5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to polymer chem...
I was not able to fit polymer chem into my schedule at University, so I bought this book after graduating. This book is extremely organized and provides a lot of examples. The first of three sections provides a great introduction with the focus on definitions and structure. This is accomplished with very little reference to reactions.
The next two sections, which are titled vinyl and nonvinyl polymers respectively, address reaction mechanisms and kinetics. This layout allowed for smooth transitions between sections and concepts were introduced and reinforced smoothly.
The other thing I liked about it, is the continuous reinforcement of nomenclature...every time a name was used a corresponding structure was on that same page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Premier Polymer Chemistry Text
This textbook does an excellent job of going over the basics of polmer chemistry. There are insightful questions at the end of chapters that make students think and the book goes over the material in such a way that a background in organic chemistry is not necessary. If you need to learn about polymer chemistry on your own, this book is an excellent purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Polymer Chemistry-An Excellent Introduction
"Polymer Chemistry: An Introduction" is an excellent text for an upper division undergraduate or graduate level course in polymer chemistry. The book is also enjoyable to read for scientists and engineers in the polymer and materials fields. The content is logically organized, there is fairly in-depth discussion of mechanisms of polymerization reactions and of the origins of stereoregularity in polymers, and the problems at the end of each chapter are more than adequate for reviewing the subject matter. Professor Stevens clearly introduces the reader to the subject of polymer chemistry, relating the physical properties of macromolecular materials to polymer orientation, microstructure, stereochemistry and chemical composition. He also provides an enormous amount of information on the history of polymers in a fashion that effectively reinforces the important concepts being described. I find myself referring to this text far more frequently than the other polymer texts on my bookshelves. ... Read more

Book Description

Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. The discussion is organized by types of mechanisms and the conditions under which the reaction is executed, rather than by the overall reaction as is the case in most textbooks. The treatment emphasizes unifying principles, showing how common mechanisms link seemingly disparate reactions. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. Each chapter is capped by a large problem set. The author has drawn on his own research and the current literature to ensure that appropriate attention is given to topics across the range of modern organic chemistry. The text is unique in its inclusion of a chapter on reactions mediated or catalyzed by transition metals, an area in which mechanistic understanding is now essential. Relatively new topics such as olefin metathesis and cycloaromatization are covered without giving short shrift to more traditional areas such as carbonyl chemistry. The text assumes a basic knowledge of organic chemistry. It can be used either in a formal course or by students working on their own, and will be particularly useful for graduate students studying for qualifying examinations. It will also be useful to students and researchers in biochemistry, pharmacology, and inorganic chemistry.

FROM THE REVIEWS:

"... Grossman's book differs from others in the scale of the worked examples. The number of problems incorporated into the text is extraordinary. The author provides the student a Web site that includes the detailed mechanisms for every problem in the book, each of which includes explanation and commentary, and the answer set, when printed, exceeds 250 pages! . . . In style, The Art of... is unique in that it does not read like a typical textbook. Instead, the feel is like that of having a personal tutor next to you walking you through the chemistry in a step-by-step fashion. The writing is clear, concise, engaging, and, at times, outright entertaining. The lively style includes "Common Error Alerts" that teach students what not to do and includes tips and advice on how to solve problems . . . The highest compliment a reviewer can give is to adopt the text that he reviews. The next advanced course I teach will use The Art of Writing Reasonable Reaction Mechanisms with the goal that students will be able to posit a plausible mechanism for any new reaction that they encounter. To those of you who have taught traditional physical organic chemistry out of the classic texts, I ask you to consider trying something, well... completely different. The Art of Writing Reasonable Reaction Mechanisms might just change the way you do things." - R.W. Holman, Journal of Chemical Education

SOME PRAISE FOR THE PREVIOUS EDITION:

This is an excellent and well-presented work.... The author ... has succeeded well in treating the central ideas of reactivity and selectivity in an integrated whole. The clear style of writing, the well chosen examples, and the ... concise summaries of the main points provided at the end of each chapter should enable the reader to easily consolidate what has been learned.... The book is indeed a little work of art. - Jens Hartung, Angewandte Chemie International Edition

I have taught a one-credit course with this book for three years, and, uniformly, the students have rated this book highly for its clarity and for the scope of the problems. ... This book does an excellent job at its stated goal: "to teach students to come up with reasonable mechanisms for reactions they have never seen before." - Amy Howell, Synthesis

I have just finished my first year of graduate studies in organic chemistry at Duke University. I just wanted to let you know how much your book got me through the past year of course work.... When it came to mechanisms, I found the clarity and thoroughness I needed only in your book. It was impressive how you were able to present so much information in a clear and comprehensive manner yet keep the book so manageable in size. In addition to the text, I also was able to benefit from the problems.... Great practice!! The on-line answers are much better than looking up answers by reference.... I am reading it again this summer in preparation for my preliminary exam next spring. - David Gooden ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will help you get your PhD
Grossman?s text was invaluable in helping me prepare for cumulative exams towards my PhD. I highly recommend this book as one of the best organic mechanism reviews I have come across. The problems are well thought-out, and often copied by other professors for use on cumulative exams (imitation is the highest form of flattery). Solutions are available online from the publisher, which is very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn, not just memorize!
The reason this book is good is because it will help you actually learn how to do organic chemistry instead of just memorizing reactions and their mechanisms. This book answers "WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?". A very important book for the graduate student in organic chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
This book is not the first of its kind. Audrey Miller wrote the first one-"Writing Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry". Miller used a renovating approch to treat organic reaction mechanisms. Mechanisms are not a bunch of random knowledges to be memorized any more. They can be analyzed and mastered.

However Grossman did a terrific job writing this book. It covers more material than Miller's. Both books are easy to read. Keys to answers of this book can be downloaded from internet(over 200 pages).

This book is great for graduate student who's struggling on his/her cumes, for industrial organic chemist who wants to have a thorough review of organic mechanism. Great value for the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for 1st year grad students
This book was extremely helpful in studying for my PhD qualifier. I would suggest it to any first year (or later) grad student. One warning, though: this book has NO references!! I hope you never want to do any of these reactions in the lab... The lack of refs is the only thing keeping it to four stars instead of five.

5-0 out of 5 stars An A+ Guide to Organic Mechanism
Organic chemistry is rapidly-expanding field. New reactions pop out every day in research. How do you manage to secure the skills in writing and understanding these organic mechanisms? Many students try very heard to memorize reaction patterns yet unfortunately not able to master the concepts in mechanisms.

This book is meant to fill this gap. It introduces to ligoic behind the organic reaction mechanisms. By looking at nucleophilic or electrophilic species, kinetic suggestions, lone pairs, possible synthons and leaving groups, disconnection approach, students are exposed in a wide-range of reactions. The goal of the book is to enable students to write correct and logical mechanisms for reactions that are not seen before.

This book should accompany any undergraduate organic text and/or serves alone as a text for advanced course. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of problems will be solved in later revisions
The index for this book .... For example, there are a fair number of examples of the epoxidation reaction, but not a single pointer toward that in the index of the book. And much the same thing for other types of reactions.

It would also be nice if there was a more clear transfer between basic organic principles and then biological applications.

He does do a good job showing this is some cases (i.e., the benzoin condensation), but a few more parallel examples would have been very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professor Silverman does it again!
This book is an excellent resource for undergraduate and graduate students studying enzyme chemistry and organic mechanisms. Prof. Silverman does a fine job of giving many different examples of enzyme mechanisms. By not focusing totally on one kind of enzyme or catalysis, he succeeds in painting a broad picture for the reader, while not sacrificing content. The only drawback to this edition is the large amount of typographical errors that appear throughout. Perhaps better editing is in order for future editions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good student text

Ifound it great to read before doing the scheduled experiments in O-Chemlab. However, this is a very "student"-ish text and I seriouslydoubt professionals would find it useful, unless you're looking for arefresher course in the basic techniques. 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for polymer chemistry!
Odian offers a comprehensive guide to polymer chemistry, covering nearly all the types of polymerization, exploring radical, ionic, step, and copolymerization mechanisms and kinetics in sufficient detail. Some recent advances in polymer synthesis are not covered, but book offers enough knowledge to have a good grasp of all aspects of polymerizations. A must read for anyone considering a career or education in polymer synthesis!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great text book!
I took a course last year in Polymer Chemistry and this text was the standard text book. It was an amazingly great reference book. This book mainly target on Polymerization synthesis and characterization. If you are interested in the mechanical properties of polymer, you should look for other one. But this is a must for all polymer chemists and material scientists who are interested in polymer processing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A handy reference
I have been using this book for several years, including a term where it was the primary text for a graduate-level Introduction to Polymers course. As textbooks go, I have found this one relatively easy to read, and the concepts easy to follow. It it quite comprehensive, but assumes an undergraduate background in organic and physical chemistry. Since the course, it has been a handy reference in my research, though, as someone else noted, it is lacking in respect to living polymerizations, particularly Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization. However, Odian's work remains one of the most useful textbooks from my graduate classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars The standard text for teaching polymer chemistry.
The number of concepts covered in this book is amazing -- I learn something new with each reading. The book is also great for pointing you to the leading references in the field; although it is lacking decent coverage of living polymerization. Odian's book is not easy to read. For a chemistry book it includes relatively few chemical structures or mechanisms, so for students who don't already know chemistry it is a rather useless introduction A better introductory polymer chemistry book is by M. Stevens.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive, despite recent reviews to the contrary.
Encyclopedic and comprehensive, this text ought to be the sole reference work for undergrads and graduates in the field of polymer science. ... Read more

Book Description

Edited by two of the experts in the field, the central aim is to show organic chemists working in process development that enantioselective catalysis is suitable for the large-scale production of enantioenriched intermediates. In so doing, it is equally a source of information and inspiration for academic research, and, with its contribution by Noble prizewinner W. S. Knowles, will also heighten the status of industrial catalyst specialists working in the exciting field of enantioselective catalysis.
Some 25 contributions from top industrial researchers around the world present case studies on the development of the widest possible range of large-scale enantioselective processes, featuring stereoselective production processes of fine-chemicals, agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. Clearly structured according to the nature of the task, this handbook adopts a problem-driven approach such that readers can easily find how colleagues have dealt with a similar situation.
