Book Description

Concise and manageable, Fessenden and Fessenden's text has earned a reputation as a superb teaching text. One of the only books that students can get through cover to cover in two semesters, it is written in an economical style that stays focused on the main discussion. The authors anticipate student questions and answer them in the same chapter.

Described by users as " the masters of the short sentence." Fessenden and Fessenden are renowned for their clear, to-the-point coverage and masterful selection of topics. The book provides a clear organization of functional groups according to sigma-bonding and pi-bonding to give students a conceptually efficient context that helps them understand the overall content of organic chemistry. Core topics for the course appear in Chapters 1-18 with more advanced and biochemical topics covered in 19-26. Essential information in each chapter is covered in earlier sections, leaving optional material for later sections. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I have the old addition and its no improvement
I have had this text for an intro to organic class this last semester, and using the old version for the class was easy since it hasnt changed in the new revsion. I hate to say it but it is well written except for thestructure of the molecules since they are all in letter format, why couldntthey revise the new edition with line angle drawings the ink cost is thesame.... it makes it that much harder to read with the current typewriterstyle samples

5-0 out of 5 stars Great treatment of a difficult topic!
This is a fine text. The authors have broken down a rather difficultsubject into easily digestable units, which helped my understanding of thewhole. You should also use the companion CD. This is a great tool forvisualizing the 3-D structure of complex molecules.I bought this book andhave refered to it many times. Do yourself a favor and buy this greattext!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful I ever used
I think if you're chemistry major while you're taking organic chemistry, you should buy this text, because it helps you steps by steps. Of course, whoever disagrees my opinion, I've no control to know which organic text(s) is the best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Use This Book!
There are much, much better texts out there to learn Organic Chemistry. It is a shame that some prof's still use this grossly out-dated and non-mainstream text. ... Read more

Book Description

'The Organic Chemistry of Museum Objects' makes available in a single volume, a survey of the chemical composition, properties and analysis of the whole range of organic materials incorporated into objects and artworks found in museum collections.

The authors cover the fundamental chemistry of the bulk materials such as wood, paper, natural fibres and skin products, as well as that of the relatively minor components incorporated as paint, media, varnishes, adhesives and dyes. This expanded second edition, now in paperback, follows the structure of the first, though it has been extensively updated. In addition to chapters on basic organic chemistry, analytical methods, analytical findings and fundamental aspects of deterioration, the subject matter is grouped as far as possible by broad chemical class - oils and fats, waxes, bitumens, carbohydrates, proteins, natural resins, dyestuffs and synthetic polymers.

This is an essential purchase for all practising and student conservators, restorers, museum scientists, curators and organic chemists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-Melt Processable Fluoroplastics
This is a very thorough publication dealing with fluoroplastics that are being processed by methods other than shaping the melt. The book has a good flow and describes very thoroughly fundamentals, properties and structure, monomers, their synthesis and properties, polymerization methods, processing and fabrication methods. Additional chapters discuss properties, applications, safety, disposal and recycling of this type of commercial fluoropolymers. At the end of the book, there are additional very useful data on polytetrafluoroethylene and polychlorotrifluoroethylene in the form of appendices as well as a large glossary. With the wealth of valuable information and data this book is one of a kind and a valuable resource for anyone seeking information on the subject.

Book Description

A practical introduction to one of today's most exciting and rapidly growing areas of polymer science.

Introduction to Ionomers affords chemists, engineers, and graduate students an opportunity to familiarize themselves quickly and thoroughly with one of today's most commercially important classes of polymers. Featuring a balanced, fully integrated presentation of basic science and state-of-the-art applications, the book provides the depth of knowledge researchers need to make optimal use of established ionomeric processes or to develop new systems of their own.

The book's primary conceptual thrust is the relationship between polymeric architecture and polymeric morphology and properties when affected by ionic groups. While it provides in-depth coverage of all common classes of ionomeric materials--including polystyrenes, polyethylenes, polyurethanes, and polyacrylics--non-crystalline materials are emphasized over partly-crystalline materials. Co-author Adi Eisenberg, a leading ionomer pioneer and innovator, provides a uniquely intimate historical perspective on the field as it has developed over the past three decades.

Newcomers to ionomers will appreciate the authors' clear and methodical presentations of difficult concepts, designed to promote rapid mastery of the core principles involved. The product of an exhaustive survey of the huge and rapidly growing world literature on the subject, Introduction to Ionomers is also an excellent resource for experienced professionals attempting to stay abreast of important recent developments in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Prep for organic
This book is not a substitution for organic chemistry by any means. It's mean (the first 2 chapters) to prepare, review, and reinforce concepts learned in Gen Chem but vital to organic.

The last 3 chapters are not review. They require some understanding of organic first. They are meant to reinforce and review what you learn in class.

So you can't just jump for chapter 1 and 2 directly into 3. One and two are meant for prior to organic. And 3 through 5 are to be used during the class.

It's definately got me several steps up on my classmates so far.

Ken

3-0 out of 5 stars Great! But . . . . .
This book starts out great, because it really makes it clear for us idiots the reason electrons are pushed. It is an engaging study tool that makes you want to open the book everyday. The problem with the book, I'm now learning, is that I now know how to push electrons, but I still don't know when to apply what rules. I thought that the book would have talked more about how to identify electrophiles, and nucleophiles (with regards to reagents). Instead the books jumps for being really easy to follow, to asking the reader to attempt really complex mechanisms. That's like asking a kid who just learned his ABC's to write a book. Very poor ending.

However, for those of you who are clear on electrophiles and nucleophiles, this book would be perfect for you. I suspect that if you know those well, you might not need this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for students of Organic Chemistry
Having had Dr. Weeks as a professor in my college days, I could not reisist purchasing and reading this book. As an educator, Dr. Weeks was gifted in his ability to take difficult course material and convert it into material that was not only understandable, but enjoyable. He has accomplished this again with the third edition of his book. The mastery of electron movement in organic reactions makes the understanding of more complex aspects of organic chemistry more easily achieved. No organic chemistry student should be without this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amusing organic chemistry:
This book refrains on the theory and encourage the practice of pushing electron. It's extremely easy to follow and a great practice guide to read before a first organic chemistry course. Help the student master a technique essential to the understanding of Organic Chemistry mechanism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Students Should Read This Before Organic Course
Adoption of hard cover for this book indicates that it has been more widely used as a supplimentary text for organic courses. Indeed just as the title suggests, this serves as a guide to "push electrons", the main principle behind writing reasonable mechanisms for organic reactions. Many students, unfortunately, find writing mechanisms extremely difficult and have no clue of how to begin. This book does not present chemistry of major functional groups, rather focuses on discussing how electrons shall move properly. Students who consider taking organic chemistry should at least read through this book, as a prerequisite check for your knowledge of electron structures and feel comfortable about directions of which electrons move. Excellent tool for organic student except that now students have to pay a higher price for the hard-cover version. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Planet Orgo...
I am giving this book 3 stars because I did not receive much help from it. A lot of the information that was covered in this book did not go into enough detail, like an entire subject was explained in two sentences. I needed a little more explanation, but I guess this is why the book is deemed an outline.

I was able to gather some (a very small amount) useful information from it. But, pick the book up anyway, because to master Orgo you need as many resources as possible, especially at 3 in the morning and you are trying to figure out where to place an ethyl group. In addition to this book, grab an elementary type orgo book, like orgo for beginners or orgo for nursing majors. These type of books explain things with great detail using an ABC approach. Then do as many problems as you can! Buy a ring of notecards and write part of the reaction on the front and the rest on the back. Study these cards every night religiously. You should be able to make sense out of the reactions and pass the class with a good grade with a considerable amount of study. (I received an A using the above method)

4-0 out of 5 stars Practice Makes Perfect
Schaum's outlines are perfect for what they propose to do -- give the student as much practice as possible. They are experience tools, not teaching tools. The secret to doing well in genchem/orgchem is to practice, practice practice. The more problems you do, the better you will become. Concepts and theories are only half the game in chemistry.

3-0 out of 5 stars So you want to do better at Organic?
What you should remember about the Schaum's series is that all of them, though they may call themselves "outlines," are in fact rather cheap textbooks. They include many more solved problems than your standard textbook, but they are also not as slick or nice to look at.

The organic chemistry outline can be helpful to you, perhaps. The main draw is that each chapter includes a summary of reactions that might be worth it... if, that is, you already know which reactions are more useful than others. The amount of information is great, and this may make it difficult for you to sort out which ones are worth your attention.

The Schaum's outlines are, in my opinion, great for those motivated students who would like to gain some knowledge of the subject. They can also help when you are stuck with a problem, as chances are you will find a solved problem in the book that is at least similar. Whether that is worth the cost is another question.

1-0 out of 5 stars it is not helpful
Very few of the Schaum's outline series are helpful. This one is no exception. It does nothing to clarify the confusing concepts. All it does is provide more problems. Anyone taking organic chemistry knows that it is hard enough to have time to do all the problems in the assigned textbook let alone do more from this book. Furthermore, the answers to the questions are poorly explained. Save your time and money and check out your school library for other helpful books instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing, clear & concise explanations
I purchased this book several weeks into the first semester of my organic class after being discouraged by the textbook my course used. KAPLAN ORGANIC EDGE was a pleasure to read and learn from because the author of ORGANIC EDGE (Glenn Croston, Ph.D.) is a very good writer. If more textbooks were as well written as ORGANIC EDGE, I think students would experience much less difficulty in learning hard subjects like o-chem.
Dr. Croston strikes a good balance between the conversational tone and formal content of his writing. Occasionally the informal writing sounds silly ("...if there is a carbon in the house" made me laugh out loud when I read it), but does not distract from the subject matter. Unlike authors of many other review books, Dr. Croston does not "speak down" to the reader or simplify concepts to keep the light tone of the writing intact. Instead, he uses his skills as a writer to keep the tone light when the subject matter is very, very difficult.
The organization of this book is excellent. It made it much easier for me to understand how basic concepts built upon each other and why different reaction types were important.
The "conversations" between professor and student printed in the text are helpful, but seem to still need some refinement before they will be as helpful as they can be.
This book focuses on detailed explanations of concepts rather than throwing hundreds of practice problems at the reader. I would suggest purchasing a book such as the Schuam's in addition to Dr. Croston's excellent ORGANIC EDGE.
To recap: Excellent choice to supplement (or even replace) a dry, wordy textbook. Buy this and Schuam's Outline of Organic Chemistry and you will have all the resources necessary to do well in organic chemistry. ... Read more
