The book is your source to a plethora of additional problems. Yet don't expect the exam problems to be similar to those you find in this Schaum series. You might find some of these problems extra strenuous or over-simplified. For all the major functional groups, the book does provide lots of practice problems in reaction products, reactivity, and stereochemistry. You might need to cover up the solutions which immediately follow the questions. Students should foucs on soloving the mechanism-type of problems from textbooks before looking at this book. Check this out from your library!

Book Description

Marine natural products have attracted the attention of biologists and chemists the world over for the past five decades. As a result of the potential for new drug discovery, marine natural products have attracted scientists from different disciplines, such as organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, pharmacology, biology and ecology. This interest has led to the discovery of almost 8,500 marine natural products to date and many of the compounds have shown very promising biological activity. The ocean is considered to be a great source of potential drugs.

Bioactive Marine Natural Products is the first book available that covers all aspects of bioactive marine natural products. It fills the void in the literature for bioactive marine natural products. The book covers various aspects of marine natural products and it is hoped that all the major classes of bioactive compounds are included. Different classes of marine organisms and the separation and isolation techniques are discussed. The chemistry and biology of marine toxins, peptides, alkaloids, nucleosides and prostanoids are discussed in detail. Biological, toxicological and clinical evaluations are also dealt with to ensure that the book may be adopted at any stage by any practicing organic chemist or biologist, working in academia or in R&D divisions of pharmaceutical companies. Each chapter in the book includes an abstract to highlight the major points discussed in the text and concluding remarks are given. References to books, monographs, review articles and original papers are provided at the end of each chapter.

Book Description

X-ray crystallography has been a vital method for studying the structure of proteins and other macromolecules for many years. As the importance of proteins continues to grow in a wide range of research fields from basic biochemistry and biophysics to pharmaceutical development and biotechnology, more and more researchers have found a knowledge of X-ray diffraction to be an indispensable tool. Professor Drenth, recognized internationally for his numerous contributions to crystallographic research, has provided a technically rigorous introduction to the subject. This book provides the theoretical background necessary to understand how the structure of proteins is determined at atomic resolution. It is intended to be an introduction for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and established scientists who want to apply protein crystallography in their own endeavors, or need to understand the subject in order to critically evaluate the literature. Principles of Protein X-ray Crystallography is appropriate as a textbook for courses in biochemistry and biophysics, including protein structure and function, structural biology, and macromolecular structure. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Decent text, but better Crystallography books are out there.
Drenth is a decent enough book. The figures are ok, nothing great. They mostly just drive home the point made in the text, but are not instructive in and upon themselves. If you are looking to get a basic understanding of X-Ray crystallography and its uses to solve protein structure try the Gale Rhodes book. If you are looking for a more rigorous book try the Michael M. Woolfson book. Drenth tries to be the middle ground between the two. The subject though is too complicated to do it justice like that. Either keep it simple or go in depth.

Book Description

Organic chemistry has long been recognized as an essential ingredient in the education of scientists in a wide range of fields, particularly in the life sciences. Indeed, as more and more disciplines come into contact with organic chemistry, new connections are constantly being forged. By extension, a career in medicine-an applied life science-is also becoming more and more dependent on organic chemistry, and not just because medical schools these days take special notice of the grade in organic! The practice of medicine nowadays increasingly requires a knowledge of the behavior of molecules. The molecular basis of pathogen action and of therapeutic agents are two obvious examples. These are developing areas at the moment, but there can be no doubt that the physician of tomorrow will have to be even more of a scientist-an organic chemist, among other things-than his or her predecessors. Accordingly, this book is written not just for the chemistry major, but is aimed instead at the person who wants a broad, yet modern introduction to the subject. General principles are stressed, because it is impossible to memorize all the details of this vast subject these days. One can, however, learn to make connections and to apply widely a set of organizing general principles, and that helps to render the prolific detail more manageable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing organic chemistry text!
Dr. Jones's text is the best chemistry textbook I have used to date. This text is excellent for anyone taking sophomore/junior level undergraduate organic chemistry or for anyone who needs a comprehensive overview of the basics of organic chemistry. It is very readable and easy to follow; Dr. Jones's style of addressing the reader directly gives the text a personal feel to it.Highly recommended to any student of organic chemistry!! A superb textbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest
I have 2 main complaints about this book. First of all, the author will go on and on and on for pages giving a detailed explanation only to say in the end that it is not correct. He thinks this is helpful, however, it is extremely confusing and an enormous waste of time. Also, he lacks the ability to present material in a simple, logical and concise way. For example, when presenting substitution and elimination reaction mechanisms, he goes on for 75 pages (yes, the chapter is 75 pages long!!) yet never simply lists the basics for determining which mechanism will occur. All you want is a simple table, for example, 1) SN2 - favored by primary carbon, polar aprotic solvent, strong nucleophile, etc. 2)SN1........If you have to get this book, purchasing the solution manual is a must. One good thing, the author is entertaining - read footnotes, etc. - and he tells cute anecdotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome
If you're normal, then you probably aren't too excited about taking Organic Chemistry. However, Jones Organic Chemistry is a much much better text than many of the orgo books out there. The book is set up the way that you should learn chemistry, the way that it makes sense, and not the way that many chemistry classes are being taught at many universities.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!
This has to be one of the worst ever organic chemistry books ever devised. The author will give a detailed explanation with illustrations and at the very end of the discussion , once you have committed the information to memory, the book will say that it does not happen this way. The author seems to wax poetic, however,he gives no simple list of rules for common nomenclature problems, for example,I defy you to find a list of how to name alkanes under IUPAC rules. All you want is a simple list , for example,1) find the longest chain of carbons, 2) .........instead of this you will be exposed to extraneous quotes from plays and movies as well as anecdotes from the authors life. Another complaint is that the book gives several good questions in the text and at the end of the chapter, but NO answers in the back.If you want the answers, you have to purchase the 40.00 solution manual. My condolences to you if your o-chem teacher has been hoodwinked into using this book bythe publisher, the only advice I can give is that you purchase the solutions manual, because this gives some very detailed explanations.Good luck, because you will need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Orgo made easy! (well, maybe not easy, but possible)
This book is why I kept my sanity in the 2nd semester of orgo. chem. I took the class using this book the year before I transferred to a different university, and I've loaned it to some of my new friends struggling with orgo here. They've thanked me because unlike their texts, Jones' text actually explained concepts so that they made sense. ... Read more

Book Description

A practical introduction to orbital interaction theory and its applications in modern organic chemistry Orbital interaction theory is a conceptual construct that lies at the very heart of modern organic chemistry. Comprising a comprehensive set of principles for explaining chemical reactivity, orbital interaction theory originates in a rigorous theory of electronic structure that also provides the basis for the powerful computational models and techniques with which chemists seek to describe and exploit the structures and thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities of molecules. Orbital Interaction Theory of Organic Chemistry, Second Edition introduces students to the fascinating world of organic chemistry at the mechanistic level with a thoroughly self-contained, well-integrated exposition of orbital interaction theory and its applications in modern organic chemistry. Professor Rauk reviews the concepts of symmetry and orbital theory, and explains reactivity in common functional groups and reactive intermediates in terms of orbital interaction theory. Aided by numerous examples and worked problems, he guides readers through basic chemistry concepts, such as acid and base strength, nucleophilicity, electrophilicity, and thermal stability (in terms of orbital interactions), and describes various computational models for describing those interactions. Updated and expanded, this latest edition of Orbital Interaction Theory of Organic Chemistry includes a completely new chapter on organometallics, increased coverage of density functional theory, many new application examples, and worked problems. The text is complemented by an interactive computer program that displays orbitals graphically and is available through a link to a Web site. Orbital Interaction Theory of Organic Chemistry, Second Edition is an excellent text for advanced-level undergraduate and graduate students in organic chemistry. It is also a valuable working resource for professional chemists seeking guidance on interpreting the quantitative data produced by modern computational chemists. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Orbitals forever
Molecular orbitals are mathematical constructs rigorously derived from the application of quantum mechanical laws. Their pictorial depiction in term of spheres and lobes, however, has had a tremendous impact on chemistry, especially in the qualitiative interpretation of chemical phenomena. This book represents a testimonial of this fact, showing you applications ranging from pericyclic reactions to organometallics and photochemistry. Chapter 10 is of particular interest for those working on biomolecules since it shows how this powerful theoretical tool can be applied to rationalize the hydrogen bond interaction (of course the examples refer to simple systems and is up to your ability trying to exploit those concepts to disentangle the nature of a given protein-ligand interaction!).
Exercises for each chapter have been clustered in Appendix B, at the end of the book, while Appendix A contains a short derivation of the Hartree-Fock (HF) theory, post-HF methods and density functional theory. The latter appendix, however, could have been either entirely omitted from the book or integrated within chapters 1-15. All in all, this book is worth to be in your bookshelf and, if possibe, complement it with the classical work "Orbital Interactions in Chemistry" (a masterpiece written in 1985) by Albright, Burdett and Whangbo. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 STARS --Say goodbye to Morrison and McMurry?
A mechanistic approach to learning organic chemistry seems to make a whole lot more sense than memorizing/regurgitating the slew of reactivities available for each functional group along the way. Why then do we not have a text which allows us to do this? A few authors in the past have attempted to construct a text which views organic chemistry from a mechanistic (rather than funtional-group)standpoint, but none have been able to offer something an UNDERGRADUATE could embrace. Hornback has clearly and logically presented this often intimidating subject here, and should be praised for hurdling the barrier to offer the first readable mechanism-oriented text. ... Read more

Book Description

Widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why?In John McMurry's words: "I have been asked hundreds of times over the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words.I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it had been explained to me years ago."Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry text applies to McMurry: it works!Mainstream in level, McMurry's coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics.McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that students who are not yet versed in the subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the what of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the why.Within this primary organization, the author places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities. Currently in use at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada, McMurry's ORGANIC CHEMISTRY is also an international bestseller from the United Kingdom to the Pacific Rim. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Organic Textbook
This is an excellent textbook for the ever-dreaded Organic Chemistry. Clear and well written, it made the two semesters spent grinding out carbon compounds slightly less painful than they would otherwise have been, and it still sits on my shelf as a very handy reference tool and was quite valuable while studying for the MCAT. It's a tad pricey, but if the class you're taking has a shaky text, seriously consider trading it in for this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's not that great!
I have completed the full series of O'Chem courses, up to Chapter 30. I don't agree with previous reviewers. First, this book does not go over all the mechanisms for all the reactions. Some reactions have mechanism, and some do not. Thus, it is not complete. On your exam, you better pray your instructor is kind enough NOT to give you the mechanism that is missing. Second, sometime the mechanism illustrated is either shortened or plain wrong. Third, I wish the author just says straight out in the introduction section what he wanted to accomplish. I recommend that you should read through the whole chapter in one sitting. It is ok that you don't understand the first half of each chapter because the good stuffs are at the second half of each chapter. Smile, sometime you read through the whole chapter, and you still don't understand it. Again, don't blame yourself because the author had chosen not to tell you the whole story. Just lots of bits and pieces. That is why you can not put things together. I will tell you something important next, and I am sure I will get tons of flame. But for your benefit, here I go: Don't blame yourself that you are stupid because you don't understand this stuff. Why? because most O'Chem books are designed to weed you out of medical school. Each chapter, I can summarize in two or three important sentences. But, most book will write on and on until you are completely lost. O'chem courses are designed to weed you out. Remember that. Go ahead and flame me. I am just telling you something that most people know it is true, but they just don't tell you straight out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Intro and Review!
I love this book. I used it in my undergradute course in organic chemistry and found it to be extremely valuable. The explanations were virtually all easy to follow, good summaries at the end of the chapter, and an intelligent overall layout. This isn't one of those books where you need to read the chapters over and over to figure out what the author is trying to say. The problems were also well designed. When used in conjunction with the solutions manual I found studying for tests to be straighforward. I also used this as a stand alone review for the organic portion of the chemistry GRE subject test and found myself very prepared come test time. I've looked at many organic texts (I own 4!)and this is by far the best. Buy it if you are serious about learning your O-chem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but pricey
THis is an awesome organic chemistry textbook. It is layed out very well, and even has "reaction summaries" at the end of the chapters to group together all reactions covered. The study guide is also a must with this book; even though the back of the textbook has the answers to selected chapter and unit questions, the study guide provides the solutions AND how they are achieved to the other questions. The only drawback to this set is the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The text you should use, even if your class doesn't
I was 'assigned' a different organic chemistry text when taking organic, but I used this one whenever possible. This is the easiest Organic book to comprehend. It states things briefly without going into unnecessary detail. It will help you to understand organic chemistry to the level most college classes require. In my opinion, other textbooks were too detailed and long-winded. This one gets right to the point. Organic chemistry is significant challenge and its students look far and wide for help. You should begin by using this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Sol-Gel Science presents the physical and chemical principles of the sol-gel process at a level suitable for graduate students and practitioners in the field. This book defines sol-gel rather broadly as the preparation of ceramic materials by preparation of a sol, gelation of the sol, and removal of the solvent. The sol may be produced from inorganic or organic precursors (e.g., nitrates or alkoxides) and may consist of dense oxide particles of polymeric clusters. Brinker expands the definition of ceramics to include organically modified materials, often called ORMOSILs or CERAMERs. The emphasis of the author' treatment is on the science, rather than the technology, of sol-gel processing. Although a chapter on applications is included, more detailed discussion is available in proceedings of conferences and in the recent collection of articles, Sol-Gel Technology for thin films, Fibers, Preforms, Electronics, and Specialty Shapes (Noyes, Park Ridge, N.J., 1988), edited by professor Lisa Klein. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Knowledge about Sol Gel Science
Perhaps it's trite to say this, but Brinker and Scherer's _Sol Gel Science_ is *the* indispensible desktop reference for the sol-gel chemist. Though now over a decade old, the topics covered (only a smattering of which are mentioned in the editorial review above) are so fundamental that it remains one of the most often cited sol-gel references, both in texts and refereed journal articles. The layout of the book takes the reader through the entire sol-gel formation process, from reaction to casting to drying, curing and other post-modificiations, with a chapter devoted to each step - permitting this book either to be read cover-to-cover (for the interested newcomer or as a text for a course in sol-gel science) or to be referenced as necessary by the more familiar reader.

C. Jeffrey Brinker, now affiliated with Sandia National Laboratories as well as the University of New Mexico, remains the preeminent researcher and one of the most-often cited authors in his field, continuing research on self-assembled nanostructures, porosity-tailored materials, organic-inorganic hybrids, and related topics.

George W. Scherer, professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of Princeton University, also maintains a professional involvement in sol-derived gels, glasses, and ceramics, among other areas of interest, and is the author of several patents, as well as innumerable scientific papers, in these fields.

Though more-recent texts may be more up-to-date in terms of research cited, especially areas pertinent to nanotechnology, this book's position as a compendium of knowledge in the field of sol-gel science has not diminished with age and is highly reccomended. ... Read more
