Book Description

This text will thoroughly update the existing literature on atomic physics. Intended to accompany an advanced undergraduate course in atomic physics, the book will lead the students up to the latest advances and the applications to Bose-Einstein Condensation of atoms, matter-wave inter-ferometry and quantum computing with trapped ions. The elementary atomic physics covered in the early chapters should be accessible to undergraduates when they are first introduced to the subject. To complement the usual quantum mechanical treatment of atomic structure the book strongly emphasizes the experimental basis of the subject, especially in the later chapters. It includes ample tutorial material (examples, illustrations, chapter summaries, graded problem sets). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars old and new material [especially on qubits]
This book has two types of material; both well done. The first could have been written decades ago, and is the "traditional" atomic physics. Where you start with the hydrogen atom, and investigate its spectroscopy with the Schrodinger equation. Then the book takes the next logical step by going to helium and thence to heavier atoms. LS and JJ coupling and other refinements. Such material is now quite well known and you need this for a solid background.

But the book also has much more recent material. On quantum computing using qubits. These attempt to use the quantum states of small groups of atoms, to perform computations fundamentally different from current digital efforts. Enough detail is given for you to appreciate the severe experimental travails of the field, and how much more remains to be done, if qubits are ever to become useful. ... Read more

Book Description

This undergraduate textbook presents thorough coverage of the standard topics of classical optics and optical instrument design; it also offers significant details regarding the concepts of modern optics. Its survey of the mathematical tools of optics grants students insights into the physical principles of quantum mechanics. Two principal concepts occur throughout: a treatment of scattering from real scatterers (leading to Huygens’ principles, diffraction theory, the index of refraction, and related topics); and the difference between coherent and noncoherent wave phenomena. Two sets of problems appear at the end of each chapter, some featuring detailed solutions. 1969 ed. 252 figures.

Book Description

Remarkably sustained advances in the development of new lasers and their applications in spectroscopy have prompted this revised and expanded edition of the highly successful Introduction to Laser Spectroscopy, first published in 1995. In the new edition the editors have preserved the basic concept and structure, with the involvement of some new authors - all recognized experts in laser spectroscopy. Each chapter addresses a different technique, providing a review and analysis of the current status, and reporting some of the latest achievements. With the key formulas and methods detailed in many sections, this text represents a practicable handbook of its subject. It will be a valuable tool both for specialists to keep abreast of developments and for newcomers to the field needing an accessible introduction to specific methods of laser spectroscopy - and also as a resource for primary references.

The first two chapters lay out the technical details of the main laser systems now employed for spectroscopy, and then the principles and applications of absorption and fluorescence measurements. Following a description of Raman scattering, the development of pump-probe techniques is then traced. The next chapters deal more specifically with applications of laser-induced fluorescence, first addressing diagnostics for biochemical systems, and then applications to ordered systems. The use of tunable infrared lasers for the spectroscopy of transient species is discussed in the next chapter, followed by an introduction to optical nonlinearity focusing on its surface applications. The utilisation of nonlinear optics for tunable ultraviolet generation is then described and the penultimate chapter gives a description of femtosecond laser ionisation applied in mass spectrometry. The book concludes with a survey of the environmental applications of laser remote sensing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taken from ChemPhysChem; October 2003
This book not only gives an overview of the basic principles but also reports about novelties in this research area mainly due to the development of new lasers. Despite the fact that there are several other books available dealing with the same subject, this book covers, in some chapters, recent state-of-the-art techniques which can't be found that way in other monographs but have gained in importance in recent years. The book is suited for undergraduate as well as graduate students in physics or chemistry, and for scientists who are planning to become active in this research area. I beleive that this book can provide useful illustrations for instructors in these fields who have to teach the subject to graduate or PhD students. For every reader this book provides a pedagogical approach to this research field which has gained or will still gain more and more importance in the recent or upcoming years, respectively.

Book Description

Fundamentals of Optical Fibers offers students a timely, pedagogically consistent introduction to the fundamental principles of light propagation in fibers. In it, Professor John A. Buck reviews, in depth, fundamental waveguiding concepts, the influence of various fiber structures and materials on light transmission, nonlinear light propagation effects occurring in fibers, and various measurement techniques. Since the chief application of optical fibers is in communication systems, throughout the book the focus is on topics which pertain to that domain.

In the first part of the text, the author lays the groundwork for later discussions with a detailed review of the relevant electromagnetic principles and how they apply to the analysis of wave propagation. He also introduces basic field equations and delineates the fundamental principles of dielectric waveguides.

In the second part, he explores the limitations of fiber transmission, paying particular attention to the problems of loss and dispersion. He reviews fabrication procedures and alternative fiber designs as they relate to minimizing loss and dispersion. And he presents field analysis methods for single mode and multimode fibers having graded index profiles.

In the last part, Professor Buck reviews the basics of nonlinear optics and discusses the origins of nonlinear effects and the conditions under which they appear in fibers. This section also features a discussion of fiber amplifiers, along with a review of the fundamentals of light amplification by stimulated emission.

Offering a well-balanced presentation of the basics of light propagation in fibers, and including real-world examples and end-of-chapter problems, Fundamentals of Optical Fibers is an excellent text for senior- to graduate-level courses in electrical engineering or physics. It is accessible to anyone who has taken at least a one-semester course in electromagnetics at the undergraduate level.

Offering a balanced presentation of the basics of light propagation in fibers, Fundamentals of Optical Fibers is an excellent introductory text for senior- to graduate-level courses in electrical engineering or physics. A large part of this book is devoted to a study of possible design procedures for various types of lens or mirror systems, with fully worked examples of each. The reader is urged to follow the logic of these examples and be sure that he understands what is happening, noticing particularly how each available degree of freedom is used to control one aberration. Not every type of lens has been considered, of course, but the design techniques illustrated here can readily be applied to the design of other more complex systems. It is assumed that the reader has access to a small computer to help with the ray tracing, otherwise he may find the computations so time-consuming that he is liable to lose track of what he is trying to accomplish. ... Book Description

This book is an up to date, introductory treatment of geometrical optics, from the point of view of the future optics practitioner. The principles of gaussian optics and first-order layout and design are emphasized, based on the tracing of two paraxial rays and the associated optical invariant. The radiometry of lens systems is seen to rest on the same concepts. Third order aberration theory is developed in detail. Complete examples of third order design are provided, together with software tools that allow the reader to follow the examples in detail, or to develop other examples independently. Throughout the book, the understanding of fundamental principles is given preference over the mere following of recipes. Several problems at the end of each chapter allow the student to practice and extend the concepts taught. In addition to Gaussian optics and aberrations, the basic principles of several types of optical instruments and components are treated, including gradient index and diffractive optics. A complete yet simple treatment of gaussian beams is included, that is also based on two paraxial rays and the optical invariant. The book concludes with an outline of the optical design process and solved design problems. ... Read more

Book Description

This book presents the most comprehensive and methodical work on the theory of the moiré phenomenon, providing a full general-purpose and application-independent exposition of this fascinating effect. Based on the Fourier theory, it leads the reader through the various phenomena which occur in the superposition of repetitive layers, both in the image and in the spectral domains. The first chapters of the book present the basic theory, covering the superposition of monochrome, periodic layers. In later chapters the theory is extended to the even more interesting cases of polychromatic moirés and moirés between repetitive, non-periodic layers. Throughout the whole text the book favours a pictorial, intuitive approach which is supported by mathematics, and the discussion is accompanied by a large number of figures and illustrative examples, some of which are visually attractive and even spectacular.

Audience: This book is intended for students, scientists, engineers and any readers who wish to widen their knowledge of the moiré effect. It also offers a beautiful demonstration of the Fourier theory and its relationship with other fields of mathematics and science. The prerequisite mathematical background is limited to an elementary familiarity with the Fourier theory. ... Read more

This is a nicely written book which describes most of modern moire pattern theory. The emphasis is on the Fourier domain and several chapters are merely an extension of papers written by the author. Another novel topic is the use of colors in moire patterns. In the area of moire pattern, this book is clearly the best so far. It has most of the recent developments and Amidror has put many nice figures which help clarify the material. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good basic introduction
I thought this book was a good basic introduction to the field of optical properties of solids. The strong point of this book is that it is well organized and gives many examples. It starts with the basics of Maxwell's equation, then moves on to talk about luminescence, excitons, quantum wells, luminescence centers ... I enjoyed reading about the examples given. It gives many basic descriptions of how optoelectronics device work such as light emitting diodes and Ti:sapphire lasers.

This book is geared toward anybody who has taken one semester of basic quantum and one semester of electricity and magnetism. It is easy to read and contains many diagrams. Chapters end with a useful list of references that go into more details. This book is not a reference for graduate level treatment of optical properties of solids. The nonlinear optics part is short and shallow. The quantum mechanical description is basic.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anybody that is learning for the first time about optical properties of solids. Solid state physics textbooks by Ashcroft & Mermin and Kittel do not contain a useful and up-to-date section on optical properties of solids. This book fills the gap. ... Read more

Book Description

Most of the material in this volume is new. The first three chapters deal with three important fiber-optic components--fiber-based gratings, couplers, and interferometers--that serve as the building blocks of lightwave technology. In view of the enormous impact of rare-earth-doped fibers, amplifiers and lasers made by using such fibers are covered in Chapters 4 and 5. The last three chapters describe important applications of nonlinear fiber optics and are devoted to pulse-compression techniques, fiber-optic communication systems, and soliton-based transmission schemes. This volume should serve well the need of the scientific community interested in such fields as ultrafast phenomena, optical amplifiers and lasers, and optical communications. It will also be useful to graduate students as well as scientists and engineers involved in lightwave technology.

* Training resource for engineers involved with lightwave technology
* Covers the importance of nonlinear effects in designing WDM lightwave systems

Book Description

Elastic waves possess some remarkable properties and it is these that explain their important role in the processing of electronic signals and the sensing of physical quantities. For example, they can be generated by localized or distributed sources, can propagate in the core or on the surface of optically transparent or opaque solids, have velocities one hundred thousand times less than those of electromagnetic waves, and they can modify the characteristics of a light beam. The purpose of this second volume is to illustrate the functions fulfilled by the free and guided waves described in Vol. I. It deals with the generation of bulk waves using piezoelectric resonators, generation of surface waves by interdigital transducers, interaction between elastic waves and light waves, acousto-electronic filters, acousto-optic components, sensors and instruments. ...
