Book Description

A comparative examination of electron-deficient species -from leading researchers in the field.

The Borane, Carborane, Carbocation Continuum explores the emerging understanding of the similarities of properties and behavior shared by these electron-deficient species. Based on the work presented at a trailblazing symposium held at the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute of the University of Southern California, it brings together the contributions of distinguished scientists from around the world, including Nobel Prize winners George A. Olah and William N. Lipscomb, to illustrate the results of research on the structures and bonding characteristics of boranes, carboranes, and carbocations.

As electron-deficient compounds find a place in today's high-field NMR systems and other cutting-edge areas, this unique volume contains important information for advanced students as well as professionals working in organic, inorganic, or physical chemistry, with sections on:
* Patterns of structure in boranes and carboranes -including vertex homogeneity, boron cluster patterns, and seco-systematization of boranes and heteroboranes

Book Description

Polymer Solutions: An Introduction to Physical Properties offers a fresh, inclusive approach to teaching the fundamentals of physical polymer science. Students, instructors, and professionals in polymer chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, engineering, materials, and textiles will find Iwao Teraoka’s text at once accessible and highly detailed in its treatment of the properties of polymers in the solution phase.

Teraoka’s purpose in writing Polymer Solutions is twofold: to familiarize the advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate student with basic concepts, theories, models, and experimental techniques for polymer solutions; and to provide a reference for researchers working in the area of polymer solutions as well as those in charge of chromatographic characterization of polymers. The author’s incorporation of recent advances in the instrumentation of size-exclusion chromatography, the method by which polymers are analyzed, renders the text particularly topical.
Subjects discussed include:

  • Real, ideal, Gaussian, semirigid, and branched polymer chains
  • Polymer solutions and thermodynamics
  • Static light scattering of a polymer solution
  • Dynamic light scattering and diffusion of polymers
  • Dynamics of dilute and semidilute polymer solutions

Study questions at the end of each chapter not only provide students with the opportunity to test their understanding, but also introduce topics relevant to polymer solutions not included in the main text. With over 250 geometrical model diagrams, Polymer Solutions is a necessary reference for students and for scientists pursuing a broader understanding of polymers. ... Read more

Book Description

Introduction to Organic Photochemistry John D. Coyle, The Open University, Milton Keynes The purpose of this book is to provide an introductory account of the major types of organic photochemical reactions, to enable those with a prior knowledge of basic organic chemistry to appreciate the differences between processes which occur photochemically (through an electronically excited state) and those that occur thermally (directly from the electronic ground state). The material is organized according to organic functional groups, in parallel with the approach adopted in most general textbooks on organic chemistry. In this respect it differs from many of the existing, older organic photochemistry texts. The first chapter provides an account of the distinctive features of photochemical reactions, and a physical/mechanistic framework for the descriptions in the rest of the book. The overall emphasis is on organic photoreactions potentially useful in synthesis. The book thus integrates this branch of chemistry with broader aspects of the subject, and introduces the reader to important applications of organic photochemistry. ... Read more

Book Description

More than any other branch of organic chemistry, synthesis has improved our understanding of the structure, dynamics, and transition of molecules. The availability of sophisticated tools and new techniques has made organic synthesis more challenging than ever for those in the field. This updated edition of the 1970 work highlights significant and intriguing synthetic achievements: their ingenuity in design, extent of stereochemical control, new reactions, and new reagents. Approximately 100 examples illustrate various aspects of organic synthesis, with particular emphasis on bond-making and bond-breaking, dissymetry, conformation, and stereoelectric considerations. Each describes the synthesis of a natural product or of an unusual or strained molecule. Numerous flow sheets and perspective structural formulas illustrate the force of arguments predicting the stereochemical outcome of important steps. Also included is a type-transformation index which highlights some less common reactions. ... Read more

Book Description

In the 1980s, capillary electrophoresis (CE) joined high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as the most powerful separation technique available to analytical chemists and biochemists. Published research using CE grew from 48 papers in the year of commercial introduction (1988) to 1200 in 1997. While only a dozen major pharmaceutical and biotech companies have reduced CE to routine practice, the applications market is showing real or potential growth in key areas, particularly in the DNA marketplace for genomic mapping and forensic identification. For drug development involving small molecules (including chiral separations), one CE instrument can replace 10 liquid chromatographs in terms of speed of analysis. CE also uses aqueous rather than organic solvents and is thus environmentally friendlier than HPLC. The second edition of Practical Capillary Electrophoresis has been extensively reorganized and rewritten to reflect modern usage in the field, with an emphasis on commercially available apparatus and reagents. This authoritative and very comprehensible treatment builds on the author's extensive experience as an instructor of short courses for the American Chemical Society and for industry.

Key Features
* Illustrated with detailed diagrams of electrophoretic phenomena
* Offers step-by-step methods development schemes
* Presents techniques for developing quantitative, robust, and precise methods
* Includes an extensive troubleshooting guide
* Updates and greatly expands on the first edition-more than 50% of the text is new
* Written by an internationally recognized scientist who is an instructor for American Chemical Society short courses on HPCE

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST ORGO STUDY AID- HANDS DOWN!
I just finished organic 1, and I could NOT have made it through without THIS LITTLE GEM! We were assigned the WADE Organic book, which was not bad, the "hints" were useful, but who has time to read through those dense confusing chapters meticulously- it's too much talk when what you really need is the BIG PICTURE of what is going on!This book is a little POWERHOUSE-- it gives you the barebone rules and laws which you can easily read and memorize--over and over again! You can't do reactions without MEMORIZATION-- you need the clear-cut rules first before analyzing anything. Now, it's not perfect, (but what is?), some reactions are not mentioned, but combine this with your NOTES (take down EVERYTHING THE PROF. SAYS of course!) and you'll fill in all the gaps and be able to UNDERSTAND SN1, SN2, E2,E1 and all the fun alkene, alkane, alkyne reactions that will rapidly come your way! With this baby and your class notes, forget about reading those 1000+ pages of bulky verbose confusing textbooks! what a waste of time!
Combine this with your notes and you will "get it"! I was able to make some KILLER clear-cut, one page - reaction charts just from this book! IF YOU NEED ORGO HELP, READ THIS BOOK OVER AND OVER AGAIN, (+your notes) & TRUST ME, YOU WILL GET IT!

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
This book does not help you at all, it just confuses you.I'm in organic I now, and I have not used it once.Maybe another author would have been better. It is not a substituion for the text book.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's easy, so do not expect a lot from it.
"Schaum's easy outline:organic chemistry" is a packbackable book that is affordable for your budget. However, as it is an outline, it only functions as a guideline: briefly contains the very main topics in organic chemistry. My reccomendation is to use this book as a guide only because your organic textbook (whatever it is, mine is Brown and Foote's Organic Chemistry) has more details and good explanations.

4-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive
Overall, I was prettysatisfied with this book. It contained a lot of general information as well as specific examples. To make the most out of the book, you need a pretty good understanding of organic chemistry to begin with. I used it after reading my own textbook, and then read this book to reemphasize the information. it helped me check my understanding of the material. ... Read more
