Book Description

This book is characterized by its problem-solving approach with extensive reference charts and tables. First published in 1962, this was the first book on the identification of organic compounds using spectroscopy. Now considered a classic, it can be found on the shelf of every Organic Chemist. The key strength of this text is the extensive set of real-data problems in Chapters 8 and 9. Even professional chemists use these spectra as reference data. Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds is written by and for organic chemists, and emphasizes the synergistic effect resulting from the interplay of the spectra. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great material, regular text...
The book is subdivided into only 3 of the 4 classical methods for spectrometric identification of compounds: IR, MS, and finally NMR (covering 1H, 13C and very little of 19F and 31P). UV is left out in this edition, so maybe getting a hold of the old edition's UV chapter (which is extremely well-written) might be desired. The MS and the IR chapters are also well-written and explained out. It is in the main technique (NMR) that the author fails to deliver the subject in a straightforward manner and lacks what I think is most important in this field: a large number of exercises and problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important book
This book provide a the basis of the fundamentals of Spectroscopy in many fields (IR, HNMR, CNMR, DEPT, COSY, HMBC, HMQC, TOCSY, MS, and much more) It has many real problems in an special chapter. And the most important, it has a lot of important tables and spectrums.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good in NMR Spectra analysis information, but weak elsewhere
This book lacked information in my opinion. Silverstein started a good project but just didn't give enough information about IR interpretation, mass spec, C-13 NMR, etc. He focussed on 2-D NMR a great deal, and I believe that there are much better textbooks on this subject. ... Read more

Book Description

This book will provide a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to organic process research and development in the pharmaceutical, fine
chemical, and agricultural chemical industries. Process R&D describes the steps taken, following synthesis and evaluation, to bring key
compounds to market in a cost-effective manner. More people are being hired for work in this area as increasing numbers of drug candidates are
identified through combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput screening. The book is directed to industrial (primarily organic) chemists, and
academicians (particularly those involved in a growing number of start-up companies) and students who need insight into industrial process R&D. Current books do not describe hands-on, step-by-step, approaches to solving process development problems, including route, reagent,
and solvent selection; optimising catalytic reactions; chiral syntheses; and "green chemistry." "Practical Process Research and Development" will be a valuable resource for researchers, managers, and graduate students.

* Provides insights into generating rugged, practical, cost-effective processes for the chemical preparation of "small molecules"
* Breaks down process optimization into route, reagent and solvent selection, development of reaction conditions, workup, crystallizations and more
* Includes over 100 tips for rapid process development
* Presents guidelines for implementing and troubleshooting processes

1-0 out of 5 stars dissapointed
I bought this book as required for my organic synthesis course. I am dissapointed with how little detail is given for each mechanism. Also the examples given are also very difficult to work out and no solution is givenfor each example.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book.
March's book is a tome, so I'm not sure how you could not use most of the same kinds of reactions that March uses.March's book is comprehensive, but Mundy and Ellerd's book is not bad because it is not comprehensive.Itis what it says it is- a complilation of name reactions. It doesn't gointo as much detail as March does, but it puts the name reactions in a niceformat, and that's just fine and dandy if that's how you're trying to goabout things. They put the name reactions in alphabetical order, give ageneric reaction, a mechanism, and many examples of that kind of reaction.

Book Description

The Logic of Chemical Synthesis The title of this three-part volume derives from a key theme of the book-the logic underlying the rational analysis of complex synthetic problems. Although the book deals almost exclusively with molecules of biological origin, which are ideal for developing the fundamental ideas of multistep synthetic design because of their architectural complexity and variety, the approach taken is fully applicable to other types of carbon-based structures. Part One outlines the basic concepts of retrosynthetic analysis and the general strategies for generating possible synthetic pathways by logical reduction of molecular complexity. Systematic retrosynthetic analysis and the concurrent use of multiple independent strategies to guide problem solving greatly simplify the task of devising a new synthesis. This way of thinking has been used for more than two decades by one of the authors to teach the analysis of difficult synthetic problems to many hundreds of chemists. A substantial fraction of the intricate syntheses which have appeared in the literature in recent years have been produced by these individuals and their students. Part Two, a collection of multistep syntheses, provides much integrated information on synthetic methods and pathways for the construction of interesting target molecules. These syntheses are the result of synthetic planning which was based on the general principles summarized in Part One. Thus, Part Two serves to supplement Part One with emphasis on the reactions of synthesis and on specific examples of retrosynthetically planned syntheses. Part Three is intended to balance the coverage of Parts One and Two and to serve as a convenient guide to the now enormous literature of multistep synthesis. Information on more than six hundred interesting multistep syntheses of biologically derived molecules is included. It is hoped that the structural range and variety of target molecules presented in Part Three will appeal to many chemists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Logic Of Organic Synthesis
Organic chemists and practicing researchers would agree that this book goes hand-in-hand with Nicoloau's Classics in Total Synthesis. While the latter discusses the total synthesis of some of the most fascinating molecules from all over the world, The Logic of Chemical Synthesis is a collection of E. J. Corey's (winner of 1990 Nobel Prize in Chemistry) total syntheses. The book deals almost exclusively with molecules of biological origin.

Part 1 of the book discusses the basic concepts of retrosynthetic analysis. Subtopics include transform-based strategies, structure-based strategies, topological strategies, stereochemical strategies, functional group-based strategies, and convergence of such strategies. Many examples are provided to illustrate these strategies. Molecules shown include Longifolene, Porantherine, Gibberellic acid, Picrotoxinin, and Ginkgolide B. The strategies help generate possible synthetic pathways by logical reduction of molecular complexity. In more plain words, the section help dissect complex molecules and reduce them into smaller precursors.

Part 2 focuses on how to apply the synthesis strategies from Part 1 in synthetic methods and pathways for the construction of many complex target molecules. The syntheses combine general principles presented in Part 1 and further enforces idea of retrosynthetic analysis by showing specific examples and emphasizing on reactions of synthesis. The section breaks down into macrocyclic structures, heterocyclic structures, sesquiterpenoids, polycyclic isoprenoids, prostanoids, and Leukotrienes. The syntheses presented here might be somewhat more difficult to comprehend at first sight. E. J. Corey here presents the straightforward synthesis of molecules without any didactic explanations and comments. Unlike the Nicoloau approach in Classics in Total Synthesis, retrosynthetic analysis of these complex targeting molecules is omitted. The book also skips all the reaction intermediates and reaction mechanisms. A good way to understand the syntheses would be to go backward and make sense out of each step.

Part 3 deals with current chemical literature pertaining to multistep syntheses. The book assumes knowledge of at least one course in organic syntheses which emphasize on synthetic strategies and named reactions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a text for beginners
This text is a wonderful insight into the mind and chemical synthetic strategies of E. J. Corey. However, it is really not a good tool for beginning students. The sections on synthons and retrosnthetic strategies are fairly useful for beginners, but the majority of the text are the examples of total syntheses from Corey's work. While these are greatly useful as an insight into Corey and complex synthesis, it is not the best book for beginning students. Too often the routes Corey uses/used involve rare and expensive reagents, seldom the first choice in most labs. Students who start with this text are often confused when approaching a problem in a more realistic (cost concerned) environment and are confused as to what should be the first attempt at a particular transformation--Corey often tells what worked without mentioning what else was tried first, suggesting to the beginning student that the route ultimately used was the first choice, which often is not the case. Long story short, for advanced students or professors of chemistry this is an ideal text, but it is not something a beginning graduate student wants to study without a great deal of other sources.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece in the realm of synthetic chemistry books
This is an extraordinarily well-written book which may be used as a learning tool for the starting Organic synthetic chemist, who, with no doubt, will enjoy himself by going through it. Many references are given after each synthesis, so that the reader can refer to specific journals and find out the actual reaction conditions that were carried out for each synthesis. Also, at the end of the book, a list of several natural products and their classical preparations are given with their respective journal citation. I believe that this book provides the organic syntehtic chemist with a feel for the area and its boundless applications and limits. I would recommend this book to anybody engaged in some kind of synthetic work, since there is good chance that this book will have the answer to some of their questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's useful for people who want to learn total synthesis
It teaches you general methods and logic of organic synthesis. There are a lot of example about total synthesis.

An essential handbook for the synthetic organic chemist. This book contains the invaluable techniques in determining retrosynthetic disconnections and should be in any synthetic chemist's library. Informative and to-the-point. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated
Standard textbook outlining most spectroscopic techniques as taught at undergraduate level. However, contains an embarrassingly dated treatment of mass spectrometry which can not have been rewritten since the 1970s. No mention of the biggest MS techniques in use today (electrospray and MALDI), a glaring oversight especially in light of Fenn & Tanaka winning Nobel Prizes in 2002 for just these developments. And time-of-flight instruments having a mass range of 5000 and resolution of 200? Several years before this book was published, commercial machines were available with mass ranges well over 100,000 Da and resolutions of 10,000+. Not only poor, but misleading. Overall, a rather derivative book that seems to have been written largely by consultation of more authoritative work (probably an early edition of Williams & Fleming).

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Good Reference on Organic Spectroscopy
The new edition of Pavis might be the twin to Crews' Organic Structural Analysis. This text discusses the fundamentals of 1H NMR, carbon-13 NMR, infrared spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy. The book also includes a section on 2D NMR. Pavia should not be missed by advanced undergraduate students who pursue research and practicing chemists who need quick reference on interpreting spectra.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Introductory Reference
This book is probably the best introductory reference on spectroscopy currently available, and I've checked out pretty much every book on the market right now. I'm a chemist, and this book got me through my senior synthesis and spectroscopy lab. Proton and carbon-13 NMR, IR, GC/MS, and UV/Vis are all covered in the book. It includes many handy tables of characteristic shifts for NMR, characteristic absorbances for IR and UV/Vis, and a nifty table on common GC/MS fragments by m/e. The chapter on 2D NMR is lousy, but that's not really introductory material anyhow. The UV/Vis chapter is kind of cursory, but UV/Vis isn't all that useful.
This is a book that I intend to hang on to for a while.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great books for students in chemistry
I have found this book to a great tool for students of organic chemistry especially those wanting to further their education in graduate school or medical school. It is eay to read and can also be used a "teach yourself" book. I recomend this book to anyone who is a bit shaky in interpreting NMR, IR, and Mass Spec. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is second only to March
It's amazing to me that Smith is able to gather so many resources and consolidate them into one place. Everything is there. Reagents. Cross references to books that deal only in reagents, and so on and so on.

Often, one sees textbooks that give reactions and simply assume that they will work without citing a reference where someone has actually gone through the trouble to see if the reaction really will work. (This, I have found, is the quickest way to waste time in the lab. The easier it is to locate a protocol, the higher your lab productivity is.)

It's also good to see that he's taken the time and trouble to whittle away some of the pretty colors that a lot of books put in in order to try to draw the reader's attention away from the glaring lack of substance.

This book may, in the next few years, supercede the March text because a good number of his references are from within the past 5 years (50%, I believe), and it is such that if you are working in the lab and need to find *that* particular reference, then you can easily go and look it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent advanced text.
The 2/e is a comprehensive look at modern methods in organic synthesis.

Smith avoids the trend, common in many books, of using too many colors and myriad worthless illustrations. He instead provides a clean, easy to read volume for the advanced undergraduate or graduate organic student.

The references at the end of each chapter are outstanding. There are often in excess of 75 citations per chapter, readily allowing further study.

I would like to respond to the criticism of some reviewers regarding typographical errors. The 2/e does seem to be much better than the 1/e in this regard. Also the author maintains a well documented list of typos on his website.

All in all, this book is easily the rival of Carey & Sundberg's Part B and well worth the investment for any organic/pharm chemists out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm Excited about the 2nd Edition
It is almost like dream comes true when I saw the revised, new second edition out at the bookstore. The imrpoved edition not only has amended the errors or typo in its predecessor, but has graciously added new/updated materials in synthesis. You may see it as an equivalent to Jerry March's Advanced Organic Chemistry but a whole different approach. The sections on oxidations, reductions, and organoboranes are excellent. Since organic synthesis is a broad and infinitely growing field, not a single book covers all the principles and gadgets of organic chemistry. Use it as an encyclopedia or along with popular title like Nicholaou's Classics in Total Synthesis in order to enjoy the wonders of organic chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Synthesis, 2nd edition
I am the author and rated it high for obvious reasons. I was not going to rate it, but could not submit this form without it. I am taking the unusual step of writing because virtually all current reviews refer to the 1st edition - NOT the 2nd. This NEW book has been completely rewritten and while there are probably errors, it is NOT error-riddled like the 1st edition. I simply ask people to take a look with a fresh eye. McGraw-Hill and I have tried very hard to make it a quality book, and I am confident it will be very useful. If you have any questions or comments please contact me and I will do my best to answer them.
Thanks for your indulgence.

2-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful
I used this book as an undergrad in a graduate course and our assignments consisted of discovering all of the errors and attempting to correct them. It is a good reference book for name reactions, but as far as stereochemistry is concerned be VERY CAREFUL!! ... Read more
