Book Description

On the cover of this book is a Pacific yew tree, found in the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest. The bark of the Pacific yew tree produces Taxol, found to be a highly effective drug against ovarian and breast cancer. Taxol blocks mitosis during eukaryotic cell division. The supply of Taxol from the Pacific yew tree is vanishingly small, however. A single 100-year-old tree provides only about one dose of the drug (roughly 300 mg). For this reason, as well as the spectacular molecular architecture of Taxol, synthetic organic chemists fiercely undertook efforts to synthesize it. Five total syntheses of Taxol have thus far been reported. Now, a combination of isolation of a related metabolite from European yew needles, and synthesis of Taxol from that intermediate, supply the clinical demand. This case clearly demonstrates the importance of synthesis and the use of organic chemistry. It's just one of the many examples used in the text that will spark the interest of students and get them involved in the study of organic chemistry! ... Read more

Like any other text. To pricy if you ask me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best beginners book in market!!
Sperling's book stands out as the most useful polymer science text, compiling essential elements of varied physical properties and behaviour. The third edition has up to date material on all aspects of polymer physics including chapters on polymer surfaces and interfaces as well as on multicomponent polymer systems and liquid crystalline polymers. In my opinion, as a beginners guide, the book is definitely outscores over all other texts in market including Billmeyer, Painter Coleman, Rodriquez, etc. The book also contains a good description of various polymer characterization techniques.

The material covered is adequate to provide basic information about each field in polymer physics, and the textbook has enough material to be useful for two or three courses. The author presents a lot of tables in the book, that succintly summarize important points related to that topic. Coupled with Strobl's book, which has slightly advanced description of polymer physics, and Doi's Introduction to polymer physics, which has mathematically intensive description of statistical mechanics of polymers, you have three texts to teach you essentially everything there is to know in Polymer Physics!! (Perhaps you can add a text for Polymer Rheology, say by Larson!) ... Read more

Book Description

The second edition includes: 16 additional name reactions; the references are updated and expanded; a better index; short descriptions for most of the name reactions are added; typographical and structural errors are corrected.

Different from other books on name reactions in organic chemistry, Name Reactions, A Collection of Detailed Reaction Mechanisms focuses on their mechanisms. It covers over 300 classical as well as contemporary name reactions. Each reaction is delineated by its detailed step-by-step, electron-pushing mechanism, supplemented with the original and the latest references, especially review articles. Thus, it is not only an indispensable resource for senior undergraduate and graduate students for their learning and exams, but also a good reference book for all chemists interested in name reactions.

SOME PRAISE FOR THE PREVIOUS EDITION:

JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL EDUCATION "This is an excellent book for arrow pushing and learning organic name reactions as encountered in graduate school . . . Li's book contains reactions of all mechanistic classes . . . The book is nicely balanced, containing modern-day reactions for assembly of stereocomplex molecules. Reactions such as the Corey-Bakshi-Shibata reduction are analyzed. This book is a good reference text that fills a void that has existed for some time. It is both an excellent tool for learning and a good reference source." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A excellent collection of important Name Reactions
This book is a must for any undergrad, graduate student or for that matter, CHEMIST, at any level who is interested in Name Reactions. It contains 331 name reactions that range from classic organic chemistry to modern day organic chemistry. An excellent collection of important name reactions that is in an easy to read format. Each reaction contains a brief summary, a general reaction scheme and a detailed arrow pushing mechanism.

I really like this book because of its contents and simplicity. Its very easy to find the reaction you are looking for and the information is complete. It would be very helpful in studying for advance organic chemistry exams or as a quick reference when you do not know a particular named reaction. The index is about average for this type of book; however, this book is based on the fact that you are looking up named reactions and not using it as a functional group conversion reference.

After all is said and done, I can truly say that I am glad I purchased this book. It is a complete summary of named reactions and I look forward to using it in the years to come.

Book Description

Macromolecules are the proteins and nucleic acids upon which life depends. Understanding the action of biological macromolecules (giant molecules) requires detailed knowledge of their structures. Most of the more than ten thousand known structures of protein and nucleic acids were obtained by x-ray crystallography, the standard mechanism for determining protein structure. Essentially, proteins are frozen into rigid crystals, which can be stacked up in a repeating pattern--like supermarket displays. The structure of each individual crystal can be determined by the way x-rays are bent when they pass through the composite crystal. Protein structure is essential when investigating protein interactions and planning drug development.
Crystallography Made Crystal Clear, Second Edition explains how scientists discover the structures of the macromolecules. Scientists do not see these molecules directly. Instead, they build models as a means of interpreting data from x-ray diffraction by crystals, or by irradiation by other forms of energy. Users of these models need to know how they are obtained in order to know what they are seeing when they study a model of a macromolecule. They also need to know how to judge whether conclusions they draw from the molecular models are really supported by the models. This book uses visual and geometric models to help readers understand the mathematics that forms the basis of x-ray crystallography.
The field of protein crystallography is growing every day and has been instrumental in discovering the molecular principles of biology and in discovering new drugs, such as the recent protease inhibitors for AIDS. The field includes the largest percentage of Nobel prizes than any other scientific discipline. Every major university and drug company has a protein crystallography laboratory and this book is an invaluable aid to those wishing to practice protein crystallography
or just learn more about how it is actually done.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to the subject
This is the best introduction to crystallography I have ever come across. Which is quite an achievement, because its a difficult subject to understand. In crystallography, its very rare to find a book which does not deal with either a totally descriptive approach or a totally mathematical approach. Rhodes' book bridges the gap between the two and gives the reader the right dose of jargon and explanation. He illustrates every point with plenty of figures as well as real life computer models of proteins. Before I came across this book, I was struggling and failing to understand Isomorphous Replacement, MAD, Solvent Flattening, Maps and Models, as well as the iterative refining of models. I think no other book comes even close to this book in explaining all these concepts in simple format. This, I think is as clear as it can get without becoming oversimplified. A must have for all researchers and students whose work is even remotely connected to crystallography.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The" clearest one out there....
When it comes to this field of research, you get two types of references: (1) the 2-5 page quick intro that leaves you with the most basic overview of crystallography and (2) the 'hard core' books that go into such detail as to leave you breathless. This book is, in my opinion, the best transition book.

For non-crystallographers, this book will teach enough about crystallography to allow you to read crystal structure articles and understand what is meant by all of the used statistics and such.

For apprentice crystallographers, this is a wonderful intro into the field. Master the book, then move on to harder books to master it.

Highly recommended. I still go back to it, when I teach people, to help me explain in the way that Gale Rhodes does!

4-0 out of 5 stars Updated for the e-century
The second edition of Crystallography Made Crystal Clear contains many improvements over the first edition, especially regarding the introduction of new graphics technology available to everyone that can view this webpage on the internet. Rhodes especially explains how the PDB file works and how to view it to best suit the individual scientist's purpose.

It is important to note that the book is still far from "crystal clear"! The portion of the book dealing with the physics of x-ray diffraction is very mysterious--definately dig out the old college physics textbook and read about diffraction when you find yourself confused. Also, the mathematics presented in the middle chapters of the book are way beyond the level that biochemists must deal with on a regular basis. An understanding of multi-variable calculus is important for these chapters.

Overall, the book is a must-read for anyone interested in structural biology, with the exception of several chapters regarding the mathematics that can be skimmed over. And the webpage associated with the book is an excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in protein structure.
A readable overview, superb for getting a feel for how crystallography works and what the results mean. There is also an excellent section on judging the quality of an atomic coordinate file, such as a PDB file you may download. Prof. Rhodes is now completing a second edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
The perfect bridge between simple introductions and more complete books, both difficult to understand for the non-crystallographer. Very clear explanations -crystal clear- and real examples from real papers. Just what I wanted to know. No more no less. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Agreed - a must have for the practicing organic chemist
I agree that the bad reviews are probably predominantly from non-chemists. Larock's first edition has become an absolute standard reference on the desk of the practicing organic chemist, who is after lead references and an idea of how a given transformation has been done. I have seen his 2nd edition and it is much the same, only updated and expanded. The price is high, but typical for the field and quite justified. I am waiting til I can buy it with faculty startup funds, but in 6 months it will be on my desk!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the non-chemists reviewing this book.
I want to help others sort through the conflicting reviews of this book. As a PhD chemist, I can say unequivocally that this book is not for the non-professional, as I suspect the negative reviewers are. The indexing system is not intuitive, but makes sense once you've begun to use it. One of the reviewers complains that database searching is better than this book. This book is intended to help you find straightforward procedures for relatively straightforward reactions and allows you to look at the many things that have been tried to effect a given transformation. These are things that the databases can't help much with since these reactions have been done in the literature thousands of times, and any search will generate a huge mess of matches.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hoping Big but Disappointing
The title "Comprehensive Orgainc Transformations" strikes me with much hope that all representative functional groups tranfer and reactions will be fully explained and included in one volume for easy reference. Well, not so quick.

Cited references from this volume might be the only (+) that I will credit to the piece. The organization of the book is extremely perplexing and weird. It is not very easy to find a reaction that I desire. In fact, the details for transformation are disappointingly little. If you plan to get this book with the same expectation, you should turn to Jerry March's Advanced Organic Chemistry or the Beilstein Cross-Fire Organic Reaction and Compounds software. Any advanced texts on organic synthesis will give you more details.

Oh, by the way, the price () is just stunningly high and ridiculous.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the organic chemist
This book provides an excellent starting point for a literature search on a particular reaction. Unlike an electronic database, the references provided are generally just the most useful ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not excellent, but very good
This is a very good book for looking up references on a great variety of transformations. This book is probably not as good a March's book, but complements it very well. Between these two books, you can probably find any reference you want. ... Read more

Book Description

This book is a must for every synthetic chemist. With didactic skill and clarity, K. C. Nicolaou and E. Sorensen present the most remarkable and ingenious total syntheses from outstanding synthetic organic chemists.

To make the complex strategies more accessible, especially to the novice, each total synthesis is analyzed retrosynthetically. The authors then carefully explain each synthetic step and give hints on alternative methods and potential pitfalls. Numerous references to useful reviews and the original literature make this book an indispensable source of further information.

Special emphasis is placed on the skillful use of graphics and schemes: Retrosynthetic analyses, reaction sequences, and stereochemically crucial steps are presented in boxed sections within the text. For easy reference, key intermediates are also shown in the margins.

Graduate students and researchers alike will find this book a gold mine of useful information essential for their daily work. Every synthetic organic chemist will want to have a copy on his or her desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classics in Total Synthesis Revisited
The more I read and study out from the book, the more I appreciate the beauty of it. Nicolaou and Sorensen's Classics in Total Synthesis is the most widely consulted title on organic synthesis. As many have commented, this book is a must for every synthetic organic chemist, organic student and researcher.

Released in 1995, despite the advances in synthetic methodology, Nicolaou has presented some of the most remarkable and ingenious total syntheses from laboratories of the world's most prominent organic chemists. Molecules adopted include strychnine, prostaglandin, progesterone, vitamin B12, erythronolide B, monensin, endiandric acids, biotin, hirsutene, capnellene, methyl homosecodaphniphyllate, calicheamicin and more.

Nicaolaou has done an incredible favor to make the strategies more understandable and accesible. For each molecule, the total synthesis begins with a thorough retrosynthetic analysis. Sometimes more than one retrosynthetic routes are introduced in order to show the possibilities of finding the most efficient synthesis.

Nicoloau then meticulously describle each step in synthesis with referral to important named reactions such as the Noyori assymmetric reduction, Luche reaction, Johnson Claisen rearrangement, Julia olefination, etc. With such didatic skill and clarity, Nicoloau has taught the gist of synthesizing complex molecules from commercially available building blocks. A great way to use the book and learn organic synthesis would be to write down every single step on a separate piece of paper and understand what each step does in the overall total synthesis. The synthesis steps and important reactions are presented in schemes with blue background sections, with emphasis on asymmetric synthesis, catalysts, stereochemistry and mechanism. Major reaction intermediates are presented at the margin.

Chemical synthesis relies heavily on chemical literature research. Nicoloau also provides numerous references in each total synthesis for further studies and consultation. Nicoloau has made organic synthesis fun and approachable. Every synthetic chemist should own a copy of Nicolaou.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Could Be The Only Synthesis Book You Need...
A graduate student strongly recommended me to get this book and start reading. At first intimidated by the complex synthesis steps and unfamiliar reagents, the Nicolaou synthesis book is a must read for organic students and chemists. Unlike "The Logic of Chemical Synthesis" (no doubt is also well-written), Nicolaou's "Classics in Total Synthesis" is a pictorial account of some of the representative syntheses of natural products. The detailed, well-written text discusses total synthesis work of chemists such as Heathcock, Corey, Evans, and Nicolaou himself. Each synthesis is preceded with the historical background and significance. A detailed synthetic scheme is included with detailed discussion of each intemediate and inidvidual step. Reader will surely learn a great deal by working through each synthetic step with a pencil and paper. While most advanced organic texts discuss the typical traditional methods in synthetic chemistry, Nicolaou discusses practical approach to synthesizing complex stereospecific compounds. Corey's "The Logic of Chemical Syntheses" might have the similar scope in organic synthesis, yet Nicolaou will be more reader-friendly especially for beginning students in organic synthesis. Nicolaou presents not only the tactics of the subject, it also brings out the beauty of the art of total synthesis. A good read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy
If you are wondering whether or not you should buy this book - you should! Why? You will not find a better, more in-depth, fun-to-look-at, or interesting book about total syntheses than this one by K.C. Nicolaou at Scripps. I promise that you will really enjoy this book, especially if you are a graduate student in organic chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for synthetic organic chemists
This is an impressive collection of 36 syntheses. Each chapter describes a different synthesis. Included are a retrosynthetic analysis(very helpful for those learning the art of total synthesis), the total synthesis(explaining key steps along the way and why the reaction gave the products it did) and then some conclusions. The appendix in chapter 22, on Catalytic Asymetric Reactions is very useful. If you bought "The Logic of Chemical Synthesis' and were dissapointed, don't let that scare you from this book. It is well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must for organic synthetic chemists!
If you want to do (total) synthesis yourself it is an absolute must to read this book. Not the book itself, but the synthesis described are brilliant. Even if some of them are 'old' it is great to see the progress synthetic chemistry made within the last 20-30 years. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent book and it lies on the smaller physical side of organic chemistry, as the title says, instead of the huge biochemical side. It really was a fascinating book.
