Book Description

This best-selling standard, now in its fourth, completely revised English edition, is an excellent source of technological and economic information on the most important precursors and intermediates used in the chemical industry. Its translation into eight languages and the five German and four English editions are clear evidence of the popularity of this book.

'... it is where I look first to get a quick overview of the manufacturing process of a product... Weissermel/Arpe has been serving me for years as an indispensable reference work.' (Berichte der Bunsengesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie)
'It would be unkind and misleading to call this book a poor man's Kirk Othmer, but it could almost be described as an encyclopedia... it is easy to read and one has to admire the authors' dedication and endeavor in getting so much into a single volume. They have provided a book that is interesting reading as well as being an excellent reference. It is a highly recommended book, which I hope the authors will find the energy to continue updating on a regular basis.' (Chemistry in Britain)
'...it should be ready to hand to every chemist or process engineer involved directly or indirectly with industrial organic chemistry. It should be in the hand of every higher-graduate student, especially if chemical technology is not part of the study, like in many college universities...' (Tenside-Surfactants-Detergents)

Book Description

Dipolar cycloaddition chemistry has found many useful synthetic applications, particularly with respect to the preparation of compounds with new chiral centers. This approach toward asymmetric syntheses is of major importance in both the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Synthetic Applications of 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Chemistry Toward Heterocycles and Natural Products provides a comprehensive, current reference for the synthesis of complex molecules based on cycloaddition reactions. Updating Albert Padwa’s popular 1984 volume, this new edition shifts the text’s focus from theory, structure, reactivities, and selectivities to synthetic applications. Both carbonyl ylides and nitronates, important members of the 1,3-dipole family that were not reviewed previously, are now included.

Beyond the ability of the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction to produce heterocycles, its importance extends to two other areas of organic synthesis, both of which are included in the current volume. First, the heteroatom-containing cycloadducts may be transformed into a variety of other functionalized organic molecules, whether cyclic or acyclic. Second, many 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions have the ability to generate rings (and the functionality derived from transformations of such rings) containing several contiguous stereocenters in one synthetic operation. The authors deal with relative stereocontrol in 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions in detail. Asymmetric versions of these dipolar cycloadditions represent an entirely new aspect of this new edition.

Book Description

Now in its second edition, this widely used text provides a unique presentation of today's polymer science. It is both comprehensive and readable. The authors are leading educators in this field with extensive background in industrial and academic polymer research.The text starts with a description of the types of microstructures found in polymer materials. This forms the basis of understanding some of the key features of the various mechanisms of homopolymerization and copolymerization that are discussed in following chapters. Also discussed in these chapters are the kinetics and statistics of polymerization with a separate chapter on the characterization of chain structure by spectroscopic methods.The next part of the text deals with chain conformation, structure and morphology, leading to a discussion of crystallization, melting and glass transition. The discussion then moves from solid state to solution properties where solution thermodynamics is introduced. This provides the basis for discussion of the measurement of molecular weight by various solution methods.The final chapter deals with mechanical and rheological properties, which are discussed from a phenomenological continuum approach and then in terms of a fundamental molecular perspective.Altogether, the text provides a comprehensive, lucid introduction to today's polymer science as a foundation to the R&D of polymeric materials. More than 200 schematics and other figures illustrate key concepts and important aspects of polymeric materials. The text will be useful as an update for polymer and other materials scientists in industry, and as an introduction to engineers working with polymeric materials who would benefit from a better understanding of polymer science basics. ... Book Description

This book provides a systematic introduction to the field of enzyme-catalyzed reactions. The content develops from monosubstrate to bisubstrate to trisubstrate reactions, concluding with nonhyperbolic rate equations and allosteric and cooperative effects. Because it outlines the subject in such a way that it builds from less complicated to more demanding kinetic models, it can be used as a textbook for students of biochemistry and molecular biology. The author stresses the importance of graphical representation of kinetic models by frequent use of such mathematical models in the form of double-reciprocal plots. In addition, special attention is paid to isotope exchange studies, kinetic isotope effects, and the statistical evaluation of initial rate and ligand binding data. ... Read more

As scientific attention turns in the post-genomic era,
once again, to the properties of proteins, and particularly
to their preeminet role as catalysts, Professor
Leskovac's book, Comprehensive Enzyme Kinetics, will
have to be on every shelf. It will, however, rarely
find itself on the shelf, but much more in the hands
of researchers who will daily deploy in the laboratory
its wealth of useful information. Prepared under the
eye of W.W. Cleland, this demiurge of enzyme kinetics,
this magnum opus earns its title "comprehensive".
The systematic organization of the volume, which somehow
manages completeness in just over 400 pages, leads
the reader to a target subject easily. The clarity of
exposition will be as welcome to the experienced
kineticist as it will be to the beginner. This volume
is a singular achievement.

Book Description

Charles Hansen began his work with solvents in 1962, and almost immediately began producing new and groundbreaking results. Since then, his Hansen Solubility Parameters have been extensively used and proven valuable to a variety of industries, including coatings, adhesives, plastics, protective clothing, and environmental protection. They allow correlations and systematic comparisons previously not possible, such as polymer solubility, swelling and permeation, surface wetting and dewetting, the solubility of organic salts, and many biological applications. Until now, however, their seemingly universal ability to predict molecular affinities has been generally taken as semiempirical.Moving beyond the Hildebrand and Flory theories, Hansen found that his approach not only quantitatively describes hydrogen bonding and polar bonding in many types of systems, but in fact agrees with and extends the very general Prigogine theory. This explains why the correlations all seem to fit with an apparently "universal" 4: it results from the validity of applying the geometric mean rule to describe dispersion, permanent dipole-permanent dipole, and hydrogen bonding interaction in mixtures of unlike molecules. Hansen Solubility Parameters provides new tables of previously unpublished correlations and parameters. The author illuminates his text with practical examples related to coatings, biological systems, pigments, and fibers, and takes a general approach that makes this reference ideal for predicting compatibility, adsorption on surfaces, orientation toward materials of similar affinities (self-assembly), and other phenomena associated with solubility and affinity. Chemists, chemical engineers, and biochemists will find this book-the collected work and experience of the father of its concept-intriguing for its theory and invaluable for its data. ... Read more

Book Description

Broadly describes the essential topics of the organic chemicals industry
In the past two decades, the organic chemicals industry has undergone unprecedented restructuring, complicated feedstock problems, and massive shifts of capacity to developing countries. In the developed world, specialty chemicals have gained increasing significance. Although the fundamentals of organic chemical and polymer production have remained largely constant, one needs to be aware of the economic, structural, and political changes in the industry in order to understand its current state.
This much-expanded Second Edition of Industrial Organic Chemicals presents the various technologies and processes involved in the organic chemicals industry as an organized body of knowledge. It describes the chemistry of the seven basic building block chemicals and their derivatives, how they are manufactured, their economic importance, uses, and associated environmental issues. Also covered are two topics essential to an understanding of modern industrial chemistry-catalysis and polymer synthesis.
Key additions to this Second Edition include discussion of:
* Sustainability and "green" chemistry
* Dendrimers
* Metallocenes
* Chemicals in biotechnology
* Specialty chemicals for pharmaceuticals, electronics, fire retardation, fuel additives, foods, and other uses
* Economic, political, and social concepts for understanding future directions of the industry
Industrial Organic Chemicals, Second Edition presents the chemistry of both large-scale and specialty products while taking into account important political, environmental, and economic considerations. It provides both a narrative account of the evolution of today's industry from the viewpoint of authors intimately involved with the changes, and an essential reference for chemists, chemical engineers, plastics engineers, petroleum engineers, managers, executives, and policy makers working in and with the organic chemical industry.

Book Description

It happened in Manchester, May 12-14, 2004. - For the fifth time since the early 1990's the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Society of the Chemical Industry jointly held their 'flavours & fragrances' conference, this time in the Manchester Conference Centre of the UMIST Manchester.

The meeting saw over one hundred participants from one dozen countries, and was the largest of the series so far. In two and a half days divided into five sessions, twenty-five speakers from academia and industry alike presented their recent research results related to this exciting field, including Natural Products, Foods and Flavors, Perfumery and Olfaction, and last but not least Fragrance Chemistry.

Research is more than ever central to the F&F industry with its constant demand for innovation and its frequently changing trends. Especially, in the classic and well-explored domains of musks and amber odorants fascinating new discoveries were made only very recently, which proves the endless possibilities in the search for new aroma chemicals. This was also reflected in the logo of the conference, which featured Ambrocenide® as a new powerful ambery odorant that emerged from classical cedrene chemistry - and it is as well reflected in four of the sixteen conference papers that are collected in this special issue of Chemistry & Biodiversity.
With its focus on biorelevant chemicals, Chemistry & Biodiversity was predestined to publish the diverse highlight papers of the 'flavours & fragrances' conference. Fragrance and fragrance materials by definition elicit a biological response, serve as versatile signals, trigger the sense of smell and taste in various ways - and every odorant design is nothing more than 'chemistry probing nature'. But Fragrance Chemistry can also document and even preserve the biodiversity of scents, as was the topic of the lecture of Roman Kaiser, which had been published in advance as the first full paper of Chemistry & Biodiversity.

Book Description

Designed to help students not only understand what has been done in the past, but also be able to develop new concepts and to see new relationships in the future, Carroll's text emphasizes the nature and limitations of knowledge in chemistry, the need to question the underlying bases of familiar concepts, and the usefulness of exploring the role of complementary models in the understanding and practice of organic chemistry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to physical organic chemistry
Carroll's text does not attempt to teach organic chemistry per se. Rather, it tells the story of how many of our key ideas about organic chemistry have developed through the past 80 years. I certainly do not recommend it for introductory students, but it is an excellent read for anyone intending to pursue chemical research because it urges the reader to challenge yet not entirely disregard the simple, often incomplete ideas that are taught to introductory students.

5-0 out of 5 stars an impetus of scientific temper
I read this text in my organic chemistry core course.I am certain that this is not one of the "run of the mill" texts in organic chemistry flooding market today.I must say it's really an advanced text that gives you less of statements and more of proposals.It stimulates reader's scientific temper and makes the reader challenge the simplistic and dogmatic perspectives prevailed in the contemporary organic chemistry.As mentioned by the author he could refrain himself from making it an encyclopedia of organic chemistry but he gives us the rationale behind the stabilities and reactivities of organic molecules by which one can enter into the "dreadful endless jungle"(in Friedrich Wohler's words,1835) with innumerous mind-boggling reactions with appreciable amount of confidence.It is not recommended for the beginner in the subject but is a real beacon for the graduate students in the feild.

4-0 out of 5 stars I sent this back
because I had hoped for something to supplement the perspective from Lowry-Richardson's book. It is still a good book, though, especially for the undergraduate.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent adv organic text.
caroll's book is an excellent "advanced" organic textbook and reference. more of a teaching textbook than a strict reference guide, but all around great. it's without a doubt the best adv organic text i have come across (out of the 7 that i own and many others that i have glanced thru). highly recommended. ... Book Description

Organic Structure Analysis is an ideal text for upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate courses in organic spectroscopy. It provides students with the background necessary to effectively apply spectroscopic data in establishing features of molecular structure. Unique in its coverage, it is the only text that emphasizes strategies, interpretation, modern techniques, and problem solving. The text's major aim is to show how spectra can be efficiently examined in order to identify a molecule's major structural elements. It focuses on four techniques which are used on a day-to-day basis by most organic chemists: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectroscopy (MS), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS). Each chapter provides different perspectives on using spectroscopic data in a step-by-step process to establish structural features such as an overall carbon framework; the presence and location of functional groups; the regiochemistry and stereochemistry of substituents; and, finally, the absolute stereochemistry of chiral centers. Recent advances in NMR and MS have changed the way these components are introduced and used in organic spectroscopy courses. Unlike similar texts, this book provides ample, up-to-date coverage of the latest developments in NMR techniques.

Organic Structure Analysis adopts a practical approach to the subject which emphasizes building experience; the authors recognize that a combination of problem solving, access to data from models, and understanding the rules of spectral interpretation helps students to build expertise in structure determination from spectra. It outlines elements of theory, but with an emphasis on those directly relevant to spectral interpretation. The subjects are divided into two major sections; the first section provides extensive coverage of each of the individual methods, and the second emphasizes the way these strategies are blended together in the solution of problems based on combined spectra. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Organic Spectroscopy Made Clear
Crews is not a hardcore treatise of the subject. It does not cover the quantum mechanics behind spectroscopy and the complicated mathematical underneath the concept. Instead it discusses the fundamentals and results of such quantum calculations which apply to identification of organic compounds. Basic concepts of nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, ultra violet spectroscopy are thoroughly covered with examples and charts. Crews is a splendidly-written, straight-forward work that would be suitable for advanced undergraduates who had finished at least one year of organic chemistry, for those who pursue chemical research, and entering grad students. ...
