4-0 out of 5 stars great for beginners, but too few references
This is a great introductory book. Beautifully edited, very well written, with a lot of information to start digging each subject; I just missed a few more references in each chapter, and also more references to journals and not just other books, and then I would have been a 5 star. ... Read more

Book Description

A More Accessible Approach to Thermodynamics In this third edition, you'll find a modern approach to applied thermodynamics. The material is presented in sufficient detail to provide a solid understanding of the principles of thermodynamics and its classical applications. Also included are the applications of chemical engineering thermodynamics to issues such as the distribution of chemicals in the environment, safety, polymers, and solid-state-processing. To make thermodynamics more accessible, several helpful features are included. Important concepts are emphasized in marginal notes throughout each chapter. Illustrations have also been added to demonstrate the use of these concepts and to provide a better understanding of the material. Boxes are used to highlight equations so that students can easily identify the end results of analyses. You can also visit the text's web site to download additional problem sets, computer programs to solve thermodynamic and phase behavior problems, and Mathcad(r) worksheets used for problem solving. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Prerequisite: P-Chem
This book is applauded for its precision and details, but complained for its level of rigor that is not welcomed by an average undergraduate student. Students should have taken physical chemistry or at least be familiar with concepts of thermodynamic mixing in order to read this book.

Discussion on basic laws of thermodynamics is very terse that readers should look elsewhere (i.e. Atkins' Physical Chemistry or McQuarrie's Physical Chemistry: A Molecular Approach) for such topics. Treatise on liquids, chemical equilibrium, and real substances is excellent. Overall this is not a bad text if you've met the prerequisite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Thermo Book - Not for the weak minded
A truly excellent text on chemical thermodynamics...every topic is throughly and accurately explained in detail. However, this book is too intense for the average engineering student. But if you are sick of your lame thermo text and/or professor and want to know the real meat and potatoes of chemical thermo...this is a good place to start. This book teaches thermo at a level required of all ChemE's and ME's 20 or 30 years ago...it's too bad enigneering education has weaken to the point where people complain about a class "obviously being too hard because the majority of the class failed"...maybe the majority of class didn't have the desire or intelligence to be an engineer.

5-0 out of 5 stars *The* fundamental work. A "Strong Buy" for anybody!
If you know more or less what eng and or chem thermo is about and feel more advanced and confident in this subject and do not need/want a 'Book-For-Dummies', then go and purchase the world-wide highly renowned textbook by Stanley I. Sandler. This has now become the definitive standard and top reference in class. It is full of words and formulas, tables, charts and illustrations, examples, problems, diagrams and appendices, all presented in a modern, attractive manner. You can use it as a 'detailed text' or as a 'look-up reference'. Due to the nature of the subject matter, this book is not 'easy': a complete, detailed, thorough book on a hard, dry subject will result in a hard (and dry?) reading for anybody! Nevertheless, the modern, beautiful presentation will make the reader's efforts worthwhile. This is not an "enjoyable" reading as such, but the most in-depth, thorough, detailed, modern treatment for class. I consider this book a must-have reference on your ChemE bookshelf. If you go for *one* book only on thermo, then buy Sandler's. rated: Strong Buy for anybody. Even after having mastered this subject, this book will *still* serve as a valuable tool: as a detailed ("advanced") intro text and as a fine look-up reference. Sandler's book *is* a monograph, and it should be titled "Fundamentals of Chemical Thermodynamics" only, because it does not cover much of "Engineering Thermodynamics" (see books by Moran/Shapiro or Yunus A. Cengel for fantastic intro tomes on eng thermo. see also book by Smith/VanNess/Abbott 2001.). This book is a challenge, but if you are a smart learner and can handle this hard subject matter, there is no better intro or advanced text on chemical thermodynamics, chemical engineering thermodynamics or phase/physical/chemical equilibria! No doubt a 5-stars rating.
Please also read my pos reviews of thermo books by Noel de Nevers 2002 and Stanley M. Walas 1985. See also my neg review of thermo book by Smith/VanNess/Abbott 2001. For a complete listing of relevant thermo titles have a look at table 8-1, pages 8.2-8.4, in Poling/Prausnitz/O'Connell 5th ed. c2001.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bringing chaos to order
Reading this book is like peeling an onion in that it has no well defined core. It is also like walking into a jungle without a map since it is so badly organized. His skill for manipulating equations is marginal, making things even worse. In a few places, the author confuses a necessary condition with a sufficient condition. The book also contains many logical and conceptual errors. It would have hit the garbage a long time ago if it wasn't a textbook.

Having said that, the book has several good sections in it, along with a wealth of information, if you know what (and where) you are looking for. Most of basic elements are in the book. But, you have to know how to weave a coherent story out of them in order to benefit from the book. I should add that problems at the end of each chapter are quite good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masters level
This book is clearly written for the Master level student. During my Bachelor (Chem Eng) study this book was required. I found the text a bit above Bachelor level and wouldn't recommend it to anyone at this level. However if you are studying thermodynamics at Master level (or above) you'll find this book of great value. ... Read more

Book Description

Hardbound. This book concentrates on industrially relevant reactions which are catalyzed by heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. Homogeneous catalysis by metal complexes is treated jointly with heterogeneous catalysis using metallic and non-metallic solids. In both areas the high degree of sophistication of spectroscopic techniques and theoretical modelling has led to an enormous increase in our understanding at the molecular level. This holds for the kinetics of the reactions and the reactivities of the catalysts, as well as for the syntheses of the catalytic materials. The development of catalysis science since the first edition of this book has necessitated a thorough revision, including special chapters on biocatalysis, catalyst characterization and adsorption methods. The multidisciplinary nature of catalysis is reflected in the choice of a novel combination of basic disciplines which will be refreshing and inspiring to readers. ... Read more

Book Description

The study of capillarity is in the midst of a veritable explosion. Hence the temptation to write a new book, aiming at an audience of students. What is offered here is not a comprehensive review of the latest research but rather a compendium of principles. How does one turn a hydrophilic surface into one that is hydrophobic, and vice versa? We will describe a few solutions. Some rely on chemical treatments, such as coating a surface with a molecular layer. Others are based on physics, for instance by controlling the roughness of a surface. We will also examine the dynamics of wetting. Drops that spread spontaneously do so at a rate that slows down with time. They can be tricked into covering large areas by spreading them suddenly. We will describe a few of the many facets of their dynamical properties. Special additives are required for water to foam. Foams are desirable in a shampoo but can be a nightmare in a dishwasher detergent. Antifoam agents have been developed and are well known, but how do they work? It is also possible to generate bubbles and foams without special additives, for example in pure and viscous liquids such as glycerin, molten glass, and polymers. As we will see, the laws of draining and bursting then turn out to be quite different from the conventional ones. This book will enable the reader to understand in simple terms such questions that affect every day life -- questions that also come up during in industry. The aim is to view systems that often prove quite complex in a way that isolates a particular physical phenomenon, often avoiding descriptions requiring advanced numerical techniques will oftentimes in favor of qualitative arguments. This strategy may at times jeopardize scientific rigor, but it makes it possible to grasp things efficiently and to invent novel situations. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars For beginners only
I disagree with the above assertion that this book is suitable for a graduate course. This book is the strained peas of the electronic structure library and is unsuitable for anyone with experience in the field or basic math. Levine's book is a better place to start, but far too thorough on the math. McQuarrie is at best 'cute', and certainly not worth more than $40.

I personally think the ESQC Summer School course books are the best thing available for learning quantum chemistry. Ultimately, though, all roads in QC lead through Ostlund and Szabo. If you want to learn ab initio, get Ostlund and Szabo, the read Parr's book on DFT. That should get you up to speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rockin good fun...
I'd say this book is an excellent book at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Contrary to one of the reviewers. It's very straightforward, and written with the less gifted 'physics' student in mind. It's not the only book you'll need, but it certainly helps understand all the rest of them.Meaning that derivations are crystal clear, and difficult math is actually worked out on almost every occasion. It's got really nice coverage of the basics, which leads up to the H atom, multielectron atoms and the variety of computational methods for use with them, and the same level of coverage with molecules. And there is a chapter on time dependent solutions, which I haven't yet read. It's even got pictures of studly physicists in it. I'd totally recommend this out of all the other quantum books I've encountered. Though you will need to supplement it with other books if you go deep into quantum. And there's some development of spin, but not the full deal. Angular momentum could have been treated a bit more thoroughly as well, for a graduate class. I think there is a snippet or two about bra-ket notation. But that's best learned from a nice quantum mechanics book really, none of the chemistry oriented books cover that aspect well, because it's really rooted more in the 'physics' interpretation of quantum. I'd also point out that the books I've seen that cover the theory exhaustively are pretty short on well worked out example problems, and are kind of hard to understand sometimes. Not the case with this book.

Anyways, I wouldn't have taken the time to write this if I didn't think it was money well spent. My advisor even likes it, and he got his PhD in Feynman diagrams.

4-0 out of 5 stars The abc of Quantum Chemistry
Unlike Atkins, this text does not oversimplify things, and unlike Levine it doesn't make them heavy going. Rather this work is probably the best introduction to Quantum Chemistry that any undergraduate can ever have. The historical background of the discoveries, the eloquent description of the methods employed, the necessary justifications to help you understand the subject and the often annoying presence of Dirac's vector notation being ommited whenever possible all contributes to boost your interest in the subject. This is the perfect launch pad for the early classics such as Pauling's 'Introduction to Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Chemistry' or Murrell, Tedder and Kettle's 'Valence Theory'...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good undergraduate text
This easily read book goes over the basics of quantum chemistry. It is designed for the undergraduate, and it is not acceptable for any graduate student.

5-0 out of 5 stars great but easy
The best part of this book is that it is easy to understand. McQuarrie goes through every single math step and you are never too lost. Everybody I know who used this book liked this book. There is also a solution manual for ALL of the problems, I don't see it listed on Amazon. The only drawback of this book is that some of it is too easy: for instance it skips bra and ket notation entirely. So it's not really appropriate for physicists or theoretical chemists. I definitely recommend this book, and get the solution manual with it too if you can. END ... Read more

Book Description

This comprehensive text is intended to provide upper level undergraduate students with an investigation of heterogeneous natural systems in the environment. The links between and within the various environmental components -- air, water, soil -- are emphasized. There has been insufficient material of this type in existence that supplies both the depth of chemistry needed to explain natural processes and the breadth of material that would present a well rounded introduction to such systems. While the text focuses on basic knowledge and general principles, examples are taken from around the world.

This book describes the chemistry of natural environmental systems, their composition and the processes and reactions that operate within and between the various components. Without focusing specifically on pollution, we also discuss ways in which these systems respond to peturbations, either those that are natural or those that are caused by humans. Background material from subjects such as atmospheric science, limnology, and social science is provided in order to establish a setting for a description of relevant chemistry. Emphasis is on general principles that can be applied in a variety of circumstances. At the same time, these principles are illustrated with examples taken from around the world. Because issues of the environment related to every society, care has been taken to relate the subject material to situations in urban and rural areas in both highly industrialized and low-income countries. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally someone gets it right
I've been looking for this book. Other environmental chemistry textbooks cover too many topics: environmental analysis, ecotoxicology, and environmental engineering are common. This one gets it just right: the chemistry of the air, water and soil (including common pollutants) at the level of a undergraduate sophomore- or junior-level course. The text is challenging enough for chemistry majors but not too intimidating for the biology majors interested in the field.

My only quibbles: not much about environmental modeling of the chemical composition of important systems, still not quite advanced enough (but better than current general textbooks on the topic), and it's missing some important topics (groundwater attenuation, for example). Still, I'll be adopting this book for the course I teach. ... Read more

Book Description

The authors' goal is the presentation of the three major areas of physical chemistry: molecular structure, the equilibrium properties of systems, and the kinetics of transformations of systems. The theoretical foundations of these subjects are, respectively, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and equilibrium statistical mechanics, and chemical kinetics and kinetic theory. These theories, firmly based on experimental findings, constitute the structure required for the understanding of past accomplishments and the basis for recognition and development of significant new areas in physical chemistry.

The presentation of the theories of physical chemistry requires careful discussions at several levels of exposition. The authors' approach aims toward depth of understanding of fundamentals more than toward breadth of recognition of the multitude of activities that go on under the name of physical chemistry. The organization of the book, with its three principal sections, should make this clear. The mathematical level begins with elementary calculus, and rises to the use of simple properties of partial differential equations and the special functions that enter into their solutions. The authors' intention is to keep the reader's mind on the scienc rather than on the mathematics, especially at the beginning. This procedure also corresponds to the pattern, followed by many students, of taking physical chemistry and advanced calculus concurrently. Appendices develop the details of the mathematical tools as they are needed.

The text discussion contains more material than can be covered in the traditional one-year physical chemistry sequence; it is designed to fulfill the dual purpose of providing a clear and incisive treatment of fundamental principles at a level accessible to all students while broadening the perspectives and challenging the minds of the best students. Individual instructors will wish to make their own selections of material for inclusion and exclusion, respectively. ... Read more

Book Description

Timely, authoritative, pedagogically consistent— a valuable professional resource and a superior didactic tool. Authored by two internationally respected pioneers in the field, this book offers a fully integrated, pedagogically consistent presentation of the fundamental physics and chemistry of partially ionized, chemically reactive, low-pressure plasmas and their roles in a wide range of plasma discharges and processes used in thin film processing applications—especially in the fabrication of integrated circuits. With many fully worked examples, practice exercises, and clear demonstrations of the relationship of plasma parameters to external control parameters and processing results, this book combines the best qualities of a student text and a professional resource.

  • In-depth coverage of the fundamentals of plasma physics and chemistry—includes separate chapters on atomic and molecular collisions
  • Applies basic theory to plasma discharges, including calculations of plasma parameters and scaling of plasma parameters with control parameters
  • Applies results to basic processing mechanisms and the effects of plasma parameters on those mechanisms
  • Uses numerous worked examples to demonstrate the relationships between control parameters, plasma parameters, and processing results

1-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
As a praciticing process engineer my opinion is this book lacks insight. Typical text book written a professor in the academic community with no practical experience. This book spends far to much time deriving equations and not discussing the basics concepts. The author makes a half hearted attempt to relate the first 14 chapters to the real worl, in a short and inadequate Chapter 15. This is the first mail book order book i took the time to return. In all honesty this book is not worth the $90.00. Spend your money elsewhere

5-0 out of 5 stars The book provides an excellent overview of plasma processing
This book provides an excellent introduction and overview of plasma discharges applied to semiconductor manufacturing. It is well-organized, clearly-written and full of useful examples and exercises. And unlike many books on plasma physics, it is not overly-mathematical and contains many useful physical insights. I strongly recommend this book for anyone wanting to review the field of plasma processing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of common plasma processing devices
Lieberman covers many of the standard processing devices and much of the physics needed to model them effectively.

The presentation is clear and extremely useful both as a reference and as a tutorial. A must-have book for anyone interested in plasma processing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Theoretical Coverage of Plasma's, including ECR
This book provides a theoretical overview of plasma's, including coverage of ECR applications. This was very valuable for Hitachi Etchers. The theory is presented at an undergraduate level and assumes the reader has knowledge of vector analysis. Highly recommended for any Etch Process Engineer in the Semiconductor Industry. ... Book Description

This is the first book to classify and systematize the available data on the behavior of binary alloys under high pressure. Despite the fact that there is a strong correlation between temperature-composition (T-C) phase diagrams at normal pressure and three- dimensional temperature-composition-pressure (T-C-P) diagrams, many material scientists seldom refer to the (T-C-P) diagrams, just as many high pressure researchers often ignore the data obtained at normal pressure. This book aims to bridge the gap between data obtained at high pressure and that obtained at normal pressure.
The most recent research covers not only elements and stoichiometric compounds, but also binary, ternary, and multicomponent alloys, and so this book covers an extended range of substances. The properties of 890 binary systems and a further 1153 pseudobinary and ternary systems are summarized, and accompanied by an extensive bibliography. The data includes information on the solubility of components in solid solutions, mel

Book Description

Surface Chemistry is an essential and developing area of physical chemistry and one that has become increasingly multidisciplinary. Surface Science: Foundations of Catalysis and Nanoscience offers a comprehensive, modern introduction to the subject, taking a truly pedagogical approach. This text will provide the reader with a well-rounded understanding, not only of how chemistry works at surfaces, but also how to understand and probe the dynamics of surface reactions.
Starting with an examination of the importance of heterogeneous reactions, it lays the foundations for an understanding of chemical reactions at surfaces through a detailed treatment of surface electronic and geometric structure. Reactivity on and with surfaces is clearly explained. Fundamental principles such as adsorption, desorption and reactions between adsorbates are examined, with extensive coverage of developments in the growth of epitaxial, and Langmuir-Blodgett films, as well as treatment of the etching of surfaces.
Surface Science:Foundations of Catalysis and Nanoscience:
* Features a modern molecular view of surfaces combined with a careful pedagogic approach to chemical reaction dynamics
* Introduces both theoretical and experimental techniques including a detailed explanation of growth and etching.
* Includes numerous examples of the relevance of surface chemistry to industrial processes combined with end of chapter problems and an extensive bibliography.
Suitable for all students taking courses in surface chemistry in departments of chemistry, physics, chemical engineering and material science, as well as researchers and professionals needing an up to date review of the subject.

Book Description

Here is the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of one of the hottest areas of chemical research. The treatment of fundamental kinetics and photochemistry will be highly useful to chemistry students and their instructors at the graduate level, as well as postdoctoral fellows entering this new, exciting, and well-funded field with a Ph.D. in a related discipline (e.g., analytical, organic, or physical chemistry, chemical physics, etc.). Chemistry of the Upper and Lower Atmosphere provides postgraduate researchers and teachers with a uniquely detailed, comprehensive, and authoritative resource. The text bridges the "gap" between the fundamental chemistry of the earth's atmosphere and "real world" examples of its application to the development of sound scientific risk assessments and associated risk management control strategies for both tropospheric and stratospheric pollutants.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Horizons
The scope and technical detail of this seminal work covering the cutting edge in Atmospheric chemistry is beyond remarkable. Just the number of references is mind boggling. The book presents the material in a very readable and understandable style. The authors have kept the reader in mind. They also add surprising levity on occasion and show a keen grasp of areas outside chemistry. I know of no other work in this field that is more current, comprehensive, and helpful. If only other scientific works were as thorough and readable. ... Read more
