineering students and a professional reference for practicing engineers and researchers. It combines a rational, integrated presentation of the theory behind modern applications of light polarization with several demonstrations of current applications. A key feature of the book is that the analysis of polarized light and its interaction with linear optical media is presented from a statistical point of view.

Topics covered include:
* Historical foundations of polarized light
* Classical radiation field theory and Maxwell's equations
* Statistical theory of partial polarization, including a discussion of the thermodynamics of radiation fields
* Propagation of polarized light through linear optical systems
* Polarization transfer matrix methods for describing changes in polarization states that occur during reflection and refraction
* Propagation of partially polarized waves in disordered systems and anisotropic media
* Polarizers, compensators, and other optical components
* Measurements of the Jones and Mueller polarization matrices

Book Description

One of the first coherent, tutorial graduate level text/reference books on ultrashort laser phenomena, this book presents an introduction to the phenomena and explains how it can be used to help examine problems in areas such as electromagnetism, optics, and quantum mechanics. Written for students as well as experimental researchers in physics, engineering, biology, or chemistry, the text provides the necessary background and tools to design experiments involving ultrashort pulses. All aspects of design are covered: from the construction of the source, to the amplifier, to the diagnostic method, and finally, to the design of the experiment in any field. The text reviews the basic properties of light propagation through matter and provides a study of simple optical components with emphasis on the important phenomena that occur with pulses of duration less than 10-12s (or less than 0.3 mm in length). The reader is also provided with the fundamental concepts (as well as numerical data through numerous tables), necessary to design optical systems capable of manipulating such pulses.
Beyond the simple optical system, the various types of sources of ultrashort pulses are presented, again with emphasis on the basic concepts and how they apply to the design of particular sources (dye lasers, solid state lasers, semiconductor lasers, fiber lasers, and sources based on frequency conversion). This book is addressed as much to the physicist as to the engineer, chemist, biologist, student, or experienced researcher interested in the application of ultrashort light pulses to the study of ultrafast event in this field.

Key Features
* Provides an easy to follow guide through
"faster than electronics" probing and detection
methods
* Describes the intriguing aspects of optics when
applied to ultrashort pulses
* Offers a systematic and comprehensive lecture
through all the uncommon and unexpected aspects
of short pulse propagation through linear and
nonlinear media
* Serves as a manual on designing and
constructing femtosecond systems or experiments
"from scratch"
* Presents a course that combined experimental
techniques and theoretical backgrounds, by
authors who have two decades of experience in
both theoretical and experimental aspects of
ultrafast phenomena
* Bridges the gap between an authored work and

Book Description

Principles and Applications of Quantum Control

Over the past fifteen years, significant developments have been made in utilizing quantum attributes of light and matter to assume unprecedented control over the dynamics of atomic and molecular systems. This growth reflects a confluence of factors including the maturation of quantum mechanics as a tool for chemistry and physics, the development of new laser devices increasing our ability to manipulate light, and the recognition that coherent laser light can be used to imprint information on atoms and molecules for practical purposes. Written by two of the world’s leading researchers in the field, Principles of the Quantum Control of Molecular Processes offers a systematic introduction to the fundamental principles of coherent control, and to the physics and chemistry necessary to master it.

Designed as both a resource for self-study and as a graduate textbook, this survey of the subject provides a step-by-step discussion of light-matter interactions along with coverage of such essential topics as:

  • Molecular dynamics and control
  • The dynamics of photodissociation
  • Bimolecular collision processes
  • The control of chirality and asymmetric synthesis
  • Application of control using moderate and strong fields
  • Tuning the system and laser parameters to achieve optimal control
  • Decoherence and methods for countering it

Both authoritative and comprehensive, this first in-depth treatment of coherent control is destined to become the standard reference in an increasingly influential field.

Book Description

Visual arts depend on light to communicate, and an understanding of the physical properties of light and color should enhance the communication for both the artist and the viewer.

This book is intended for students in the visual arts and for others with an interest in art but with no prior knowledge of physics. It presents the science behind what and how we see-that is, it presents the science of light. It emphasizes phenomena rather than theories and the joy of discovery rather than the drudgery of derivations-that is, the presentation is the opposite of "heavy science."

The text considers such questions as - why is the sky blue? - what is the nature of light? - how do mirrors and prisms affect the color of light? - how do compact discs store music and information? - what can visual illusions tell us about the nature of perception? and it discusses such topics as - the optics of the eye and camera - the physiology of the eye and the nature of color vision - the different kinds of sources of light - photography and holography - symmetry in art and nature - color in printing and painting - computer imaging and processing

It includes numerous problems, questions for discussion, and suggestions for simple experiments, many of which can be done at home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource for All Science Teachers
Light isn't just about electromagnetic waves - it is about human perception of those waves. This book is a wonderful resource for all teachers, and an easy and pleasurable bed-time read as well. It accurately and simply presents the pure physics of light and color and then relates it to our perception of that light and color. However, as a resource for teachers, it also provides numerous hands-on experiments suitable for students at many different levels. I'm using the polarization experiments with my high school classes at the moment. The demo using a CD as a diffraction grating is awesome, even if you don't want to explain how it works. This book is my constant companion in my effort to share "Light Science" with my students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light Science: Physics and the Visual Arts
I have used Light Science as a reference to teach an introductory optics course to middle school students. The chapters are easy to read and full of real-life examples. Each chapter concludes with quick, inexpensive experiments relating to the topic. Most experiments cost only a few dollars and use common household items. Students are excited to see the mysteries of light unfold. Lively discussions result from experiments that they can easily perform, bringing further emphasis to the topic. Light Science is in an invaluable resource for the teaching of Physical Science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explores optics, stimulates interest, sharpens brain
The book by T. Rossing and C. Chiaverina is written in a profoundly elegant manner. The authors introduce the phenomena of light and colors, reflection and refraction, interference and diffraction, polarization, light sources and spectra, holography and photography, computer images and optical storages, as well as symmetry in art and nature. It is not only a textbook of contemporary optics for a one-semester undergraduate course, but it is also helpful for industry engineers working in the optical area, college professors, and physicists. Compared to most textbooks, this book has four distinct characteristics. (1) The book emphasizes the phenomena and experiments of light rather than the mathematical theories of light. (2) It includes wide fields, from geometric optics (mirror, lens) to physical optics (slit, grating) and from quantum optics (laser, spectrum) to the symmetry, and connects them. (3) It discusses the intrinsic properties of optics and the combination of art and nature. Young students can obtain the fundamental optical concept as well as the sophisticated philosophic idea. (4) Most importantly, it stimulates the interest of the readers to explore more contents of optical phenomena and theories. My daughter, a college student, said, ¡°I learned many things, having fun at the same time¡±.

It was my pleasure to read the book and I recommend it highly. ... Read more
